Product Description
In this book, child and family therapist Patty Cogen, M.A., Ed.D. guides parents in promoting an internationally adopted child's social and emotional adjustment, explaining how to help a child adopted between the ages of six months and five years bond with his or her new parents, become a part of the family, and develop a positive self-image that incorporates both American identity and ethnic origins. Other topics include how (and why) to tell the child's story from the child's point of view; how to handle sleep problems and resistance to household rules; and how to encourage eye contact, ease transitions and separations, and deal with problematic anniversaries (birthdays, adoption day, Mother's Day). With advice on language and school difficulties and the development of self-control and independence, Cogen guides adoptive parents from the initial meeting through their child's teen years. It's an indispensable resource, not only for parents, but also for therapists and educators who work with adopted children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hands Down the Best Book You Will Read on Adoption
We are 6 months home with our daughter that we adopted internationally.I was given this book as a gift during our wait to meet our daughter.During our adoption preparation, I had the opportunity to read many books on adoption and attachment, but this is HANDS DOWN THE BEST ONE I READ.Patty uses pratical examples to give a picture of what attachment issues look like to a parent. She also gives practical advice to address many of the issues we would face.We highlighted and tagged pages while we were waiting and it was so reassurring to know that we knew what to look for and how to respond when we saw these issues.

In the first few hours and days with our daughter, I referred back to the book many times and it gave me tools to get our first smile and our first snuggle. There is a touching the face game she suggests that worked on my daughter and the game was the first time she allowed Daddy to touch her!Amazing!!Our daughter still loves to play so many of the games today.

This book is such a good mix of psychology and practical application that it is still with us 6 months home.We used it as the book title says, from the first few moments we met her and continue to refer to it as new challenges arise.I can see this book is something I will keep for many years.I am so grateful to Patty for writing this book.I truly believe that it helped us be the most prepared we could be.I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone. It is great as just a general parenting book as well - such insight into our children's brains.Priceless!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Adoptive Parents
We adopted our child seven years ago and just recently bought this book. How I wish we would have had it six years ago! This book should be required reading for any parent of an internationally adopted child. It will help you understand your child's behavior, feelings and needs. It is well written and the information is well organized. So even if your child has been home with you for several years - I recommend you purchase and read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting ...all children
We have two daughters, ages 12 and 8, who have been home with us for just over 20 months.Prior to the adoption, we took some training to meet Hague requirements. After that we went on reading and learning because we wanted to have a broad understanding of the issues we might encounter and approaches that might be useful.I estimate that we have 20 well-worn books on our adoption bookshelf. All are excellent, but this one is the best.

Although the author clearly has therapeutic preferences, she isn't trying to convince us that she is RIGHT.She offers quite practical ideas to help parents to see concrete ways of building trust and attachment, for example, and for understanding our children's difficult behaviors.

I think this book should remove 'Internationally Adopted' from its title:it would benefit all parents!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift to Adoptive Parents and Adoption Professionals
In eight years of raising an adopted daughter, we have read numerous books on the subject.None have been quite as helpful as Patty Cogen's Parenting Your Internationally Adopted Child. Why?More than other resources, Cogen's book effectively pairs learned insights with immediately implementable strategies.Cogen's choice to profile the challenges and successes of five distinct adoptive families, weaving their examples throughout, adds to the book's readability.Readers learn that "a proactive approach, in which you are knowledgeable about your child's needs and are able to anticipate problems before they occur, keeps you ahead of, rather than behind, your child."For a parent, there is nothing more empowering than learning how to actively foster the positive emotional development of your child. And, if you have a blended family, like ours (with birthed and adopted children), Cogen's insights will sharpen your senses in a way that benefits the entire family.Whether a person preparing for the journey of adoption or a parent in search of answers, this book is an invaluable resource. It will surely find itself on the required reading list of enlightened adoption agencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of it's kind that I have come across
This is a wonderfully written and comprehensive book about adoption and parenting. I have been reading tons about adoption, parenting and how children learn, and this is the one book that summarizes everything thoroughly and straight to the point. Much of the content is backed up by scientific and psychological research. It is a must read for any parent adopting a child from overseas. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book
The power if Positive Parenting it's a great book. Very very useful. I raccomend the reading to every parent. But this book can be useful for twachers, trainers, and everyone who works in contant with other people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
we have read this book and found it most useful. It covers several real situations and its principles can be applies to a variety of different cases with ease. It is not easy to switch overnight to constant praise if one is not used to it but with practice, anyone can learn and achieve great results. We have taken notes and developed a little chart too. It contains all the principles in concentrated form. :) I hope you find it useful!

This is for everyone:

RULES OF THE HOUSE

1) When we behave properly we are able to remain in the same room with the others.
2) When we tell all the truth we make our family happy.
3) When we obey we earn privileges.
4) When we are good or play nicely we get the attention we want.
5) When we stay calm in difficult situations we show that we are in control and earn privileges.
6) When we take good care of our bodies, clothes, belongings and rooms, we can enjoy our belongings and earn privileges.
7) Our parents are the ones who decide which privileges we earn: use of toys, stickers, hugs, kisses, food, etc.

and this is for the parents:

