Product Description
The events which began in June, 1940 and in time led to the internment of several hundred Italian-Canadians have become in recent years a more rlevant part of history for all Canadians. Internment, because of its harsh intrusion on individual and family life, matters not simply to the interned but to citizens of the country carrying on the internment. One man who was interned, Montreal writer Mario Duliani, wrote an account of tose many, long months in the internment camp but because he did not write in English, his work was unread by the majority of Canadians for whom English is the only tongue. Now, thanks to Antonino Mazza, Duliani's book, The City Without Women, with its sad, telling description of internment life, can be read by the many thousands of people who ought to have read it, but did not or could not. Mr. Mazza brings to his task not only an understanding of language, but of the creative gift which is necessary to translation. His work is informed by compassion and commitment and we should be grateful that he has undertaken it. At last, The City Without Women has the audience it has so long been denied. ... Read more

Product Description

Rayside conducted informal interviews with more than 150 Glengarrians and attended numerous meetings of local councils, school boards, planning boards, and conservation authorities. This field research provides the basis for a detailed examination of the self-image of the town as a friendly, caring, united community, and of the unequal power relations that exist between different social classes, language groups, and men and women.Working-class life is disadvantaged in Alexandria much as it is in large cities, French-English relations are strained, and the experience of women has not been affected to any great extent by the challenges of feminism.Local government in Alexandria may be more accessible to the ordinary citizen than it is elsewhere but, as Rayside shows, the local council rarely engages in issues of genuine concern to residents, who themselves largely ignore municipal politics. Most local politicians seem inclined to avoid controversy and innovation, hoping to retain an environment favourable to business investment.Rayside examines the impact of the external world on a small community. He situates this impact and the resulting changes in historical context and reveals economic and social relationships that differ from what many of Alexandria's inhabitants believe to be the case.A Small Town in Modern Times will be of interest not only to students and scholars of political science, sociology, history, and Canadian studies but also to residents of Alexandria and any other small community in transition.

Product Description

A Law Unto Itself provides a detailed examination of the development and application of land use planning policy by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), a key Canadian administrative tribunal.Unlike the many existing analyses that focus on judicial reviews of the administrative process, this text explores the administrative process itself and demonstrates how a tribunal creates and implements policy through its decision-making.

Using a wide variety of case studies, John Chipman analyzes almost 900 of the OMB's planning-related decisions during two specific time periods (1971-1978 and 1987-2000), illuminating the way in which the OMB frequently overturns municipal land-use planning decisions and imposes its own policies, which are generally protective of private interests, and the way in which it applies provincial planning policies within the context of its own standards.Chipman concludes that the nature of the policies developed by the OMB as well as the changing climate within which it operates together provide evidence that the board has outlived its role as a planning appeal tribunal.

Product Description

In August 1914, Berlin, Ontario, settled largely by people of German origin, was a thriving, peaceful city. By the spring of 1915 it was a city torn apart by the tensions of war. By September 1916, Berlin had become Kitchener. It began with the need to raise a battalion of 1,100 men to support the British war effort.

Meeting with resistance from a peace-loving community and spurred on by the jingoistic nationalism that demanded troops to fight the hated “Hun,” frustrated soldiers began assaulting citizens in the streets and, on one infamous occasion, a Lutheran clergyman in his parsonage. Out of this turmoil arose a movement to rid the city of its German name, and this campaign, together with the recruiting efforts, made 1916 the most turbulent year in Kitchener’s history.

This is the story of the men and women involved in these battles, the soldiers, the civic officials, the business leaders, and the innocent bystanders, and how they behaved in the face of conditions they had never before experienced.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quebec City
I never received this book, nor did I receive a response when I emailed you to tell you so. Please either resend or credit my account.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly descriptive guide
Lots of great walking tours, and a lot of different options for restaurants, lodging, and stuff to do.The maps were quite helpful when I went to Quebec City for the first time.In many ways, this book is better than similar guides as it is written by local authors and published by a Canadian company, so there is inside knowledge of the area.Absolutely wonderful restaurants that do not appear in other publications are listed here. But this is not a perfect guide. The language section consists primarily of standard French phrases rather than ones more likely to be heard in Quebec, and it is a bit smaller than what most travellers would find useful. This is a concern because the Quebec dialect of French is comprehensible to French speakers, but it can be significantly different from that spoken in France or taught in schools. An addition of local phrases would be of great use.Why the language section is so light is uncertain.

