Product Description

Mary Rockwood Powers reluctantly left her comfortable life as a doctor's wife in Wisconsin in 1856, one of the many women whose destiny as a settler of the West was determined by her husband's wishes. Trading in her home for canvas roof and wheels, Mary, her husband, and their three children set out on the arduous trek westward to California.

Shortly into their travels west, it became painfully obvious that Doctor Powers was simply not up to the task of making sure his family "outlasted the trail." Mary had to step in and become the head of the household with its canvas roof and wheels--leaving behind her ideals of femininity along with her beloved possessions.

In Outlasting the Trail author Mary Barymeyer O'Brien uses the letters Mary Rockwood Powers wrote to her mother and sister back home as a stepping off point to further illuminate this remarkable woman's story. Based on the dramatic struggle a real family, this novel brings to life a fascinating slice of American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outlasting The Trail
I enjoyed this book very much. Have an interest in history from doing Family Tree research. Am finding Women in history we never learned about in school. It's great to see how our ancestors lived and the joys and trials they lived through.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible story
I purchased this book at the High Desert Museum in Bend OR.I thought it was a great book that including incredible details about surviving the trail.I personally can't believe that people were able to survive it with what provisions they had. When I was done with the book I was hoping there was more - I wish there would have been a book about what their lives were like after they moved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank God I was born now
I have a fascination with wagon trains and this was s good story of one womans trip. What would make them endure that hardship?I have the adventure itch too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great read!
Read this book on my Kindle and could not stop reading it. I probably would have killed my husband if he was this man, this woman endured more terrors than anyone should in her trip west via covered wagon. She had to resort to begging for food to feed her family after her husband causes them to be kicked off the wagon train leaving them stranded alone and with very little in the way of supplies. What a tragedy for all of them when they finally arrive "across the mountains".

2-0 out of 5 stars Outlasting the Trail - The Story of a Woman's Journey West
I was very disappointed in this book.It was listed in the history section but it is really a novel incorporating the letters and diaries of an actual person. The problem is that the dialogue and description are more like a Nancy Drew installment."Mary bit her dirty thumbnail." and "Mary felt her body go cold," are examples of the kind of description used.Perhaps it would be better received in the historical novel section.I was anticipating a well researched non-fiction account of a woman's trek across the country. ... Product Description
One of the state's most spectacular scenic regions, Oregon's southern coast is also rich in history. Fur trade explorer Jedediah Smith, Coos Indian Annie Miner Peterson, lumber baron Louis Simpson, and writer Zane Grey are just a few of the fascinating individuals who helped shape South Coast history. This indispensable guide and reference work opens with an overview of South Coast history, from prehistory to the present. This first section presents in-depth looks at the region's native peoples, early exploration, white settlement, Indian-white warfare, the forest industry, transportation, and town development. The second section follows the route taken along the South Coast in 1828 by Jedidiah Smith, one of the foremost explorers of the American West. It describes key historic sites from the California/Oregon border to Heceta Head. Drawing on journal entries, the author traces the advance of Smith's expedition, and recounts its troubled relations with coastal Indians and its tragic ending. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Applegate Trail of 1846
Great historic book. As one who leads tours every summer across the Applegate-Lassen Trail (in Northern Nevada), www.offroadexperience.com to see it first hand in August 2009. I found the book a fun and interesting read... it's great see those same landmarks, watering holes and graves that those in the mid/late 1800's saw. [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting, involving true story
William Emerson's The Applegate Trail Of 1846: A Documented Guide To The Original Southern Emigrant Route To Oregon is a fascinating historical book, peppered with twelve illustrations, twelve maps, and thirty-five black-and-white photographs, of the first wagon train to follow the route through southern Oregon that would one day be known as the Applegate Trail. An exciting, involving true story made all the more compelling by the meticulous documentation, The Applegate Trail Of 1846 is enhanced with an appendix of names (which includes the other names for the Applegate Trail, names of the exploring party, the volunteer road party, emigrants on the first wagon train, names of the relief parties), a bibliography, and an extensive index. An amazing look into the trials and travails of settling the American West, The Applegate Trail Of 1846 is a recommended addition to school and community library western American history collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Settlement of Southern Oregon
I found this a great read.It covers the history of Southern Oregan from the Hudson's Bay Trapping days to the early settlements.Emerson notes the early settlers by name and covers the blazing of the Applegate trail and the true history of this region.

