5-0 out of 5 stars best question book...hands down!
Of all the question books out there, these are the most similar to OKAPS and the most high yield. I find the Mass eye and ear questions too detailed andother such books don't even come close to this classic. Use it for boards and okaps. Pictures and explanations are second to none. As an aside, I hear there may be a new edition in the works. May want to wait for that but I'm not certain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Q&A book to prepare for boards/OKAPS
The questions in this book look very much like the questions in the BCSC series and the OKAPs, which are supposed to look like the boards.Do well on these questions and you should do well on your standardized exams in Ophthalmology.I was dissapointed that many fundus photos were presented in back and white, and not in color as the Chern review manual shows them, but if you can recognize the diseases by clinical presentation and a B&W photo, then you are sure to nail the diagnosis in clinic.I think that this is the most relevant Q&A book available, and it is also one of the most recently updated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with typos and errors
The content of this book is an excellent sample of the material on the boards and the OKAPS.HOWEVER, look out for SEVERAL DOZEN critical typos and poorly constructed questions.Just some examples:Question 100 in the retina quiz: the answer is clearly B but the book has a typo as D.Question 38 in the neuro-op quiz: either answer B or C would be correct, since Eaton-Lambert syndrome is a presynaptic disorder that affects the axon terminal (and not only the synapse).Answer to question 68 in the neuro-op quiz: irrigating the "left ear" suddently becomes irrigating the "left eye".The list goes on and on.One is left with the distinct impression that the authors slapped this book together in a hurry.I hope they pay more attention in a future edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Review Book for OKAPS
If you study the Ophthalmology Review Manual and work the questions in this book, you will do well on OKAPS.The questions in this book are superb. They really hit the highlights on very important topics.I would supplementthe optics, and would supplement the pathology sections (as would be expected).

I recently bough the Mass Eye and Ear Review Manual and it is good too.It has more questions, but the questions are not as good overall. There is a lot more minutia in the Mass Eye and Ear question book. The Chern book you will get the most bang for your buck, hands down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review Book
Overall a nice supplement for the boards - it seems to have enough variety and not come straight from the Chern review book.Pictures are decent - not all in color yet.Gives nice explanatations to answers. ... Read more

Product Description

The Little Eye Book: A Pupil’s Guide to Understanding Ophthalmology is an
easy-to-understand introduction to the field of eye care that has been updated into a new
Second Edition. This book is written with the non-physician in mind, so you won’t be bogged down with heavy details, yet every basic fact that you need is right here. With photographs as well as drawings and helpful tables and charts, this conversational-style text packs a big punch.

Beginning with an illustrated description of ocular anatomy, the book sweeps you into the workings of vision with hardly a blink, where you’ll learn what happens when light meets the eye. But life is never perfect, and sometimes the eye isn’t either. You’ll get a good overview of disorders and trauma, from lids to optic nerves. The all-important red eye has a section all its own, including symptoms, signs, what’s an emergency and what’s not. A chapter on eye symptoms and their potential causes will help you understand patients’ complaints.

New to the Second Edition:
- A chapter on refractive errors and their correction, including a section on glasses and contact lenses
- New technology topics including optical coherence tomography, scanning laser tomography, wavefront analysis and more
- Updated information on medications and refractive surgery
- Includes over 65 figures and 10 tables

Now you will finally understand how the eye works without spending hours trying to get through an overwhelming medical book. Need to know how to take a history, check vision or pupils, or give someone eye medications? It’s in here! Wonder what special testing is available? We tell you! Have questions about surgery or medical treatment? Yep, we covered that, too, and more!

Written by Janice K. Ledford, an eyecare professional with over 26 years of experience, The Little Eye Book: A Pupil’s Guide to Understanding Ophthalmology, Second Edition is perfect for anyone who works in the eye care industry or with patients, but isn’t an ophthalmologist.

Product Description

"Due to the generous representation of the afferent visual system within the brain, neurological disease may disrupt vision as a presenting symptom or as a secondary effect of the disease. Conversely, early developmental disturbances of vision often disrupt ocular motor control systems, giving rise to complex disorders such as nystagmus, strabismus, and torticollis. The signs and symptoms of neurological disease are elusive by their very nature, presenting a confounding diagnostic challenge. Neurological medications and neurosurgical treatments can produce neuro-ophthalmological dysfunction that can be difficult to distinguish from disease progression. Affected patients may experience substantial delays in diagnosis, and are often subjected to extensive (and expensive) diagnostic testing. Scientific articles pertaining to specific disorders are scattered throughout medical subspecialty journals. These children continue to "fall through the cracks" of our medical education system. The increasing recognition that pediatric neuro-ophthalmology comprises a distinct set of diseases from those seen in adults has led to its emergence as a dedicated field of study.

"Since the original publication of Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology nearly fourteen years ago, interest in the field has burgeoned. Pediatric ophthalmology and pediatric neurology subspecialty conferences often include symposia dedicated to recent advances in pediatric neuro-ophthalmology. Technical advances in neuroimaging have given rise to a more integrated mechanistic classification of neuro-ophthalmological disease in children. Our understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders of the visual system has expanded, longstanding monoliths have been dissembled into component parts, basic molecular mechanisms have taken center stage, and genetic underpinnings have become definitional. Evolutionary alterations can now be observed at the level of the gene, adding a new dimension to our understanding of disease pathogenesis. New classifications now encompass clinically disparate conditions. Descriptive definitions have been supplanted by mechanistic ones, and clinical definitions superseded by genetic ones. Our concept of disease pathogenesis has been revised and in some cases overturned. Bearing witness to these remarkable advancements has compelled me to enhance and expand the first edition of Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology into this new and revised one.

