Product Description
Originally settled by Swedes, Pennsylvania became the single largest land grant to an individual in history when Charles II of England signed it over to William Penn in 1681. The transaction never turned a profit for Penn, but proved fateful - the colony quickly evolved into a nucleus of American politics, culture, and social reform. Complemented by 50 photographs, illustrations, and maps, this concise volume begins with the history of Pennsylvania from the Native American era to colonial times, when Philadelphia served as the birthplace and first capital of a new nation. It then moves through the centuries to explore the oil, coal, iron, and steel industries that developed in the nineteenth century, ending with an overview of modern-day Pennsylvania, with its varied and complex economy and workforce. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Philadelphia area records from the late 1600's thru late 1800's
Large book that would be cumbersome if in hardback.Heavy enough in paperback.Print is typewriter letters but clearly and solidly set on the page.

I took this volume to bed to read but laid it on the bed for support while reading.

It has a general history of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, a page of abbreviations, and a little history of each of the earliest four monthly meetings (Salem NJ, Burlington NJ, Philadelphia PA, Falls-Fallsington,Bucks Co. PA), their records, and where those records are kept.

There is a 135 page family name index with variations of spellings grouped together before all the page numbers are given.

Notice is made of any individuals within a family group entry of a different name.

I had great fun reading it cover to cover.1126 pages including index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Quaker Research
INDEX to the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy 1750-1930 by William Wade Hinshaw.

DearREADERS, "Totally thrilled" describes my feelings as I received my copy of the index to our library's copy of William Wade Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy 1750-1930. This past summer I discovered I have Welsh and English Quaker ancestry in Chester County, PA. (Merion on the Welsh Tract.) Prior to this I'd had no personal experience doing Quaker Research.

When I asked others about Quaker Research, they raved about Mr. Hinshaw's six volume compilation of Friend's Monthly Meeting records listing births, deaths, marriages and removals. That last term refers to entries in the church books when Society of Friends members moved from one area to another. They were removed from the old Monthly Meeting membership in order to join the new group.

We're fortunate to have Mr. Hinshaw's complete set of Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy at our local public library. As I uncover new names to research, I'll be turning again and again to Henshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy.

From the publisher: "William Wade Hinshaw's renowned Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, originally published between 1936 and 1950. Containing approximately 500,000 entries.. each volume ha[s] a separate surname index..."

"Almost no class of records, religious or secular, has been kept as meticulously as the monthly meeting records of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The oldest such records span three centuries of American history and testify to a general movement of population that extended from New England and the Middle Atlantic states southward to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia; then west to Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The importance of these records cannot be overstated. Not until recently have the vital statistics of Quakers been recorded in civil record offices.

Thus, for more than two centuries, the only vital records identifying these people are to be met with in the Quaker records themselves. Fortunately, the monthly meeting records contain extensive lists of births, marriages, and deaths, as well as details of the removal of members from one meeting to another. (The monthly meeting, during which vital statistics are recorded, is in fact, a business meeting.)"

Painstakingly developed from these monthly meeting records, Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy is the magnum opus of Quaker genealogy. In its production, thousands of records were located and abstracted into a uniform and intelligible system of notation. The data gathered in these volumes of the Encyclopedia are arranged by meeting, then alphabetically by family name, and chronologically thereunder. Volume 1: NORTH CAROLINA Volume II: NEW JERSEY AND PENNSYLVANIA Volume III: NEW YORK Volume IV: OHIO Volume V: OHIO Volume VI: VIRGINIA"

If as the publisher suggests, 50% of our pre-1850 US ancestors were Quaker, than every researcher needs a personal copy of the index, and every genealogy library needs the six volumeEncyclopedia! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Facsimile Reprint
This is a facsimile reprint. Each page is printed as a high resolution picture of the original page.Processing the pages as pictures is more expensive and takes longer than automated computer Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software that is used for less expensive reprints; however there is no danger of changing the spelling of words or the formatting of text so the book can be used and quoted from for research as if it were an original copy.

While OCR versions have cleaner text and can easily be reformatted to fit different electronic screens (i.e. Kindle versions) they can not be used for accurate research. With detailed genealogical and historical research a misspelled name or location could easily result in weeks, or even years, of wasted research chasing false leads. It is also important to be able to cite your research so it can be verified later and to verify the citations in other people's research before relying on them as evidence.A facsimile version assures that the same information will be found on the exact same page on the copy as on the original.

Product Description
Clearfield Company is pleased to publish in the same volume two excerpts from the Pennsylvania Archives that would otherwise have escaped the notice of most genealogical researchers interested in Revolutionary War land grants in Pennsylvania.

In 1754, the colonies of Virginia and Pennsylvania entered into a dispute over the ownership of what is today the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. At the time, Virginia's claim, which was encompassed within the boundaries of Augusta County, embraced all of Pennsylvania west of Laurel Hill and included the present-day counties of Westmoreland, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and parts of Allegheny and Beaver. The dispute raged over the course of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War--during which time frontier forts were constructed, rights for land were ceded by Virginia, and settlement waxed and waned--until commissioners for the two states of Virginia and Pennsylvania were appointed in 1780 to draw proper boundaries. Eventually, in 1784, new meridian lines were run confirming the present-day boundaries of the two states.

The first of the two excerpts from the Pennsylvania Archives reprinted here, Virginia Claims to Land in Western Pennsylvania, is a complete list of Virginia land entries in the aforementioned Pennsylvania counties between 1779 and 1780. For each of the 1,300 entries we are given the date of the entry, the name(s) of the parties to the transaction, and occasional references to subsequent transfers of grants, the amount of acreage, and a landmark indicating where the land was situated. Preceding the land records is a fascinating history of the thirty-year dispute between the two colonies/states.

The second excerpt, An Account of the Donation Lands of Pennsylvania, concerns the March 1780 statute enacted by the state legislature granting land in western Pennsylvania to the soldiers of the Pennsylvania Line who served in the Continental Army. The list of eligible soldiers is preceded by an introductory sketch informing us that the donation area comprised parts of the contemporary counties of Lawrence, Butler, Armstrong, Venango, Forest, Warren, Erie, and all of Mercer and Crawford. Here we learn the story of how the lands were surveyed, the terms under which the land could be claimed, contact with Indians in that region, and so forth. The 3,000 members of the Pennsylvania Line entitled to a donation are identified by name, rank, regiment, acreage awarded, and, sometimes, whether the individual claimed the land, was killed in action, relinquished his right to the land, etc. ... Product Description
This is the third volume of Pennsylvania German Church Records, a three-volumeseries which gives the genealogist access to all of the church records ever published in theProceedings and Addresses of the Pennsylvania German Society . These records areindispensable to anyone interested in Pennsylvania-German origins, but until now they havebeen almost impossible to locate as few libraries have a complete file of this scarce serialpublication. In each of the three volumes are births, baptisms, marriages and burials, the records that identifypeople and their relationships to one another--not only parents and children, husbands and wives, but witnesses and sponsors as well. A staggering 125,000 persons are mentioned in theserecords, and every one of them is cited in the new indexes, which have been painstakinglycompiled especially for this publication. The records themselves answer the usual who, whereand when questions, but because of their magnitude, because of the vast number of people whofigure in these records, they must now be accounted, in the aggregate, as the very basis ofPennsylvania-German genealogy.
