Product Description
The field of community corrections has experienced unprecedented growth and change over the last ten years as a result of both increased public concern for crime and the criminal justice system's response to that concern. Today, more than three-quarters of the nation's offenders under some form of correctional supervision are supervised in the community, most on probation and parole. The second edition of this successful collection attempts to chronicle this evolution by bringing together articles that describe, and sometimes question, traditional practice in the field. Sincethe first edition, several authors have contributed a great deal to our understanding of what works in the field of community corrections, and their work is now represented in this collection. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Parole may have different meanings depending on the field and judiciary system. All of the meanings originated from the French parole, meaning "(spoken) word". Following its use in late-medieval Anglo-French chivalric practice, the term became associated with the release of prisoners based on prisoners giving their word of honor to abide by certain restrictions. Parole should not be confused with probation, as parole is serving the remainder of a sentence outside of prison, where probation is given instead of a prison sentence and as such, tends to place more rigid obligations upon the individual serving the term. ... Product Description
One of the most contentious and sensitive topics in criminal justice, Life after Life Imprisonment looks at the release and resettlement of life-sentenced offenders in England and Wales - where there are very few prisoners in the system for whom 'life' means life.

By providing an in-depth analysis of the post-prison experiences of 138 discretionary life-sentenced offenders, all of whom were released during the mid-1990s, this book looks at the reality facing Lifers as they are released at some time during their sentences, usually on very long licences, to be closely monitored and supervised by probation officers. Using accessible and comprehensive data, it examines key legal developments within the criminal justice system for discretionary life-sentenced offenders, explores the frontline experiences of the probation officers charged with supervising life-sentenced offenders, and analyses the 'stories' or life narratives of a group of individuals who have committed some of the most serious crimes. It also examines the process of recall for life-sentenced prisoners and explores key factors associated with failure in the community.

Of interest to legal scholars and criminologists, as well as practitioners in the field, Catherine Appleton's book offers a major insight into how societies respond to serious crime and identifies important elements of successful reintegration for released life-sentenced offenders. ... Read more

Product Description
Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832-1899) was a 19th-century American author who wrote approximately 135 novels. Many of his works have been described as rags to riches stories, illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. He is noted as a significant figure in the history of American cultural and social ideals, even though his novels are rarely read these days. After attending Harvard Divinity School from 1857 to 1860, he took a ten-month tour of Europe and produced works of a patriotic nature. Alger's empathy with the young working men, coupled with the moral values he learned at home, formed the basis of the first novel in his Ragged Dick (1867). The book was an immediate success, spurring a vast collection of sequels and similar novels, including Luck and Pluck (1869) and Tattered Tom (1871). Amongst his other works are Five Hundred Dollars; or, Jacob Marlowe's Secret (1890) and The Young Acrobat of the Great North American Circus (1900). ... Read more

Book was the same as described and in good condition. Also, I LOVE it because it is the same information as the newer edition which costs over $100 more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized and confusing
I hated this book. (I hate the instructor even more, but that's another story for another day.) I can only speak for the 7th edition (since we all know that once you buy a book, textbook companies are already forcing the instructor to buy the newest edition so that students can't resell the now-obsolete older edition).

You would think that a book about probation and parole would have a first chapter on what is the difference between the 2. Instead, you get a first chapter on the "state of corrections today".That chapter throws a lot of terms on sentencing that would be better explained *after* you find out the differences between parole and probation. In fact, this chapter should be the last chapter.

Unless you went to a good high school like I did, you would unfortunately not understand the vocabulary used in the book. It talks about "vacating" a sentence without ever defining what that means. Even in context, I could not figure it out.Thank you to Google for helping me with that. Sadly, many of my classmates couldn't get past the word "differential" in "differential police responses" on the first page of the first chapter. Again, nothing that defines that word in context.

There is a lot of information and detail, which is a plus. Unfortunately, they're not very logically placed nor are there reasons to include some of that info.

I don't know whether to blame the editors or the author(s). Editors need to either suck it up and learn to be aggressive with their authors, or the authors should take a back seat and let people who know how to write dictate how their ideas should be presented.

Perhaps the newer and unpublished 8th edition addresses these issues already, but it's too late for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Community based corrections
Had to have this book for my CJ class, I found it to be very helpful with lots of good information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Media Mail
The book was alright - although it described it as still in the plastic, but the plastic was very loose. Also, I paid for expedited shipping for the product (5.00)- and it came to me later than I had anticipated by regular media mail - (1.28). When I pay for express shipping, I want the book quicker than media mail delivers. Frustrating.

Product Description

Over several hundred years, the juvenile justice system has evolved from one in which a child offender was prosecuted under the same guidelines used for adults to the current system in which society has recognized the unique status of juveniles within the criminal justice framework. Written by world-renowned legal scholar Cliff Roberson, Juvenile Justice: Theory and Practice provides a comprehensive overview of the system that administers the prosecution of young offenders. It examines how the juvenile justice system began, its current state, and the direction it appears to be heading.

Topics discussed include:

  • Types of juvenile delinquency cases, arrest statistics, juvenile justice organizations, and the concept of judicial waiver
  • The history of juvenile courts, including the parens patriae doctrine, early laws, In re Gault, and concepts of reform versus punishment
  • Delinquency causation philosophies, including social, cultural deviance, symbolic interactionist, and psychological theories
  • Types of abuse and neglect, child protective services, and child abuse prevention programs
  • Law enforcement agencies, the structure of juvenile courts, juvenile court procedures, transfers to criminal court, and the concept of individual rights
  • Juvenile probation and parole, juvenile institutions, group homes, boot camps, and shock programs
  • Selected issues in juvenile justice, including drug abuse, juvenile sex offenders, and youth gangs

The book cites actual court cases to demonstrate concepts, provides review questions at the end of each chapter, and includes a glossary of relevant terms. A concise and practical text on juvenile justice, this volume facilitates understanding of this complex and critical subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars worse than bad...
I previewed this book for my corrections class, thinking thatit would be a very interesting, insightful book my students could benefit from - It turned out to be a big disappointment as I read from one page to another. It was not at all what I had expected, was poorly written, poorly organized and had no redeeming qualities, although I looked hard for them during my reading. I would not recommend this book for any criminal justice curricula.
