2-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but redundant.
I purchased this book to assist in staff training. I have found it to contain useful information. However, after the first chapter, it tends to repeat itself without introducing much new helpful information. There are lots of checklists for staff self-evaluations that, when scored, do not include information on improving their weak areas. Also, as this book was written for the UK, I have found the language to be interesting, but a slight drawback. There is quite a bit of UK slang (such as tatty, taken out of a skip, put a tick in the appropriate column, etc.). And there was an interesting, but not so useful for the US, chapter on British Telecom. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentally Practical!
I'm really digging into this book and appreciate the smooth writing, the references and the locations of websites and exercises in this book.

Most of the material is practical and valuable to the law student who wants to know what to expect in the real world.Since I'm IN the real world already, I can relate to a lot of examples relating to attorneys whose bad communication skills and dismal management styles make working in the legal field tough.

The book gives solutions to these problems in simple, easy to understand terms.

The CD that is with the book is not that useful, since the majority of the CD material is repeated in the back of each chapter.

Also, the number of spelling errors is enough to make me wonder about the editor and publisher, especially when a student is spending over a hundred bucks on this book!"Confidentiatilty" is a new word to me![Should be "Confidentiality"].

Outside of these errors, not a badly written book.Recommend for the fifth edition that the editor go over the text with a fine-blue pencil!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical.
This is a good book for any vocational or practical oriented program in paralegal or legal assistant studies. It contains lots of helpful hints, guidelines, and explanations of common areas for law office management.Very useful for learning the "how-to" of docket control, billing, file and records management, and general law office operations.

I have used this book in teaching paralegal students now at two institutions of higher education.I currently use it at the university level. The straight forward language, easy explanations, and practical guides to each item are very helpful for beginning through mid-level students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pullis the best method of speedwriting
I think the Pullis method of speedwriting is the best. This book is very well written and organized. It uses the minimal amount of letters, goes by sound, eliminates middle word vowels, has brief forms, has abbreviations, and you can teach yourself in no time at all. The system uses the alphabet and no funny squiggley symbols. For practice I watch TV and take notes and am shocked at how fast I can do it.I'm able to concentrate on what people are saying and not struggling to remember what they said.Great for taking phone messages too. There is also a speedwriting dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Self-Teaching Guide
Speedwriting Shorthand is a highly practical, easy-to-learn system of manual, alphabetic shorthand. In high school, I took traditional Gregg Shorthand (Diamond Jubilee Series) and I was never able to get above 70 wpm with it and made tons of errors. With Speedwriting, I was able to quickly teach myself the whole system and now write it effortlessly and very rapidly with virtually no errors.

By taking basic shorthand priniciples and incorporating them into a writing system based on English cursive handwriting, Pullis has streamlined the process considerably. There are only a small handfull of non-English strokes in this system, but they are easily incorporated and highly memorable.Notes taken in Speedwriting are easy to read too; my wife was able to read a basic sentence without knowing anything about Speedwriting because it's based on English letters you already know how to write.

If you want an edge over your classmates, get this book and learn Speedwriting. In just an hour or two a night, you'll learn and be able immediately to start using Speedwriting. From the very first lesson, there is good, very practical stuff you can use NOW (instead of six months from now like with Gregg shorthand).

I have all the Speedwriting Shorthand textbooks and this book is, by far, the best of the lot.Everything you need all under one cover.I would also recommend against buying the new copy, it's just far too expensive for what you get.Get a used copy instead and dig right in, you'll be very glad you did!

Product Description
Writing at Work is for people who do or will write while on the job whether the writing be an interoffice memo, e-mail, a status report, a lab report, marketing materials, or a letter to a customer. The philosophy behind Writing at Work is that such writing needn't be stale and unoriginal but can instead be a sophisticated piece of work that positively reflects the competence of its composer to all who read it.Rather than dwell on picky, little "rules" that you must adhere to when writing, Writing at Work focuses on the real rules of grammar and aspects of style that you really need to know in order to write with confidence.Using examples realistically drawn from work settings, Writing at Work presents each topic in a manner that is at once accessible and inviting. Spread throughout the text are exercises that provide you with ample opportunity to write, revise, and correct the kinds of written tasks typically encountered at work. You can immediately gauge your progress by checking your work against the answers listed at the end of each chapter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great refresher
this is a great purchase for those that need a refresher for writin in the work place. i loved it SO MUCH that I gave it as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing at Work works!
In the course of twenty-five chapters, Smith and Bernhardt write in a lively manner about the elementary rules (and "non-rules") of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure up through discussions on jargon, technical language, and then on to the "tones" of writing, parallel structure, and playful and elegant prose. I really enjoyed reading this book because I was able to review those elementary rules (without too much pain) as well as get some validation for stylistic choices I've made in my own writing. So much of how a person writes -- whether it's "good" writing or not -- is rather semi-conscious. "Writing at Work" makes the reader conscious about what they're doing in their writing as well as makes a strong case for putting elegant, persuasive writing back into technical and business communications.

And I only had to re-write the last paragraph a few times.... ... Read more