There are few books about this place and time in history and this is by far the best I have ever read.He covers the topic in great detail, this book details how the other trails were used in forging this all important route for immigrants. The book is full of pictures and drawings of the area and settlers. It also includes detailed maps of the trails discussed. Anyone interested in the settlement of Southern Oregon and it's history will find this book a great and informative read. ... Read more

The Corps of Discovery’s exploration of the western United States between 1804 and 1806 resulted in a vast amount of information about the peoples, birds and other wildlife, and flora the expedition members encountered. This book pairs excerpts from the Reuben Gold Thwaites edition of the Lewis and Clark journals with images of landscapes and artifacts, allowing readers to better see and understand the explorers’ journey from the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean. Many of the historic photographs show sites that have since been transformed or eradicated by geological or human forces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The journey was wonderful despite, putrid elk and mosquitos,
Wandering around West Yellowstone, Montana waiting for the weather to clear, I discovered this treasure.I wanted to find out how Lewis & Clark managed without a trailer equipped with microwave, Gortex and DEET. Manage they did. The thrill of discovery outweighed the difficulties. This was my first read of the corps of discovery. It serves as an introduction. The selected sectionsof the journals are followed by explanations and interpretations. The black and white photos of the described sites and plants complement the text beautifully. The feeling of "being there" comes off the page. The maps are somewhat difficult to follow. As an introduction and a pick-up during the Montana thunderstorms, it made a fine addition to a well rounded vacation. ... Read more

Devil's Gate--the very name conjures difficult passage and portends a doubtful outcome. In this eloquent and captivating narrative, Tom Rea traces the history of the Sweetwater River valley in central Wyoming--a remote place that includes Devil's Gate, Independence Rock, and other sites along a storied stretch of the Oregon Trail--to show how legal ownership of a place can translate into owning its story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Worthwhile Reading
This well written book provides historical depth on the Oregon Trail as well as interesting reading that gets an important message across about historical truth. Highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars History with a perceptive twist
At times history can be a Gatling gun of fact and speculation and cause the reader to separate truth from fiction. The underlying theme of Tom Rea's fine work is that given a certain geographical area (in this case Devil's Gate along Wyoming's Sweetwater River), it is the land itself that owns the true stories of space and time.People simply tell them, sometimes to fit their own needs.

Recruiting and interweaving stories from days gone by of this region, whether it be John Fremont mapping the territory, experiences of Oregon Trail emigrants, the Mormon handcarters, mid-nineteenth century Indian wars, Billy Owen's surveying or Hiram Chittenden's engineering for dam sites, to feuds with neighboring ranchers ("Cattle Kate" lynching), water rites, grazing laws, up to the present-day, this is a gifted undertaking of connecting historical meaning.

Enjoyed the stories.Benefited from the insightful viewpoint as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wyoming History
This books does a good job of summerizing many historic events in Wyoming's past to a very unique and sometimes forgotten place. It was interesting to read accounts of some of these historic events and some not so historic and obscure events and how this country tied into them. It was an enjoyable read of history but also posed an underlying troubling trend today. It is a very interesting "history" book in that aspect. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Trail
After reading this book I would suggest it to who ever maybe doing family history (like me) or history research period. It is a good book and has some interesting stuff in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Trail
Excellent history account. Very accurate and detailed. The best book I've ever read on wagon train history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lowell Tiller passed away 7-1-2010
Author of this book passed away today on 7-1-2010.A great loss for the world. He was a very kind and gentle man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work
A relative of mine made the trip to Oregon in 1845 and took the Meek Cutoff.Stories of it abound in the family lore. I was trying to reconstruct some family history and found this book to be valuable - it clarified a great deal about the adventures of those who took that path.It is well written and entertaining as well as full of facts. There must have been an enormous amount of work and research done to complete the book. Highly recommended, especially if you have relatives who made that trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, authoritative account of early Oregon history
This project is by far the best accounting of the ill-fated 1845 Stephen Meek led wagon train I have ever read. The authors have done an exceptional job in piecing together the tragic events and human errors that contibutedto making this one of the most moving stories from the Manifest Destinyera. The genealogical references alone make this document a must for everyfamily researcher. ... Read more

Product Description
Thunder Over the Ochoco is literally the work of alifetime. Its author spent 40 years combing historical records andinterviewing dozens of descendants of pioneer settlers and NativeAmericans who shared oral traditions that have been passed downthrough generations.

What emerges is history as it has never been told before. Ahistory of conquistadors and fur trappers, of merchants andmissionaries. The history of an Indian war that was one of the longestand bloodiest conflicts ever fought on American soil, but which forpolitical and economic reasons was covered up for decades. Above all,the history of “those first settlers of the Ochoco—men, woman, and children—who were left to wander and starve in a land theythought belonged to them through eternity, a people who in their finalagony cried out: `Nimma ne-umpu!'—`We too are human!’

Gale Ontko tells this story with compassion and grace, in a stylethat combines the precision of the scholar with the vigor and drama ofthe novelist. The five volumes comprise nearly 2500 printed book pagesand have been described by some as the most factual writing by anyauthor on the history of the Shoshoni People.

Volume I of Gale Ontko's epic five volume series covers hundredsof years from pre-Columbian times to the collapse of the world furtrade in 1840. Volume I meets the Shoshoni Indians before the arrivalof the Europeans and tracks their rise from peaceful eastern Oregonagriculturists to the aggressive Snake war tribes, rulers of thePacific Northwest. By 1812, they had clashed with every major worldpower in their jealous guardianship of a land they calledOyerungun. Their undisputed hunting grounds beyond the setting sunwould soon become coveted by white foreigners searching first forprecious metals and later for valuable fur-bearing animals. Thegathering storms of hatred would hover ominously on the distanthorizons. Volume I chronicles the events which inevitably would leadto war. ... Read more
