Extractions: Panama has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. While there is little seasonal variation, the two main seasons are the dry season which runs from January through March and the rainy season from April through December. Although thunderstorms are common during the rainy season, the country is outside the hurricane track. The Panama Canal is a major focus of business activity and contributes about 5 percent to the nation's income. Owned and operated by the United States since 1914, the canal became the sole property of Panama in December 1999. A public Panamanian corporation operates the canal. U.S. military forces based around the canal departed, and many of the former military bases are likely be converted to business or public use.

Extractions: Advertisement Dateline: 07/12/99 (Rev. 10/11/99) On December 31, the United States will transfer the Panama Canal and the surrounding Panama Canal Area to the Panamanian government. The transition is expected to be an easy one as the U.S. finally abandons control of the a territory held since 1904. From 1819, Panama was part of the federation of Colombia but when Colombia rejected U.S. plans to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama, the U.S. supported a revolution that led to the independence of Panama in 1903. The new Panamanian government authorized French businessman Philippe Bunau-Varilla, to negotiate a treaty with the United States. The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty allowed the U.S. to build the Panama Canal and provided for perpetual control of a zone five-miles wide on either side of the canal. Though the French had attempted contruction of a canal in the 1880s, the Panama Canal was successfully built from 1904 to 1914. Once the canal was complete the U.S. held a swath of land running the 50 miles across the isthmus. The division of Panama into two by U.S. territory caused tension throughout the twentieth century. To the east is Colombia and to the west Costa Rica. Because of the location and contour of the country, directions expressed in terms of the compass are often surprising. For example, a transit of the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Caribbean involves travel not to the east but to the northwest, and in Panama City the sunrise is to the east over the Pacific. The country is divided into nine provinces, plus the Comarca de San Blas, which for statistical purposes is treated as part of Colón Province in most official documents. The provincial borders have not changed since they were determined at independence in 1903. The provinces are divided into districts, which in turn are subdivided into sections called corregimientos . Configurations of the corregimientos are changed periodically to accommodate population changes as revealed in the census reports.
