5-0 out of 5 stars Get this map!!!
This map was perfect!! So helpful for navigating a city I've never been to before. Easy to read, has a MAX light rail map AND it's laminated! This map definitely got rained on while we were in Portland so I appreciated that it was laminated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meh
Not everything it is cracked up to be. I would go with a regular map that they sell everywhere instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Map
I have been a fan of the "Streetwise" calendars for years -- a folding laminated city map that always folds nicely, stays firm and fits easily in pockets, purses, etc.

On the reverse side, it also has a wider regional map, which is helpful to put your travels into context, especially if you use the map alongside tour books that often point out destinations outside the downtown region.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easiest to manage Map of portland area
This is a laminated, card stock map that fits easily in a pocket. Very easy to manage. Amazing detail for its' size. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Considering Constraint
Oates walks the legally-imposed and shifting Urban Growth Boundary of Portland (Oregon), talks with the folks he meets (both living and dead), allows a number of them to speak their respective pieces, mulls it all over and considers how planning, in general, and constraint, specifically, play out in the lives of this city and its inhabitants.

I enjoyed especially Oates' conjuring of Italo Calvino, his thoughts about Class, and his views from The Edge in this extended meditation on constraint. It set me wondering if a land use system (and its public faces) can be both flexible and predictable? Both wise and legal? Both wise and electable?

Most of all, I wondered whether we'll ever learn one of the primary lessons Oates derived from his sojourn, "We are connected, and pretending otherwise - following those pied pipers of individualism and libertarianism and privatization - will be ruinous."

Product Description
With its smooth, sandy beach, the quiet coastal town of Pacific City, on the coast of Oregon's Tillamook County, is the perfect home for a unique group of boats. The Pacific City dory fleet has a proud history spanning more than 100 years. Nestled in the natural shelter provided by Cape Kiwanda, the fleet lives on today as one of the most interesting fishing fleets in the world. The small flat-bottomed boats dare the ocean as they crash through the surf headed for the plentiful waters of the Pacific. At day's end, they ride the waves back to shore and slide onto the beach. The original design of the dory allows it to launch from and land on the shore. Through the inherent dangers of ocean fishing, governmental restriction, international fishing competition, and, most recently, the influx of surfers and civilization, the dedicated fishermen have held on to tradition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful photographic record of Oregon's capital
No, not THAT Salem - not the one where witches were put on trial, where Laurie Cabot currently dwells. SALEM: A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF OREGON'S CAPITAL is a wonderful photographic record of the many changes that have taken place in Oregon's (that's the state just above California; the one Lewis and Clark were led to; the home state of Tonya Harding, Bob Packwood, Simpson's creator Matt Groening, and FIGHT CLUB author Chuck Palahniuk) second largest city, from 1840 to 1998. Author Harry H. Stein presents this history in some 320 images and in an accompanying text. His selections present families, homes and entertainment, work, individuals, and many other aspects of Salem's past.

Here is the Salem given life and growing prosperity by the lush Williamette Valley, by the river, land and natural resources, and by what its social groups and institutions made of these opportunities. Here to are the floods and other disasters that limited and shaped what Salem could do.

Here are the nineteenth-century struggles against Piety and Gaiety Hills and the often-repeated struggles between Salem's inward dwelling and outwardly looking segments. Here is the Salem that looks approvingly on the past and the one that insisted that the future guide it. Here are the institutions and the people who wove and rewove Salem's intertwined civic, economic, educational, and culture existence.

SALEM: A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF OREGON'S CAPITAL will be of interest to any current resident of the city, prospective future residents of the city, all Oregonians (after all, this is your state's capital), and any student of general US history. I myself really appreciated seeing this testimony to the history and beauty of Oregon's second city. I particularly enjoyed the photographs of the 1920s Salem, reminding me of family legend which holds that my great grandmother visited Salem in the 1920s and commented that it is was the most beautiful city she'd ever seen.

Excerpt: PascoKennewick Bridge (1922) -It was completed in 1922 after only a year of construction, replacing an outmoded ferry system in which a single trip transported a maximum of six cars across the Columbia River. It was in fact the first bridge for vehicular traffic across the middle part of the Columbia River (only ferries and rail bridges were previously available). Originally planned in 1913 by B. B. Horrigan, funding was not secured until 1919, when Charles G. Huber of the Union Bridge Company sold $49,000 worth of stock to finance the project, despite the country being in the grips of the Post-World War I recession. It was the first bridge of that size to be financed entirely with stock sales. The bridge was operated as a toll bridge for the first nine years; the tolls were removed once the initial construction costs ($480,000) had been repaid. It was also the first of three cantilever bridges built over the Columbia River in the 1920s. The construction of the bridge was seen as a landmark in the development of the state's economy. The significance of the bridge is partly reflected in the beliefs and expectations of local and state residents who perceived the dedication as a history-making event, bringing together people from across the state; a gala affair that included speeches, car caravans, picnics, street dancing, and carnivals. Read more
