Product Description

Temper tantrums in the supermarket. Tears that seem to come out of nowhere. Battles over homework that are more like wars. When your child has problems regulating his or her emotions, there's no hiding it. Children with intense emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds and are prone to frequent emotional and behavioral outbursts that leave parents feeling bewildered and helpless.

Other parents may have told you that it's just a phase or that your child needs discipline. In reality, your child may have emotion dysregulation, a tendency to react intensely to situations other children take in stride. Parenting a Child Who Has Intense Emotions is an effective guide to de-escalating your child's emotions and helping your child express feelings in productive ways. You'll learn strategies drawn from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), including mindfulness and validation skills, and practice them when your child's emotions spin out of control. This well-researched method for managing emotions can help your child make dramatic emotional and behavioral changes that both of you will be proud of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solutions for Parenting Emotional Teens
Of all the books I have read, this one is the clearest explanation of why my teen acts the way she does and more importantly, what parenting strategies can help us cope.I have tried many of the techniques in the book over the last several months and each one has not only proven effective, but has improved the relationship between me and my daughter. My daughter has been diagnosed with Bi Polar Disorder and shows many Borderline Personality Disorder symptoms.I did not understand her "rages and irrational explosions", let alone how to deal with them. The techniques in this book are workable solutions to provide parents with the tools to de-escalate their teens emotions and subsequently help the child to learn to calm themselves down. I would strongly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and wise advice that can transform your life!
This book is packed with understanding, and offers many new strategies for parents to cope with situations that sometimes seem hopeless. The authors have adapted the fundamental principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for use by parents on themselves. They also have added lots of their own ideas and combined clinical (professional) and personal (parental) insights. The books includes lots of examples about somewhat younger children, but the exercises and the practical strategies work amazingly well for parents who have mid- to late teens or even young adult children with emotional dysregulation.Above all, if one opens up and considers that things can get better -- much better -- through a willigness to change ourselves (as parents) and how we respond to truly difficult parenting challenges, it can and does happen. The basic starting points are reassuring -- we are doing the best that we can and so is our child; and at the same, we can do things in new ways that more efefctive! This book stays by our bedside -- truly -- and we opened it again this morning and found strength and encouragement therein.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical book for parents, teachers, and other professionals
In this very readable book, Harvey and Penzo give many practical suggestions for parents who are dealing with a child who has frequent intense emotional outbursts. They point out that a child's angry, explosive behaviors are the way he has learned to manage his feelings, and that he needs to be taught new skills.Expecting a child to know how to behave in all situations is unrealistic. He must be taught until he can use skills in all situations.

Just as the child needs new skills, this book teaches new skills to parents to help them more effectively help a child manage his emotions. The goal of the book is to help parents think and respond "wisely", incorporating both feelings and logic, when responding to the child's behavior.

The authors recommend that parents remind themselves that their child "is doing the best he can," and that they balance "acceptance of your child in the moment with expecting and helping him to do things better in the future."At the same time, they remind parents that "you are doing the best you can and that you can do better."

As a parent of a child with intense emotions, and an elementary teacher, I highly recommend this book for parents, families, educators, and other professionals. The practical strategies are useful for our work with all children to make them (and us) happier and more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use this resource when every other book hasn't helped!
I am the parent of five children.Four of them are able to manage their emotions and social interactions appropriately. This book has been extremely beneficial for me to more effectively parent my fifth child who struggles with intense anger and mood swings and who has difficulty maintaining friendships and making safe and healthy decisions. The parenting techniques I use for my other children don't work for this child. This book helps parents recognize when their child is in emotional distress; it teaches you how to help your child manage these overwhelming emotions and how to respond differently to behaviors you want to decrease. Other aspects of this book that I appreciate and recommend to other parents are the chapters on taking care of yourself and on how one child's emotional disregulation impacts the whole family.I have post-its throughout the book, and you will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs these skills!
This easy to read book provides key techniques for dealing with difficult interpersonal situations. These are life skills, not just for dealing with a child with intense emotions.

"Parenting a Child with Intense Emotions" provides clear direction and actionable skills that you can use immediately to make you more effective. It teaches you how to stay calm and reach an effective solution while minimizing conflict.

5-0 out of 5 stars Convicting and Inspiring
My kids are 7 and 9 and I wish I had read this book earlier, but I'm thankful I read it now. This book gives us a vision of what it means for parents to disciple their children to become followers of Jesus. My two favorite chapters are the one on family worship and the one on the role of dads.