Overall, though, I recommend this and other publications from this publisher for the traveller going to Canada. If I get to Montreal or other areas in French speaking Canada, I will be sure to get the equivalent versions of this publication for my trip.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Basics, but not much more
This guide book included interesting walking tours and descriptions of historic buildings and monuments of Quebec. However, it was not good at giving directions to locate restaurants.Although it did have a mini glossary of French terms, this did not include regional dishes found in restaurants, which was a problem for me in the few restaurants where no English menu was available. Also, the introductory text about the history and society of Quebec was not well-written.Too bad Let's Go! doesn't make a Quebec City guide! ... Product Description
A single gunshot on Saturday night, October 6, 1894, shattered Toronto's prevailing sense of peace and security. That gunshot took the life of Frank Westwood, a respectable young man from one of the city's most prominent families. This unprecedented attack produced a feeling of hysteria throughout Toronto and baffled the municipal police forces. The mystery was even referred to Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. However, even the Great Detective could not solve the Westwood murder. Finally, a chance rumour led to the most unlikely of suspects - a young Black woman named Clara Ford. She was a most unusual character, a tough, revolver-toting lady who often wore men's clothing and defied the norms of late Victorian Toronto. While the police increasingly focused their investigation on her, the motives for the killing remained a puzzle. Was Clara seeking revenge for a previous assault, or was she the frustrated lover of a young white man? The trial of Clara Ford captured Toronto's attention like no other case before it. The evidence revealed a bizarre story of romance and racism. In addition to the wildly unconventional Clara, the cast of characters featured dogged detectives, and wily lawyers who at times seemed to make this cause celebre more of a theatrical than a judicial display. ... Product Description

If a city is its people, and its people are what they eat, then shouldn’t food play a larger role in our dialogue about how and where we live? The food of a metropolis is essential to its character. Native plants, proximity to farmland, the locations of supermarkets, immigration, food-security concerns, how chefs are trained: how a city nourishes itself might say more than anything else about what kind of city it is.

With a cornucopia of essays on comestibles, The Edible City considers how one city eats. It includes dishes on peaches and poverty, on processing plants and public gardens, on rats and bees and bad restaurant service, on schnitzel and school lunches. There are incisive studies of food-safety policy, of feeding the poor, and of waste, and a happy tale about a hardy fig tree.

Together they form a saucy picture of how Toronto – and, by extension, every city – sustains itself, from growing basil on balconies to four-star restaurants. Dig into The Edible City and get the whole story, from field to fork.

Product Description

With a landmass of approximately 7000 square kilometres and a population of roughly five million, the Greater Toronto Area is Canada's largest metropolitan centre. How did a small nineteenth-century colonial capital become this sprawling urban giant, and how did government policies shape the contours of its landscape?

In Toronto Sprawls, Lawrence Solomon examines the great migration from farms to the city that occurred in the last half of the nineteenth century. During this period, a disproportionate number of single women came to Toronto while, at the same time, immigration from abroad was swelling the city's urban boundaries. Labour unions were increasingly successful in recruiting urban workers in these years. Governments responded to these perceived threats with a series of policies designed to foster order. To promote single family dwellings conducive to the traditional family, buildings in high-density areas were razed and apartment buildings banned. To discourage returning First World War veterans from settling in cities, the government offered grants to spur rural settlement. These policies and others dispersed the city's population and promoted sprawl.

An illuminating read, Toronto Sprawls makes a convincing case that urban sprawl in Toronto was caused not by market forces, but rather by policies and programs designed to disperse Toronto's urban population.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent little book
This little book (under 100 pages if you ignore the end notes) explains how government at all levels favored sprawl in Toronto.A few major points:

*Toronto land use regulation has always limited intown growth; as early as 1921, the city reserved some streets for detached houses, and today height limits perform the same function even in renter-oriented areas.

*In 1935, the federal Dominion Home Act (DHA) was enacted. This law heavily subsidized mortgages; Solomon notes that 80 percent of DHA loans were to suburban buyers.(He fails to explain, however, why this was so- I suspect because DHA loans were only open for new homes and cities were "built out").

*Provincial and regional governments subsidized suburban sewers and highways. And because many of these facilities were often financed with metro-area taxes at a time when suburbs were poorer than today, city of Toronto taxpayers paid for them.

