Good Choice
Just getting started in hiking again after a few years. Recommend the book and the bookseller

Best and Easy Day Hikes
My family recently took a trip to the west (south?) side of Zion National Park. We ventured on some of the hikes mentioned so I can only speak to those.

The book gives information in two distinctly different ways. One way is the very dry, just-the-facts writing as if an accountant were spewing numbers during a presentation. The teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off keeps ringing in my ear during much of the the reading of this book. Now, if you just want the facts, that's fine. Gimme north, south, east, west, tree names, shrub names and the like.

This alternates with an almost over-the-top romance novel type of writing. "A series of twenty-one switchbacks has been built cunningly into a rift in the wall here and bears the traveler upward at a calf-burning pace." The hike wasn't that hard. My 6-year old did it without 'burning' his calves.Or, "The trail climbs vigorously to reach the elevated mouth ... then levels off as it enters the the cool inner recesses of the cleft." Ahem.

The information, as far as I can tell, is not wrong. (except the trail name for "The Temple of Sinawava" is now called the "Riverside Walk" trail) The writing is just not the best.

Go to [...].The information given is up-to-date, accurate and much more conversational.

By the way ... stock up on groceries, water, gatorade, etc. Prices are about double near the park at the groceries.

One of the Best of the Best
Zion National Park was the first park where I was truly captivated by the scenery.I was 9 and had just completed my first ascent of Angel's landing and realized hiking was the best sport in the world.Now, of course, I have a job and my time for visiting Zion, or indeed any park, is severely limited.I want to spend a few days, see the highlights, and then return to work so I can pay for my next excursion.At this stage in my life, books like this one from the Best Easy Day Hikes Series are a joy.They provide a sampling of short to intermediate hikes that I can use to plan my day.Molvar and Martin's contribution to the series, however, is better than most.

Despite having Zion and Bryce in the title, this book actually provides a selection of walks and hikes for much of southern Utah.It does offer 10 hikes in Zion, including Angel's Landing and the East Rim (neither of which should be considered "easy) and 6 more in Bryce.But it also covers Cedar Breaks and a variety of hikes in forests and state parks throughout Utah's "Dixie" lands.I would have added a few walks in Snow Canyon, the colorful low elevation rival to Zion, but this is still a fine selection of hikes.So if you are planning a short visit to southern Utah to explore parts of canyon country, this book is a good choice.It includes the classic hikes in the region, and more than a few hidden gems you would not know about otherwise.

Good second source
The actual national park guides are really as good, but it is a decent second source to read about the hike.I did use it.But not a must.

Getting most out of minimal time
The entire series of Falcon Guides: THE BEST EASY DAY HIKES xxxxx are a delight to read and then follow.For those with a minimal amount of time to see vistas, canyons, and other scenery in parks and other areas of the country you can really experience a good variety of the locale by taking any of the hikes in these books.

I have about a dozen of these books, mostly of the western US and have referenced all of them in my hiking plannings.They are pocket size which makes them easy to carry with you and easy to read an understand.

Just what I was looking for!!!
This book was exactly was I was looking for to prepare my trip to the USA.

too light for my taste
Seems to have good summary of the parks.But it is so light in content, ~4 pages per park?, most web searches would come up with similar information.It's good for browsing all the national parks to see which one interests you, but not good enough if you want to visit one in particular.

Getting ready to use it next week
So far it looks like it is just what I need for our trip to the Rockies in the near future.

A Must Have For Visiting NPs
While on vacation this summer at Glacier National Park, I came across this book in the bookstore.I started thumbing through the pages and saw all the information contained about each park.We had already spent the morning just stopping at the usual tourist turnoffs in the park, but after purchasing the book, we followed the step by step recommendations on what to see and what to do in the park. The book lists the specific amount of time each activity should take as well as additional background information about the activitiy (how the geological formations were created, what the wildlife behaviors are, etc).Not only did it guide us to the best locations, it gave us a lot more information about the locations that the typical park visitor wouldn't have.After Glacier NP, we were headed to 3 more national parks before the end of vacation, and I kept this book by my side the entire time.I never received incorrect information or wished I had not taken the advice the book gave. It was perfect, and I can't wait to use it on our next vacation to a National Park. On a side note, I did pay full sticker price for it at Glacier (since I didn't have the luxury of ordering it off Amazon right then), but it was definitely worth it...even at that price!

A Fitting Replacement
For years I relied on the Rand McNally National Park Guides by Dr. Michael Frome, PhD. This was a guy that actually went to the Parks and gave firsthand guidance on what to see, when to see it, how to approach the parks and where to stay. When he retired and stopped developing National Park Guides (the last were for Frommer), I felt a great disconnection because there was no one replacing him as the park system expanded and changed.

Then I found the National Geographic Guide to the National Parks at a NPS visitor center. In the spirit of Michael Frome, it tells you how to get there, how to visit, what to see, how to see it, when to see it, how much time to dedicate to a park based on your interests and what excursions from the park are worthwhile. These guides improve on the Frome guides by providing better pictures and maps but fall short by not providing information for National Monuments.

Although the National Parks are spectacular, National Monuments, in my estimation, are equally worth your time because they are generally more accessible.You can absorb a National Monument more completely than a National Park because they are smaller, less daunting, and less crowded. In fact, Rangers are more available to you at National Monuments since there is less of a crush of visitors.In any case, perhaps I'm recommending to National Geographic that they develop a National Monuments companion guide to go along with their lovely Guide to the National Parks. ... Voices In The Park arrived at my house a little bit bent. As in, it was not in good shape at all. Aside from that, the book was crazy. I didn't like how the mother was discriminatory towards others, but maybe that's to teach the children that discrimination happens and is not good.