PARENTS' CHART
1) We are teachers of good behaviour, not punishers of bad behaviour.
2) We reinforce good behaviour by paying attention to it and rewarding it.
3) We weaken bad behaviour by ignoring when it's a small thing, and by taking away privileges/using time out and re-directing it to more positive behaviours.
4) We don't pay attention to any behaviour that we don't like to be repeated.
5) We take action only if it's going to make things better.
6) We explain clearly our expectations and which privileges are earned or lost through obedience or lack of it.
7) We do not get sucked in any discussion about what's fair, or who's fault it is. We let the children cool down somewhere, say we are sorry if they are upset and leave it at that.
8) We don't ask children why they are doing something that is wrong; we just re-direct that behaviour to a praiseworthy one.
9) We do not get angry; we stay calm and in control; we let the natural consequences do the teaching.
10) If the kids misbehave/whine/are in pre-temper tantrum stage, we put them in time out and only say: "When you behave like this you may not be with us."
11) We appreciate honesty and do not jump at anyone for revealing an unpleasant truth.
12) We use positive expressions and put the responsibility for kids' behaviour squarely on their shoulder. i.e. "You have not earned the right to do this. You deny yourself the privilege to..."

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Parenting Advice from a Book
The book is full of practical, realistic advice and based on a keen understanding of human nature, and specifically the mind of a child. It is an enjoyable, as well as informative read. It has a pro-religion/pro-Christianity slant that sneaks up every once-in-a-while, but it doesn't get in the way of the science behind the advice. If that perspective offends you, it's easily ignored, as it's not a frequent occurrence or an overwhelming characteristic of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Parents and Children
The skills taught in this book will not only be a life saver for you and your children but the skills can be applied anywhere to anybody and anything that can learn. Becoming fluent in the skills of positive reinforcement will make your life unbelievably better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best $20 IEVER Spent!!!
I first read this book in 1998, and then bought my own copies, some to share.I still give them as gifts. Some ignore the book but some come back later, very impressed. Glenn Latham really walks you through the steps and logic of why and how.He makes it work for you if you will just follow his very clear and easy directions. Once you try it and are convinced, you will shake your head that you ever spanked a child previous to this.Once you know what works MUCH better, you realize that spanking and other poor parenting techniques only sabatoge yourself and your children. You will have no desire to return to noneffective parenting once you see it working.I only wish I'd bought it sooner, but very glad I bought it when I did. ... Product Description

A lifesaving handbook for parents of children who are occasionally, or too often, “out of control” Includes a bound-in twenty-minute DVD featuring Dr. Kazdin and his staff illustrating key concepts of the Kazdin Method Most child-behavior books are filled with advice that sounds reasonable, fits with what parents already believe about child-rearing, and is—as Dr. Kazdin proves— guaranteed to fail. The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child makes available to parents for the first time Dr. Kazdin’s proven program—one backed up by some of the most long-term and respected research devoted to any therapy for children.
Kazdin shatters decades’ worth of accumulated myths about tantrums, time-outs, punishments fitting the crime, and much more. With the practicality of Ferber and the warmth of Brazelton, Kazdin leads parents through every step of the Kazdin Method in action—how to use tone of voice, when and how to touch, how to lead your child in a “practice” session, how to adjust your approach for different-age children, how to involve siblings, and more. The program is temporary, but the results are permanent—for very young children, adolescents, and even beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
Helpful - he nails the problem from the first page to the last.AND even better, has specific solutions.Don't let your gut instincts trip you up from following his advice - your 'instinct' may be wrong in dealing with a defiant child - mine was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, This Is What I Have Been Looking For...
This is an excellent book that offers details about how to shape the behavior of your child without using threats, violence, shaming, punishment or any other barbaric methods.

I am SO thankful that I found this book about using positive reinforcement for children. I think I might buy more copies of this book and offer it as a gift to other parents.

This book is for ALL parents, not just the parents of defiant children.

