Book Description

Sea otters are one of the most charismatic marine mammals. Capable of living their entire lives free of contact with land, they eat, sleep, and give birth at sea. Hunted relentlessly for centuries, these appealing creatures were brought back from the brink of extinction in the twentieth century: an achievement that is being championed as one of the great success stories in marine conservation. Glenn VanBlaricom traces the turbulent history of the species and discusses their fascinating behavior. World-class photographers capture the spirit of this most lovable animal.

This lively book tells young readers everything they want to know about the life and behavior of the southern sea otter, its northern cousin, and lesser-known river otters. It's all here for the budding biologist or zoologist, or the just-plain-curious kid: otter methods of courtship and reproduction, eating habits, and the animal's complex relationship with humankind, including how these playful animals continue to be threatened by oil spills and the encroachment of human society. 5-0 out of 5 stars I don't have time to write reviews but...
I just had to say, in case anyone is looking for science bookswhich can both entertain and inform their young children, this title is a delight! The illustrations are endearing, but the text is what stands out in the book, for--unlike most children's "science" twaddle out there--it is truly lyrical.Children don't need short, choppy sentences which merely regurgitate bland facts in a shotgun approach to "teaching" or "informing".That kind of writing certainly doesn't make for interesting reading! My young reader was delighted with the tale of young Otter, my 2-year-old equally enthralled.I know a book is a keeper when I am asked to read it again immediately.

This book has both literary and scientific merit.A rare find in my search for homeschool materials that can impart knowledge, love for learning and the enjoyment of reading quality prose, all in one appealing package. Not sure as I type this what age is recommended, but my son is currently about halfway through first grade level reading and will be able to tackle this by himself within a year at most.A child up to age 8 would be delighted by this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
This book is laborious, overwritten and poor quality. It is as if the author is trying to demonstrate how many words one can fit into a sentence. For insight into Otters, at a child's reading level, choose a different book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A scientifically accurate, highly enjoyable tale
Otter On His Own: The Story Of A Sea Otter is a children's story by Doe Boyle about a young otter growing up in the natural world. Book Description
Long admired by nature lovers and marine scientists, the sea otter is extraordinarily well adapted to the sea, where it can spend an entire life span eating, sleeping, giving birth, and rearing its young without ever coming ashore. Richly illustrated, The World of the Sea Otter is both an authoritative natural history and a visual celebration of this playful creature.

"This book is a work of art -- from the attractive format, to the superb color photos, to the clear writing ... the love that both author and photographer obviously have for their subject makes this book a delight to any reader.... Highly Recommended" -- The Book Report

"This graceful weaving of text and photography combines the natural history of the sea otter with the story of the species' struggle for survival.... The end result is a call to action for this endangered species." -- Animals

"The World of the Sea Otter is both a scientific look into the life of the sea otter and a pictorial showcase of the creature's habits, hunting methods, and social behavior, including its fight for survival."

5-0 out of 5 stars Otterly fascinating
This beautifully illustrated book tells us plenty about the smallest sea mammal. It begins by showing some wonderful pictures of sea otters and telling about their ultradensely furry waterproof coats.A sea otter can wander onto land, but it is very clumsy out of the water. It may spend its whole life in the sea.

About 300 years ago, there were over 150,000 sea otters, maybe twice that many. But there was extensive hunting which reduced the population to one or two thousand. In 1911, the remaining ones were protected under the Fur Seal agreement. Now, the population is back to 150,000.They tend to live off the California coast, off Vancouver Island, off the Aleutians and off the Kuriles.

Sea otters don't like deep water, because they want to find food on the sea floor. And they prefer a depth of only about 75 feet, although they can dive twice that deep.We get to see photos of sea otters at lunch, and of some of the food available to them.

We also are told of how the sea otter has fared in its interactions with humans. We've hunted them, and threatened them with atom bomb tests and oil spills. But now they seem to be doing better.I think it would be a terrible shame if we were unable to protect these marvellous creatures.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best popular book available on the loveable otter
This book is very well researched and clearly written. However, it is the photography which makes it a masterpiece. Jeff Foott's pictures are incredibly sensitive and perceptive. He takes the reader not only into the nature of the otter itself, but also into the milieu of Monterey Bay with it's abundant food supply, opportunities for procreation, and human and non-human hazards. ...