Teach Voice, Symbolism, and More
This is a book that I've shared with many of my fellow teachers at school.I've used it with second through fifth graders.Wonderful tool in teaching children voice in writing.The illustrations almost outdo the narrative - 4 different viewpoints of a day at the park.Wonderful - looking forward to more of this type of book from Mr. Browne in the future!

A cross between a practical travel guide and a coffee table book
I'm planning a trip to the Grand Canyon for next fall and I was happy to find this book. In addition to the stunning color photos throughout the book, there's a lot of practical information here. The first part of the book gives a nice overview of the park's history and natural features.

Great book but left out some older parks
A lot of good info in the book, but I wish they would have spent more time on Olympic Park in Rochester; Willow Point Park in Webster, Gaslight Village in Lake George; Frontier Town in Hudson; Land of Make Believe in Upper Jay and 1000 (or 1001?) Animals, in the Adirondacks.

Packed with information, but flawed writing
This is a great resource for any lover of amusement parks, particularly their history. It has incredible detail - even listing the years individual attractions opened - and great historical photos to complement the text. The writing leaves something to be desired, and is a bit formulaic (he uses phrases like "on the rebound" and "(name of park) is one of the most (adjective) amusement parks around" a little too frequently), but the book is packed with so much information about the parks' current statuses and their histories that this can be easily overlooked. ... The Ultimate National Park architecture resource
The book is an incredible feat of covering the national park historical architecture. The writing is excellent and filled with facts and observations. It helped me to enjoy the parks in an informative way.I packed it along on trips this summer and recommend it as a great resource.

interesting book - but has incorrect information
We purchased this book for the Mesa Verde National Park Library as Mesa Verde's historic headquarters and CCC buildings are featured.The historic building were discussed, but no pictures were included of the buildings.Instead, pictures of the ancestral puebloan dwellings were shown and they were terribly mislabeled.A few of the other parks I was familiar with looked like they had accurate information, but I cannot speak for everything else. ... The period advertisement reproductions are excellent
In the era when railroads were the primary method of arriving to a national park, railroad companies encouraged the designation of national parks and were the allies of preservationists, though their motives were not altruistic. The railroads sought more passengers and in turn, more profit. National parks proved the ticket to achieve their aims. Though not driven by preservationist aims, railroads had a hand in raising ecological awareness among their passengers and even magazine readers, with striking, sometimes full-color advertisements in periodicals nationwide. In Trains of Discovery: Western Railroads and the National Parks Alfred Runte looks not only at history, but shows the price the nation has paid, both socially and environmentally, for its love affair with the automobile.

Runte details the crucial role railroads played in the establishment, protection and improvement of national parks. The Northern Pacific was at the forefront of efforts to designate Yellowstone a national park. Other rail lines played similar roles, such as the Great Northern's vociferous campaign to designate Glacier National Park. Railroads unwaveringly supported the National Park Service legislation, looking forward to working with one government agency committed to promoting national parks (49). Stephen Mather, the first director of the Park Service, teamed with railroads to promote the national parks. The railroads rarely portrayed environmental consciousness in their guidebooks, but dependence on unspoiled scenery to sell national parks as a destination restrained more extractive aims, such as logging and mining (24). Railroad support of Yellowstone as a breeding ground for big game heightened awareness that the West was a refuge for wildlife (29).

In the 1960s, rail transportation to national parks and the NPS alliance with the railroads dimmed. As early as 1916, automobile passengers exceeded train passengers in Yosemite National Park (66). Opponents of the Yosemite Valley Railroad were misguided into thinking the line would have a negative impact on the valley. By 1945 the Yosemite Valley Railroad ceased operations and the NPS was given no choice but to accommodate more automobiles to please the surmounting hoard of tourists. At first, preservationists sided with auto accommodation, thinking it would be better than alternatives such as reservoirs and power lines. It is clear the automobile has degraded the environment more than any rail line ever could. The National Parks have intensely suffered from Americans' desire for greater independence behind the wheels of their cars.

Runte advocates public transportation as the only way to serve both access and preservation (7). He details how the shuttle service instituted in Yosemite in 1970 became popular once tourists realized the convenience and lack of auto congestion. The mandatory shuttle service in Zion National Park has seen similar positive reception.

Though the narrative is engaging and informative, Runte's treatment is light. He leaves the reader wanting more. The volume lacks thorough detail, such as the perceptions of the national park railroad experience from its early passengers. The narrative clearly utilizes a "top-down" approach. The book's main strength is its reprints of period railroad advertisements and photographs. The reader can actually decipher the text of each advertisement and get a feel for the romanticism of the age - a romanticism Runte hopes will resurge so national parks will be better preserved for future generations.

An imaginative look at passenger trains and National Parks
Trains of Discovery does well what few books seem to do today -- it looks into the texture of American's past for hidden lessons important for our future.The author has done a masterful job educating readers about how and why America's railroads contributed to the development of the National Park system, a unique story about an industry electing to connect itself with America's spectacular natural landscapes.It examines the railroads' commercial objectives, their sponsorship of unique artwork that captured the spirit of the age, the mobility and development issues at the time, and how all of this affected our national cultural identity.This book, with its clear writing and rich illustrations, also makes learning about all this fun. The author looks to the future and passionately and effectively conveys the need to restore passenger rail service to natural areas as an alternative to auto congestion and pollution.He concludes, "Trains and the national parks just naturally go together."He has me convinced, and as an author and public speaker I've found myself quoting Mr. Runte's book many times. ... Charming collection of stories for young children
I bought this from Chinaberry, the great children's catalog. I was so thrilled to get it and find it was a such a thick book! It's a collection of stories about Percy, a park ranger. He's friends with all the animals and has all sorts of interesting and funny stories to tell. My two kids love the book.
