Product Description
Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture is disrupted, and the amount and variety of non-collagenous proteins in bone is altered. Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in women as a bone mineral density 2.5 standard deviations below peak bone mass (20-year-old healthy female average) as measured by DXA; the term 'established osteoporosis' includes the presence of a fragility fracture. Osteoporosis is most common in women after menopause, when it is called postmenopausal osteoporosis, but may also develop in men, and may occur in anyone in the presence of particular hormonal disorders and other chronic diseases or as a result of medications, specifically glucocorticoids, when the disease is called steroid - or glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (SIOP or GIOP). Given its influence on the risk of fragility fracture, osteoporosis may significantly affect life expectancy and quality of life. This book presents the latest research results in the field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better Bones, Better Body
Good bone health requires more than drinking lots of milk or taking calcium supplements.Dr. Susan E. Brown explains it all in her book, Better Bones, Better Body, a "comprehensive self-help program for preventing, halting and overcoming osteoporosis."

A medical anthropologist and certified nutritionist, Dr. Brown currently directs the Osteoporosis Project and the Nutrition Education and Consulting Service. She says that osteoporosis is a "needless disorder [that] barely exists in much of the world."It is "a disease of Western civilization created by our lifestyles."Because it's a disease we have created, it is one we can eliminate.

Dr. Brown says her extensive research enables her to say that "I now know that osteoporosis is preventable and that it can be halted once begun.I also know that it is to some degree reversible."Her book details precisely what causes osteoporosis and how to prevent its development.

Although many of us think of bone as being something that is solid and unchanging, it is actually living tissue.Old bone tissue is constantly being dissolved and replaced with new bone.Dr. Brown says that "every atom in our skeleton is replaced within a three-month period."While calcium is certainly a key player in building new bones, it doesn't work alone. At least 17 other nutrients are needed. The standard American diet either doesn't provide those nutrients, or provides them in inadequate quantities. Not only are most Americans slighted on the essential nutrients, they consume too much animal protein.Calcium is actually withdrawn from bone tissue in order to metabolize protein, which contributes to the development of osteoporosis.

Dr. Brown explains how to evaluate your personal risk of developing osteoporosis. She offers hope when she says "it is never too late to begin building healthy bone.Even the aged confined to wheelchairs have been able to build bone mass with simple exercises and modest nutritional supplementation." Dr. Brown then provides comprehensive instructions for individualizing a program to suit your needs. The basics of osteoporosis prevention and reversal are sound nutritional practices and regular strength-building exercise.Dr. Brown offers guidelines and examples for making those basics a part of your lifestyle.

Not only is Better Bones, Better Health a must-read for every Western woman, it's also essential for men and adolescents.Buy a copy for yourself, and extras for your loved ones--help banish this unnecessary disease from your life and theirs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an alternative to the Fosomax party line
The only publication I've seen that doesn't slavishly recommend fosomax as the only way to reverse osteoporosis. I was heartened to see a positive review of this book from a physician on Amazon.com, because when Imentioned these authors' recommendation of calcium plus ipriflavone at alecture by a local internist, he dismissed it out of hand (and out ofignorance of its existence) as "one of those rumors that fly aroundthe Internet." The only problem is, how do you find a physician who iswilling to help you try this regimen, which apparently is far safer thanFosomax? The authors do not explain how to find a nutritionally orienteddoctor in a world of simplistic, cookie-cutter, prescription-pad,one-solution-for-all medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel compelled to recommend it to all of my patients.
As a physician, I found this book to be very informative and well written and does a great job of explaining exactly what is causing the bone tissue to lose calcium and therefore bone mass as we age.The book also explainshow calcium and other minerals and supplements exert their effect on thebone. As I said before, I strongly recommend this book for all women, regardless of age, if you have an interest in preventing or treating thisvery common condition. ... Product Description
Osteoporosis is one of the most clinically relevant disabling chronic disease encountered in clinical practice. A common cause of osteoporosis is glucocorticoid excess, as glucocorticoids may increase bone resorption, inhibit bone formation, have indirect actions on bone by decreasing intestinal calcium absorption and induce hypercalciuria. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the effects of glucocorticoids on bone metabolism and structure and on the diagnosis and treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. It aims at providing updated information on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this often dramatic complication of glucocorticoid excess. Being one of the few publications completely devoted to glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis it will heighten the awareness of specialists who prescribe glucocorticoids of the clinical relevance of this treatment complication. "Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis" is addressed to clinical experts as well as to general practitioners. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
I was recently diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis. I am 54 with the bones of an 85 year old. I was at first shocked followed by depression, frustration and despair. I bought a stack of books on osteoporosis, all informative and valuable, but it is this one together with Linda Sparrowe's YOGA FOR HEALTHY BONES that gently turned me around, opened my heart, lifted me out of the depth of my depression and inspired me to return to my yoga practice. Jan Maddern in YOGA BUILDS BONESwrites with authority and yet with a sensitivity that makes me trust her yoga program and motivates me to help myself heal and strengthen my weakened bones. She has helped heal my fragile heart as well as my fragile bones and I thank her.

