Product Description
"For those convinced that Indian boarding schools were solely instruments of psychological and cultural oppression, Fortunate Eagle's account will be both surprising and unsettling. Pipestone is artfully told, frequently humorous, and deeply moving."--David Wallace Adams, author of Education for Extinction: American Indians and the Boarding School Experience, 1875-1928

Best known as a leader of the Indian takeover of Alcatraz Island in 1969, Adam Fortunate Eagle now offers an unforgettable memoir of his years as a young student at Pipestone Indian Boarding School in Minnesota. In this rare firsthand account, Fortunate Eagle lives up to his reputation as a "contrary warrior" by disproving the popular view of Indian boarding schools as bleak and prisonlike.

Fortunate Eagle attended Pipestone between 1935 and 1945, just as Commissioner of Indian Affairs John Collier's pluralist vision was reshaping the federal boarding school system to promote greater respect for Native cultures and traditions. But this book is hardly a dry history of the late boarding school era. Telling this story in the voice of his younger self, the author takes us on a delightful journey into his childhood and the inner world of the boarding school. Along the way, he shares anecdotes of dormitory culture, student pranks, and warrior games. Although Fortunate Eagle recognizes Pipestone's shortcomings, he describes his time there as nothing less than "a little bit of heaven."

Were all Indian boarding schools the dispiriting places that history has suggested? This book allows readers to decide for themselves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a rare, first hand account
Despite our historical knowledge of the impact of the boarding school period on native american culture and families, it is amazing to find a personal account that managed to find positives in what most other could only attribute negatives. Fortunate Eagle's boyhoood reminiscence allows for the child-like acceptance of one's living conditions. When compared to the wretching poverty of the reservation, the boarding school with 3 square meals a day, seemed like a salvation to some. Fortunate Eagle believes the regimentation it taught, served his brothers well in their future military careers. This is a unique view-point and should be included in any studies on the boarding school period, particularly since it is from one who lived it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Montana History
As a Montanan who likes the game of basketball, I found this to be an inspiring, well-written story and one I had never heard.I had no idea! The individuals involved were "fleshed out" so they took on personality and I began rooting for them to overcome and triumph in their game of life. It's also terrific Montana history.I am so impressed with the book that I ordered a copy for each of my children (and their families) and we will use it as the basis for our family book club.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Full Court Quest" hardcover book
Item was in superb condition.arrived a couple of days too late for birthday but other than that, i was very pleased with transaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tells how ten girls shattered prevailing perceptions towards Indian peoples and women athletes one game at a time
FULL-COURT QUEST: THE GIRLS FROM FORT SHAW INDIAN SCHOOL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD tells how ten girls shattered prevailing perceptions towards Indian peoples and women athletes one game at a time, but it's more than a recommendation for sports libraries alone. Included in the assessment of the Fort Shaw Indian School winners is an overview of native politics, life, and women's issues alike, making FULL-COURT QUEST a wide-ranging assessment for any college-level collection strong in women's issues or Native American rights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
I have also read "Shoot Minnie Shoot", it was OK but very disappointing that the author chose to take "artistic license" with the story. The facts are so much better then fiction.

I have been waiting for years for this book and I am not disappointed.

My grandmother played on this team. I learned things about her I never knew.

If all someone is looking for is a girls basketball story, you can find that anywhere.