Family worship has become so archaic that it's easy to dismiss the idea as a relic we've have outgrown. This book makes a great argument for its value and provides and points to resources that will make it easy to pull off.

The role of dads in the spiritual development of our kids is, of course, not original, but Rob Rienow gives an inspiring call to us fathers to rise to this crucial calling.Something great happens in a family spiritually when the father becomes energized with a passion to model and teach Jesus in his home.If the dads (including this one) of this country would learn to consistently shepherd their family with love and grace and creativity, the alarming statistics that we read now about children of Christians leaving the faith would radically change.

This is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!!
I have been waiting for Rob to publish this book for some time - and he did not disappoint! This is a very readable case for the role of parenting in guiding the spiritual formation of their children. There is also an excellent section (two chapters) on building faith in a marriage. Rob does a good job of dealing honestly with the biblical text without becoming dry or laborious. The title is a little misleading as this is NOT a book on disciplining your children (or parenting in the pop psychology genre). This is a great starting place for understanding the current tread in marriage and family ministry within American Christianity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for families
My wife and I have gotten so much out of this material. We have four kids and we want to see our family as our primary ministry and as a base for our ministry to others - we serve the Lord overseas. Rob and Amy have inspired us from their own experience and they've shown us how to apply these principles in a practical and meaningful way.We have shared this with friends and colleagues who have also benefited greatly.Great work! Thanks Rob and Amy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Resource!
Where was Rob 30 years ago when I needed him???But he's the voice "for such a time as this", and parents with kids of all ages at my church are grateful and impacted by his message.Poignant...humorous...authentic...practical...guiding parents to explore God's call to impress His ways on their children.Visionary Parenting has captured my heart and has given me a focus in my ministry to families.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most important message next to "The Gospel"
Next to the Gospel it's self, I believe this is the most important message parents can hear. God is doing a mighty work through Dr. Rienow and it is all captured in this book.
Dr. Rienow has spoken at my Awana Leadership Conferences, using the material out of this book, and it was life changing for many people. I have seen it even change the direction Pastor's were leading their Churches.
This is a great book to give to new parents at Baby Dedication at your Church.
If there is going to be a change make in our country, it will be done through our family and this book give us the formula. ... Read more

Make no mistake. This author will not tell you how to raise your kids. The guidance is very round-the-block.Not one of the most enlightening books.Maybe because we don't scream that much!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Parent Needs to Read This Book
Screamfree Parentening is one of the best books I've read on Parenting, it's easy to read and has very applicable.I have recommended this book to all my friends and family members. If you are looking for a "Raising Kids" manual, this is it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this guy and his ideas about parenting
This is a great book for the parent or parents who want to have a better relationship with their children. It made me realize how harsh I was treating my 11 yo son (who thinks he's 16) and gave me tools to deal with him in a more calm way. highly recommend it

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is a good, no nonsense approach to managing discipline in your house. Once you understand the key point, "Take care of yourself so others don't have to." it all makes sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
Author Hal Runkel has hit upon an imaginative way to teach parenting: by stressing the need for parents to remain emotionally composed and self-controlled. If only all parents would see this light!

Hal Runkel is a marriage and family therapist with a particular interest in raising well-behaved children. Yet instead of focusing on how to achieve behavioral control of the kids, this book attempts to change the behavior of the adults in the household.

Every kid wants a "cool" parent, Runkel advises, yet the kind of "cool" that helps most is the kind that means calm, collected, and in control of his or her emotions.

Using witty chapter titles and insightful anecdotes (you'll enjoy the discussion about `judo parenting') Runkel essentially advises you as a parent to say what you mean-calmly-and mean what you say. He devotes a couple of chapters to the danger of threatening dire consequences without backing them up with actions, and the value of such consequences when they're actually imposed-by a calm parent.

What's new here is the packaging, not the theory, but Runkel's terms and descriptions are witty and fresh. Parents of young children or parents who feel like their children are `out of control' may especially enjoy this book.

NOTE: Together with wife Lisa, Dr. David Frisbie serves as executive director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California. They have authored numerous articles and eight books about family life, including "Raising Great Kids On Your Own," and "Happily Remarried."

Product Description

Grow a secure attachment with your children by listening to your heart

Popularized by bestselling pediatrician Dr. William Sears, "attachment parenting" encourages mothers and fathers to fully accept their babies' dependency needs. According to the growing numbers of attachment parenting advocates, consistent parental responsiveness to these needs leads to happy and emotionally well-balanced children.

