They made contacts as far as the Tatar peoples and even reaching the court of Kublai Khan in China. His father's passion for integrating east and west was passed down to Marco. But one of the best things that ever happened to the famous BC explorer David Thompson was when a large log rolled from a sleigh and crushed his leg. All things really did work for the good through that tragedy (Romans 8:28). His broken leg gave him time to learn math, science, and instruments of surveying, how to keep field notes and journal-keeping. As a result, David Thompson learned the necessary skills which enabled him to put Western Canada on the map. The early 19th century Western Canada map was essentially blank until Thompson filled it in. Thompson was one of the master-builders of Canada and possibly the greatest geographer the world has known. As a land geographer, Thompson was the peer of Captain James Cook, the great sea geographer of the oceans. Thompson has been described as a great surveyor disguised as a fur trader, as a marvelous scientist with the sensitive soul of a prophet. By his own initiative and industry, he explored and surveyed more than a million and a half square kilometres of wilderness, accomplishing the staggering feat of mapping half a continent. Even Alexander Mackenzie, the renowned explorer, was quite astounded and remarked that Thompson had performed more in ten months than he expected could have been done in two years. Thompsons map, his greatest achievement, was so accurate that 100 years later it remained the basis for many of the maps issued by the Canadian government and the railway companies. We can even credit David Thompson with the exacting survey of much of the Canadian/US 49th Boundary.

Its story has spread just as widely as its relics. The ship was built in 1851 by Smith Shipbuilding of Saint John, New Brunswick. The vessel took its name from the Italian explorer, whose principal claim to greatness was the new trade routes he staked out between Europe and China. Appropriately enough, the ship that bore his name also won accolades for its Pacific voyages. After completing a round trip between England and Australia in a scant 11 months and 21 days, it won the undisputed title of the fastest ship afloat in the world. Banking on this recognition, its owners sold it to the Black Bell line, where it became one of the most famous passenger ships of its day. Enduring a regular battering from the seas, however, wooden ships could not stay fast or glamorous forever. As it aged, the Marco Polo followed a predictable fall from grace. It was refitted and used in the Australian immigrant trade. By 1880, it had been condemned and was purchased by a Norwegian company to export Canadian timber. While the Marco Polo may have been carrying fresh lumber, its own wooden hull had seen its better days. In 1883, the ship was heading back for England and, just off the coast of Prince Edward Island, its seams began to pour water. The crew began to jettison cargo, but in the process, had to saw in half some of the ship's supporting girders. The move backfired, as the gale force winds began loosening the ship's tired hull even more. Finally, in an effort to salvage at least their own lives, the captain and crew ran the ship aground at Cavendish beach.

So, I hope readers will understand that when I say that that Loose Cannons reconstruction of Marco Polo is literally breath taking, I do mean just that. Gasps and sharp intakes all-round. This is the release that reconstruction fans have been waiting for. There can surely be few stories whose absence from the archives is more keenly felt than "Marco Polo", a story which has gained near mythical status among the lost episodes of Doctor Who. Dating from the middle of the programmes first season, the first of John Lucarotti's three great historical stories (followed by "The Aztecs" and "The Massacre Of St Bartholomew's Eve"), judged on the quality of the script alone, is the programme's lost masterpiece. To that one can add a marvellous guest cast, boasting several actors who were big names on TV in 1964, technical staff on top form, lavish sets and costumes by wonderful designers, a brilliant director, and a regular cast who were reaching their peak on the show. The fact that this piece of classic television was junked is a tragedy, which borders on the criminal. Now, 38 years after Marco Polos one and only broadcast on UK television, viewers can again glimpse a little of what made this story special, thanks to the efforts of the Loose Cannon Team Derek Handley, Dean Rose and Rick Brindell.

I think you should issue a stamp in his honour and I've done some research from when he was born in 1254 to when he died in 1324. Marco Polo was even the first European explorer to cross the entire continent of Asia. The thing is, someone who's that courageous couldn't go without a stamp. He went to places like Turkmania and Zormaria and if he had a stamp more people would know about him. Marco Polo was a brave, courageous explorer who was on so many adventures, like in 1298 he was taken captive by Genose. He was on more adventures than a super hero. His father, Nicolo gave him some influence along the way. Marco married a girl named Danota and she had 3 daughters. Before he died he said," I did not tell have of what I saw because no one would have belived me." I think Marco Polo was the greatest European explorer in the world. I was no exception, a farm boy who had never ventured more than a hundred miles from home. But never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day I would follow the trail of this great explorer. My first steps on the trail blazed by Marco Polo came quite by accident. Shortly after World War II, when I was in the Marines, I was sent to a Chinese language school in Peking, known as Beijing today. Marco Polo was the subject of much of our discussions at the school. He had spent 17 years in Peking in the service of the great Mongol leader Kublai Khan, having arrived in 1275. Marco was only 17 years old when he set out from Venice with his father and uncle. It took them three and a half years to reach the Chinese capital. In Peking I devoured all the books on Marco Polo I could. His own work, written many years after his return, was essentially a travelogue solely his observations, without any abstract embellishments. Marco was not a literary man; rather, a merchant travelling with his father and uncle to open trade with China. What he wrote of was totally alien to Europe, and I often wonder how much he left out for fear he might be scorned and his tales taken to be fiction.