Description:
Many cities in North America are attempting to implement connected greenway networks. Some are building on sparse existing open space resources. Other metropolitan areas, like Milwaukee, Wisconsin (US) and Ottawa, Ontario (Canada), have an impressive historic open space framework on which to build. However, neither city is well known for progressive, contemporary greenway planning efforts. This research asks two main questions. First, how have early city planning efforts affected the pattern of connected greenway systems currently in place in these cities? To address this question, the history of open space planning and the physical change in greenway development is assessed over time. Second, what institutional structures are currently used to implement connected greenways, and how do they relate to the historic fabric? Organizational structures, inter-governmental cooperation, leadership and advocacy, and greenway objectives are compared in order to assess the degree to which a regional vision is being pursued. This project is based on comparative case study research. Qualitative techniques are used to develop in-depth cases. Findings show that Milwaukee and Ottawa have remarkable historic corridors to build from, especially in parkways planned along urban rivers in the early 20th century. This analysis shows, however, that contemporary collaboration around regional greenways planning is piecemeal, that greenway objectives have changed over time in important ways, and that coordinated greenway visions are lacking. Finally, both Milwaukee and Ottawa seem poised for integrated greenways programs, accelerated by innovative experimental projects, increasing environmental awareness, and growing institutional capacity. This research has relevance to the growing literature in greenway planning and implementation. ... Read more

Product Description

Doucet and Weaver begin this empirical, analytical, and narrative study with an analysis of the evolution of land development as an enterprise and continue with an examination of house design and construction practices, the development of the apartment building, and an account of class and age as they relate to housing tenure. They also relate developments in Hamilton to the current state of urban historiography, using their case study to resolve discrepancies and contradictions in the literature.Among the major themes the authors deal with is a controversial exploration of what they see as a central North American urge: the desire to own a home.Other themes include the social allocation of urban space, the quality and affordability of housing, the increased interest of large corporations in the land development and financial service industries, and a comparative analysis of housing in Canada and the United States. The authors have drawn on civic and business records dating from the early nineteenth century to the latest planning data.Combining this information with their comprehensive analysis, Doucet and Weaver show that current housing problems and potential solutions are better understood when seen as part of a historical process. They provide a critical assessment of the ways in which contemporary society produces shelter and question the use of technical innovations alone to resolve housing crises.

Product Description

Unbuilt Toronto explores never-realized building projects in and around Toronto, from the city’s founding to the twenty-first century. Delving into unfulfilled and largely forgotten visions for grand public buildings, landmark skyscrapers, highways, subways, and arts and recreation venues, it outlines such ambitious schemes as St. Alban's Cathedral, the Queen subway line and early city plans that would have resulted in a paris-by-the-Lake.

Readers may lament the loss of some projects (such as the Eaton’s College Street tower), be thankful for the disappearance of others (a highway through the Annex) and marvel at the downtown that could have been (with underground roads and walkways in the sky).

Featuring 147 photographs and illustrations, many never before published, Unbuilt Toronto casts a different light on a city you thought you knew.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trustworthy and well-creased
I am sad to see there are some quite unfriendly reviews of this book. I used it every day when I first came to this city and still consult it with pleasure and in confidence. I have found it always useful and while I have learned much more about what is in Toronto I have not needed to buy a different one.

I've purchased dozens of travel guides for many different cities/countries over the years and this is the worst one I've ever seen.I bought it based on the reviews, but am very disappointed.I'm going to ditch it and try a more familiar publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second only to your passport for the Toronto visitor !
This book on Toronto, the city of my birth, is one of the most practical and interesting books on the city. Each chapter is cleary set out and includes not just real practical help, but interesting trivia too. There are many street maps which accompany text : they are very precise, yet not over detailed, so the reader never gets bogged down in unnecessary mire.
The chapter on City life and entertainment is my favourite: starting with an annual calendar of events to suit really every taste, it then proceeds to break down all types of entertainment into different categories, again with well laid out plans on how to get there.

Metro Toronto is now a huge, sprawling multi-cultural city, yet the author has managed superbly to break down the city into manageable , readable sections entitled: Neighbourhood Profiles. which for every 34 neighbourhood section on each double page, has the map of the neighbourhood on the left side and on the right, complementary and again, interesting, practical information for the visitor.

John Must has done a really thorough job on this and coupled with the really affordable priced, pardon the pun , but this book is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
I just got back from a 4 day trip to Toronto with this book as my guide, and I must say it's one great book.

The format of this book is different from other guidebooks like Lonely Planet and Fodor's, but it's also the best part about it.The author breaks the city into 35 or so sections, and devotes two pages to each section. On the left hand page is a map of that particular section. These are great maps; they contain street numbers, locations of major sites, locations of restaurants, and locations of little things like convenience stores. On the facing page is a (unually historical) description about that section of town.Need to find out where you are?No need to break out a large, clumsy, fold out map of the city.Just figure out what part of town you're in, turn to that page in the book, and there you go.

The rest of of book contains usual guidebook info like listings of major restaurants, sites, how to get to/from the airport, more maps (the one of the subway is very useful) and stuff like that.NOTE:one thing the book lacks is hotel information.Nothing about budget accomodations, B&B's, fancy hotels. . .nothing.So don't rely on this book to get you a place to stay for the night, but you can rely on it for everything else.