This practical, comprehensive, and first-ever guide to today's most talked-about nurturing style, Attachment Parenting shows how some conventional childrearing advice can be detrimental, and urges you to trust your instincts on such important matters as:

  • Responding attentively to your baby's cries

  • Minimizing parent-child separation

  • Avoiding "sleep training" for infants

  • Breastfeeding according to your baby's cues instead of a schedule

  • "Wearing" your baby in a cloth carrier rather than relying on "baby gadgets" such as plastic carriers and carriages.

In addition to expert advice from pediatricians, lactation consultants, and anthropologists -- as well as words of wisdom from hundreds of real parents -- Attachment Parenting includes an exhaustive list of print, Internet, and support-group resources. It's an indispensable, hands-on reference that allows you to confidently and joyfully develop a secure and loving bond with your young children.Amazon.com Review
"Attachment to and dependency on parents... is a normal, healthy aspect of childhood and not something that needs to bediscouraged." This quote from Attachment Parenting: InstinctiveCare for Your Baby and Young Child sums up the attitude behind thegrowing shift in many Western cultures toward a labor-intensive butarguably more rewarding, effective, and "natural" way to raisechildren. This philosophy, termed "Attachment Parenting" by itschampion, pediatrician and father of eight Dr. William Sears (authorof the popular child-care manual The Baby Book, amongothers), sees infants not as manipulative adversaries who must be"trained" to eat, sleep, and play when told, but as dependent yetautonomous human beings whose wants and needs are intelligible to theparent willing to listen, and who deserve to be responded to in areasonable and sensitive manner. As with Sears's books, there are noplans or schedules here, no specific prescriptions for what to do withyour child. Techniques to facilitate connection and communication areoutlined, but mostly the book is an exhortation to listen and totrust yourself, and to trust your child's ability to convey toyou what he or she needs.

Information is provided in a well-organized format that parents willfind useful. Common questions regarding some of Attachment Parenting'sless orthodox tenets are answered, and each section of the bookprovides lengthy reading and resource lists, Web sites, and e-mailaddresses. This book also provides a fairly broad discussion of howworking parents can incorporate such a "high-touch" style of care intotheir busy schedules. The authors are sometimes painfullystraightforward about the cost-benefit analysis parents must gothrough when deciding to work outside the home, but they do notpatronize working parents by glossing over this difficultdecision. They show how Attachment Parenting can be especiallybeneficial to these families and give advice on choosing child care, breastfeeding after returning to work, and the techniques for creatinga breastfeeding-friendly workplace.

Given the overwhelming cultural paradigms that parents must resist ifthey are going to adopt this compassionate methodology, the book's sometimesdefensive tone can be at least partially excused. As a whole, parentswill find this a good overview of some compelling arguments forAttachment Parenting and a wonderful resource for delving deeper intothe issues it addresses. How much of it they choose to integrate intotheir lives is, as the book emphasizes, their decision to make, with their baby. --Katherine Ferguson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars An FYI about the author
It's on her blog, so she definitely wanted the world to know about it, or I wouldn't have posted it here.

I would be EXTREMELY wary about taking parenting advice from someone whose teenager has a drug habit so hardcore, he spent 8 1/2 months in an inpatient treatment facility, and upon leaving was beaten up by a drug dealer in a deal gone bad and put in the ICU.

1-0 out of 5 stars A frequent flyer book
This book is a frequent flyer because of how often I threw it across the room while trying to read it.The author seems to be clearly confused. On one hand, she claims that attachment parenting is about what works for you, your baby, and your family. On the other hand, she claims that if you or your partner feel uncomfortable with any of the ideas that she deems necessary, it's because your mommy and daddy didn't love you enough.

    Seriously.

Even better, she advocates unsafe practices like turning a crib into a co-sleeper.I'm already not a fan of the idea of co-sleeping because I do believe it to be a safety risk. But to advocate using a product in an unsafe manner to fit your own dogma is just irresponsible.

