4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good for Board Review
I'm over 1/3 of the way through this book while preparing for the PEM Boards 3/09.So far I'm very happy with how the content is pared down to the absolute essentials for each chapter, you can go through it fairly quick. At the beginning of each chapter they list some of the special considerations for peds, for example, blunt chest trauma is affected by a child's flexible bony thorax, or for head injuries they review the biomechanics caused by the child's large head, etc.I ordered this because of the question format at the end of each chapter, they are ok, some seem unnecessarily picky but so did the new PREP-EM questions from the AAP.

I was worried the info would be out of date as it is a few years old but I haven't found that to be a problem.

Good luck to all in March!

Product Description

Thoroughly updated for its Sixth Edition, Principles and Practice of Pediatric Oncology provides a comprehensive review of the multiple disciplines that make up the care and research agendas for children with cancer. It is the most comprehensive textbook of pediatric oncology ever put together, covering biology and genetics and detailing the diagnosis, multimodal treatment, and long-term management of patients with cancer. The fundamental principles of supportive care and the psychosocial aspects of support for patients and families are also discussed.

Twenty percent of the chapters in this edition are either brand-new or written by new contributors, and all the other chapters have been considerably updated. The book provides state-of-the-art information on the molecular genetics and biology of cancer as well as new approaches todiagnosis and management.

A companion website offers the fully searchable text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Detailed
A very detailed and evidence based book for pediatric hem/onc staff, fellows or CNPs. Would not recommend it for light reading for general pediatricians since goes into far too much detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Clinical Research
This textbook is not intended for physicians who are not, at the very least, specialists in oncology (not for general medicine, surgery, or pediatrics specialists).Moreso than a medical reference, however, this book is an excellent resource for clinical researchers in the field. It covers not only the clinical information for many forms of pediatric cancer (I was thrilled to discover such rarities as JMML included), but also treatment regimens, molecular and cell biology, and even pharmacology. If you are searching for a textbook that will tie together basic science with medicine, this is an excellent resource - but it does require background in both subjects.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 star for onc people.
useless for me. Nice door stop. Very molecular as well. For libraries and onc people. not for general pedi residents. Could impress on rounds if you read this, but then you're just showing off. Best book for pedi residents in heme onc is the secret's book or the mattel children's pocket book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing else comes close
This is the text to own if you want an overview of pediatric oncology.Thorough, in-depth, practical, with basic science issues covered.Written by (most of) the leaders in the field.A must own for anyone who sees children with cancer. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and verbose
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3MUQJPQPMD4ZB This book has plenty of words but not a whole lot to say.The first few chapters are a decent overview and provide a good foundation for your pediatric rotation in medical school.Otherwise, the book isn't that good.It doesn't have enough details to make you satisfied that you're learning something. It's a textbook that tries to be both complete enough and simple enough for med students that fails on both frontiers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Not a very good book. This book is not very helpful. It doesn't provide enough information on each topic.I tried to use it while on the pediatrics clerkship but it was not useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done! Very Detailed, good reference!
This is the 2nd Edition of this book, releasedin
2003, by Drs Bernstein and Shelov which tries to make
a case to become your primary Pediatrics text for both
core clerkships and subIs. Also makes a good reference
text for the USMLE exams, or shelf tests.
The book is a hefty one, with over 600 pages, divided
into 25 chapters. The chapters are logically broken
down into 2 large subgroups: General Pediatric
Practice, and Pediatric Subspecialties.

The General Practice section begins from birth,
essentially the approach to the newborn infant,
progresses thru health maintenance visits, adolescent
medicine, then off to other general peds issues. Also,
this book includes chapters on socioeconomics/culture,
as well as ethical issues, and managed care issues.
This is a welcome addition to any general medical
text, in this era of more culturally sensitive
medicine. I don't know how applicable these last few
sections are to the USMLE or to the core clerkships,
but they make for some interesting side reading. The
managed care explanations of health care plans is
particularly relevant in the managed care world of
today?s practice.

