The region's history includes many fascinating aspects, including some of the world's best fossil and dinosaur dig sites; Native American artifacts, including rare petroglyphs preserved in the Cave Hills; and the entire history of the region's homesteaders, from the frist settlers and cowboys through the dust bowl and World War II. The Pioneer Trails Regional Museum (PTRM) has a comprehensive paleontology department and is an active field museum. The museum is less than 30 miles (48km) from some of the world's best dinosaur and fossil bed. Throughout the summer, the PTRM's paleontologists lead field tours into the badlands where you can help them dig for dinosaurs and other fossils. Starting off in high school, there are some courses that would be mandatory to become a paleontologist. They would need to take all the science courses as possible. Biology is a must, and geology too. Experts also suggest mathematics, as it will help a lot. A foreign language would be good also, because some paleontologists travel wherever new discoveries are made. They may want to take courses in art too, because they do a LOT of sketching. When it comes time to choose a college, one should be chosen that has a good program in both biology and geology. Take basically the same courses as in high school, and inquire about a place where you could work as an undergraduate researcher. Also, don't forget to take paleontology courses! Decide which part of paleontology you want to specialize in, that will determine where you go. A masters degree is the minimum, with a PhD if they want to be an expert. After college or University, try to find a job in the paleontology department of a museum. It may be a couple of years in the lab, or they may be sent out right to a dig, if that is what they specialize in.