I checked this book out from the library because I wanted to learn more about the various parenting philosophies and come to a better idea about what works for us.If it weren't for the fact that I talk to people who practice attachment parenting on line, this book would have convinced me that every single person who uses it is completely and utterly insane.I'm so glad I didn't actually spend money on this book.I'm still willing to check out the ideas behind attachment parenting, but I won't be learning from this author.I'll take someone who can go more than one chapter without contradicting herself, thanks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Borrow this book from the library
This book serves as a good reference for products and other books related for attachment parenting. There is so much more to attachment parenting than this book presents. If you borrow this book from the library you can read it in an afternoon. At the end of each chapter is a list of other references. Attachment parenting is so much more than just breastfeeding, co-sleeping and baby wearing. This book is fine but not exhaustive on the subject. Dr. Sears' books are the ones to buy and keep for day to day referral.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read like an Infomercial
I wanted to like this book as I am trying to be responsive (bfing on demand, ecing, family bed) and respectful parent and was looking for some research or helpful ideas, but this book gave me nothing new.It read like an infomercial for Dr. Sears products and I found that to be annoying- even though I do love The Baby Book by Dr. Sears. This book in content might be a good 101 on attachment parenting...maybe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trust your baby's cues
I wish all parents read this book before having their first baby. They would save money (by not buying gadgets) and spare themselves and their children many needless difficulties, sleepless nights and crying.
Katie not only convinces the reader of the value of attachment and responsiveness towards your baby, but also gives precise guidance, covering every possible question a parent may have. The book is well organized, visibly pleasant and easy to follow. Most importantly, it provides the guidance every mother wants and, if babies could talk, they would say, "mommy, read this book and do what it says, please." So, do your baby a favor and read this and other books that bring you back to trusting the need to stay connected and responsive to your baby and child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Need encouragement?

This book puts to shame the old adage of putting teens in a barrel and nailing the lid shut. (I've actually heard that 'in jest' from pulpits...how depressing...)Not so here!Paul David Tripp encourages parents to value children as the gifts they are from the Lord especially as teens. I, too, like detailed reviews, but I gave my last copy away and cannot give any specifics. Please, however, just considering the title, see how it emphasizes the 'opportunities' available during these tumultuous teenage years.Find hope and courage in The Lord Jesus and remember that Joshua and Caleb inherited the promise land and not the other 10 who were looking at the 'giants'.Positive, empowering and completely bible-based book, buy it!I am ordering my third one now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thankful
This book was recommended by a friend. As a believer of God's Word, this is finally a book where the author has searched God's Word and Ways to help parents shepherd and teach our teens. As parents, we are managers of what God gives us, including our children. Our first role is to obey God and then teach them to. If you are looking to be a parent that wants to please God, besides the bible itself, this is a wonderful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!
I am still in the process of reading this book, but I had to share how it has already helped me as a mom of two teens. Through this book, I have found a new way of relating to my girls and the results have been wonderful. The author has a gift of relating to and understanding teens. He does a wonderful job of sharing this gift with parents through his writing. I have read MANY books on parenting and am so tired of the books that make you feel like you have ruined your children forever if you haven't already followed their special formula for raising the perfect Christian child. I have read books that have beaten me down as a parent. It is so refreshing to read a book that is such an encouragement to parents raising teens. Paul David Tripp speaks of teens in a positive light and shares his own experiences with his teens. He shares his mistakes as well as victories. He has a way of reminding parents what it was like to be a teen & he gives parents a new understanding of this important time in a child's life. What I found most helpful in my own situation was how the author has parents examine their own hearts and states that if our hearts are controlled by something other than God, we will not view the parenting opportunities of the teen years as opportunities. We will view them as irritating hassles. He goes on to explain some typical parental idols & how they shape our responses to our teens. This was a very enlightening chapter and really made me examine my own heart. It truly explained why I was having a difficult time relating to my teens. This book not only helped me feel encouraged, it also gave me practical ideas in raising teens. It has blessed me already and I am only a little over half way through it. :) I highly recommend it to all parents. I am going to purchase more copies to give to friends as their children hit the "pre-teen" years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for All Parents no matter what Age!
Paul Tripp has provided an excellent resource for all parents, youth workers, grand parents, anyone really that deals with kids. This book provides great biblical insight into principles to use to shepherd your teenager. This book is not only useful for those with teenagers but all ages. He provides examples that all parents can relate to and how to respond in your own heart to the issue and how to address the issue in your child's heart. This book is easy to read, biblically informed and relevant to all parents no matter who your child is.

Here's a great guidebook for parents of children ages 6 to 16 facing a myriad of family challenges: a teen who's defiant; siblings who constantly bicker; a child having trouble in school, or parents and kids who occupy the same house but don't communicate or have fun together anymore. Common Sense Parenting provides parents with a menu of proven techniques that will aid them in building good family relationships, preventing and correcting misbehavior, using consequences to improve behavior, teaching self-control, and staying calm.

