Product Description
Modern vandas are the most spectacular of all cultivated orchids, offering a kaleidoscopic range of colors and often blooming six times a year or more with flowers lasting up to eight weeks. This book presents for the first time a history of the introduction of Vanda species and an accurate modern scientific view of the genus, including exciting developments in hybridization. Drawing on 40 years of practical experience, the author offers a comprehensive horticultural treatment that includes the botany, breeding, care, and cultivation of vandas. All major diseases and pests and their control are discussed. Written for the advanced horticulturist, Vandas addresses not only the culture for temperate greenhouses, but also that for tropical and subtropical gardens and shade houses, the places where these orchids are most commonly grown. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A text book with pretty pictures...
If you are a hard core orchid breeder then this book might be right up your alley... but, if your are interested in orchids for other casual reasons this title might be too technical to enjoy. I just read through the first chapter: "The Discovery of Vandas and Their Introduction to the West." Sounds like there could be great tales of early botanical exploration and adventure... it is nothing but a long list of botanists' names, dates and enough latin to choke a Roman... page after page littered with itlalics and brackets and parenthesis. Yuch! Sure, the pictures are pretty, but they're all on glossy paper in the middle of the book, so any hope of helping the reader with a well placed illustration is lost. The book is jam packed with information and facts about culture, breeding and botany. But, be forwarned that the text, written by a Phd., reads like a reaserch dissertation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A extraordinary book for the beginner vandaceous grower
This is a extraordinary book for anyone who is starting to growvandaceous. It will teach you tricks that you will not find in any otherbook.Everyone that buys this book is lucky enough to be able to share themany many years that Martin Motes has adquired since he first startedgrowing orchids.

3-0 out of 5 stars Far from ideal
This book fails to meet my expectations for either a field guide or a flora; both share the purpose of allowing one to attach a name to a plant. The illustrations are lovely, but the discipline of making them all the same scale and failing to include floral details makes them useless in too many cases. Many of these plants have very small flowers, e.g., Drakea, Corybas, Microtis, and the drawings of the flowers end up being truly tiny, way too small to afford a useful amount of detail. As an example, each illustration of a species of Corybas, plant and flower, is about 1.5 cm square! This will never replace Nicholls (Orchids of Australia), and does not begin to compete with the series issued by Melbourne Universtity Press (The Orchids of Victoria, The Orchids of Tasmania), which manage to convey far more detail in their photographs. This is a pity, because I think the floral details would have been as beautifully done as the whole plant portraits, and would have made this book useful and more beautiful as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars much more than an orchid guide
this long awaited book lives up to expectations.
It's a beautiful book with great paintings by Patricia Dundas. even you're not interested in orchids, this book is just worth it for the drawings.
From the "guide" side, it contains the latest described species and a small description of each. The drawings being all at the same scale are very useful for the determination. Unfortunately it is too big to take on the field and it's lacking a determination key.
Overall a superb book I recommend to anyone interested in plants in general and orchids in particular.

Over the past ten years, the orchid industry has been growing at a steady pace in South-East Asia and East Asia. In some Asian countries, orchids have become an essential export item. To maintain this progress, there is an urgent need for a book that will help the region's orchid growers in improving their cultivation and management skills, and guide new students in understanding orchid physiology. This book provides a comprehensive description of tropical orchid physiology relevant to commercial growers, research workers and graduate students. An integrated and unifying theme of tropical orchid physiology, with a clearly written factual text as well as illustrations, is presented over nine chapters. Each chapter is designed to provide comprehensive and up-to-date information on a particular aspect of orchid physiology. This book complements the existing scientific literature available for improving orchid cultivation and setting a new research agenda, especially in the tropics. ... Read more

Product Description

This lively examination of the structure, classification, evolution, and ecology of the Orchidaceae will appeal to anyone with an eye for beauty or a bent for natural history. It will provide professional biologists and amateur orchidists alike with a deeper understanding--and a thoroughly new classification--of this, the largest flowering family in the plant kingdom.

The book is richly illustrated, with 95 color photographs and 99 line drawings emphasizing orchid morphology. But in the context of serious orchidology, aesthetic richness is not a superficial vanity. It is the result of evolutionary processes that demand adaptation and reward diversity, and Dressler's exploration of these mechanisms demonstrates how well the orchids have met the challenge, with over 20,000 species, a geographical range from Sweden to Tierra del Fuego, and, at times, as many as 47 different species on a single tree. But both the orchids' success and their profligate beauty are grounded, in part, in their voluptuary nature, and one of Dressler's most engaging themes is the reproductive adaptations, worthy of a Renaissance courtesan, that orchids use to attract, deceive, and manipulate pollinating insects.

The orchid family is actively evolving, providing rich possibilities for comparative study. Yet no one, whether professional or amateur, could reasonably proceed without first addressing Robert Dressler's The Orchids. Its new classification alone, including pollination biology, phyletic trends, chromosome counts, and generic relationships, will stand as a watershed contribution to the field.

Product Description
"The hundreds of orchid genera and thousands of species can seem unbelievably complex, but they are beautiful, mysterious, and alluring. Therefore we want reliable ways in which to refer to them--ways that will be understood by those who hear us or read our written communications about these plants. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera will become a convenient reference for those many people who are fascinated by orchids. By referring to this guide, one can find a secure mooring for any species of orchid, one that makes it possible to understand its relatives and its place in the galaxy of orchid variation."--from the Foreword by Peter H. Raven

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera is the most comprehensive and extensively illustrated account of orchid genera to date. Its concise entries provide details of nomenclature, classification, original publication, etymology, and geographic range, along with a brief description and color images of representative flowers.

The dictionary describes not only all of the 850 orchid genera that are recognized today but also those genera known only from fossil records, published before Linnaeus, validly published (but not accepted), and invalidly published according to the standards of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, as well as those that have variant names or spellings. In addition to the alphabetic entries, this dictionary includes an introduction to orchid biology, a glossary, a list of taxonomists credited with publishing new orchid genera, key references and bibliographical abbreviation list, and the governing nomenclature rules. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera also features a Foreword by Peter H. Raven and an Introduction on the biology of orchids by David Benzing that describes the August 2007 discovery of the world's oldest unequivically orchidaceous fossil.

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida, are extensive botanical gardens dedicated to research and collections of epiphytes, especially orchids and bromeliads, and their canopy ecosystems. The Gardens maintain the most diverse collection of bromeliads in the world and feature over 20,000 plants from some 6,000 species in 1,200 genera from 214 plant families, including 6,000 live orchids. This monumental work is yet another manifestation of the collection-an extension of the Gardens into print. ... Read more

My wife asked me to order this book for her birthday.
I accidentally ordered two copies (maybe I double clicked?) of it.

My wife loves the book, and has shown it to her orchid species study group.

We donated the second copy to the curator of orchids at the San Diego Zoo.
That made me a real hero.It was already on her wish list.