This is the first Amazon.com review I have written. I just had to write a review for this book (and I read many books from Amazon.com) because I am convinced that by using the methods in this book I will not screw-up my child with half-baked (read religiously inspired "spare the rod, spoil the child") ideas about discipline and punishment. Also, and most importantly, I now have confidence that my relationship with my daughter will remain secure and positive for years and years, now that I can deal positively and effectively with her misbehavior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Research based prescription for success!!!!
What I love about this book is that the recommendations are not based on some "theory " of parenting but based on a scientific study of what works. Its not about blame or talent its just nuts and bolts of proven techniques to help a child (and parent) trade stubborn opposition for becoming a team!I think any parent would benefit by knowing the contents of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan Kazdin's book, The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child, is a must read for any parent
Alan Kazdin's book, The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child, is a must read for any parent whether or not that parent has a difficult child. In this book, Dr. Kazdin lays out the basic principles of reinforcement and punishment and shows how reward/sticker charts can be used to modify almost any child's undesirable behavior. These techniques can be quite powerful. Additionally, as parents we control many of the "rewards" in our child's life, including the most important reward of all, our attention. If we are ignorant of the principles of reinforcement, we often end up rewarding our children for behaviors that we consider undesirable. Kazdin's book is a favorite of mine and is an indispensable resource for all parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars This method works!
This book was easy to read and the method easy to use. This book is not just for "defiant" kids but also works for uncooperative ones. It turned around my parenting and my six year old went from frustrated, angry, and resentful to happy, loving, and eager to please in a matter of days. The more willing my boys were, the more relaxed and loving I also became. I am a true believer - convinced by the author's thirty years of clinical experience - and by my own person experience. If you are having trouble with your kids and feeling like you somehow got to a place where you never wanted to be as a parent, buy this book! You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Strong-Willed Children
I think perhaps some parents understanding of strong-willed and the author's might be different. Anyone who has a truly strong-will child might find this book LESS than useful. It is program that would probably work with a very mildly strong-willed child and like the other reviewer said, it is probably good for EVERY child (who is not strong-willed). A chair in the hallway for a time-out spot is NOT feasible for seriously strong-willed kids. Nor is sending them to your bedroom. Strong-willed kids don't stay in chairs in the hallway and they rip apart rooms they are sent to for time-outs (often while you are holding the door closed b/c there is no chance they will stay in there on their own). If this was not promoted for strong-willed kids, I would say it is a good plan. It might also work if you start really early with your child. We have been using Magic 1-2-3 for a long time with our child and have pretty good results. We still have explosive episodes more than I would like and this book didn't offer me anything new or special for my strong-willed little girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is good for EVERY child
I'd been having some problems with my mostly well-behaved 4 year old daughter, and I felt as if things were suddenly getting out of my control. I tried time-outs, I tried all sorts of things. Sometimes they worked, but I still felt that our relationship was not as fun and close as it had been, and I worried that she was starting to be too sassy and rude (typical 4 year old behavior, really). After a bit of research I bought this book. And I have to tell you, it has worked wonders. Once I read the opening chapter, I realized that my daughter is far from what they describe as "strong willed." I worried at first that this would mean the book wasn't for us. But no need to worry - this way of dealing with a young child seems to work with any kid. And *almost* immediately! My husband was out of town during the first week, and he came back and was very impressed. He went away again a few weeks later, and came back to me raving about how much I love this book and how much I needed him to read at least a few chapters of it. And he admitted that the difference in her behavior was impressive. Now, I don't want anyone thinking I have a perfect daughter (she's wonderful, smart and funny, but she still has her moments) but the difference this book has made is well worth the price. And I enjoy being around her a heck of a lot more than I had been, and I think she feels the same way. If you're having issues, feeling like nothing is working, give this a shot. The chapters on rewarding and ignoring were the most important for us, but again, I don't think she was especially strong willed so YMMV. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
I'm only about 1/2 way through, but so far, this book has been a valuable resource for me in learning how to deal with my daughter who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. The book is easy to read and I would recommend it for any parent who is struggling with raising a child with ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST EFFECTIVE ADHD TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY TO DATE!!!
There is a reason that the A.P.A. sought the publication of this book.It is cutting-edge, thought-provoking, and at times, counter-intuitive, but will deliver unprecedented results for any open-minded reader. It is a very different but highly proven model for ADHD which, unfortunately, is still new to many professionals. The plain truth is that this book represents the most effective ADHD treatment philosophy to date, just as the A.P.A.'s response, and the author's national and international awards suggest.

A MUST-READ for any parent or teacher of an ADHD child. The text book by the same author is a MUST-READ for any mental-health professional.

This book will change the way your home sounds every night. You will wear out every page, as many grateful parents have before you.It is the parent's "play book" that will bring the grades up and restore the peace!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent information for parents and school professionals
This book is easy to read and provides excellent up to date information for parents and/or school professionals who work with students who are diagnosed with ADHD. This book is a great reference for development of behavior programs both at home and at school to use as part of a treatment plan. The book addresses the importance of diet.It can be especially helpful to parents in understanding medication options and getting the help that their child is eligible for and needs in school. As a practicing school psychologist, I highly recommend it.

This book has helped me understand more and feel more comfortable in the treatment course we have taken. We have changed our kids diet and are implementing some stratagies already. 5-0 out of 5 stars Real world applications!
I just received this book and couldn't wait to start reading it. It is a wonderful reference and it's a great way to get you thinking about how to talk to your children. There are many times when I know what I want to say about a subject but, I am just not sure how to explain it to my children, this is the perfect solution. I love that the author encourages you to break out your own Bible and keep looking for more references on the topic. I also like that if you are in a hurry there is more than one verse right there for you and you can pick one that is relevant to your family or situation in particular. I think this just may be my new gift for baby showers, it's exactly what I wish I had had from the beginning!