4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure
This is truly a wonderful book, beautifully and thoughtfully written, with valuable information, excellent exercises, stretches and meditations. It condenses some of the valuable treasures yoga offers in spare, intelligent prose that seem lit from within. I would recommend it for any younger, healthy woman wishing to prevent osteoporosis in later life or looking for a way to balance hormones naturally now.

Someone older and anyone with health problems should definitely show this book to her doctor before plunging in. Many of the poses require a great deal of strength in the upper body and great flexibility.

I gave it only four stars because having just one illustration per exercise or stretch, most of which are multi-stepped, is often not sufficient for a person new to yoga, as I am, to figure out how to do the sequences correctly. Although I read the instructions a number of times before trying each pose, I fear I might do something wrong and inadvertently hurt myself. Still, this isn't insurmountable: I have other books which show many of the poses in more detail, and a video. I think a teacher or a class would be most helpful, too, for anyone planning to buy this book.

All in all, though, it is a great book which will get a lot of use: a real treasure!

Product Description
Osteoporosis is a devastating disorder with significant physical and psychosocial consequences. For example, one in three women and one in 12 men over the age of 50 in the UK already suffer from osteoporosis, and every three minutes it is estimated that someone has a fracture due to this disease. This pattern is repeated elsewhere in the world. However, due to the remarkable progress in the scientific understanding of its causes, diagnosis and treatment, osteoporosis is now largely preventable. "Osteoporosis: An Atlas of Investigation and Management" is a pictorial reference book designed to help doctors understand, prevent and overcome osteoporosis. This practical guide gives advice on how to diagnose and manage patients with this condition and reviews the epidemiology, symptoms, clinical investigations, and the various treatments and interventions. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information.
I was pleased with this book.I've been a vegetarian for about a year and I wanted to know if I was getting the right amount of protein in my diet. Now I have a thorough understanding of soy, its pros and cons.I passed the book along to my daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soy Smart Health: for women & men
Soy Smart Health comes across as slightly too simple.

They should have spent a bit more time editing the text... as there are plenty of opportunities for laying it out better or expressing ideas more clearly (expected more from a bunch of PH.D's): They tend to repeat themselves a lot in rapid succession but not in a way that is useful.

The book explains the different effects of phyto-estrogens & estrogens very well but they miss the opportunity to tie this in with xeno-estrogens neatly.

Women with breast cancer who want to know whether or not Soy phyto-estrogens will make things better or worst may gain some insight. Unfottunately the book seems to only highlight the positives and fails to mention any of the negative opinions.

It is also relevant to women with Estrogen Dominance Syndrome that might be suffering from Endometriosis: You gain a whole new respect and understanding for the balancing role of progesterone.

It does have a few negative things to say about Soy oil (Omega 6 oils)... but it's a bit short on detail.

The book is not just for women... although the author certainly gives this impression.

To balance it up a bit they could have added a section on men... as men too can have high estrogen levels (from xenoestrogens).

The devil is in the detail with most things... soy as well... and it seems like there's still a bit more they need to explain... and which remains unexplained in this book. Not sure why they didn't go the extra mile as there's a lot more they could/should have added.

This book is mostly pro-soy and may leave those who want a balanced and well informed argument feeling short changed.

The Dark side of Soy by Kaayla T Daniels was a much more thoroughly researched book and thus much more informative.

:-)

Product Description
Osteoporosis is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among the elderly. The rationale for The Osteoporosis Primer is to provide an introductory text that relates the clinical presentation of osteoporosis to its molecular biochemical basis. The text has been organized into four sections that deal with the molecular/cellular components of bone, the development of peak bone mass, the pathophysiology of aging bone and finally, how all of these relate to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis. The international team of authors includes many leading clinicians and scientists who have provided the reader with a concise, yet comprehensive, synopsis of bone development and skeletal homeostasis. This book will be an essential introduction for individuals working on osteoporosis, including students and doctors considering a career related to metabolic bone disease, general practitioners, geriatricians, rheumatologists, and endocrinologists. ... Product Description
This first-ever Surgeon General’s Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases.

This Surgeon General’s Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives.

This first-ever Surgeon General’s Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals’ reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions. ...
