Product Description
This lecture is designed for all students of Oriental Medicine Medical Schools, as well as for any one who is interested in Acupuncture. The subject of aetiology is the study of the causative factors of disease, whilst the study of pathogenesis concerns the actual bodily processes whereby disease occurs, develops and changes. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that there is nor¬mally a state of relative equilibrium be¬tween the human body and the external environment on the one hand, and among the zang-fu organs within the body on the other hand. This equilibrium is not stat¬ic, but is in a state of constant self-adjustment, and in this way the normal physiological activities of the body are maintained. If external influences exceed the powers of adaptability of the organ¬ism, or if the body itself is unable to adjust to changing conditions, then this relative equilibrium will be lost, and di¬sease will develop. This is the basic view¬point of traditional Chinese medicine re¬garding pathogenesis. Audio lecture discusses main topics of aetiology and pathogenesis in great details. ... Read more

Product Description
This expanded 2nd edition contains 70 additional pages, including 21 new case studies and a newly designed 16-page color section, with new treatment photographs. The new material focuses on sound layering techniques that integrate the use of high, middle, and low frequency tuning forks in the therapeutic environment.

History, science, mysticism, and healing are interwoven in this rich and instructive text. Reaching back to ancient views of the Universe and the Sumerian and Taos teachings, it explores the Great Theme and reunites us with a greater understanding of the Music of the Spheres.

This practical guide to healing with sound draws the connections between Eastern and Western science, medicine, mysticism, and music, and also provides specific treatment protocols, case studies, and detailed illustrations that demonstrate acupuncture, acupressure, and chakra and trigger points that are used in healing with the Acutonics Tuning Fork System. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated
I was deeply disappointed in this trival "2nd edition" that adds little in the way of useful material to the previous manuscript. I fully agree with the comments made about the difficulties in using this book, and I say that with over a decade of experience as an acupuncturist.

Since I work as a professional medical textbook editor, after taking classes with the Kairos Institute and obtaining the 1st edition of the book, I sent a lengthy letter containing several suggestions to make the book more useful and clinically applicable. Some mirror the comments made here and I can't imagine I was the only one to make such observations. Sadly, none of these suggestions were incorporated into the 2nd edition.

I should say at the outset that Donna (and Marjorie, when she was an instructor) are both gifted practitioners and should be acknowledged for their pioneering work in this area. Their strengths as Acutonics practitioners and musically-oriented artists, which is predominantly a right-brained activity, is unfortunately at odds with the left-brained requirements of transmitting information via a textbook and the book suffers because of this dichotomy.

The structure of the book can best be described as improvisational, which will be delightful to those who enjoy a more mystical approach to writing. But those looking for practical information about technique will be frustrated as the text run hither and yon with very little substantive data that is applicable to learning how to use the tuning forks. The primitive, hand-drawn illustrations in the book, while poetic, convey little practical information. It is difficult to see how anyone without an acupuncture background could meaningfully make sense of this book or learn anything from it in terms of usefully manipulating the tuning forks. It would seem the lay public was not the target audience and perhaps the book was intended as a companion text for those who have actually taken the Acutonics classes. But having taken some of the classes, I will say I have rarely consulted the 1st edition and there is little reason to do so with the 2nd edition.

Another weakness of this book is that the theoretical underpinnings of Acutonics are poorly expounded upon in my opinion, coming across largely as a mismash of alchemy, mathematics, Pythagorean theory, and music theory. Apparently, Acutonics was based in part on the work of Hans Cousto, but he is mentioned only long enough for the reader to be assured that the creators have "gone beyond" his work. While theory is not absolutely necessary to be able to apply Acutonics, the lack of skill in being able to communicate it does undermine credibility. I do not think this is just a weakness of transmission - I think the creators haven't applied enough rigorous analytical thought to this area to make it useful to the working clinician. The Acutone system by Dean Lloyd does better in this regard, being that he took pains to explain his choices of tuning fork resonances by referencing the classic Chinese literature. However, that system will not work with the Acutonics tuning forks.

The second edition mainly adds case studies along with a chapter called Acutonics Techniques, Intervals, and Applications. This was exactly what was missing from the 1st edition, and I was excited to see its inclusion. As it turns out the chapter, from start to finish, is a series of photographs that succeeds only as product placement for Kairos' stratosphericly-priced tuning forks. There is really no information here on techniques, intervals, or applications except, perhaps, how to tunify a cockatoo. No, I am not making that up. To call this a chapter is laughable and, in my mind, reinforces the unfortunate perception that this book is a cynical cash-grab at the expense of Kairos' readers and students.

If you have the 1st edition, and I feel your pain, there is no need to upgrade. If you simply must have this book, buy a used copy of the 1st edition as it will be cheaper and you will miss little information. Otherwise, if you want to learn Acutonics, you will get much more benefit from taking the classes. Relegate the 2nd edition to the ethers.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I am a new acupuncturist that has taken an acutonics course before, and I love using tuning forks in my treatments. My treatments always seem more intense when I use tuning forks.I was feeling a like I needed another class, or a good book to learn more and my mentor recommended this one.I absolutely love this book.It has helped me so much.It gives you history so that you can understand the backround of how tuning forks were ever used in healing, and it gives you great guidelines on how to use them and which tuning fork would be good for what technique. There are also pictures.I think this book would be great for any beginner as well as a refresher for those who need one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical and Useful Guide for Self-Care
This new 2nd edition of Acutonics: There's No Place Like Ohm is even better than the first. I find the new color treatment insert and the new case studies extremely valuable as a guide in treating myself, my family, and friends! The book is beautifully illustrated and gives a wonderful history of sound healing and the Music of the Spheres.

