Product Description
Read by the author

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic and anxiety attacks affect tens of millions of Americans. One of the first people who studied and wrote about anxiety and panic disorders was Dr. Claire Weekes.

Pass Through Panic gives the listener simple methods needed to pass through the web of fear, anxiety and panic that has imprisoned them. Weekes gives the sufferer hope that there is an end in sight to the cycle in which they are trapped. Her techniques of acceptance and surrender show that by passing through panic, rather than trying to stop it, you find yourself in a place of strength and optimism, rather than one of fear and frustration.

After listening to this audio, one will come away confident that Dr. Weekes truly understands the mind and feelings of the sufferer. This understanding lays the foundation for acceptance of the simple, four-step method that effectively deals with this disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best resource on the subject available...
The author has since passed away, and it's too bad... because I imagine there are endless scores of people that want to thank her for her books and tapes. There is SO much garbage out there on the subject, it'sdistressing. Not only that, but your average doctor doesn't have a clue when it comes to dealing with anxiety, outside of reaching into the cabinet for the latest drug samples the sales reps gave them.

This audio-book is for people who want to not just understand, but work on curing their problem. It's all about the approach... and in all the doctors I've visited, none ever made it so simple to understand. Probably because they really don't understand it themselves. Dr. Weekes herself says at one point in the book... "it's not the mystery that a nervously ill person thinks it is."Well, she's right. That doesn't mean it's easy to solve, but it really is simple. Once you realize that, you're half-way to a solution.

If you truly want to improve your situation and are ready to change your outlook and do a little work... this is an excellent resource. There aren't loads of lists to keep and charts to keep. It's just information to ingest and then put into play in your daily life. No BS.

Some people have a little problem with her "delivery." To that I say... get over it. She's from a different era and I actually find her delivery to be charming, if not even amusing at times.
It's a little stern, but you can hear the conviction in her voice. You can hear in her tone... that this is from experience. (As I recall, she was a sufferer herself at one point.)
Some of her terminology is a little dated, but the information she conveys is invaluable.

Every student going through med school should be made to listen to and understand this book, in my opinion... and if you're an anxiety sufferer, you must own this and give it a chance.
No magic pills, just the truth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from a "Bipole"
This is a fabulous resource. I've had depression, mania and anxiety (as well as panic attacks) for the past at least four years, and I've read A LOT of books that aim to help you understand your diagnosis, symptoms, and struggles, and many have been very helpful. This one takes the cake. While not all of the information was new to me, a lot of it was, and the format was perfect for truly helping me understand. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because I wish there were a newer edition that could update some of the information on medications.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
I was disappointed with this one.Everyone else liked it.I just thought it was very plain, and became bored with it quickly. If you suffer from anxiety check out "Embracing the Fear"...

4-0 out of 5 stars panic disorder
I used this book to educate patients on panic disorder. Although it is not new the information is still valuable and written by a very experienced Psychiatrist who gave insight to years of practice with non-pharmalogical tips as well as howpeople reacted to different meds. I really liked this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic Disorder, Agorophobia? Gotta Read this Book
This is a very helpful book in understaniding panic disorder with or without agorophobia. This book has been so helpful to me.Just reading it gave me so much hope.If you are suffering form this, you've don't want to miss this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars PanicDisorder Is Not Your Fault!!!!
I really felt comfort in this book! As a 27 year old female who has had panic attacks since the age of 5, this book is a godsend. Dr. Kernoodle is a Panic Disorder expert who knows what he is talking about. Finally a book that doesn't practically say it's all in our head, and we can control these horrible, debilitating attacks just by thinking different thoughts. His studies have concluded that it is not all in our head, but in our chemical makeup! It can be a disease just like heart disease. Just like a diabetic who needs insulin, Panic disorder can be treated with medications, and behavioral therapy. I like the fact that Dr. Kernoodle makes the sufferer feel it is not the anxiety victim's fault but a real medical problem, which is usually shamefully ignored by the medical profession, because it is a mental disorder. I wish Dr. Kernoodle lived in my area, so I could get the care I have been waiting for all my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic disorder explained--without the jargon
If you have panic disorder (or know someone who does), you must read this book! Without using complex medical jargon, Kernodle gives the most up-to-date explanation of the physiology of panic disorder. Drawing on numerous research studies, journal articles and his experiences in private practice, Kernodle explains current theories on the causes of panic disorder.