This is HISTORY.
The history of a bunch of girls that changed they way people viewed Indians at the turn of the century.
The history of our families, our grandmothers, aunts, cousins finally told after over 100 years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well researched - but
I was disappointed as the book was very factual but became very repetitous. The program before the games & and the performances at the World Fair, were itemized each time. The reader got bogged down with these details.I felt the book should have been edited more.Having read "Shoot, Minnie, Shoot" and disappointed that it was a novel and introduced the author's imagination, I was very interested in the "facts", just not that many repeated so often. However, I did enjoy the newspaper articles that were included in "Shoot, Minnie, shoot" rather than the "notes" in Full Court Quest. The book definitely cleared up some misconceptions that I had about the team, including that they did not play any boy's teams or have a championship game as such at the World Fair.It was very interesting that the Government Indian School was presented in such a good light and prepared the young people with skills and confidence.I also enjoyed "The Years Thereafter", a nice follow-up on the members of the team.My expectations may have been a bit high for the book, based on a review in Montana I had read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonder Book for Children and Adults
This book is a great deal of fun for adults and children alike. It captures the World War II era from a child's point of view and offers a unique perspective toward growing up in small town America during that terrible time. It is heart warming and enormously funny! We read this book as a family and everyone from my youngest child, age 6, to my eldest son, age 16, up to my self looked forward to every minute. We have purchased the sequels as well and they hold up just as well as this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rachel Resistance by Molly Levite Griffis
This is a fabulous book! The 2nd book in a 3 book series by Oklahoma Award Winning Author, Molly Levite Griffis, it gives a very accurate account of life during the WWII era, despite the fact that its fictional. I recommend anyone, even adults, read this book when wanting to know more about WWII. No, it won't give you details of battles, or information about the players in the war; rather this book brings it down to a different perspective. This book is the perspective of civilians, of a child, living during the WWII era. How life was for her. Fictional or not, the sentiment comes across in a very entertaining way. And, although you can read each of the 3 books in this series seperately, I highly recommend reading them all and in order; The Feester Filibuster, The Rachel Resistance, and Simon Says. You won't be disappointed in Molly's story telling abilities!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A TIMELY CHILDREN'S BOOK FOR OUR TIMES
The Rachel Resistance is a terrific children's book for any time and an ideal book for the present time.It is December 5, 1941, and Pearl Harbor has just been bombed.Fifth-grader Rachel Elizabeth Dalton (her initials spell the color of her hair) of Apache, Oklahoma, sets out with her best friend Paul to discover traitors in her own home town.Is her tormenter John Alan Feester an enemy spy? What about Mr. Johnson who owns the local filling station and is the only person in Apache who does not fly an American flag? When someone throws a brick through the window of old Mr. Sing's Chinese laundry, Rachel learns that a passion for quick revenge is itself un-American.Finally, her friendship with Paul takes a twist that would perplex the most mature adult. A wonderful book with vivid prose and a plot that sticks with you long after the covers are closed. ... Read more

