Product Description

High unemployment rates, humiliating relief policy, and the spectre of eviction characterized the experiences of many Ontario families in the Great Depression. Respectable Citizens is an examination of the material difficulties and survival strategies of families facing poverty and unemployment, and an analysis of how collective action and protest redefined the meanings of welfare and citizenship in the 1930s.

Lara Campbell draws on diverse sources including newspapers, family and juvenile court records, premiers' papers, memoirs, and oral histories to uncover the ways in which the material workings of the family and the discursive category of 'respectable' citizenship were invested with gendered obligations and Anglo-British identity. Respectable Citizens demonstrates how women and men represented themselves as entitled to make specific claims on the state, shedding new light on the cooperative and conflicting relationships between men and women, parents and children, and citizen and state in 1930s Canada.

Product Description

Using an extensive array of primary sources, including local WCTU minute books and correspondence, Cook describes the origins, structures, strategies, and achievements of the Ontario WCTU in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She discusses the importance of its positions on such issues as Social Purity, women's franchise, the appropriate role of single women, working women's rights, the treatment of female offenders, and the effect of the WCTU's youth work.Cook traces the empowerment of women in the WCTU to the union's evangelical roots, arguing that the views of the Ontario WCTU were grounded in a vision of society that based the development of a moral society on the family unit and its moral centre, the mother.

Product Description

Selles documents nearly a century of Methodist education from the early seminary movement in Upper Canada, through the establishment of ladies' colleges, to the admission of women into the university. She reconstructs what life was like for women at these institutions and highlights changing ideologies, curricula, and views on women's education as well as introducing some of the unique personalities who shaped Methodist higher education.Selles concludes that by attempting to create an ideal Christian woman through education, Methodist education structures consciously created and imposed a class-based gender ideology.

Product Description

The best of Ontario's ghost towns by the writer whose ghost-town books have sold over 150,000 copies.

"Ron Brown... must know more about Ontario's towns, past and present, than anyone else."
- Community Voices

Ontario's Ghost Town Heritage features the most interesting or "ghostly" destinations from Ron Brown's earlier volumes, all with updated information and images, along with newly "discovered" ghost towns. In all, it includes 80 accessible locations throughout Ontario.

As international travel becomes more difficult, there is a renewed interest in exploring our own backyard. Ontario historian Ron Brown visits vestiges of once-thriving towns and villages. Some still maintain small resident populations, while others exist only as abandoned buildings and foundation ruins. All have in common that they are "ghosts" of their former greatness and that their images evoke their lost legacies.

Sketch maps by the author guide the reader within each geographic region.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes there's still a couple of buildings left;at other times, not much but the memory.
If you are interested in pioneer history and particularly Ghost Towns in Ontario,Ron Brown is the person to turn to for reams of information. As a town planner he has access to all the maps and such for towns in Ontario. This included all the towns, even those small ones, that flourished for a few years and withered away and are really lost to the dustbin of history. Surprisingly, there is stll much to be found in the way of maps and records even if the towns themselves are almost totally gone, overgrown ,or well off the beaten path. During the later part of the 19th Century wonderfully prepared County Atlases were prepared and contain excellent maps, layouts of towns and streets and even illustrations of many buildings and structures.Usually ,libraries have copies of these Atlases, and reprints are available.
Anyone interested in Ghost Towns will find Brown's books invaluable ,particularly if they desire to partake in the popular pastime of searching for these long since deserted towns.Brown,s books give a brief history of the towns, what was the reason they grew up and why in the end they were abandoned. His several books have sold over 150,000 copies. They include directions on how to find them and wonderful pictures of what they were like in their hayday, and some idea of what can still be found.By and large, these towns were formed because of mining operations that became played out, lumbering operations that used up all the surrounding resourses, depots along waterways that got replaced by highways, towns along railways that could no longer survive, and there being no other reason to be or other industry;the town went away with the railway.Did you ever notice that in the US,they call them Railroads while in Canada we call them Railways?
Don't expect to find any ghosts if you visit these long lost towns, but do expect to find lots of great old roads to follow and places to see;and very little in the way of people and congestion. However;you may come across some interesting oldtimers and local people who are only too willing to spend some time and tell you a few stories about "the good old days".
There are over 80 ghost towns described in this book.
I have a friend who has made a hobby of locating ghost towns and has visited and photographed hundreds of them here in Ontario.I visited several of the ones in this book with my friend, and can assure you,if you like history, enjoy looking for and discovering things ,"ghost towning" can be a lot of fun. It is s pastime that is really suited only for warm weather times here in Ontario;and there are a few things to remember.
Maps are essential.
Insect repellant is a must.
A camera can be useful.
Wear proper outdoor clothing.
Water and food are a must, as these are not "tourist traps" and you
won't find any restaurants.
You'll often be off the beaten track and it would be wise to travel
with a friend ,for obvious reasons
And last but not least, make sure you are gassed up,Service Stations
are usually not too near. ... Read more

100. Shaped By The West Wind: Nature And History In Georgian Bay (Nature, History, Society)

Editorial Review

Product Description
Along the east shore of Ontario’s Georgian Bay lie the Thirty Thousand Islands, a granite archipelago scarred by glaciers, where the white pines cling to the ancient rock, twisted and bent by the west wind -- a symbol of a region where human history has been shaped by the natural environment. Over the last four centuries, the Bay has been visited by some of the most famous figures in Canadian history, from Samuel de Champlain to the Group of Seven. This book traces the history of Canadians’ reactions to and interactions with this distinctive and often intractable landscape.

Claire Campbell draws from recent work in cultural history, landscape studies in geography and art history, and environmental history to explore what happens when external agendas confront local realities -- a story central to the Canadian experience. Explorers, fishermen, artists, and park planners all were forced to respond to the unique contours of this inland sea; their encounters defined a regional identity even as they constructed a popular image for the Bay in the national imagination.

Beginning with a revealing analysis of the cartographic history of the Bay, Campbell proceeds to examine changing cultural representations of landscape over time, shifts between resource development and recreational use, recurring motifs of water and rock in landscape design and representation, changing memories of place, and the environmental politics of place read through debates about resource management and parks.

Campbell investigates the relationship between landscape, culture, and regional identity, and presents a case study in modern environmental thought. Each chapter presents a different type of encounter -- different ways in which people approached and interacted with the Bay. She incorporates a wide variety of sources, including art and literature, maps and survey journals, cottage architecture and boat design, government and park archives, tourism brochures, and oral interviews.

This is not a narrowly conceived local history but a focused argument about how places take on shifting cultural meanings over time. The author argues that the environment of Georgian Bay is not simply an imagined geography but has been created through an active engagement between cultural readings and physical circumstances. Shaped by the West Wind speaks to a wide variety of disciplines including geography, art and design, literary criticism, environmental studies, and public history. It will appeal to anyone interested in the environmental dimensions of Canadian history. ... Read more
