Product Description
Every child has "ornery" moments, but more than 1 in 20 American children exhibit behavioral problems that are out of control. For readers struggling with an unyielding or combative child, YOUR DEFIANT CHILD: EIGHT STEPS TO BETTER BEHAVIOR offers the understanding and guidance they need. Drawing on Dr. Russell A. Barkley's many years of work with parents and children, the book clearly explains what causes defiance, when it becomes a problem, and how it can be resolved. The book's comprehensive eight-step program stresses consistency and cooperation, promoting changes through a system of praise, rewards, and mild punishment. Readers learn tools and strategies for establishing clear patterns of discipline, communicating with children on a level they can understand, and reducing family stress overall. Filled with helpful charts, questionnaires, and checklists, YOUR DEFIANT CHILD helps parents get their child's behavior back on track and restore harmony in the home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
Desperately needed help with my borderline ADHD, ODD 3 yr old boy.As I studied, absorbed and instituted the author's recommendations, I gradually observed positive changes in him.Our household of 5 has gone from a battle zone to relatively harmonious and fun.I did not think it was possible.

2-0 out of 5 stars We're ALL defiant, it seems!
This book earned itself a free flight across the room and into the opposite wall, when I encountered the following definitions, ten pages in:

"Therefore, to answer the question, 'Is there really anything wrong, or is it just me,' you need some reliable objective measures. My colleagues and I consider a child oppositional and defiant when the child demonstrates a pattern of three types of behavior:

"1. The child fails to start doing what you ask within one minute after you make the request (or one minute following the point at which you say the child has to do what you ask, such as after the cartoon he is watching is over)."

Good heavens. Who knew? It seems that I also have a defiant *husband*, as well as a defiant child!! And to be fair, I find out that *I* am also regularly defiant! Don't ask how many times my husband has to ask me to do my taxes, in an average year. Well, on we go...

"2. The child fails to finish what you've asked her to do. Some children may get up and start making their beds as requested right away, but then they run off to do something more appealing in the middle of the chore."

Well, THAT'S certainly not normal. I mean, if it were, we'd have a whole nation of people checking their Facebook pages or thinking about their vacations or talking about last night's episode of Lost, or even SHOPPING ON AMAZON, when they SHOULD be WORKING!!

"3. The child violates rules of conduct already taught. Does your son know that swearing is unacceptable in your house, but he does it anyway? Does your daughter understand the rule, 'no snacks without permission,' but constantly take food from the refrigerator without asking?"

Oh, for pity's sake. Kid drops the f-bomb or raids the fridge and he's diagnosable? What are we raising here, humans or Imperial Storm Trooper Clones? Would you take parenting advice from someone who never did these things? Would you want to BE parented by someone whose demands for compliance were that rigid?

There are some families out there with REAL problems. Kids who do real harm to others and themselves. Kids whose anxieties are so paralyzing that they can't even leave the house. Why are we pathologizing kids who do things that we ALL did, and all STILL do, even as adults?

Okay. Deep breath. Retrieve book from place behind the sofa where it landed. The dust jacket features a recommendation by Ed Hallowell, who's someone I respect. Russell and Christine, Ed's just obtained you your second chance. Don't be wasting my valuable time, now. Give me some worthwhile perspective -- within one minute of me requesting it, please.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for parents of normal and abnormal defiant behavior
This is a very helpful book for parents who are discerning DOB vs normal defiance, and want to direct their kids to better behavior and ward off the possibility of DOB in later years. Teaches caregivers how to respond to defiant behavior in simple, easy to implement steps.

3-0 out of 5 stars review
I like the ideas and plans the book has if you are dealing with a defiant child. They suggest implementing one step each week and then proceeding from that point. The method makes sense to me, making it a part of your life is another tough one, however...