The book shows parents how to approach discipline as positive teaching rather than punishment of their children. Encouraging children by recognizing their good behavior and teaching before problems occur are as important as correcting children's negative behavior. Parents also learn how to help children solve problems, reach goals by using charts and contracts, and practice new social skills. As each new parenting technique is introduced, the authors explain each step, provide many clear examples, and give parents an action plan for implementing it in their home.

This newly revised and updated book answers parents' commonly asked questions and offers new behavior charts and more helpful information than ever. New chapters include those offering advice on setting reasonable expectations for children, creating predictable family routines that help children feel secure as well as improve their behavior, and putting together a parenting plan using all of the techniques explained in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it possible to LOVE being with your child during the teens?YES!
This book has opened my eyes to what is really important during my kids teenage years...having a relationship with them.I struggled as a mom of a teenager to step out of my "role" of a mother and step into being a "mentor" and walking ALONGSIDE my teenager instead of trying to tower OVER him/her. I have learned to take a moment during some of those difficult little "bumps" in the teenage road to ask myself if it's really worth the confrontation to put a kink in my relationship with him/her?I have read it not once, but three or four times. It is a Biblical reminder of how much God loves ME and how much God has forgiven ME...why should I not be as forgiving and loving to my teenager?I highly recommend this book to ANY parent wanting some support and guidance during those years.BUT, don't wait until you are already in the trenches to read it...get a head start and read it while they're still young, cute, and cuddly!

I love you Susie Davis. Thanks for sharing your heart, wisdom, and knowledge with others.Keep on writing!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for moms of teenagers
While most parenting books seem to be about taking control of your child, Davis teaches you to pray about your relationship with your teen and shows you how you can work with your teen and see things from his/her side.Sometimes it is important to be on our child's side not constantly nagging them.We need to show our teenagers we love them and that we are on their side.We need to be the person they know will show compassion and understanding for whatever they are going through.Davis does an excellent job of showing us how to love our teenagers through all their stages and phases while, at the same time, giving the right amount of guidance and discipline so they will grow into responsible adults who also love their moms and dads. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Parents of AS kids - Buy this book!Read this book! Use this book!
I bought this book a while ago, but didn't start reading it until recently because I was reading other books (learning about AS; dealing with schools and IEPs; etc.).I have an 11 year old AS child who wasn't diagnosed until he was 9.From the first page of the Introduction, I knew this was going to be helpful and that the author had experienced the same things I have.

This is the way I like self-help non-fiction because she offers practical tips (VERY practical tips) on how to handle certain situations and the book is formatted so it is quick and easy to find the issue / tip you're looking for.She explains each tip with wonderful, in-depth background, but you only have to read that if you need to.

The author also provides not only "on the ground" advice (dealing with every day problems), but also a "38,000 feet" view. For example, she recognizes that the parents / caregivers of an AS child is an unbelievably difficult job that can task the body with stress, anxiety, and just sheer exhaustion. She provides excellent advice and suggestions for those parents / caregivers, like "keeping the tank full" because if you as the parent aren't taking care of your own health, pleasure, happiness, you won't be very helpful to your child either.

Thank you for writing this book. This is one of the books that lives up to its goal and title. If you have an AS child, you should not just buy this book and let it sit on the shelf like I did; you need to read it and use it IMMEDIATELY.You will see immediate results in yourself, in your child, in your child's school, and in your family.

I wish I had read this book years ago. We all strive to be good parents, and there are some ideas in this book that I had never thought of.Best of all, it's an account of a "real" family's triumph over adversity.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I Could Do it Again
Teresa's book would have come in handy as we raised our teenage children. The book is a wealth of practical, tested, non-threatening, workable ideas that restore peace and harmony to a family.Parenting Without Pressure requires consistency and commitment but the outcome will be worth the effort.Children will learn responsibility and accountability and parents will learn what a blessing their children can be and that family is something to cherish and nurture. An excellent tool that provides help and hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver of a book
I am indebted to Teresa Langston for coming up with such a terrificapproach to dealing with strong willed teens.I used this system with my two high school daughters. They did not like it at all at first and were always trying to figure out ways to beat the system - but they found out that violating boundaries had a consequence.
From the minute we started the system, I felt empowered as a parent. Finally we as parents had some guidelines for these turbulent teen times, real consequences and incentives for good behavior.
Now my teenagers are both in their twenties and contributing members of society. We are also best friends again. We look back on those days of struggling and we talk about those times as adults now. It's a bitter sweet memory. Life is good now.Thank you Teresa.