5-0 out of 5 stars Your own parenting-specific concordance
This book is kind of like a parenting-specific concordance. It is organized by topic with verses that correspond to each, as well as discussion points, action points, and related topics. We use it for family devotions as well as for answering questions and correcting sinful behavior. While there's no replacement for living a Bible-saturated life and digging into the Bible on your own, this is a handy resource to complement that. Topics include: anger, apathy, appreciation, attitude, beauty, bragging, change, character, charity, cheerfulness, choices, comfort, commitment, compassion, competition, complaining, compromise, conceitedness, confidence, conformity, contentment, cooperation, courage, crafty (which I think would be better renamed "shrewdness"), criticism, cursing...and that's just A-C!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource, even for young ones.
We've used this book a few times already with our oldest (currently 5ys) and it seems to be pretty straight-forward. An easy-to-search topical index of certain scriptures. I found a few scripture references to be a bit of a stretch, but that's when it's important to pull out the Bible and actually go through the Word together with the child, I guess. As my children grow older this will prove to be more useful I'm sure. Def. a handy resource that will stay with us as we guide our children to the Lord.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource!
This book has been a valuable resource in raising my children to the glory of God!I am on my second copy!Scriptures are arranged by topics A-Z along with some practical application that can be used with the child. The topical guide makes it SO easy to find those scriptures that I know in my head but typically don't know enough word for word to find them in the Bible. This is a MUST have for Christ centered homes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Go-To Resource
This book sits in the Family Room - the heart of the home. It is so simple to grab and find whatever fits the moment. It could be a simple teaching moment (child not sharing, angry words, etc.) or it could be a family study time with discussion & prayer. SO awesome. I love this book - and now that I'm in the habit of grabbing it in moments of need, it gives ME time to cool down if necessary. ALSO great for encouragement when a child does well in something, not just to correct them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars STEP - Parenting Guide
Excellent book.So is the STEP for teens. It is my bible. My girls are now 20 and 18 and I still use this book as a guide. Our community center has taught this course for many years. Can't say enough about it. Works on children and adults.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disapointing
My daughter's doctor recommended this book when I asked about discipline of a toddler.I thought it was all pretty "duh" information. Then again I am a elementary school teacher so I've had a lot of training in behavior modification.I was disapointed it didn't spend more time discussing time out and discipline techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful parenting guide for new parents
Parenting Young Children by Dinkmeyer and McKay. I have used this book for years for teaching parenting classes to young parents who have trouble setting limits on their children, to stop yelling, repeating themselves, and how to start listening and understanding behavior. I now give it to new parents for their first born.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
The basic point seemed to be that if you pay attention and listen to your child all will go smoothly. This seems like a no brainer.Would you be buying the book if you weren't paying attention? The suggestions for discipline, although practical, were very basic. For example, have faith in your child, notice effort, listen for feelings, teach them to cooperate. Most parents already know these things. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Parenting Book
Connection Parenting: Parenting Through Connection Instead of Coercion, Through Love Instead of Fear, 2nd Edition

Read this book!! Personally speaking, I believe the information in this book could change the world as we know it. If more children felt the love of their parents, there would be less trouble in the world. (Just my opinion!) This book answers questions your mother might not have. It's a great resource for new mothers-to-be and everyone else, I think!

5-0 out of 5 stars OMG, what a great book!!!
I have read many parenting and discipline books in the last couple of months to try to figure out what was the problem with my 7 year old daughter, who behaves perfectly at school but is difficult at home. This book was by far the best. After implementing Pam Leo's suggestions the relationship between my daughter and me improved dramatically! It was unbelievable. My daughter and I were totally disconnected and I could foresee only more trouble ahead as she got older until I read this book. Now, instead of fighting with me and being troublesome, my girl is telling me she loves me several times a day. I thank the person who lent me her copy. I will be buying a copy myself to keep on my bookshelf to refer to if I ever slip back into disconnecting behaviors. Thank you, Pam Leo!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book for Conscious Parenting!
I read this book when I was pregnant and was sooo inspired by its positive message that I wanted to seek for a workshop close to where I live in Los Angeles.I couldn't find one so I emailed the author to see if they would have any coming to my area soon.I ended up having an amazing talk with Carmine Leo (Pam's workshop partner) who gave me the inspiration and tips to create my own workshop.

A few months after our son was born, I did end up creating my own workshop and it was a very beautiful forum for us to grow and learn about the Connection Parenting concept.I just knew there was another way to positively connect with our children without having to use coercion, bribes or the old patterns of fear-based thinking (of how we were brought up as kids)....

Thank you Pam for such a loving tool! This book has definitely transformed the way my husband and I are as new parents.

The workshop I actually created is now a positive and loving group that still gets together to support and discuss/share other positive, eco-friendly, natural, holistic topics.

Thank you Carmine for giving me the inspiration to do so...

So if there is anyone considering getting this book, I highly, highly recommend it!The best part is it gives you exercises at the end of each chapter to do by yourself or with a group. What I also love about this book is the plethora of resources (of other positive books, websites, etc.) given throughout the book and at the end of the book!

I am eternally grateful for this book and utilize its tools every day with our son...A great point that one of the father's from our group said is "It should just be called 'Connection' because it's not only a great tool for parents but for how we connect with anyone and everyone!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Advice I Have Found
I am a mom of two energetic, strong-willed boys.I have read many parenting books, blogs and articles in search of solutions to the problem of how to "discipline" them without losing my temper and my sanity and without being a marshmallow parent.I love this book.A key phrase it contains is, "bad behavior is an expression of an unmet need."Ms. Leo explains to us that when kids "misbehave," they have actually gone beyond the breaking point and are asking for help with a desperate measure--because at age 3, 4, 5 or what have you they do not know how to articulate what is happening with them. We, as parents, need to decipher the behavior. Is it hunger?Rest? Are her or his feelings hurt from something that happened earlier in the day that was not resolved? This does not mean that the undesirable behavior is okay, and that we let it slide. It means that we find out what is going on through communication and get the kid back on track with communication and love and appropriate, calm, respectful treatment. As parents, we tend to tune into the cries and signals of newborns; however, as children get older we tend to focus on "discipline":time outs, loss of privileges, reprimands and recriminations more often than not doled out in a loud, authoritarian voice. After all, we're supposed to be in charge, right? Pam Leo shows us how to treat children with respect. To listen to them, and to gently set limits in an appropriate manner.Again, I love this book.I highly recommend it to parents of all children, particularly parents of young children going through the particularly difficult 2 to 5 stage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soft, Positive, Powerful and Caring Parenting Support!
Pam Leo's book on Connection Parenting makes you feel good just from reading it. Her approach is clearly laid out, gentle, kind, logical and very helpful, urging parents and child care people to first connect with children, and then "work with" them.As a person who spent a lot of time on my grandparent's farm, where children were included in everything, taught as the day progressed, and learned to be adults by modeling on the integrity and caring of the adults they spent HOURS of time with, I appreciate Leo's concern for the isolation of children, and her calling parents back to spending time connecting with children, restoring children's ability and willingness to cooperate.Every parent should have this book as required reading.Violence and behavior problems in schools and in our culture would be cut in half, overnight!(I offer this review as a Marriage Counselor with 37 years of experience, a parent educator, and author of books that offer parents help with teaching their children how to deal with the emotions of anger, hurt, grief, guilt, love, intimacy, shame and remorse, loneliness, jealousy and fear. This is a GOOD book!)