Product Description

The disruptive and oppositional behavior of children with conduct disorders makes this population among the most difficult to treat. Yet even though well over half the children in therapy carry this diagnosis, there has been no empirically based, comprehensive approach to psychodynamic treatment. This new book admirably fills that gap.Written by an outstanding team of clinician-researchers working within an ego psychology and object relations framework, it presents three tested methods of treatment and shows how they can be used alone or in combination. The goal of each is to help the child manage aggression and express feelings in a way that is both communicative and safe. Individual play therapy seeks to strengthen the child’s ego; in parent-training therapy the therapist serves as a model of good parenting behavior; and in play group therapy peer interaction helps enhance the child’s sense of mastery and self-control.Rich transcripts from actual sessions and step-by-step exposition of play techniques and verbal interventions make this humane and practical book the ideal guide for both beginning and seasoned therapists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written and informative
The Whipped Parent is a well written book which avoids jargon for the layperson. I bought this book for my friend who is having problems with his out of control teen. He was so grateful to receive it and it gave him hope that there was something that he could do and at least read about people who are going through the same thing that he is. I read the first few chapters myself and was impressed with the real life examples that were given and believe that is probably one of the best self-help books on this subject and highly recommend it to parents who feel helpless against their out of control teen. My own counselor was interested in recommending this book to his patients as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for parents of teens!
My teenager daughter has been refusing to go to school, posting revealing self-portraits on the internet, and defying me on just about every issue. Like the parents described in this book, I am frustrated, guilty, and burned out (whipped). Some days, I just don't even want to come home from work.

This book really helped me to see my daughter and myself in a different light. I understand more about her now, and how my behavior has kind of fed her behavior. I also feel equipped to deal with the stuff she throws my way. I'll be on my TOES from now on!

If you're looking for a book that will teach you how to control your child, this isn't it. In fact, this book is more about you than it is about your kid. And after reading it, I realize that I don't WANT to "control" her either. I can see her aggravating traits as potential strengths, too.

As I read this book, however, I was struck by the similarities in some of the stories to my 10-year-old step-son. He's having even more behavioral problems than my daughter (he's more like Top Dog, she's more like Slug). Before reading this book, I thought boot camp might be the answer. However, now I'm recommending that my fiance read this book, too!

If you're considering boot camp -- STOP! Read this book first!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
The Whipped Parent is a powerful resource simply written and easy for any parent to understand. It's a guide to help parents regain their sanity through learning to change their own thought processes, behaviors and responses. It is key for parents to understand the difference between control and influence and how that difference impacts their relationship with their child. The Whipped Parent clearly shares an abundance of tools and ideas on how toendure raising an Out-of-Control Teen. This is indeed a must read survival book!Deni

5-0 out of 5 stars A Parent Who's Been Whipped
Kim and Marney have written a book that has been too long in coming for parents with out-of-control children. When my child was a teen (back in the early 90s) there was no help for me, no where to turn, no book to read.I felt like a failure as a parent, thinking it must be my fault that my child was out of control.Kim and Marney's book made me realize that I WAS (and am)a good mother. Anyone with a child who is bordering on oppositional defiance or conduct disorder should definitely read this book.It will be like a livesaver in an ugly storm. ... Read more

Defiance in the Family follows the treatment of childhood and adolescent defiance through therapy, from intake to termination. 5-0 out of 5 stars There's Hope
The authors of Defiance in the Family succeed not just in writing a superb book, but in creating a great therapy session for the reader. The writing has a tremendously intimate feel, like we are sitting in the living room with the authors and these families. We come away with greater respect for,and understanding of, their--and our--deeply human struggles. The authors act as experienced, wise tour guides to the land of family life, and allow us to see it for perhaps the first time in all its pain and beauty.