Common Sense Parenting of Toddlers and Preschoolers shows parents how discipline can be more about teaching than punishment and more positive than negative for both you and your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute BEST
This is my all-time favorite parenting book for young children. I've taught its principles over and over again to parents of various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. And when the parents are committed to trying something new, the children always respond with positive change (although it might take more time for some children). I can't say enough how fabulous this book is! It should be required reading for every parent. It's easy to read, teaches simple and do-able skills, and includes interesting statistics.

2-0 out of 5 stars not for everyone
This book is for parents who regularly yell at, threaten, berate, and lose their temper with their children, and are looking for calmer, more reasonable alternatives.Unfortunately, that was not me, so I did not find much useful info in here. It is not for parents who are looking for firmer and stronger discipline strategies to deal with children who are constantly challenging them.

Also, it is quite a stretch to say this book is for preschoolers AND toddlers. It's really just for preschool age, unless your toddler is highly advanced verbaly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I felt this is a good book at helping parents deal with issues they are having with their kids.My issues were my 3 & 4 year old would not listen the first time around and i was always repeating myself. Also they use to go to bed without complaints and now they keep coming out or fighting. This book gave us methods to use, which seem to be working. This book help me see things my kids do that push my buttons, and how to stop this. Now i feel more calm even when my kids are losing it.I don't have that 'i am going crazy' feeling very often.I found myself saying "Stop!" or "Don't!" all the time. Now i am calmer and say things like "Let's make a better choice please."My kids seem to like it better, and have a good idea of the rules and consequences. The book help us with more structure without giving a schedule.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful Toddler Parenting Book
I decided to try this method because I had used the Boys Town Common Sense teaching method as a school project.I really liked its "non-bully" approach to dealing with students who were misbehaving.I particularly liked the preventative approaches that reduced the amount of misbehavior in general. Now that I have a toddler, I really wanted to use the same type of approach and had struggled with doing so.I tried other books and methods but found them to be outside my style or ridiculous and difficult to apply. This book is just what it says:"Common-sense" and it WORKS.It is easy to apply and doesn't require a Masters to use.My son has made amazing progress behavior-wise.I highly recommend this book for those who like a simple program for profound results.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
This book is VERY basic and overall boring. There are better books out there for sure.Try your local library! ... Read more

    Product Description
Kids with sensory processing disorder SPD may seem unduly sensitive to physical sensations, light, and sound, and they may react strongly to sensory events that adult and other children take in stride or totally ignore. SPD can make it hard for kids to do well in school, participate in social events, and live peaceably with other family members. Until now there have been only limited resources for parents of kids with this condition, but in this book a child advocate and child psychologist offer this comprehensive guide to parenting a child with SPD and integrating his or her care with the needs of the whole family.

The book introduces SPD and offers an overview of what it means to advocate for a child with the condition. It describes a range of activities that help strengthen family relationships, improve communication about the disorder, and deal with problem situations and conditions a child with SPD may encounter. Throughout, the book stresses the importance of whole-family involvement in the care of a child with SPD, especially the roles fathers play in care-giving. Many of the book’s ideas are illustrated with case stories that demonstrate how the book’s ideas can play out in daily life. ... Read more

I like the fact that you really look at the family and the domino effect created by everyone living in the household, PSD or not.I also like the fact that you give a foundation of information for families to use, an introduction to the whole picture. Then I was even more impressed by your follow through on contact information to go deeper.

Your introduction to recognizing differences of each partner and using them to the families advantage instead of letting it separate and/or divide was also well done.Once again, you followed up with contact information to go deeper.

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with others.I will be recommending this book to families and providers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet --very helpful
I am finding this book very helpful. The chapters are short--30 minute read or less but are packed with useful information. Each step seems very well thought out. Lots to mull over and to begin to apply in your life. Each step parallels one of AA's 12 steps but with a eye toward improving the quality of life left after a traumatic childhood. Each chapter is followed by meditations and daily self-parenting affirmations. This probably isn't the first book that you should pick up in beginning a recovery from trauma but after you have a bit of experience under your belt this is very good for moving forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I am home!
My son is now eight months old.I received this book as a christening gift.I read it at work during my ten to fifteen minute pumping breaks and I ususlly end up crying.Crying not because I am sad - but because the voices of the author and the parents reach out and touch my soul..holding me gently while I fumble my way through these early months. In a world that often feels so isolating the words and stories in this book make me feel part of a larger community. It reminds me of the Mary Oliver poem, Wild Geese, "You don't have to walk on your knees...you just have to love...recognizing your place in the family of things."This book is helping me to feel my place in the family of parents; a family that is both ordinary and extraordinary at the same time.