The most helpful aspect of Kernodle's book is the clear discussion of various treatments for this complex disorder. Each medication is carefully outlined, from recommended dosages to possible side effects. Kernodle also includes a variety of case studies from his own practice.

This book helped me understand a condition that has overwhelmed my life for many years. With the wealth of information I have learned just from this one book, I am confidently able to discuss my recovery plan with health professionals.

A patient's guide to panic disorder, panic attacks, and other stress-related maladies

Download Plain Text version

Twenty years ago panic disorder was often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Its symptoms frequently mimicked non-psychiatric diseases, making it a mystery to both doctors and patients. Sufferers filled emergency rooms and doctors' offices and endured countless general examinations that revealed nothing.

In Understanding Panic and Other Anxiety Disorders, Benjamin Root, a practicing psychiatrist since 1986, gathers the very latest research and news on the newest pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments for panic disorder and many other related afflictions, such as social phobia and generalized anxiety disorders.

Much of what Root brings to the book are new findings and tested therapeutic techniques. The symptoms of panic disorder were long underreported and doctors faced a diagnostic puzzle in working with the disease. The term "panic disorder" was not even in common discussion among psychiatrists until recently. Now a great number of medications have come to market to benefit those suffering from this debilitating condition.

Studies have revealed that panic disorder alone will affect up to 3.5 percent of the American population. This book is designed for people struggling to understand this highly prevalent disorder as well as other related syndromes.

Chapters cover the symptoms of panic disorder and related problems. Other chapters detail the behavior and effects of panic disorder and outline the latest treatments. The final chapters of the book explore the ongoing search for a more complete understanding and more consistent cures for anxiety syndromes. For both the afflicted and family members helping a patient recover and attain peace of mind, Understanding Panic and Other Anxiety Disorders provides a valuable sourcebook.

Benjamin Root is in private practice at Mississippi Neuropsychiatric Clinic in Ridgeland, Mississippi, and is a clinical assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and human behavior at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Medication Free Success of Anxiety, Panic, and Agoraphobia
For a Fairly small book it is "huge" with information, sincerity and punch. The author made this read easy, packed with the account of his affliction with "panic attacks, anxiety and agoraphobia".It's the first book Ive read that has made my battle with the same afflictions a doable goal "without medications".The purpose of the author's story is written with sincerity and the hope of helping other people to overcome obstacles of debillitating disorders. I liked it so much that I sent it to my sister who is also a sufferer (of many years).I used his suggested guides to recovery before I even finished the book.I have hope, thank you thank you, thank you!

3-0 out of 5 stars It was okay
The book was very easy to read. The thing is is what works for one person isn't a cure all for everyone else. If it helps some people great. But if your anxiety problems are really complex this book alone won't help or may not help at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Help
This book gives the reader a vivid description of the life-stealing realities of panic attacks and agoraphobia.Rafe doesn't stop there, though. He outlines his own journey to take back control over his life.Instead of turning to medication, he used simple, yet effective strategies to recover. As a counselor, I recognized many of the strategies that Rafe successfully used.I will definitely recommend this book to anyone I work with who is struggling with high anxiety, panic attacks or agoraphobia.

This book does a wonderful job of describing what it's like to go through a panic attack. It also gives many strategies for how to overcome them without using medication.I used a combination of medication and the suggestions from the book since my specific case was medically caused.I'm happy to say that I am now not using the meds and only using the strategies suggested!I also shared this book with my family members that didn't understand what I was going through. After reading the first section, they had a much clearer understanding of panic attacks and were much more sympathetic towards me!

