5-0 out of 5 stars Sue's Review
This book is in excellent shape. The delivery was fast and I am sure I will use it for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transcriptionist's ovation
It seems that Stedman's word books, generally, get a nearly unanimous standing ovation from transcriptionists, and a good head-scratching reply from those who are looking for more detailed information in addition to terminology, phrases, and spelling.

Well, that's appropriate. This ophthalmology word book, and all of the other similar word books Stedman's publishes, are specifically targeted to the niche market of MTs, medical authors, etc., who need specific information on the hundreds of thousands of terms used within the field. This particular book is valuable because it is so specialized, as terms of ophthalmology are rarely used in other areas. While many medical terms may apply to a number of specialties, that's just not the case here.

If not for this book, I would be completely lost, for example, in an ER trauma report that deals with an eye injury, and certainly would be lost when having to transcribe a blepharoplasty or even a routine cataract removal.Stedman's is a gold mine for anyone hoping to advance in the field of medical transcription.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Reference for Ophthalmology
The second edition of "Stedman's Ophthalmology Words" [January 2000] is a real gem for the medical transcriptionist needing a current reference in this specialty. It has 60,000 entries, cross-indexed, with>42,00 medical word entries relevant to ophthalmology, including thepertinent peripheral nerves, muscles, disorders and diseases.

Additionally, it has four helpful appendixes: 1) anatomicalillustrations, 2) common terms by procedure, 3) drugs by indication [i.e.,for entities such as "conjunctivitis" or "glaucoma",there is listed the Rx for these common problems] and, I believe mosthelpful, 4) thirteen common operative reports with many of the arcane termsused by eye surgeons.

Surgical instruments are listed freely in thistome:the word "forceps", for example, has four pages of variousforceps found in ophthalmology.

This is a gold mine for the individualwho needs a reference in this specialty. As a transcriptionist whooccasionally transcribes ophthalmological reports, I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Reference Book
"Ophthalmology Words" by Stedman once again lives up to the Stedman tradition of excellence. With over 60,000 entries, it completely covers the gamut of ophthalmologic words, surgical and otherwise.Inaddition to being completely cross-referenced, it includes four helpfulappendixes that include 1) several anatomic reference guides, 2) commonlyused eye drug/medications, 3) a preparation/procedure reference, and, mosthelpful in my estimation, 4) 13 ophthalmologic reports--the latter areextremely helpful for he/she who writes up surgical reports.

This secondedition, written in the year 2000, is as current as you can get.

As atranscriptionist who occasionally does ophthalmologic transcription, I findthis reference tops. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, I'd look elsewhere
I didn't find this book to be very helpful as there are not enough pictures and the layout of the subjects seems disjointed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading before your Clerkship
I was given this textbook by the attending before the rotation and told to read it before showing up the first day. I'm glad I did, because it was the perfect introduction to clinical ophthalmology. It can be read in an evening. Not suitable as a reference, but fulfills it's objectives admirably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breeze to Read
This book is a breeze to read and help you get the whole jist in order to make a generalized diagnosis when one sees a patient. It also includes the Examination techniques. But, you will still require a textbook in order to write the answers to difficult theory questions.I STRONGLY recommend this book as the BEST PRIMER to your approach to Opthalmology as it is quick reading, helps you become familiar and understand the meanings of all the words used in opthalmology(and good glossary, too), has a very systematic/organized approach, and the information just sinks in.After breezing through this book(3 days), you can run through your Opthalmology textbooks much, much faster.

3-0 out of 5 stars An average atlas
This atlas is reasonably good. The text is average with short but adequate descriptions of diseases including clinical findings, workup, and treatment. The descriptions though are brief summaries and I dont think are intended to be comprehensive. The pictures are plentiful and of reasonable quality but could be a little bigger in places. My biggest complaint is that some topics are completely left out, such as some of the white dot syndromes like MEWDS and MFC. If you can get this atlas cheap, then it is probably worth it just to have an additional source of pictures to refer to. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ophthalmology Secrets
This is a good book designed for studying for board or oral exams, covering a wide range of ophthalmic disorders. Its sole weaknesses are: (1) Paucity of information in a few questions that can lead the reader astray when narrowing down the possible diagnoses, (2) An odd selection of questions on topics such as optics and color vision, with partially correct or simplistic answers. The book would be better if the author had restricted its scope to disease, which is its area of strength.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help!
If you learn well by being asked questions, this is the book for you!As a student, it has given me great insight as to what is important to the clinician's mind (rather than a laundry list to memorize for exams).I enjoyed the practicality of it, as well as the simplicity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the oral boards
This book is a real gem for any trainee in ophthalmology.I read it initially as a medical student, and then again for the oral boards.Without a doubt, this is the most concise book for the orals, and many of the questions that I was asked were well reviewed by the authors of this book.It made my orals a snap!

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid, unique reference book.