Product Description
Reservation boarding schools represented an important component in the U.S. government's campaign in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to "civilize" American Indians according to Anglo-American standards. The history of the Rainy Mountain School in southwestern Oklahoma reveals much about the form and function of the Indian policy and its consequences for the Kiowa children who attended the school. In To Change Them Forever, Clyde Ellis surveys changes in government policy and tells how the Kiowa people resisted and accommodated the efforts of school personnel to transform them. Ellis combines archival research with personal memoirs, conversations with former students, and the school's official records to portray a school often at odds with official policy and frequently neglected by the Indian Service's bureaucracy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to the study of Indian Education.
In the latter part of the nineteenth century, the United States Government initiated a plan to assimilate Indians into Anglo society by forcing Indian children to attend reservation boarding schools. These schools attempted to "civilize" Native Americans, teaching them the Anglo-American culture, and therefore preventing the Indians, as Clyde Ellis states, "from returning to the blanket."To Change Them Forever studies education on the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation in western Oklahoma at the close of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Ellis uses research, personal memoirs, official school records, and interviews to give the reader an insight into life at the Rainy Mountain Boarding School. He describes a myriad of problems encountered by the school's superintendents. The author examines curriculum, social life, and educational process while exposing years of governmental neglect.Ellis also evaluates the impact of United States Indian policy upon the Kiowa children attending the school. The author contrasts the Rainy Mountain School with schools at Ft. Sill, Riverside, and other sites scattered across the nation. He reveals their constant lack of funds; this financial neglect by the Bureau of Indian Affairs would create inadequate facilities, teacher shortages, and lead to serious illnesses for those in the boarding school. The school also had problems keeping its administration and faculty due to the extremely poor facilities.Even with all its problems, as Ellis points out, Rainy Mountain never lacked students.Although many reservation schools throughout this period hadattendance problems, the Rainy Mountain School did not. While other schools maintained their student bodies by forcibly removing children from their families, the Kiowas eagerly sent their children for an education. When the Rainy Mountain Boarding School closed in 1920, the Kiowa Indian Nation protested unsuccessfully.Ellis does a masterful job!in explaining that Rainy Mountain and the government boarding schools across the nation simultaneously succeeded and failed. They taught students English and trained them in various trades, but they failed in their efforts to transform the Indian students. In describing the impact of the school's attempt to change him, one man said, "They couldn't, I didn't let that happen.People all the time asking me who I am.Who am I?I am Kiowa."Well-documented and well-researched, this book is a welcome addition to the study of Indian Education.Ellis' interviews with former students of Rainy Mountain add depth and insight to this well-written book. This monograph fills a need for a detailed study of the reservation boarding schools utilized by the government to "civilize" the Indians. It will be of special interest to those studying Kiowa History, Indian Education, and the impact of the government assimilation programs of the early twentieth century. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars This book dosen't stop repeating itself
The Stricklands is a pretty good book. I would of given 4 stars, but it kept repeating things over and over again!!! I think the author forgot that somtimes Less Is More.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steinbeck would have approved
This is a reissue of a book first published in 1939. It was considered by many critics destined to become a classic and was mentioned as a candidate for the Pulitzer Prize. As fate would have it the book was overshadowed by another book with an amazingly similar theme-John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. As they say, the rest is history.
Steinbeck's book went on to be a best selling classic and this book lapsed into obscurity. This book is the story of Depression-era Oklahoma tenant farmers struggling to survive in a hostile environmental and economic climate.
The conflicting methods of the brothers Strickland to securing economic and social justice, one favoring criminal activity and the other a more legal course, makes for a powerful theme and wonderful book.
This book deserves the second chance provided by OU Press and belongs on the shelf of any reader interested in Oklahoma history and the dust bowl era. It is surely in league with Steinbeck's classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teen girls love this book
Anna Myers is a master at developing characters with strong voices and souls. Complex Ethan and the somewhat head-in-the-clouds Claire click in a way that makes you want them to be together forever.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ending Ruined It
This book had potential but fell short by a mile. The characters and writing were good, but the tear jerking ending and stitched together plot spoiled the book. There was absolutely no reason why it should have ended like it did. If the author had made up her mind about the Ethan-might-be-Schizophrenic storyline and changed the finale completely, this novel may have been salvageable, but Anna Myers was obviously in a hurry to finish writing this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
This book started out strong, and I'm not exactly sure what happened to it, but it limped along to the finish line.

I didn't like the main character Clare at all. She was selfish and acted all holier-than-thou. But her worst offense was putting a boy before her so-called bestfriend, which is a no-no as everybody should know.

I won't be reading any more books by Anna Myers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Friendship
Would you choose your best friend over your boyfriend or do the opposite?. Ethan Between Us is a great book for teenagers. I really recommend you to read it. If you see lying on a bookstore, dont have any second thoughts and but it because I know you will not regret it. This book is about 2 best friends(Clare and Liz) being there for each other even at tough times. But Ethan(a gorgious, easy to talk to, and mysterious guy) moved to thier neighborhood and Clare sets eyes on him. If you want to know what happened, read the book! ^_^

Product Description

Bloomfield Academy was founded in 1852 by the Chickasaw Nation in conjunction with missionaries. It remained open for nearly a century, offering Chickasaw girls one of the finest educations in the West. After being forcibly relocated to Indian Territory, the Chickasaws viewed education as instrumental to their survival in a rapidly changing world. Bloomfield became their way to prepare emerging generations of Chickasaw girls for new challenges and opportunities.

Amanda J. Cobb became interested in Bloomfield Academy because of her grandmother, Ida Mae Pratt Cobb, an alumna from the 1920s. Drawing on letters, reports, interviews with students, and school programs, Cobb recounts the academy’s success story. In stark contrast to the federally run off-reservation boarding schools in operation at the time, Bloomfield represents a rare instance of tribal control in education. For the Chickasaw Nation, Bloomfield—a tool of assimilation—became an important method of self-preservation.