Product Description
Living with Panic Disorder is a collection of poignant short stories written by panic disorder sufferers throughout the country. The pieces describe, often in shocking detail, the tormented lives of people living day to day with this condition. Panic disorder is a devastating but highly treatable condition that affects one out of every ten people. The illness is so pervasive that many people go through life in hiding, completely isolated for fear of shame and ridicule. The stories in this anthology will help normalize panic disorder to the masses and begin the process of dispelling the myth that only mentally unstable people suffer from this condition. My hope is that this book will also help the many who are still suffering alone to reach out and get treatment. Reading about one person’s experience would not be powerful enough. I needed an anthology of pained voices from all walks of life to relate gritty, descriptive accounts of their struggles in their own words. The following stories were written by courageous individuals whose lives were forever changed by the power of panic disorder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So you have Panic Disorder ....
... then this is the book for you.Reaching across every social, psychological and emotional strata imaginable, this collection of essays takes us into the hearts and homes of the 'typical' panic disorder sufferer - of which of course there are none. Each author tells his or her own story in his or her own words, touching such important aspects as when and why the disorder struck, how deeply it affected their lives, how they came to make the tough decisions (such as meds or no meds, therapy or no therapy) that let them reclaim their lives.

I especially enjoyed finding my own story in the most unlikely places, of finding, even after 9 years of relative anxiety-free living, the validation that yes, this WAS real, no, I was NOT making it up, and that the choices I made in my own healing were pertinent and right for me.

This is also a must-read for the partners of people with Panic Disorder. You know, a little 'light' read for those 2am visits to the ER.(Humor - a PD household 'must-have'.)Truthfully, this book will help everyone involved understand and be more fully present for their loved one as they navigate this insidious labyrinth known as Panic Disorder.

I only wish it had been written 10 years ago ....

Product Description
Panic is one of the most crippling psychological disorders of our time. It dominates a sufferer's thoughts, saps motivation, sidelines life purpose and derails their social life. Panic is a disorder of perception. Internal sensations such as difficulty breathing, a racing heart, dizziness, or feeling hot and sweaty are misread by those who panic as dangerous and life-threatening. Some believe they are about to collapse from a heart attack, brain tumour or stroke. Others fear insanity, that they will lose control of their mind or go mad. Physiologically, panic is a high adrenaline state. Once set in motion, the cascade of adrenaline molecules, known as fight or flight response, rises to a crescendo and slowly dissipates. But what has gone wrong when the very urgent fight or flight response takes off in the supposedly safe environments of the supermarket, cinema, one's home or even bed? What triggers the adrenaline cascade in such neutral settings? How can it be avoided in the future? When Panic Attacks answers such questions. It explains the psychology and physiology underlying panic. It makes sense of why a sufferer is radically altered after their first panic attack and how they come to inhabit a new world full of threats both from without and within. Aine Tubridy gives an understanding of the innermost thoughts of those who panic. She documents their deep sense of alienation from others, and how they feel split off from their body which they are unable to control. There is an indisputable link between high levels of adrenaline and panic - no adrenaline - no panic. Grounded in years of clinical experience and research, Dr Tubridy teaches the reader specific adrenaline lowering techniques which have been scientifically validated. She includes muscle relaxation exercises, thought management, changing avoidance behaviours, exercises targeting the chakra system, homeopathic remedies and psychotherapy. This book calls for a change in the way society looks at a subject which has been medicalised for too long, rather than seen as a personal dilemma within which lies a unique solution. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Robert Sterling I Made it Throught the Rain book
A genuine, honest look at panic disorder...if anyone you know suffers from this, it is an eye-opener, mostly written as a diary Sterling also includes tips on cognitive thinking which is half the battle.I am glad i purchased this book as i did not know there was one out there like this until i looked on Amazon!

1-0 out of 5 stars May be helpful to people without this disorder
Though this book appears to be true and sincere, it does little to address the issue of how the author actually "Made it through the Rain". I personally suffer from Panic attacks and Agoraphobia and I was hoping for advice of how to overcome my own anxiety disorders, This was not the case. While I could relate to much how the author describes this illness, it provides little insight into how to confront this disorder. This story may be helpful to provide information to people who do not have this affliction, but I found it to be of little use as a sufferer of this illness.
While I sympathize with Mr. Sterling, I personally believe that sympathy does not solve this illness. Understanding it more important than feeling sorry for yourself and asking for the pity of others. I've have also lost much to Panic Disorder... If you do not understand panic disorder, buy it. If you have Panic disorder, it only provides more dark emotions and a cycle of failures.