Product Description
"Daddy, I'd like you to meet my children."

That's Robbie Castleman's attitude about taking her children to church. Sunday morning isn't a success if we have only managed to keep the kids quiet. There's more to church for kids than trying out their new coloring books. Children are at church for the same reason as Mom and Dad: for the privilege of worshiping God.

Because we are created to praise God both now and forever, we must take our children's worship seriously. Worship, Robbie writes, is "the most important thing you can ever train your child to do." With infectious passion, nitty-gritty advice and a touch of humor, she shows us how we can help our children (from toddlers to teenagers) enter into worship.

This expanded edition includes two new appendixes on the important issues of hyperactive children in worship and children's church for seekers. It also provides a study guide for personal reflection or group discussion. More than ever, Parenting in the Pew is essential reading for parents and worship leaders who want to help children make joyful noises to the Lord.

"Robbie Castleman does wonders in this book! Her biblically grounded theology and experientially tested practical ideas give us wonderful suggestions that deepen our own participation in worship, even while we help children truly worship instead of merely keeping quiet. This book is essential-for pastors, Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, parents and every other member of the congregation (since we all are responsible for forming the church's offspring). The Christian community could be changed by this book; read it avidly and give it to everyone you know." Marva J. Dawn, author of Is It a Lost Cause? 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for parents and leaders
Robbie Castleman is right on in giving attention to the need for churches to include children in worship. She addresses the challenges that children present but always reminds the reader that the investment of time is worth the cost. The book is especially helpful to parents as it presents practical suggestions for making the sabbath a special day.I recommend this book to all those who are parenting in the pew!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that I hope transforms my church.
This book is honest and written from personal experience. It effectively communicates the importance of worship, the importance of parents taking responsibility for passing their faith on to their children, and the importance of having children in worship. I am a director of Christian Education inmy church, and I am going to spend 5 weeks teaching this to every parent that I can get to attend the class during the Sunday School hour. I hope it transforms how we worship together on Sunday mornings. I pray that impacts not only the children, but also the parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here I am to Worship - while parenting in the pew!
First I decided to read this book before giving it to my grand-daughter who has two pre-school children. Then knew it would be of great benefit for a parenting class.
Excellent info for parents as they instruct their children to worship with 'Parenting in the Pew.' Currently I am leading a class at church using this book along with the Bible. It instructs all ages to 'worship' which is what we are to do for all eternity - worship the living LORD. So this is the most important lesson to share with our children or people of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting in the Pew
This is a must-read for any parent who has ever struggled with trying to train kids how to worship while enduring the stares and comments of older whorshippers who wish you'd "just take him to the nursery."For many parents, that is the easy out, and they can worship in peace. For those who took those baptismal vows seriously though, it can be a real challenge to make itthrough those difficult "training years" and this book, written by the wife of a pastor who had to deal with her two boys in the pew while Dad was preaching, has tons of great tips for how to help little ones learn what it means to worship, and become an enthusiastic member of the congregation.

I loved the chapter on "Sunday morning begins Saturday Night." I still need to be reminded of that as my children are past the diaper stage, but still need to be in "churh clothes" on Sunday morning. If you only read that chapter, this book is worth it!

This book also gives parents the encouragement to deal with the comments and stares, and maybe even stand up to the naysayers who think your children should NOT be in the pew with you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource!
Wonderful tips for how to engage our children in worship - and some good reminders for us parents too!I can't wait to lead this in an adult Bible study next fall... I highly recommend this book for anyone who has children in church! ... Read more

I have used this book several times over the last 20 years .... earlier editions, of course, and still find it a very valualble resource in helping new parents learn the skill of parenting.

5-0 out of 5 stars HAS ALL THE ANSWERS!
I gave parenting classes 25 years ago using the original "STEP."It was amazing how many parents were helped using the information they learned from this program.I purchased and reviewed this new edition before sending it to my daughter and was pleased to learn that all the basic principles were carried foreward. If parents just read it and follow it, there will be a big improvement in their child(ren)'s behavior. One of the biggest lessons learned is we cannot change anyone BUT we can change the way we handle situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!
This is by far my favorite parenting book, although it is not a "typical" parenting book.Yes, it's about parenting, but it's also about so much more than parenting. While one can read the anecdotes and apply them to children, they can also be applied to our other relationships as well. From a parenting perspective, this book challenged me to try to see the world from our children's perspective and to slow down and engage in the present moment.I was reminded of the dangers of labeling our children, either to them, or even to ourselves - that these labels are limiting. It helped me become more patient. It revitalized my commitment to persevering in a formal meditation practice.

If you are looking for a discipline book - a book that outlines specific childhood behaviors and how to eradicate them, then this is not the book for you. It's not a "how to" book. It's not black and white. But, in my opinion, it is so much more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed, "Wherever You Go, There You Are," I was excited to read "Everyday Blessings".I could not have been more disappointed. As a parent, I was looking for concrete examples of mindful parenting. The book felt preachy and at times, condescending. There are other books out there that are much more helpful if you are looking for techniques to improve your parenting, such as "Buddhism For Mothers" (great for Dads too!).

