Some pacifists will sanction the use of personal violence in some circumstances, but in general it is absolute. The term was coined by Emile Arnaud at the 10th Universal Peace Conference in 1902. There is no God external to the Universe as we know it, and the Universe itself (matter and energy) represents Divinity. However, what a pantheist means by Divinity may be something entirely different than the usual 'God' Concept... For the Pantheist, 'God' is not a conscious, personal being as the theists think of him. Rather, the word Divinity rather is a metaphor of explaining our attitude of reverence, wonder, awe and love that we feel towards Life/Cosmos/Earth and because the Cosmos it it's own designer/creator and is self-organising and self-structuring. Does the Cosmos have feeling? No. But we as conscious human beings DO have feeling, and we can allow the beauty of Life enchant us and inspire us. So basically, Pantheism is a more spiritual, life-affirming approach to Life, compatible with Humanism, Paganism, Atheism and ecological concerns.

I find much of his work illuminating and valuable, yet I dislike his coinage "scientific pantheism" and I question the meaning of the term and its value in spreading pantheism to a wider audience. The label "scientific pantheism" highlights the religion's "scientific approach to reality" (Pantheist Vision, Vol. 17, No. 4). But to me the term brings to mind people who try to validate their less-than-scientific activities by employing "science" in their name , e.g. "scientology, "creation science" and "scientific creationism." Pantheism needs no adjective tacked on to bolster its credibility. Pantheism perforce embraces the scientific method and the religion's increasing prominence stems in part from its perfect compatibility with the latest findings of science. The tag "scientific pantheism" also implies a superiority over other types of (unscientific?) pantheism. But I think the many forms of pantheism and related spiritualities that instill a reverence for Nature have their place (the Earth and non-human inhabitants need all the help they can get). Condescension, intended or not, is counterproductive. On another level, putting "scientific" in front of pantheism does a disservice to pantheism. Why? Because science and its handmaiden modern technology wreak havoc on the planet. Nuclear bombs and radiation poisoning, to name but one of thousands of banes, lead thoughtful persons to argue that modern science has done more harm than good. Certainly science plays an important role in our lives. But I think pantheism preceded science and exceeds science. Aligning the religion too closely with the good, the bad, and the ugly of science tarnishes the brilliance of pantheism.

Essentially the religion stresses the importance of reality and the laws of nature and not some supernatural "beyond." There is no Creator, except it be the "big bang" or something of that sort. Deism is similar but suggests a Creator which exists but which doesn't interfere. If I'm not mistaken it also holds that certain truths are innate and must be discovered through rational means. I would like to add Atheistic Mysticism to this class of religions which emphasize natural reality. (enlightenment = recognition of "undifferentiated reality") As far as agnosticism is concerned, I'd like to add my two bits. Agnosticism is the only truly defensible argument, of course, ... but it does not seem as practical, or as beneficial as any of the other "Reality" Gods of pantheism or deism. Agnosticism is more of a stopping place for discussion ... whereas S. Pantheism and Deism add poetic expression to our scientific discoveries.

Lewis, former Imperator, quoted from the philosophy of a Dutch philosopher, Baruch (Benedict) Spinoza. In fact Frater Lewis has made several references to Spinoza in many of his writings. The great objection to pantheism is that, thiugh ostensibly it magnifies the Creator and gets rid of the difficult dualism of Creator and Creation, it tends practically to deny his existence in any practical intelligible sense.