Book has some history of the school .I was looking for genealogy info as i had 3 generations of women in my family attend Bloomfield. As the title suggests i was looking for my grandmothers story. Very few personal stories of Bloomfield & the students..more so a history of the Nation , not Bloomfield Academy's students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listening to Our Grandmothers' Stories
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and fully appreciate why it received this year's American Indian Prose Award.

Cobb has approached what is clearly, to her, a personally significant topic in a manner that is sensitive far beyond her personal views. The history of the United States' treatment of American Indians is complex and troubled.Cobb, relying on both archival research and personal interviews with women who attended the Bloomfield Academy when the school was under federal administration, has provided a fresh and compellingly complicating perspective on Indian boarding schools, a specific facet of this history. Most significantly in her work, she has highlighted, through these women's own voices, the contemporaneous perspective of natives directly impacted by the United States' varying policies. What emerges is a well-documented story of Native self-direction, self-identification, and, above all, survival and hope for the future. Her final chapter, especially, poignantly brings this point home.Rather than overtly ideologize her topic, Cobb has allowed the story primarily to tell itself.

This book is a genuine contribution to contemporary research of Native history. ... Read more

Almost before they know it, Melanie drops the girls at her sister's house in Oklahoma, assuring them she'll be back just as soon as she's settled in Tennessee. But when a few days turn into a few weeks and beyond, with no Melanie in sight, the girls begin to realize what has happened.

While Opal soon becomes one of the most popular girls in school, her younger sister struggles. For Garnet, getting used to her new life means trying to figure out how to have pride in herself when it seems she has little to offer the world and the odds are stacked against her. With only each other to lean on, Melanie's "precious gems" must learn to live with the hand they've been dealt and to accept the changing face of their family.

Set in the early 1960s and beautifully told by D. Anne Love, Semiprecious is a powerful, poignant, and often funny coming-of-age novel that will stay with readers long after the turn of the final page. ... Read more

If you've ever had a bad day, you would have an idea of what Garnet was going through. In this book, Garnet has bad days for a whole year. With few simple mercies, Garnet manages to survive.Garnet learns that, when the going gets tough, the tough can get going.
Garnet is a twelve-year-old girl who has lived in Texas all her life.Until one muggy August day in the early 1960's, her mother decides to pick up and move to Nashville.Garnet and her older sister, Opal, are dropped off at their aunt's house in Willow Flats, Oklahoma. Meanwhile their mother settles into Nashville, promising to come back before the beginning of the school year.I'll let you read the book to figure out what happens.
I enjoyed this book very much.Like most books, Semiprecious has parts that readers like and parts that readers don't like. What this reader liked about this book is that Garnet persevered through being lonely, and being unpopular. If you have ever been new somewhere, you would know that it is not always pleasant to be new.Yet even though Garnet was new, and had a tendency to run off, she kept going. What I did not like about this book is that it was monotonous. Basically, it is the same thing every day with a few twists and turns.Garnet ran into troubles, she had a bad day, repeat day.But these monotonous things also made it more interesting when the exciting things happened.
Semiprecious is a good example of what some girls are going through in their lives.Garnet is a good girl with a relatively, bad life. But Garnet learned that she could get through it by willing herself to hold on just long enough for her dad to bring her and Opal home.I would tell anybody, to read Semiprecious. It is a great book and I think all tween-age girls would enjoy it.
Over all, Semiprecious is a good book and I enjoyed it.There were some parts that I didn't like but there were plenty that I did like.Garnet has learned an important lesson that this reviewer thinks everybody should learn: That when the going gets tough, the tough can get going.

I picked up "Semiprecious" at my local library without reading the back cover.
I thought it would be terrible, but to my surpise, Semiprecious is one of my favorite books.
All the recent books I've read, have been the same old same old.
But with the 1960 as the setting, it brings a completly new setting, and loveable characters that you can't help thinking about even after you closed the book at the last page.
And don't let the recomended ages fool you--- Semiprecious is a great read for anyone. ... Read more
