Editorial Review

Product Description
Chemistry and Physics of Stratospheric Ozone will provide an in-depth account of chemical and physical properties of stratospheric ozone, which will be valuable to a wide audience.
The research of the last decade has produced as many arguments as answers, and the author provides a good account of both the accepted and provocative resolutions.

* Focuses on the important aspects of stratospheric ozone that are needed to understand most of the literature
* Provides extensive discussion of the natural and human-induced changes to the "ozone layer"
* Includes homework problems at the end of each chapter

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent general book on stratospheric chemistry
This is an excellent book on stratospheric chemistry and transport. It reads much more quickly than the denser "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion" reports issued by the WMO, but it still includes all the important details. Even though it specializes in stratospheric chemistry, many of the concepts can be applied to tropospheric chemistry as well. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Humankind has dramatically altered the composition of the atmosphere during the past 150 years, chiefly by increasing the concentrations of naturally occurring greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and, in the last half century, by introducing new ones. Excessive amounts of greenhouse gases trap heat, which the earth would normally radiate back to space, thereby affecting the energy-storage capacity of the atmosphere and oceans.
In recent decades the ozone layer has been severely damaged by man-made chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Though their use is now prohibited, they will remain in the atmosphere for many decades and, with their effects exacerbated by global warming, will continue to destroy ozone for many years to come.
The greatest concern for our well-being during the next millennium is that a modified climate now seems inevitable. How much can we afford to let it change? This highly accessible book introduces and explains the processes causing these interrelated environm ... Read more

Product Description
Do changes in stratospheric ozone relate to changes in UV-B irradiance and do both relate to life on Earth? This volume presents the latest data available in the basic scientific disciplines associated with these questions. The key topics are the interactive factors between the various research elements and the measurements needed to both validate ozone depletion and monitor UV flux changes in the biosphere. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
One of the principal concerns in recent years regarding the atmospheric environment has been the formation of ozone and other photo-oxidants over much of Europe in the summer. Ozone is formed in the atmosphere by a complex series of chemical reactions in the presence of sunlight from volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides. As the reactions take place in air flows determined by the detailed meteorological situation, the measurement, interpretation, understanding and modelling of the levels, fluxes and origins of the ozone are extremely difficult. The present volume reviews several of the currently important questions and presents detailed reports from investigators all over the continent. As such, it provides insight into the current scientific views about ozone in Europe. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is to facilitate interactions among researchers in the key areas of field measurements, laboratory studies and modeling who have experience in air chemistry of the continental lower troposphere, the stratosphere and its polar regions. These interactions have become increasingly important since it is apparent that the arctic troposphere plays an important role in environmental concerns with respect to global change. It is a unique chemical reactor influenced by human activity and the Arctic Ocean. In winter industrialized continents contribute gaseous and particulate pollution. It is underlain by the flat Arctic Ocean from which it is separated by a crack-ridden ice membrane 3-4 m thick. Ocean to atmosphere exchange of heat, water vapor and marine biogenic gases influence the composition of the reactor. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
There is ever increasing concern about both the ozone depletion in the stratosphere and the increase in the ozone concentration in the troposphere. As a consequence, there is growing interest in total ozone surface and satellite observations, surface UV measurements and the interpretation of results to assess potential impacts of UV radiation enhancement on man and the biosphere. The volume analyses problems of total ozone and UV-B variability. Further, it treats tropospheric ozone changes as well as the responsible factors, such as air pollution, chemical and photochemical reactions coupled with air transport. Some key problems of numerical modelling are also discussed. Another subject is the development of remote sensing techniques to retrieve minor optically active components of the atmosphere. ...