The authors themselves are "defiant" in the way they offer a refreshing view of the complex web of interpersonal relationships that we call "family".This stands in contrast to what they suggest as the prevailing tendency to compartmentalize, pathologize and medicate symptomatic teens, who are mostly a symbolic expression of family love in search of itself. The authors eloquently discuss the social/medical culture's love affair with the "quick fix", and offer us insteadsomethingmore resonant and powerful. They offer us hope by conveying their deep respect for the complexities and ambiguities of family relationships. The authors are not engaged in a struggle to wrestle these ambiguities to the ground, but throughout the book, encourage the reader to embrace these ambiguities as a road that takes us closer to healing truths about families, and ourselves.

I think the broad appeal of this book lies in the combination of experience and humanity of the authors.Accomplished therapists will especially appreciate the chapters relating to the "self" of the therapist, including strategies for maintaining therapist equilibrium in the face of an acute family crisis.

Beginning and mid-level therapists will benefit from the authors "walking through" a therapy session, deliniating the components of the different therapy stages, and offering transcripts and vignettes which illustrate some of the "how to's" in conducting a family therapy session.

And finally, this book will serve as a beacon for families privileged to be living with a "defiant" child. Believing that "parents blame themselves enough", the authors instead offer a rich story about the many ways in which family members unintentionally wound each other, and give parents new insight into the meaning of their child's bewildering behavior. This makes it possible for parents to respond to the behavior in a new way--they will now have the pleasure of confusing their child!

I continue to enjoy this book as I would a good CD. I pick it up, open to any page, and savor the sounds coming from its pages. And, like a good piece of music, when it's over I am lighter, freer, more human.