So often styles of parenting are overly politicized...It makes it hard to listen to that still voice within that guides us better than any book.Rabbi Kreimer has managed to articulate the power that comes when we listen to ourselves and our children. The beauty and transformative power of these stories is precisely in many of the places where we feel so inadequate - our so called weaknesses...Please bless yourself and all the parents and parents-to-be you love with this book - it is, to quote St.Augustine, "soaked through with grace."

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Share of Night Our Share of Morning
This delightful book is written from a spiritual and maternal perspective. It explores parenting in the frame of reference of a single day beginning with the middle-of-the-night feeding of an infant. The story of "one day" has a "parallel theme" of raising children from infancy through adulthood. The author addresses the beauty and joy of daily life as well as illness, loss, and grieving in the context of parenting.I've read the book a number of times and enjoyed it immensely. It would also work well for a discussion group. Her writing is very insightful and provacative.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will read and reread this book!
This book will make you remember the reason you had children and make you forget diapers, cholic and 2 am feedings.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for an expecting/new parent.
I can't believe this book is out of print!I first read it while I was pregnant with my first child and it transported me.Put away all of your how-to books, cuddle up with this one and let your instincts guide you downthe path of good parenting.... ... Read more

    Product Description
Most parents do a pretty good job of raising kids, says psychologist Laurence Steinberg, but truly effective parenting means not just relying on natural instincts but also on knowing what works and why. In The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting, Dr. Steinberg distills decades of research into a parenting book that explains the fundamentals of raising happy, healthy children, giving readers an invaluable map to help them navigate parenthood from infancy to adolescence.

Dr. Steinberg found that the basic principles for effective parenting are simple and universal, and apply to all parents and children regardless of background. He explains each principle and shows how to put it into action, using anecdotes and examples: from "What You Do Matters" (parents make an enormous difference; children are not simply the product of their genes) to "Establish Rules and Limits" (how to provide structure in your child's life, and how to handle conflicts over rules) and "Help Foster Your Child's Independence" (help your child think through decisions instead of making them for him or her). Concise and authoritative, written with warmth and compassion, The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting is an intelligent guide to raising a happy, healthy child and to becoming a happier, more confident parent in the process. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best parenting book I've read
"The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting" is my favorite parenting book. That's because it focuses on the essential principles (love, consistency, etc.), yet also (a) gives examples for various situations and (b) provides guidance on how these principles apply as your children get older and mature. In addition, it provides the advice within the context of your child's age, temperament, and other factors (like whether both parents work). And it's quite readable and well-written, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best parent advice book available
This book should be read by every parent. It provides the over-arching philosophy for being the kind of parent you want to be. The principles apply to all issues (eating, sleeping, toileting, discipline, etc.) and across all ages and stages of a child's development (infants to teens).

In a class on parent-child relationships at a university, my students and I reviewed over 200 parent advice books. This is the only book that's based on research. Dr. Steinberg has pulled together his own considerable research as well as decades of other's published scholarly work involving thousands of families across many cultures. Other books we reviewed were based on the author's opinion, experience in raising their own children, or working with families in a single medical setting. Most of the other books were based on a single theory or principle of child rearing, but were not explicit in describing either the theory or the effects of that theory on both the child and the parent. Yes, I wish Dr. Steinberg would have given us a list of his references, or cited a few scholars, but, if he had done that, sadly, I'm convinced it would have been a turn-off for the readers who need this book's advice. I take him at his word that he has synthesized what the experts have learned and put it into a language that non experts can understand.

The principles are easy to apply. The examples given are helpful and varied across age groups and various situations. My job after retirement from the university is to respond to parents who call a "Parent Warmline" with questions about their everyday relationship with their child. Before returning the call, I always turn to Steinberg's book for help in developing a list of things for the caller to consider. The book never fails me and the callers think the advice is terrific - thank you, Dr. Steinberg!