5-0 out of 5 stars a different perspective
As a newbie to parenthood, I find this book enlightening and helpful on many levels.Trying to stay present and in the moment is a constant struggle, but the authors give you the gift of their experience and knowledge to help you stay engaged in the day to day joys of being a parent. Our culture is so busy being over stimulatedthat we are losing sight of all of god's gifts before us each day, including raising our family!Stop, breathe and enjoy your child before this day is over!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everday Blessings
Worthwhile reading for time-strapped parents who want to be more present in their everday interaction with their children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I had hoped
I was hoping this book would help me learn to be a calmer, more patient, and contented parent. While there were lots of examples, I felt this book was rambling and didn't really give me practical help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for adoptive parents.
Dan Hughes understands children with poor attachments better than any other expert in the field. We continue to follow his guidance and have seen dramatic shifts in our little girl.Plus, as parents we feel so much better having tools that work with our daughter. If you are searching for support, understanding, and reality based strategies for parenting a child with poor attachment this book will meet your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a lifeline
I wish, I wish, I wish I had read this book and heard Dr. Hughes speak before my explosive, difficult-to-parent foster son moved in.And then, reread the book again every three to six month months after that.

Fortunately, we have managed to make a lot of progress in spite of my mishandling of many situations, but how much sorrow and anguish we could have saved for both my son and myself had I understood what was going on.

For me, the book is a perfect blend of theory and example, but I do think Dr. Hughes (or someone) might consider writing some of this advice in the format of Boy's Town Foster Parent book, which is so helpful because it just tells the parent: do this.Sometimes, when the chaos is at its most intense, I need to be told what to do (kind of like my son!)

For those of you who are foster parenting and want to be reminded of what a difficult, demanding job you are doing, how important your role in the life of the child is, and that there is hope to create a loving, joyful relationshiop -- read Dr. Hughes book, and, if you can, attend a workshop. My hope, energy and commitment have been renewed. Thanks Dr. Hughes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Resource for Parents and Professionals
Psychologist Daniel Hughes has done it again with his newest book, Attachment-Focused Parenting. In his highly-skilled and talented manner, Hughes has managed to take the complex terms and concepts of attachment theory and make it accessible for the reader. Hughes helps us to better appreciate that the parent-child relationship is a two-way interaction, with each being greatly influenced and affected by the other. Of equal importance, he helps the reader to see that parenting goes way beyond guidance and discipline; rather, both parent and child require a context for understanding what happens between them, and each is influenced by their own history.

Hughes relies extensively upon examples and real-life scenarios as he makes his points. In doing so, he appeals to a wide spectrum of parents. That is, he cites the example of a four-year-old who screams with frustration, while later addressing the parent-child struggles of a 16-year-old. Independent of age, however, the concepts Hughes lays out are universal for all children, regardless of age.

Get ready, though, as Hughes reminds us that the parent's own attachment history greatly affects the parent-child relationship. This certainly isn't new, as how often have we caught ourselves saying, "I never thought I would say/do what my father/mother did..." Without writing a self-help book for parents, Hughes proposes some questions and concepts parents should ask themselves about their own history, given the part it plays in raising their kids.

As a child psychologist who primarily works with foster and adopted children and their families, I continually deal with kids who have their own attachment issues to work through. While a professional can assist a child in this regard, much of the work to be done centers on the child's relationship with her parent, be it foster, adoptive, or birth. Because of this, Hughes' book will be at the top of my reference list for the parents I work with, but also for other professionals. ... Read more

Finally, a comprehensive parenting book for adoptive families!Over 100 contributors have helped EMK Press to weave a stunning tapestry of advice specifically for adoptive parents.Parenting adopted children requires parenting with an extra layer and this book helps you to understand where that extra layer falls. This 520 page book is a wealth of information for the newly arrived home family and the experienced family as well. This is "What to Expect" for the adoptive family. It is a book you won’t read all at once, but come back to again and again as your child’s awareness of who they are and how they came to join your family develops and your awareness of how to parent them evolves.

Our adopted children come to us from loss–loss of a birthfamily, perhaps a culture, and sometimes language. There are helpful things that we can do to address these issues, and Adoption Parenting helps you to create an awareness to do just that. We also look at stumbling blocks to good parenting, and standard parenting practices that aren’t the best solution for adopted children.

We look at the core issues all members of the adoption triad face, and look at how that affects standard parenting challenges like sleeping through the night, discipline and attachment. We cover specific challenges families have faced: FASD, trauma and PTSD, sensory integration, speech and language delays, learning issues, food issues, racial differences, and at ways to effectively parent a post-institutionalized child.

We also look at how each of us has been parented and how that affects the parenting choices we make for our children. There is a section which includes articles on Post Adoption Depression, the importance of support networks (both for your children and for yourself) and when and how to find therapists if that is warranted. The book is filled with resources and links to help find more information on a specific topic as your parenting or your child needs.

Each person comes to parenting from a different place and the needs their children have are unique.Adoption Parenting: Creating a Toolbox, Building Connections allows the reader to choose which tools are helpful for their particular situation and which are not. This isn't a book about what you have to do to parent, but about perspective, awareness, and understanding that overlays how you parent. This book is designed to help each of us become the best parents for our children and to offer support and connections for families on the journey of adoption parenting! ... Very informative and very easy to read.Covers a wide range of subjects, sleep issues, food issues, discipline, etc from babyhood to teenage years.Lots of practical advice from adoptive parents. A very good book to have to reference to often throughout the growing up years.