Thank you for that, Drs. Keith and Connells. ... Read more

Description:
A modified skills training component of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was implemented in a group therapy format for non-suicidal outpatient young adolescents who met criteria for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Thirty-two youths completed the 16-week program, as well as pre- and post-treatment measures. The treatment was effective not only in decreasing negative behaviors, but also in increasing positive behaviors, per caregiver report. The youths reported a significant reduction in externalizing and internalizing symptoms and in depression. Reliable change indices indicated that far more participants were in the improved category than in the deteriorated category on the measures of interest. Despite the absence of control groups but consistent with the treatment outcome research literature for DBT-based treatments for other disorders, this study demonstrated that DBT skills training is feasible and shows promise in improving the behavior of ODD young adolescents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource
I found the information in this book very helpful.I have two very small children and it helped me distinguish what is normal for their ages and what is inappropriate behaviour.I prefer using non-physical methods of discipline and I am happy to see a book that is focused on this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some good information, but doesn't hit the target.
Dr Windell's book is really more about general parenting than dealing with oppositional children. He barely discussses Oppositional Defiant Disorder(ODD), and then in a clinical framework. The big problem is the author wants to blame the parents for a child's oppositional behavior."No child is born oppositional" he states, "They are made that way". Unless you have lived with ODD, you just don't understand. And, Dr Windell's children are no doubt GFG(Gifts from God), and he doesn't understand that parenting contributes, but most certainly isn't the whole problem.Ask any parent who has as ODD child and a non ODD child, parented the same. There is something there besides bad parenting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Winning Cooperation from Your Child!: A Comprehensive Method to Stop Defiant and Aggressive Behavior in Children
An absolute MUST READ for any parent of an ODD child. There needs to be a warning:THIS IS NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH OR FOR PARENTS NOT WILLING TO CHANGE because the author does spend time 'talking to' the parents about how THEY may first have to change in order for the child to change. Some people may take offense to this, thinking they are being 'blamed' for their child's behaviors. However, the message isn't one of finger-pointing.Instead, what the author is saying is that as the 'adult,' we may need to change our behavior and/or approach to this child in order for the child to change.Typcially, parents and ODD kids find themselves in a perpetual cycle ... the child misbehaves (albeit out of his control,) and the parent responds with traditional punishments and consequences; the child's frustration level increases (as s/he was not in control of the behavior to begin with) and then continues to misbehave, which results in additional punishments and consequences, leaving the child with a sense of doom and total failing, thus losing an 'incentive' to behave, and the parents feel like failures as they can't control their child. At some point, the cycle needs to be broken ... a change is needed. As the adult (the person in control, in charge) we are more in a position to change ... to break the cycle. It is not saying that the parents are at fault or are to blame. It is saying that as the ADULT person in the relationship, we need to take a different tactic or approach with the child. If we do, our child can/will change. To not be willing to do that, the parent is expecting the child to do all the changing (but not teaching them how to do that.)The book needs to be read to be totally understood, and read with an open mind. What I can and will say that I read this initially when my child (now 15) was 7 or 8 ... and it changed my life. The book became my bible, and I've recommended it to others over the years.I've read it and re-read it, and implemented the techniques.I went from having a child with such severe rage that the doctors were talking hospitalization ... to having a teenager who gets good grades, is a nice kid, is an avid baseball player and a black belt in karate ... who will become a loyal and productive member of society. For anyone to disregard this book for fear of being told that part of their child's behavior MAY be contributed to their own behaviors or their reactions to their child's is a shame, because anyone who can read this book with an open mind has a far greater chance of success ... for their child ... and it is their child that is the subject of the book and should be the focus of their attention.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Winning Cooperation..." has not won me at all
To be honest, the only reason I have given this book one star is that I could not give it zero stars.I have read many, many parenting books and am totally unimpressed by this one.First of all, the book places 100% of blame on the parents of these children for their defiant behavior. While this may be the case in some situations, it ignores situations where parents are fostering or adopting children that have been damaged by previous caregivers, and it does not acknowledge in any way that brain dysfunction may be present and responsible for the behavior of many oppositional and defiant children today.Secondly, the strategies presented in this book are not applicable or appropriate for children that are not attached:only a child that is appropriately attached to an adult figure would think and problem solve in the manner described by this author.Strategies presented in this book rely heavily on praise and positive social enforcement; a child that is unattached and lacks conscience is unlikely to respond to such attempts to "win" them.In fact, these oppositional and defiant children are not motivated by praise at all!I am an educated professional individual, parenting a very difficult child, and I found this book to be insulting and a complete waste of my time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST for all parents.
I have read SO many parenting books and this one rates up in the top 3, along with Parenting with Love and Logic and Raising Your Spirited Child. This book isn't just for parents of defiant/aggressive kids but for all parents. It is comprehensive, but simple to read without alot of redundancy to wade through. The author doesn't have any elaborate, complicated plans for you to follow, just practical, realistic but excellent parenting advice. If you are ready to follow his guidelines, you are ready to have a closer and healthier relationship with your child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Especially if You've Got Someone in Your Life Who Makes You Crazy
The Angry Smile is a terrific resource when you have a person (or people) in your life that push your buttons and gray your hair. Written in a textbook format with chapter overviews, case study examples, and end of chapter summaries, this teaching guide does not read overtly techie like a textbook. I discovered some very practical helps when dealing with a couple of people who make me feel crazy. I also learned some identifying signs and some warning flags that I had crossed or was ready to cross into the crazy making dance I didn't want to dance.

If you are in management or deal with people on a regular basis this manual could be helpful to you. It's not just for teachers or mental health care workers. Very valuable information, especially if you are plagued with confusion over why one particular person pushes every button you've got and some you didn't know you had.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Angry Smile- A Must Read
The Angry Smile: The Psychology of Passive-Aggressive Behavior in Families, Schools and Workplaces (2nd edition) is a must read for people hungry to better understand human behavior. Long, Long and Whitson use data, realistic examples, and a new, expanded intervention section to create a book that leaves the reader enlightened and empowered. Readers will knowingly nod in agreement as the authors explain the indirect behaviors that frustrate relationships with families, students and colleagues. In addition, readers will learn a step by step process to (1) examine the presenting behavior and then (2) DEAL with the behavior. There are many books that attempt to address aggression, anxiety or depression, but this is the only text that examines the understudied dynamic of passive aggressive behavior. Each chapter is written clearly with a caring, strength-based perspective. It is a required textbook for teachers in our graduate program and is a required read for our university supervisors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Angry Smile as a College Course
At about the time I was asked to develop and teach a Special Topics in
Psychology at my University ( Univ. of Maryland Baltimore County), Iwas
introduced to "The Angry Smile" by a former student. WOW!This is a major
area of abnormal behavior that abounds in our society, yet we seldom
mention it, much less teach our students how to deal with it in others,or
overcome it personally. This will be my special topics course.