The subspecialty chapters are very well organized, and
have a high level of detail. There is an abundance of
information in various tables, diagrams and photos.
For example in Cardiology they begin with Congenital
Heart Disease and then explain pathophysiology,
clinical history, physical exam findings, EKGs,
murmurs, cardiac dysrythmias, etc. The other chapters
include infectious diseases, neonatology, development,
genetics, endocrine, GI, hematololgy, oncology,
allergy/immunology,. Pulmonary, neurology, nephrology,
rheumatology, dermatology, trauma, Peds ICU, pediatric
surgery.

Overall, the level of detail in the text is very good.
That is the greatest strength of the book, but at the
same time, makes it a dense textbook to read. It is
much easier to read than the NMS Pediatrics text, but
probably a bit thick compared to Blueprints.
Sometimes the level of detail is beyond even a 4th
year medical student?s need to know. Things like
specific drug dosages probably could have been left
out. These can always be looked up in a Pharmacopia or
Harriet Lane. Most of the diagrams are well done, but
it would have been nice to have more diagrams to break
up the text. In addition some of the black and white
photos appeared very grainy and difficult to interpret
probably due to the resolution of the computer scanned
images. There are some great pictures of pediatric ICU
procedures, but it is unlikely that a medical student
would get to attempt things such as a central line
placement!

The book leaves no stone unturned in the specialty
areas, and really does an excellent job of breaking
down major pediatric problems. I would have
appreciated having the chapter contents at a glance,
so it would be easier to find information. The current
layout is great for reading through, but if you wanted
to quickly flip to a particular section of a say
Pulmonary problem, it might take a few minutes.
Especially valuable are the pediatrics pearls
scattered throughout really help to tie in book
smarts with clinical practice. For Example : In some
cases of bacterial pneumonia, particularly of the
Right lower lobe, significant intra-abdominal
pathology such as acute appendicitis is often the
initial presentation. These clinical pearls along
with the numerous tables of differential diagnoses,
and diagnostic evaluations were especially helpful.

They also include a free CD Rom (Windows) that
includes a number of questions in all the topic areas.
You can take quizzes by chapter, or a mixed bag, where
you can specify the number of questions you want to be
asked. The explanations are generally good, for the
answers, but sometimes without reading the answer
carefully you have a hard time figuring out which of
the multiple choice answers is correct. The CD Rom
also includes a scoring system, that gives you a
percentage correct as well as a way to review the
questions you missed. It?s a nice freebie, to get you
prepped for your clerkship exams. The questions are
well done, and at an appropriate level.

Overall, Pediatrics for Medical Students, 2nd edition
makes a great addition to any medical student's shelf.
It's not intended to be a pocket reference, or a
Nelson?s Pediatrics, and is probably just a bit more
detailed than most students need. However, it is well
written, and fits the student well. It is a much
easier read than NMS Pediatrics, and is more detail
oriented than Blueprints for Pediatrics. If you need
something quick and easy to read, Blueprints is more
than adequate for most, but if you need a more
comprehensive text and are more deeply interested in
Pediatrics, Pediatrics for Medical Students is
definitely worth your time. Visit [...]! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best pediatric derm book for pediatricians
I love this book. I consider it the best pediatric derm book for pediatricians. Hurwitz is more comprehensive and is probably better for dermatologists, but this is more accessible for pediatric primary care and the price is more palatable. For family physicians, the new edition of Habif may be better for its nice combination of adult and pediatric dermatology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect window into the field of Pediatrics
This book is a great overview of the field of Pediatrics. It is a light and fun read--a nice change from heavy textbooks.I found myself wanting more detail at times, having to turn to a standard textbook. That said, I still really enjoyed the book and it imparted me with a qualitative knowledge that I didn't have before. It teaches basic principles which are seen not only in Peds, but in Internal Medicine as well.Furthermore, the book is written with enthusiasm so that you don't want to put it down. The authors have an ability to cultivate your interest in a field in which you might not have been interested before.I give it four stars instead of five just because I would have liked to see more detail in the book or perhaps geared towards more serious students. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good for peds
good for the general med student, not very good for specifically learning the neonatology stuff though.
i ordered second-hand and the 5th edition while the sixth was already out, and i dont see a difference what so ever, except the money i saved..

