This weekend is the first full fledge weekend that the games are underway. Myself, a co-worker and two of his friends decided to meet at 8:30am at a train station. From there, we would take the train to the Olympic Park, and attend the games. The ticketing is different than the Olympics. The Paralympics sell "Day Passes" for $15 each. They allow you to enter the park for one day, and attend all events on a first come first seat available basis. Promo Material The Games will be held from 18 - 29 October, 17 days after the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games. There will be 4000 athletes from 125 countries competing at the event in the 18 sports on the competition program, 14 of which are also on the Olympic sports program. Unique to the Paralympic Games are boccia, goalball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby. A Paralympic sports festival atmosphere will be created at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, which is home to 14 of the 18 sports. Simultaneously, he began a 2.4mR class campaign to compete in the Paralympics. In the Soling campaign, up against America's Cup skipper Ed Baird and other sailing elite, Brown's crew finished among the top six boats at the Olympic Trials, and conceded the Olympic berth to Soling World Champion Jeff Madrigali. In the 2.4mR Trials, competition was just as furious between many long-time sailors. After a seven race series, Tom Brown won the regatta by a record nine points and headed for the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia where he took home the Bronze medal. Since 1952, the Paralympics have followed two weeks after the Olympics, and have included identical sports in identical venues. The difference; all of the atheletes have some sort of physical disability ranging from blindness to quadriplegia. The 2000 Paralympics involved over 4,000 athletes from 125 countries competing in 41 sports for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Tom Brown proudly represented the United States, returning with a Bronze medal inthe 2.4mR event. Having lost his left leg when he was 10 years old, Tom has been forced to make many adaptions and concessions during both sailing campaigns, but has never changed his goal of proving that he ranks among the best sailors in the world. The Paralympic Games are open only to those elite athletes who meet the rigid qualifying standards of their sport. The term "Paralympic" actually means "next to" or "parallel" to the regular Olympics, as the Paralympics provide elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional physical disability that precludes their involvement in open competition at the regular Olympics.

The Games brought together more than 4,000 athletes from 125 countries competing in 18 sports. Being chosen to represent your country is supposedly a great distinction, a huge accomplishment, but I didn't feel honored by what I had achieved until I saw how highly Australians esteemed the Paralympics. I live in the most powerful nation in the world, I'm proud to call myself an American, but sadly, I had to travel halfway around the world to feel like an elite athlete. Over the next ten days, this amazing response from the Australian public never waned. The streets were constantly filled with spectators. People waited in lines for two to three hours hoping to get in to see their favorite Australian athletes. The front page of the newspaper was filled with stories about the Paralympics. The television station broadcasting the games increased their nightly coverage by 30 minutes because the public was demanding more. In the last minute of our game against Australia, the sold out crowd started singing Waltzing Matilda. They were so loud that I could barely hear my teammates on the court. I had to struggle not to smile. Sure, I was upset that we were losing, but I was thrilled that so many people actually cared about the outcome of the game.