When I proposed this to my department chair she immediately gave it her
enthusiastic approval. My textbook will be "The Angry Smile".This book
has academic integrity, covers a wealth ofinformation on understanding,
identifying and changing passive-aggressive behavior, and is written in an
articulate, student-friendly style.

I feel like I have discovered a gold mine! I am happy to share this
treasure with students.I highly recommend "The Angry Smile" for personal
enlightenment and to give to others, academically or otherwise.

The Psychology of Passive-Aggressive Behavior in Families, Schools, and Workplaces
From the moment I saw the title of this book, I shuddered.I have seen that smile.I grew up with that hideous smile. The title also offered hope of learning to cope with and understand the smile and the behavior that goes with it.The first chapter of this book offers 2 diagnostic questions.

The Angry Smile will help you to:
1. Understand the development of Passive-Aggressive behavior
2. Understand why people use Passive-Aggressive behavior
3. Indentify 5 levels of Passive-Aggressive conflict cycle

This book discusses Passive-Aggressive behavior in children, school, family, and the workplace.

Many people must deal with this behavior on a daily basis. It is frustrating. The Angry Smile offers hope and wisdom in dealing with this behavior problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides good advice clearly and concisely
The Angry Smile is one of the best books I have read on anger since reading The Dance of Anger.A well put together book brings about ideas of why their is passive-aggressiveness, the common errors people make when dealing with passive-aggressiveness, and how to best handle the passive-aggressiveness of others.I like that examples are given in a variety of situations, in schools, within close family relations, and in working situations.

Passive-aggressiveness is a difficult behavior to deal with. This type of behavior often throws even the most seasoned person off kilter. We can do two things in response to this type of behavior, we can change our response, and we can try to change the behavior. While we can't always change the behavior of the passive-aggressive person, there is the hope that we can always change our response.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organized Explanation of Behavior
The information in this book is easily found because of the organization. Dr. Sutton also carefully defines what he is discussing in understandable language for parents and teachers. I used this book as a source for writing an assignment for my discipline and classroom management course.

1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible disappointment
As the parent of an "oppositional" son, I'd looked forward to reading this after seeing synopses on Dr. Sutton's website.Unfortunately, the "straight talk" was almost no help at all. At one point, the author claims ODD sufferers may have the lowest recovery rate of all childhood psychiatric disorders. If the therapists who treat them have no clearer understanding than the author, I would not be surprised.

I believe a major problem with the book is that it did not go through the editing process of a major publishing house. It was published in Pleasanton, TX, where the author happens to reside--and the book's layout is designed to stretch the manuscript to fill space...

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful indeed
This is not another ho-hum book on behavior modification.Infact, Dr. Sutton believes (as does Dr. Ross Greene) that behavior modification can sometimes make this kid WORSE.Check out the "No-lutions" in the fifth chapter; they are eye-openers.Having tutored high school math for anumber of years, I am in complete agreement with his perspective of"Good Kid" Disorder.Indeed, the number of good and decent kidswho are simply shutting down seems to be climbing. This book not onlyoffers insight into the problem, but shares tangible interventions thataddress the issues that really matter the most--relationships.

For theperson considering buying this book, be aware that the largest chapteraddresses school issues. This is a big plus.Having been a classroomteacher, Dr. Sutton is one of the few psychologists who really understandsthe scope and impact of oppositional and defiant behavior at school.Thestrategies he outlines for school compliance are among the standoutfeatures of this book. These strategies and interventions are even moreexpanded in Dr.Sutton's follow-up book, "101 Ways to Make YourClassroom Special".I believe the two books compliment one anothernicely.