There is scientific evidence about what works best in interactions with children - and it's all here in this one very readable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applying the best of research to practice
Steinberg's book brings the best of research to the everyday lives of parents.Drawing on many sources and years of research about parenting, he has created a thoroughly useful, provocative book about parent child relationships. The pages are filled with food for thought,
    and practical commentary. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've developed a lot of respect for this book
My wife and I are expecting our first child, and even though I've had thoughts all my life about how I would parent, I thought I would get myself a real education, so I bought a lot of books.

I feel that most books have a lot of philosophies that I can't relate to, many overly focused on how to discipline and control your children, and how to make them live up to a lot of (in my opinion) arbitrary adult standards (how to make your 3 year old do her violin practice -- I mean this as a joke, but that's how it feels). There are so many things in society trying to shorten childhood, and I believe that forcing your children to do all these "adult" things makes them do everything out of duty as adults, and not ever really want to.

I also remember very clearly what it's like to be a child, and I would have been a lot easier if adults would have simply levelled with me. But somehow, most of these books seem to bypass the whole communication aspect. Don't get me wrong, the parent is certainly the parent, and should have the authority when necessary. But arbitrary authority has had an extremely negative impact on my life, and I believe I got a little screwed up because of it.

Anyway, enough about me. But I read this book with the prejudice of it being another book that is focused more on what the parents want than what the children need and helps them blossom as mature, solid human beings.

As I read this book, I suddenly developed a deep respect for the author. I completely agree in my heart with almost everything he says, and I've seen from other parents (friends/family) who parent much like he suggests, that this is absolutely the way to go. It creates healthier, more respectful, more loving, and more fun relationships. But I also appreciate how the book both gets to the point, at the same time as it never wants you to believe what it says "just because". In effect, the amount of information and wisdom in this book could easily have been padded to an 800-page whopper, which he thankfully didn't.

If the author is reading this, I want to personally thank you for this book. Very well done.

    Thank you,

    Per Holm-Petersen

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Parenting Guide
The 10 Basic Principles of Good Parenting is a must-read book for parents that have children from infancy through adolescence. The principles are based on scientific research, and are proven to work no matter what a child's background may be.Doctor Steinberg does an excellent job of not only explaining each of the principles, but also in giving real-life examples of how the principles should be applied. He also goes through each stage of a child's life and explains how to adjust some of the ideas to fit the psychological mindset of the child at that stage.

I found the chapters on establishing rules and limits, fostering your child's independence, being consistant, and avoiding harsh discipline to be especially helpful.I also liked Doctor Steinberg's "heads-up" on when the difficult and most trying times in a child's development would occur. These are the ages when the biggest changes occur in the brain - a "re-wiring" so-to-speak.

The 10 Basic Principles of Good Parenting is an excellent guide for raising happy children and fostering confidence in a parent.I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting That Works
This is a very good read, it provided lots of useful information on parenting, building good relationships and an understanding of how to handle some difficult instances that comes with being a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Building awareness within myself.
I love this book.I have read a good majority of the book and not only does it have good tips but best of all what I have really gotten out of it is increased awareness of how I approach every issue or learning opportunity with my child. We have such an impact on the development, or lack of, with our child in ways we are not always aware of.Things such as body language, tone of our voice, and the words that we choose.Sure, I know not to talk down to my child or cruel her but hidden messages in what we say can have a negative impact. This book really made me more aware of the words I choose when speaking to my child and the questions which I ask.I also notice how so many other people talk to their children in ways which are negative without them even realizing it.

I recommend this book for parents and professionals.I am both.My daughter is a typically developing 2-year-old but my specialty, experience, and career are with special needs children, mainly who have Autism or ADHD.This book has some great ideas that I have used successfully with the children I work with and helped provide strategies to help their families encourage growth and development.

1-0 out of 5 stars Parenting that Hurts
I read this book as part of a mail order course for the continuing education required for my Occupational Therapy license. I was extremely disappointed and often shocked by the lack of warmth, love or intuitive parenting in the book. I have two children, ages 3 and 6, and I found nothing in this book to be helpful. I'm glad I didn't read this in my first, impressionable years of parenting or I might have followed the poor advice within. This book is an anathema to anyone who wants to build a strong and lasting relationship with his or her child. My advice: try a Dr. Sears book or the incredible book Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers by Neufeld and Mate.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dry and uninspiring
Very dry reading. Can't hand a candle to the Love and Logic concepts and books.
