From the author: In this study an attempt was made to establish a connection between past psychotraumatic experiences and psi abilities, especially precognition. The theoretical concept underlying this hypothesis is the postulate of a personal sensitization factor (PSF). The PSF can be defined as an intrapsychic precipitate of shocking life events and/or childhood hardship that has sensitized the individual for so-called congruent life events (CLEs), that is, events which possess a certain similarity, concrete or symbolical, to the original trauma. This concept helps to explain why sometimes, following a minor distressing or even trivial event, such as moving to another place or the birthday of one's child, a depressive illness or a psychotic reaction may break out. Under certain circumstances also an event remote in space-time, such as the contemporaneous or future death of a beloved one or any other meaningful event, may fulfill the role of a CLE, giving rise to such anomalous phenomena as crisis-telepathy or precognition. Twelve subjects were asked to guess the top-down sequence of symbols in an open deck of 100 Zener cards. These "cards" were represented by 100 random numbers from 1 through 5, which had been generated by a pseudo-random number generator (RNG) some days before. In total there were four of such runs of 100 trials. For each run a different list of random numbers was used. After having completed the second run, the subjects were invited to an adjacent room in which 12 Thematical Apperception Test (TAT) or TAT-like pictures were spread out. The subjects then were requested to write down in a questionnaire which pairs of pictures they found either "shocking or disgusting," "comforting," "trivial," or "arousing mixed feelings." This procedure left out four pictures that were not mentioned at all. Subjects were also asked to answer questions about traumatic experiences in their own life (personal trauma) as well as in the lives of their parents (possible transgenerational trauma). The 12 pictures had been allotted to 12 different locations within the deck of 100 targets by the same pseudo-RNG. These locations remained the same throughout the four runs. Units of measurement were: (a) the trauma scores that had been given to each subject by the experimenter based upon the answers in the questionnaire, and (b) the number of both direct and displaced hits on Zener cards connected with--that is, located at the position of--a picture, expressed as a proportion of the total number of hits or displacements. Pearson correlations between trauma scores and the percentage of both forward and backward displacements were significantly positive (p < .01). A very significant positive correlation (p < .001) could be observed in the second run, that is, just prior to the exposure to the targets, between the overall trauma score and the percentage of forward displacements. For the more traumatized subjects, pictures that had been mentioned by them attracted significantly more displacements than pictures which had not. An experimenter effect, as an alternative explanation of the findings, cannot as yet be ruled out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Letter to the editor
I would like to thank Dean Radin for reviewing my new book, Parapsychology and the Skeptics. However, I was surprised by this comment near the end of the review:

"...a nearly identical book could have been written a hundred years ago by Myers or James. What is new today is not merely much more evidence than was available a century ago, but new levels of technical and analytical sophistication that have kept pace with developments in mainstream disciplines."

One hundred years ago we did not have quantum mechanics or Popper's falsification principle, two products of 20th century science and philosophy that are central to the major themes of my book.Yes, today we have not only much more evidence, but also "new levels of technical and analytical sophistication."

But a central theme of my book is that this debate is not primarily about evidence, but about the interpretation of evidence; it is about frameworks of understanding; or to be precise, about scientific and philosophic assumptions that cannot accommodate the reality of psi phenomena. One hundred years ago classical physics was widely assumed - with certainty - to be correct and complete. The dogmatism of the current skeptics is, in part, a legacy of this outmoded science, whose underlying assumptions are contradicted by the existence of psi. It is also a product of the all-too-human desire for certainty and finality, which as Popper has shown, is logically out of place within the scientific enterprise.

From the author: One way by which psi might manifest itself is by influencing ongoing cognitive processes. Word association has previously been suggested as a possible vehicle for psi. Two experiments are described which look at the influence of psi on interpretation of homophones (words which are acoustically identical, but can have different meanings). In Experiment 1, no overall psi was evident, although results indicate a potential "experimenter effect" and an apparent "respouse-bias" effect, in which less-favoured responses tend to elicit more psi-hitting. A potential "stacking-effect" artefact is also considered. Experiment 2 was a replication and extension of Experiment 1, with "true" randomisation techniques. No psi-effects were found, although a marginally significant gender effect was observed. Results are discussed along with potential implications of this approach.

From the author: Pharmaceutical research provides a useful model for doing convincing research in situations with intense, critical scrutiny of studies. The protocol for a "pivotal" study that is used for decision-making is reviewed by the FDA before the study is begun. The protocol is expected to include a power analysis demonstrating that the study has at least a .8 probability of obtaining significant results with the anticipated effect size, and to specify the statistical analysis that will determine the success of the experiment, including correction for multiple analyses. FDA inspectors often perform audits of the sites where data are collected and/or processed to verify the raw data and experimental procedures. If parapsychological experiments are to provide convincing evidence, power analyses should be done at the planning stage. A committee of experienced parapsychologists, moderate skeptics, and a statistician could review and comment on protocols for proposed "pivotal" studies in an effort to address methodological issues before rather than after the data are collected. The evidence that increasing sample size does not increase the probability of significant results in psi research may prevent the application of these methods and raises questions about the experimental a roach for psi research.