3-0 out of 5 stars Got snookered
I have read articles by the author (e.g., Noncompliance:The "Good Kid" Disorder) which describes some of the challenges we have faced with our child. The title gives the impression that this book is similarin nature to those articles. It is not. The articles describe great kidsthat are struggling with behavior, finishing tasks, listening andremembering tasks.

What this book refers to is not that the kid is such anice kid, but that he is never in criminal trouble, and this is why it iscall the "Good Kid" disorder. This book describes kids thatintentionally and overtly refuse to comply at home and at school.Theauthor even mentions in the book that no parent of an ODD child would referto their kid as a good kid.

Bottom line is if I had known what the bookis really about, I would not have bought it.I have a real "GoodKid" that is struggling, and thought this book would help us. Unfortunately it does not.

5-0 out of 5 stars As a psychotherapist, author and parent, this book is great!
Dr. Sutton has taken a very stressful life situation for many parents and caregivers, and put it all down on paper in a clear, concise way that we can all understand a learn valuable information from."If My Kid's So Nice..." is well written and straightforward in it's delivery of both clinical explanations and common sense strategies and techniques for helping both the adults and the children. As a psychotherapist and a parent, I believe this book is full of great helpful ideas to better evaluate, understand and manage difficult-child behavioral situations. ... This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Anxiety Disorders, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Minimal information about the relationship between anxiety disorders and externalizing disorders in youth is available. This study examined relationships between different specific anxiety and externalizing disorders and examined whether these associations varied by age and gender. The Methods for the Epidemiology of Child and Adolescent Mental Disorders (MECA) data set, consisting of youth from ages 9 to 17 recruited at four sites across the United States using a probability sampling method, was used. Results indicated that all externalizing disorders (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder) were positively related to a range of anxiety disorders. The magnitude of these associations tended to be stronger for males than for females (particularly for associations between social phobia and all externalizing disorders) and at younger, compared to older, ages (particularly for the association between oppositional defiant disorder and overanxious disorder). The cross-sectional positive relationships between externalizing and anxiety disorders vary somewhat based on gender, age, and which specific pair of disorders is examined; this may help explain the discrepant findings of previous research in this area. ... This second edition of the “Encyclopedia of Drugs, Alcohol, and Addictive Behavior” reflects changes in the attitudes about, use, and knowledge of drugs and alcohol since the first edition published in 1995. These changes include the decrease of crack cocaine use and resurgence of heroin use; changes in laws dealing with drug use (on both the state and national levels), and new discoveries leading to a better understanding of how drugs work and what makes them addictive. More than 700 articles, written for both the student and layperson, cover the social, medical and political issues related to drugs and alcohol, as well exploring and explaining types of addiction.

Product Description
Abstract: The objective of this manuscript was to review the literature relevant to the primary care practitioner concerning comorbidity and its impact on diagnosis and treatment efficacy in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A MEDLINE literature review was performed using the keywords: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; psychiatric comorbidity; bipolar disorder; major depressive disorder; oppositional defiant disorder; conduct disorder; and substance use disorder. The authors assessed and summarized literature identified as relevant to primary care practitioners. Results demonstrated high rates of psychiatric comorbidity in patients with ADHD. These comorbid disorders, coupled with the differing characteristics of ADHD symptoms in adults versus children, may complicate accurate diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. Controlled clinical trials indicate that the presence of comorbidity does not substantially alter the safety and efficacy of ADHD pharmacotherapy and that treatment of ADHD can sometimes improve symptoms of the comorbid disorder. Although rates of psychiatric comorbidity are high in adults with ADHD, available data suggest that the benefits of pharmacotherapy for ADHD are not compromised by the presence of psychiatric comorbidity. ...