1-0 out of 5 stars A reader with Agoraphobia isn't blind
I shared his book with two other individuals who know I suffer from agoraphobia and panic disorder before I read it myself. Their feedback was stating nothing more than this is another try to get rich quick through book writing, once again, to impress his family.
I have now finished the book and while I could relate to many of the inner feelings, the book offers nothing but self pity for the author. I bought this book hoping to make it "through the rain" myself. I read it and found the book severely lacking in any type sugestions other than strong-arming others into feeling sorry for you. If your depressed and want plently of excuses for people to feel sorry for you, this is your book.

If your looking for a positive approach to deal with Agoraphobia, this book is a waste of your money. This same disorder has cost me much myself, including the purchase price of this book...

3-0 out of 5 stars From someone still "in the rain"
It isn't necessary to understand or agree with everything in "I Made It Through The Rain" to gain new wisdom and hope from reading its story, and from the honesty and courage of its author. This is not "the true story of Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia", it's the truth about one man's journey within the disorder, and within himself. His truth, because it is told in its raw reality, brings out the truth in the reader, and leads to hope, and toward one's own path "through the rain".I took only one break during the reading of this book, to attend a chat group for agoraphobia. The story holds the reader's interest beautifully, and Robert Sterling inspires almost despite himself. (Only the editing could have been improved, so I give it 3 stars. Content is 5 stars.) ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years, panic disorder has become one of the most researched syndromes in psychopathology. It has also been a topic of intense controversy, with sharp disagreements along disciplinary lines among biological psychiatrists, behavioral psychologists, and epidemiologists concerning its syndromal validity, epidemiology, etiology, and treatment.Filling the need for a balanced, in-depth analysis of the most current research and theory on all aspects of the syndrome, this unique volume provides a comprehensive, integrative exploration of panic disorder.

Maintaining throughout that panic disorder is a psychobiological syndrome characterized by dysfunction at the cognitive as well as the physiological level, the book begins with a discussion of the phenomenology of the disorder that covers:
* Origins of the panic disorder concept
* The evolution of panic disorder in DSM-III, DSM-III-R, and
DSM-IV
* Qualitative distinctions between panic, anxiety, and fear
* Alternative subtyping schemes
* Variants of panic
* Direct assessment

Extensive reviews of the epidemiology, biological aspects, and psychopharmacologic treatments are presented in subsequent chapters, followed by detailed explorations of psychological aspects, including predictability and controllability, and psychological treatments, including cognitive-behavioral techniques. A thorough discussion of the syndromal validity and etiology of the disorder is provided, and metatheoretical issues such as the cross-cultural and philosophical aspects of the disorder are also addressed. The final chapter presents conclusions about the current knowledge of panic, and looks toward future developments.

An important resource for all psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health professionals, and researchers interested in panic disorder, this book will also be a valuable text for psychiatry residents, medical students, and graduate students in clinical and counseling psychology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is power
I have to admit that I haven't even finished the book yet, but I fell compelled to write anyway.I am on page 43 of 159 (not counting glossary, appendix and index) but I have already had an epiphany, of sorts. Part, andmaybe most, of what is so distressing about panic disorder is notunderstanding it.We know it's happening, but we don't know why or how. Wefeel alone, isolated, hopeless, even crazy, and very, very afraid. Everyonehas heard the saying "we fear that which we do not understand". In the case of panic disorder this, I'm sure, is half the problem. Thisbook is not a warm-fuzzy book.It is not overloaded with case histories(though there are some). What it is is a very clear explanation of whatpanic disorder is and the myriad factors that come into play. I firmlybelieve that one of the best things a person with the disorder can do asself-help is to become educated about it. This book is an EXCELLENT placeto start. What a relief to know that I'm not crazy, and there may, in fact,be a perfectly legitimate explanation for why I'm predisposed to this. Thisbook won't fix your problems. But, it will give you a starting point onyour road to remission, and maybe even complete recovery. What have you gotto lose? ... Read more