"In the first edition of this book, our goal was to present the clinical characteristics, diagnostic evaluation, and therapeutic options for the common neuro-ophthalmologic disorders of childhood. In so doing, we designed the book to be provide a narrative journey through the thought processes involved in the clinical management of these disorders. In this edition, I have retained the basic narrative format of original book, while expanding the exploration of these complex visual disorders in the context of the many new scientific advancements and discoveries that have come to light. These conditions are fun to diagnose, fascinating to understand, and gratifying to manage." --from the Preface to the 2nd Edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but not the best....
I can appreciate what the author's were trying to do here: an atlas in a high yield question book style format. While I applaud the effort, I think the book falls short. The pictures are great but the explanations for these pictures are not adequate to learn a whole lot from. Not as high yield as I would hope, with some odd ball pics that even after you review the answer leaves you scratching your head. The format is also a bit difficult to review in a quick manner as there are too many pics on one page with the explanations all the way at the end of the section. Would like to see a version where the answers are on the very next page so you don't have to constantly flip back and forth.

Overall, not worth the price. I was using it for OKAP and boards and found it pretty useless. The pics are nice though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!
This book is so far above any of the other ophtho texts, it is totally worth the extra money. It is totally worth it for anyone with a keen interest in ophtho. That being said, if you are a GP who sees the occasional eye case, it probably has a lot more info than you need. I just kept my eye on it and bought it for $150 off the list price which made it very reasonable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The quintessential resource for veterinary ophthalmology
A worthy successor to the previous edition with contributions from many leaders in their respective fields and several new sections. Should be on the bookshelf of anyone serious about veterinary ophthalmology.

5-0 out of 5 stars the definitive text but long (1500p) and heavy (4.5kg)!
Gelatt has produced the definitive text which is without doubt a magnum opus. It is, however, very long and somewhat repetitive since the same topic is covered in several chapters rather than having one place to whichall other chapters refer. This is good if you are revising from it, sinceit forces you to read slightly different accounts of the same material butnot good if you want a quick reference which tells you all you need toknow. Different chapters don't always agree and the index doesn't alwayslead you to each entry for a subject (take ligneous conjunctivitis forexample which isn't in the index at all). There are some outright mistakes(keratin where it really means keratan in the cornea chapter for instance)which is a shame in a text that will be the definitive text for years tocome. Neverthless every veterinary ophthalmologist will need to buy it -but veterinary surgeons in practice might find it a bit to much to bereally useful unless they wanted to really research a topic in greatdetail. Having said all that this is the place to go if you want to knowwhat's right up to date in veterinary ophthalmology, for basic science, canine ophthalmology in depth, feline, equine, exotic and lab animal, evenpoultry ophthalmology. If it is known at present it's in there! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars get chern's instead
Adequate but too detailed. Chern is more condensed and higher yield. If you have money to spare, get both. If you can only afford one question book (or have time to only review one book), then get the Chern.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is good, but not the best.
I bought this book as a question book for studying for the OKAPS during my second year of residency.I had already used the Chern review book and Chern question book the year before. This book has far more questions than the Chern book. This book also covers some topics that are not covered well or at all in the Chern book such as pathology, fundamentals, general medicine, and refractive surgery. The problem I have with this book is that the questions themselves are not high yield. There are a LOT of questions on minutia. While the Chern question book had fewer questions, I found that the content covered in Chern was more relevant to what showed up on the OKAPS. But if you have extra time, use this book too. And I suspect that much of the "minutia" in this book wont seem like minutia anymore when studying for the real boards.Anyway, I would recommend this book for some additional questions to work after the Chern question book.

As a side note, its true there are some errors in the book, but there aren't that many

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs editing!
I bought this review book in order to prepare for my written boards in 2004.I found that there were numerous mistakes in the answer sections making this a very hard review manual to get through.I would not recommend this book if you are preparing for boards.I would get Chern's review manual and question and answer book for board review studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars great ophthalmology review
This is a book of review questions including a discussion for each answer. This book is extremely useful for ophthalmology residents as well as recent grads preparing for the boards. it covers all topics in an easy to use format. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars very misleading
The purchase of this textbook was very misleading. The description of the item stated it came with an interactive DVD.No such DVD existed.I returned it once to reorder, but the same book came with no DVD.In addition, I was billed for the more expensive version (i.e. with DVD) not the less expensive version for the book without DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reader covering the diagnosis and clinical management of eye diseases of domestic animals
A more specialized, but equally important, reference for such collections is the second updated edition of Kirk N. Gelatt's ESSENTIALS OF VETERINARY OPHTHALMOLOGY, a reader covering the diagnosis and clinical management of eye diseases of domestic animals. It draws on clinical experience to provide a quick reference format, making it a fine pick for busy vets seeking a rapid consultation and diagnosis device. More images, a more convenient layout, and a reference to dosage, side effects and more make this reference more practical than ever.
