Surprises in Jazz History
My grandfather was a ragtime/jazz musician in Oklahoma from 1916 to 1928 -- something I've always thought strange. This book makes sense of it, adding names, dates, and facts that would otherwise be lost to history. Chapters are far too short. But it's a quick read, if you consider that a good thing.

Understanding Oklahoma
As a native Oklahoman who has returned after a 35 year absence I found The Culture of Oklahoma to be very enlightening.The essays reinforced each other in an image of a state full of people who undervalue their strengthsand whose devotion to individualism and populism keep them underachievingrelative to much of the rest of the country.The same culture createspeople who are warm, helpful, friendly and perservering. An image whichstands out is the contrast of the "dust bowl" image with thereality of a state which is, by and large, lush, green and water rich.Onehopes that younger generations of Oklahoma will grow out of the backwardsparts of their past while retaining the positives. ... Forcibly removed from their homes in the late 1830s, Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Indians brought their African-descended slaves with them along the Trail of Tears and resettled in Indian Territory, present-day Oklahoma. Celia E. Naylor vividly charts the experiences of enslaved and free African Cherokees from the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma's entry into the Union in 1907. Carefully extracting the voices of former slaves from interviews and mining a range of sources in Oklahoma, she creates an engaging narrative of the composite lives of African Cherokees. Tributes to Oklahoma's Badmen
This book, by the late Ken Butler, discusses some otherwise unknown outlaws of the western part of Oklahoma.Several people may never have heard of Hookie Miller and Alf Hunter.But Mr. Butler has done a heck of a job bringing out these characters deeds and misdeeds.This is Butler's first and last publication in book form and he will be greatly missed.I would recommend anyone wishing to get a look at another group of bandits from the western days of old Oklahoma to buy this one.

Moving Collection
Although Kate captures a time and place in most of these poems, her themes are timeless. The poems are certainly accessible and moving, but they are also skillfully and artfully crafted. Beautiful, haunting imagery. A very worthwhile read.

Beautiful, Funny, Real
There was something lovely and vulnerable about this collection, but still, very funny. Kate McIntire displayed a range of emotions for all to see, yet did it in a delightful, thoughtful way. She talks about being a child--and then a young woman--in rural Oklahoma in the 1940's and 1950's, and I found the honesty in each poem touching but lighthearted.

I'm not a big poetry reader usually (is anyone?), but this collection made me think... and smile. ... Read more