2-0 out of 5 stars awesome book, but some pages not printed
This is a great resource book, but the vendor needed to check their copy more thoroughly as a number of pages were missing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Annoyed
My husband and I are planning to adopt an elementary aged child through the foster care system. I purchased this book because it had excellent reviews with a wealth of information. I was quickly disappointed when most of the topics only refer to children adopted from other countries or orphanages. There was a wealth of information about this group, but not much about other groups. Furthermore, there is only one chapter pertaining to older child adoption. The best book i have read thus far is called "The Connected Child". It's an excellent book on parenting skills, building attachment, and issues related to discipline.

4-0 out of 5 stars a must-have
This compendium is top-notch. A couple of criticisms:The content is highly useful, but the editing needs help. Random and incorrect comma usage was distracting, and there are more than a few typos. This book could use a revised edition (already). Also, read this book to be prepared, but be aware that it is slanted towards the belief that adoptees WILL NECESSARILY HAVE certain issues, feelings, problems, and I think it is dangerous to make such generalizations. It is good to be informed, but put these potential issues in perspective. Product Description
Foreword by Michael Shermer, Ph.D.

Contributors include Richard Dawkins, Penn Jillette, Julia Sweeney, and Dr. Donald B. Ardell

It’s hard enough to live a secular life in a religious world. And bringing up children without religious influence can be even more daunting. Despite the difficulties, a large and growing number of parents are choosing to raise their kids without religion.

In Parenting Beyond Belief, Dale McGowan celebrates the freedom that comes with raising kids without formal indoctrination and advises parents on the most effective way to raise freethinking children. With advice from educators, doctors, psychologists, and philosophers as well as wisdom from everyday parents, the book offers tips and insights on a variety of topics, from "mixed marriages" to coping with death and loss, and from morality and ethics to dealing with holidays. Sensitive and timely, Parenting Beyond Belief features reflections from such freethinkers as Mark Twain, Richard Dawkins, Bertrand Russell, and wellness guru Dr. Don Ardell that will empower every parent to raise both caring and independent children without constraints. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very quick!
I received this within 5 days of my purchase and the book was in great shape!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read no matter what you believe
I found this to be the best book I have found on raising children with respect and love. The importance of allowing children to think and act for themselves and eventually becoming who THEY choose to.This book was a great eye opener to me as a parent. It teaches the importance of honesty and the lack of need for parents to make excuses. It discusses the value and importance of open discussion. One of my favorite points brought out in this book is the power behind the statement "I don't know".I honestly believe that this is one book that should be a requirement for anyone who has or is planning on having children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I've only started this book but it feels like it's just what I've been looking for. As a nonreligious, former-catholic, it seems to bridge the gap for me when it comes to teaching my child ethics, morals and what I believe. It's helping me form words for my thoughts on spirituality and organized religion. It also makes me realize that I am not alone, that many many people are not part of organized religion, are not christian. Since American culture is christian-biased (with holidays and traditions reflecting this), I want to give my child a familiarity with christianity and cultural traditions (and why I don't follow the religion).

This book is a helpful tool for nonsecular, nonreligious parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information with a story like approach
I saw this book awhile ago and was interested in it because of the title. When I was assigned to write a paper about religion in my ethics class I immediately thought of this book. I had to express ship it, but I am so glad I ordered this book. The book has some great information from philosophers and I quoted many in my ethics paper entitled, Raising Moral Children without Religion. The book is organized into chapters, each by a different author and their experience or view on religion or religious topics. I am also a non-religious mother, so this book served more than one purpose and I would definitely recommend it to anyone exploring this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for secular parents
Parenting Beyond Belief is a wonderful resource for secular parents. It combines personal reflections and practical advice, while exploring the values and virtues behind morality. Especially helpful are the sections on raising secular children in the midst of religious neighbors and on the value found in wondering and questioning.

In our society, it is helpful for non-believers to become religiously literate. Ideas are given for exploring various religions with children to understand both the good and the harm that can come from religious institutions. There is also a wonderful section exploring holidays, including the pros and cons of teaching children to believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

The book is not entirely focused on religion or philosophy, but rather on raising free thinking children. For example, chapter eight, Jaw-Dropping, Mind-Buzzing Science, explores the wonder and meaning that is found through scientific discovery. Also in this chapter, an essay on evolution clears up some popular misconceptions and puts evolution into terms that are easy for anyone to understand.