3-0 out of 5 stars Info I needed I couldn't find in this book
Specifically when I bought this book, I was looking for a more practical guide to using the forks that I recently purchased from Acutonics.I am in love with the forks, and they have increased the effectiveness of my work by leaps and bounds! (however the forks themselves do not even come with information regarding the specific frequency or any suggestions for practical applications - information not available on the website). This book is,in my humble opinion, a marketing tool used by the Kairos institute in order to make a few extra dollars when taken in conjunction with their classes (they sell this book for $64.95 on their website!).I could have more easily learned online the actual history of vibration and sound healing, instead of trying to read it in the book.It is more like a history oriented text book - written by the creators of the Acutonics System of Healing, and less of a hands on practical application guide - which is what I was expecting with this book.Since I have very limited experience with meridians and accupuncture the style of this book was not at all helpful to me.There are no reference guides as to the locations of the points or meridians. The book does have a chapter on clinical testimonials by some therapists (all licensed accupuncturists & teachers at the Kairos Institute) that is pretty confusing for the non initiated. What would have made this an outstanding book would have been to include a reference section on the fork's freqencies and accupuncture points and meridians (at the very least the ones referenced in the book) so the self learning reader doesn't have to find another book just to use in conjunction with this one - or take the courses!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read.....
Very informative book and a unique look at healing. Even if you
don't use the sound healing and tuning fork protocol healing outlined in this book, you will come away knowing more about the Shamanistic origins of Chinese Medicine and the Tao,and the link between Music and Science.
There is also an opportunity to learn a great deal about acupuncture points and music and sound.
I use tuning forks, but have lent this book to friends who do not who thought the book was a good read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Balance through Compass of Health
It's amazing to read Dr. Kim's work and find my own constitution described. You will too! Find your body type and then understand your body's strengths and weaknesses, what foods help and/or hurt you, what type friend you make. He even provides a list of famous people with similar body types, like Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee. Even the hero and villan sets Kim describes are intriguingly paired; his descriptions help me understand how balanced the whole world is and how we can understand ourselves more clearly by understanding concepts laid out in Kim's interesting, first-rate book. If you're into keeping healthy, Compass of Health is a must read!

Product Description
The volume investigates how Paul of Aegina's medical handbook or pragmateia was transmitted and transformed through Syriac and Arabic translations, becoming one of the cornerstones of the Islamic medical tradition. It uses new manuscript evidence in order to explore the crucial impact of Paul's pragmateia, tracing its steps through different languages and cultures in the Middle East. A discussion of different Syriac and Arabic authors who quote the pragmateia such as Ibn Serapion and Rhazes is followed by detailed studies of Greek-Syriac-Arabic translation technique, examining, for instance, ophthalmologic terminology, and giving a critical appraisal of translation syntax and lexicography. Paul's influence on the development of medical theory in the Islamic world and beyond is also addressed, making it an important contribution not only to Graeco-Arabic studies, but also to the history of medicine in general. ... This is a great book for current practitioners and students of Chinese Medicine, regardless if your dicipline is herbal, acupuncture, or both. It's main approach is 8 principle, but those of the 5 element philosphy can gain from it also. The lay person may have a difficult time understanding without being familiar with the general philosphy of Chinese Medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much underappreciated
I've always thought this is a great textbook on basic Chinese medicine. I wish more schools used it as their basic introductory text. The material is authoritative and the terminology is accurate. I think you get a lot of value for your money with this book. I far prefer it to Giovanni Maciocia's Foundations book. This book could solve a lot of the problems in the TCM schools in North America.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, FUNDAMENTAL, ESSENTIAL!!
This book is like a complete textbook on Chinese Medicine. It goes over all the fundamental theories in great depth and detail. Beginning with the Yin-Yang theories and going through the Five Phases, 8 principles, and everything else, this book provides all the necessary information. It does read like a textbook, but only because it IS a textbook! I am not enrolled in a school of Oriental medicine, but I bought this book and I LOVE it. It was inexpensive for its size and the amount of information it provides. I am able to read it even though I have not had any formal training in TCM, yet I think experienced students and even practitioners will find this book useful and complete.
An essential must for any TCM library!

3-0 out of 5 stars good book, confusing translation
I like the book, but the translation seems confusing at times.Forexample, on p. 29: "The channels and network vessels include thechannel vessels and the network vessels."What does this mean, exactly?Grammatically, the sentence says only that "channels"include "channel vessels" (since network vessels obviouslyinclude network vessels -- the sentence is redundant.)Also, grammatically, "channel vessels" should be a kind of vessel, related to channels (as opposed to networks). To make things moreconfusing, a few lines later, we get: "There are two types of channelvessels: the twelve channels and the eight extraordinary vessels." This sentence says that a "channel" is a type of "channelvessel", which seems to contradict the earlier sentence (which saidthat a "channel vessel" was a type of channel), as well as thenotion that a "channel vessel" is a type of vessel. As asoftware engineer experienced in object-oriented analysis, I'm frustratedthat I'm completely unable to determine the relationship between"channels", "channel vessels", "networkvessels", "extraordinary vessels", and "vessels".

5-0 out of 5 stars A good rival to Maccioca's intro text.
This is one of the better introductory texts to the study of Chinese medical theory. What it has and others lack are helpful footnotes along the way to solidify the many, often confusing and sometime non-discernable,concepts in Chinese medicine. In addition, readers are eased into thebasics of Chinese materia medica by having such information intertwinedwithin the theoretical discourse.A real gem. ...
