5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
As I began reading the book, I thought that it seemed a bit simple.I identified with so much of it, but I truly didn't think that the techniques and subtle changes would make much of a difference.Although it isn't 100% solved, I have a much better understanding of what my child is going through and I can definitely see the difference in his attitude."less defiant" is a good description and I'm a much better person for reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars 180 degree turn in our relationship
Dramatically reshaped the way I THINK about and thus ACT towards my child. This in turn has caused a dramatic change in how she acts towards me.We have so much more affection and happy times - and therefore she is more compliant and cooperative. What a refreshing change.Does need more specifics to help after the 'honeymoon' period is over. For that, I would recommend what I read next 'Kazdin's Method for Defiant Children'.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed the way I parent
This book has changed the way I parent and consequently, it has changed my life.My husband, parents, and in-laws all notice that the way I interact with my daughter has significantly changed and we are seeing positive results. This book has concrete strategies and it constantly reviews the previous information so that you really internalize the information. In addition to being a mom, I am a social worker and work with families.I plan to recommend it to any family who is struggling with defiance or power struggles.I highly recommend this book!!

2-0 out of 5 stars don't see this working
I don't get it. Where is the concrete advice? Seems like he is saying to give them lots of love and try to understand them..OK.. so, What do I do when my 14 year old disrupts our family every night by being obnoxious at the dinner table and I ask her to stop 5 times...she does not learn from her mistakes and does not listen to anything we ask.. I am then told to not use consequences.. OK. What do I do? We are all enjoying a nice dinner and she is being loud and annoying. We are supposed to ask her what is going on with her and validate her? Being ADD is not an excuse for bad behavior. She lost her computer for the night..maybe that will get through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best book on this subject
Altho' I am skeptical of titles that claim to work miracles in 10 days, I have to recommend this book.I borrowed a slew of books from the library on this topic and this one is the most direct,[so much so that I purchased my own copy). And his recommendations do work and quickly. However, one has to be prepared to change a lot about oneself. The ideas do work quickly but for the longterm they require a constant effort. Its worth it though, because the alternative is very expensive and not guaranteed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
Ahh....teenagers. Some good reading material in this book. Good advice. Some things work better than others, but I think it all depends on your own teen and own circumstances. However, I don't think you can go wrong with having as much information and ideas as you can get.

5-0 out of 5 stars lessen the stress
Teenagers can be so tough to deal with. This great book gives some background aboutwhat is happening developmentally as well as a step by step program to restoring some of the positive in your relationship with your teenager.Written for parents, but as a teacher, I also found this book to be a lifesaver.I love my teenagers now that I understand them better. We still have our rough spots, but I don't get as freaked out about handling them as before.Read this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars From Defiance to Cooperation:Real Solutions for Transforming the Angry, Defiant and Discouraged Child
The parents of my clients, loved the explanations why their child is so defiant. In addition, the solutions offered for addressing their defiant child, were practical and very realistic. I am going to use this book in my parenting group as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Taylor gets it!This is the book you need!
As a mental health professional and former classroom teacher, as well as a parent, I do recommend this book.Taylor is an expert in this field.Although this book acknowledges parental frustration, it does not express a lot of sympathy for the struggles of parents, but is very matter of fact - quickly capturing the big picture-systemic approach to the problem.Parents may feel blamed - especially those who are sensitive to feeling shamed and thus are more comfortable seeing their children as the sole problem. But this book shows that it is not parents vs. children - no one side is to blame. This book WILL help take blame OUT of the family dynamic, helping parents and kids to work as a team against the mutual problems in their relationship. Therefore, some parents would be better off using the book as an addition to counseling.
Children are so much more than their brain chemistry. In fact, research now shows that in the nature vs. nurture debate, we now Know that nurture is the most powerful influence on the child's behavior and outcomes. This book will guide parents to the sort of nurture that will bring desired changes. If you are a parent who is courageous and loving enough to examine and change your own behavior - you can be the instrument of healing and hope for your child - and this book will help you do that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Useful. Misleading Title.
Misleading title. I had to put this book down 1st time I picked it up. You see he told me I was the problem then proceeded to only offer solutions to fix my family. No case studies, no references to previous solutions, no suggestions from immediate help. Nope, ODD children are created by the parents. Hogwash.