The heart of the book discusses morality as it applies to both being and doing good. There are explorations of the process for developing emotional empathy and moral reasoning, as well as discussions about what values are at the core of human ethics. While this book is largely a collection of essays from contributing authors, the editor, Dale McGowan, introduces each section and weaves the themes into an enjoyable and thoughtful read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening Book!
This book opens up one's eyes to certain mindsets/perceptions of child-rearing.. with regards to how you were raised and its effects, and the type of parenting style you use or want to embrace.Very intuitive, easy to follow, not like a dry textbook, very helpful in creating healthy relationships.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the parent of a traumatized child
This book was recommended by my daughters psychiatrist. My daughter has PTSD and this book has given me great insight into how to help her develop after the trauma. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs some advice on helping a child develop personal, social, and mental skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY Recommended
I've bought at least eight copies of this book over the last fifteen years. I first came across it when studying counselling it was a favorite of our teachers. Now, I give them as a 'birth gift' to new parents, I also recommend this book to clients who haves concerns about their children and, what 'comes up' for them. As the saying goes 'children don't come with an operators manual' ... it's so true. We're like computers ... programmed with data from our caregivers that we then access to relate to ourselves and, parent our children. That data doesn't change until we recognize it and decide to change it ..... reprogram.
This book is user friendly, it's easy and fun to read, yet is full of some of the most important and relevant theoretical material around. The authors have also gone to great effort to make their book practical and dedicate it to parents who despite doing the best they can, find themselves struggling in the unknown territory of being a parent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard
Very hard to read...I am not in the medical profession.I would have liked to have had an easier read to understand the concepts.Didn't help w/the problem I have at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK - A MUST-READ FOR EVERYONE!
This book is EXCELLENT! I have learned SO MUCH about myself and my kids through this book. This is a definate must-read for anyone and everyone who has kids or who might have and/or want kids. Even if you had or think you had a great childhood, this book has vital information for helping to understand the reason behind your own and the kid's behaviors. I am half-way through this book and already know I will read this book over and over. ... Read more

Product Description

Men and women not only have naturally different communication styles, but unique approaches to parenting as well. While mothers tend to overprotect their kids, fathers tend to push them toward independence. And whereas many experts tend to advocate “a united front,” Drs. Kyle and Marsha Pruett reveal how Mom and Dad not always being on exactly the same page— which, initially, may seem to cause conflict— can actually strengthen the whole family.

Informed by the Pruetts’ research and extensive experience with parents and children, Partnership Parenting offers a new outlook. In addition to fascinating biological insights, the book features strategies for negotiating common “landmine situations” from birth to age eight, from discipline and bedtime to helping kids with homework and teaching them responsibility.

With wisdom and humor, Partnership Parenting helps couples take advantage of their individual strengths to raise confident children while simultaneously improving their marriage.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!
From what I've read so far it's a wonderful book. Very spot on in the differences between men and women and their parenting styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sober and good quality guide
I was struck in reading this book by how clear, direct, and sober it is about the importance of getting fathers engaged in co-parenting, and I could not agree more. From my own experience, and watching that of my niece and nephew, it seems very clear to me that children are very aware of whether their fathers seem to have wanted them or not, and wanted children end up leading dramatically more successful lives than those who feel unwanted. (I do not have children and am thinking about it if I can find a good father.)I am appalled when women friends of mine reveal that they had children without the father really wanting children (which seems to happen much more often than I would have expected).

As the Pruetts point out, it is much easier to tackle these issues before the baby is born than after you are divorced. The soberness of their advice I found helpful, taking the gloss off the sometimes romanticized views that many people express about having children.

The book offers good, down-to-Earth advice that I imagine is helpful to men who are unaccustomed to childcare. And I liked how they reiterate that women need to learn these skills as well.Just having a womb and breasts is not enough.

Of the advice, I was glad to see the repeated references throughout the book to the importance of both the mother and father being sensitive to the child's needs and the reference in the divorce section to how one parent should handle it if the other is insensitive (empowering the child to assert him/herself with the insensitive parent, including ways he/she can communicate that).I hope not to marry an insensitive partner and not to be that myself, but I think it is good to recognize how to respect your child's relationship with the other parent and to empower him/her in dealing with it (how I wish my mother had done this with me, instead of expecting me to coddle my father).

The separate spheres approach of the 1950s and earlier, where the mother parents/nurtures and the father provides/rules, still seems to be in place in many homes.Having grown up in a home where I felt traumatized by my father's inability and unwillingness to respond to my needs, and my mothers' passivity, dissociation, and lack of agency or adult standing in the world, I would like to suggest to readers that this separate spheres approach does much more damage than you may realize. You may think you have more money this way, and perhaps you do (or perhaps you don't), but it has significant nonmonetary costs for your child, perhaps even rendering the whole parenting project completely ineffective when your child does not get a good start in life.

It's mostly common sense but there are tons of parents out their that are too busy to plug in to what their kids are doing.I loved this book because it is simple and makes a difference. We, as parents, owe it to our kids to share family dinners and make everyday special to them in some way. They need to learn there are consequences to their actions and they don't always get want they want. This book is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found the missing instruction manual that should have come with my daughter!
I found it very useful and comforting to know that A - there are others just like her, we are not alone! And B - it works! While I never want to break her wonderful spirit, there were times that I wondered if we would ever make it through. We did, with the help of this book and most of all by changing MY behavior. It truly does take the whole family's participation and willingness to change their behavior and reactions in order to change the 'strong-willed' child's behavior. Thank you for giving us these tools!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting the strongwilled child
This book really helped me see that my grandchild has hope and it worked as soon as I started using the knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immediate results
This is one amazing book. I've recommended it to just about every parent I know, especially ones having problems with their child. Most parents want to be good parents. Not all parents know how.

I was at my wit's end with my then 5 year old. When I was done with the book, I found myself with a sweet little boy. What a difference parenting style can make.

Parenting the Strong-Willed Child doesn't just tell us what we know (positive reinforcement, consistency, etc.), it teaches how to do it right. It is a five week program, and if you're dedicated, it will work. I decided I was going to do it exactly as prescribed and I saw results from the very first week. In fact, each week, I noted improvement and that was what motivated me to finish the program.

This program is well worth the effort and cost. I am forever grateful to the authors who helped me completely change my relationship with my child.