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad start...
This book gives good surface information on subject matters, but gets scanty on the pathology area of diseases. It is a nice start for those getting into clinical practice, but not one you take with you to clinic.

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative and useful
the book is very informative and hence very useful in practice. it contains update in the pediatric practice as to diagnosis and management. It makes the reader equipped with useful knowledge applicable to general pediatrics and sub-specialties as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
The book has a lot of stuff to get through in it, but set up well, complete and useful. Easy to reference back to as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only if you're going into Peds...
First and foremost: If you're not going into Peds, Blueprints or Kaplan with Pretest should be enough. Don't bother with this text as it's probably not what you're looking for.

I bought this (although I had no intention of going into Peds) because I needed a little more explanation than the review books give, and I was glad I bought it.It does have a lot of tables, but I found them to be a useful way to distinguish between similar entities. While on my Peds rotation, the residents always referred to the big Nelson's when they had tough questions. If you want to make a good impression on your attendings and/or residents because you're going into Peds (or you're just a gunner) then Essentials is the way to go.

Here's the conundrum: learn the material that will make you a competent doctor or learn the material that'll make you pass the Peds exam?

Unfortunately in Peds, the two are not the same.Peds exams are filled with things like vaccination schedules which change yearly and word association like Meckel's rule of 2s, and thumb sign.Actual practice of pediatrics requires an actual thought process... which is explained best by Essentials. ... It is a unique book that is pleasing to the eye, nurturing for the mind, and instructive for a broad readership."--New England Journal of Medicine

    4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW!
"The book covers various pathophysiologic aspects of each endocrine organ and its interaction with other endocrine and nonendocrine systems. Disorders of thyroid and adrenal glands, pituitary, reproductive organs, and endocrine neoplasia are extensively covered. Most large groups of metabolic diseases are reviewed as well. Concise, pertinent information is provided on mitochondrial and fatty-acid oxidation, urea cycle and glycogen storage disorders, as well as organic acidurias and amino acidopathies. The most useful and user-friendly areas are the 1-to-2-page "at-a-glance" sections in each chapter which provide concise yet pertinent information about the disorders within a particular group of endocrine disturbances or IEM.
This is a well written book and the multiple visual aids greatly assist in comprehension and memorization of the material...I strongly recommend this book without reservation." -- Doody's

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for clerkships
As a 3rd year medical student, I found this book very helpful to have in my pocket for studying dense information in short breaks. It helped me score very well on the Shelf exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive amount of info.
This book offers an impressive amount of info in just 2 pages per syndrome/disease.Love it for boards & reading up on topics you'll find on the office, however it lacks some acute issues you may find in the hospital. For instance, Electrolyte imbalances...a book like Inpatient Pediatrics sheds a great deal of light on that subject, but the book itself is physically larger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, concise reference for the medical student
This book has the essentials of over 220 topics in Peds - in a single page it gives you etiology, epidemiology, differential, signs and symptoms, treatment, and prognosis. What more can you ask for? Excellent as a quick reference and for studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Factual
As a practicing pediatrician, I use this book to review a few items that I have long since forgotten.I also recommend it to the medical students and pediatric residents that rotate through my office.I love the fact that the material is written in an easy to understand format. It virtually jumps off the page at you.I also think its organization into to etiology, epidemiology, differential diagnosis etc. makes it idea for the medical student. Its format reflects how you will be "pimped" on rounds and the key stats and concepts that you will see on the USMLE.A great read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great medical resource