I'm sick and tired of "professionals" telling me that my child isn't the one who is bringing in the problem to my family. That it's me and my misguided attempts to thwart his behavior constitute abuse.

Here's how I see it. My child needs help. We need help. We need real tools to quickly deal with his problems so we can get to the other side and start to deal with the complex issuesa ODD child creates in the family. The way I see it is if you're here looking for help, your not abusive - you need support. What kind of support is it to be told from the start you're the problem. Your desperate and in need of immediate solutions. Not told to take your wife on a picnic, go to the movies or on vacation. You need suggested actions based on real life scenarios.

Don't buy this book unless you need to be told you're the problem. Which your not. It's not your fault - especially if your here looking for solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpfull
I found that this book gave me alot of very good advice. I would recomend this book to anyone who has a child that doesn't respond well to disapline, or instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important wake up call for parents
I work with children that have every problem you can imagine and my own issues with one of my own children. It is always the parents that desire to have an outsider "fix" the child, feeling that it is the child who is at fault. Parents that cannot take a good close look in the mirror and embrace the messages that this book exposes and details will miss an opportunity to turn their family around, and really help themselves while helping their child. It is not about blaming but about honesty, and how to correct beliefs and patterns that may have been handed down from old generations that don't work so well in our current life-style. I found the book to be a worthwhile one among other resources to become informed and WORK on all of us. ... Read more

Product Description
This authoritative manual presents an 18-step program designed both to teach parents the skills they need to manage difficult adolescent behavior and to improve family relationships overall. The first nine steps of the program modify the approach presented in Russell A. Barkley's DEFIANT CHILDREN, SECOND EDITION, to focus on developmental concerns of adolescence. The authors delineate clear procedures for assessing defiance in teens and working with parents, alone or in groups, to reverse problem behavior. Steps 10 through 18 are conducted with parents and teenagers together, utilizing a proven family therapy model developed by Arthur L. Robin and Sharon Foster. Clinicians are shown how to help all family members learn to negotiate, communicate, and problem-solve more effectively, while facilitating adolescents' individuation and autonomy.Featuring a lay-flat binding for ease of photocopying, the book includes reproducible forms that enable clinicians to gauge the nature, diversity, and severity of parent/n-/adolescent conflicts; assess for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD); and evaluate parental psychological adjustment. Reproducible handouts for families reinforce crucial ideas and skills imparted in-session.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This manual will serve me well in my counseling practice as I strive to put together a most meaningful and evidential parenting program for my teens and their families.

Barkley has been a great source for me for better understanding ADHD as well as ODD. The parenting program is essential. The assessment tools provided here are very helpful and the programming steps are right on. I use this and Parent Management Training as the backbone for my Defiant Children workshops.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is a great resource for the practitioner in training. It's easy to use and helps you learn in-take process and differential diagnosis tools.

4-0 out of 5 stars Defiant Teens:A Clinician's Manual for Assessment and Family
Defiant Teens: A Clinician's Manual for Assessment and Family Intervention is a very practical book for clinician's who work with teens with behavior disorders. It combines the best elements of behavioral therapy withoutignoring the crucial role the family plays in treatment.

The book beginsby presenting a comprehensive model for teen behavior, which includesdiscussion of mental disorders, parenting, and developmental factors.Thenit describes instructions for 18 structured sessions that are used to treatthe family and adolescent. It includes handouts, which may be reproducedif you buy the book.

I have used this book in practice as a substanceabuse counselor in a correctional facility and found it to be very useful. It is a valuable resource for anyone working with difficult to treat teensand their families.

The best part of this book is that it is writtenlike a workbook.Unlike many books on the matter, it includes step-by-stepinstructions that are grounded in theory without putting you to sleep.Thehandouts and session descriptions can be adapted and added to a clinician'stoolbox.I would recommend this book to anyone who treats adolescents. ...
