    Extractions: T he Panama Canal is located on the Isthmus of Panama in Central America. The canal is 80 kilometers (50 miles) long and serves as a passage for large ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In 1903, a treaty was signed by Panama and the United States that allowed the United States to undertake construction of an interoceanic ship canal across the Isthmus of Panama. The canal shortened the previous route, around Cape Horn at the tip of South America and through Drakes Passage, by 8,000 nautical miles. Construction took 10 years and involved feats of engineering that included the largest gates and canal locks ever built, and the largest Earth damn up to that time. Ancon was the first official ship to complete interoceanic passage through the Panama canal when it opened on August 15, 1914. I n this image , the canal can be seen running diagonally from top right to lower left. The Atlantic side is at upper right, Pacific at lower left. From the Atlantic, the canal is entered via the Caribbean Sea and exists into the Pacific via the Gulf of Panama. The city of Colon is on the Atlantic side of the canal, Panama (obscured by clouds) on the Pacific side. Larger Image (117k JPEG) T he canal consists of Gatun Lake (a central man-made lake that runs most of the distance across the Isthmus of Panama) and a 13 kilometer (8.5 miles) section known as Gaillard Cut. The Cut is located on the Continental Divide where primary excavation of the canal (carving through rock and shale) was required. Three series of huge locks are used to raise and lower ships, one on the Atlantic side and two on the Pacific side. The Miraflores locks (on the Pacific side) are the largest lock system in the world. A ship is raised 26 meters (85 feet) above sea level and then lowered again during its 8-10 hour passage through the canal.
