Often an introduction to or description of conseration efforts begins with the most well known relevant historic event, and indeed, that is the case here.The Dust Bowl afected much more of the U.S. than just the region under its roughly defined boundary.But though that cataclysmic period was a powerful motivator, it was not the only causal event to instigate programs and entities to help landusers grasp the importance of and learn techniques for reducing loss of soil from wind or water.There were already those aware of our dependence on the soil for survival.When the giant storms of the Dust Bowl pressed the issue to the point of emergency, those pioneers of conservation laid the foundation for the success that is their legacy today.Though evolving as needs change, the continuing conservation effort helps give us the quality of life we are privileged to enjoy.We reap those benefits even through periods of enduring drought, soaring temperatures, powerful and relentless winds that would challenge those of the Dust Bowl era, and torrential rains equal to those that devastated the parched earth in life-taking floods.
