Mr. Cirone is a true pro with an amazing 36 year career; this insight is vital to those who study and play percussion instruments. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for percussionists
This book was a pleasant surprise in many ways.I expected to get just a few tricks of percussion maintenance out of it, but this book is far more detailed than I expected.Bonfoey does talk about proper playing techniques when applicable, like muffling the bass drum, but what impressed me the most with this book was the number of problems he was able to solve without buying new equipment. For instance, page 25 details two ways of repairing a tear in a bass drum head. His section on the cymbal goes over how to repair a cymbal crack (at bell, body or edge), the ideal way of mounting a suspended cymbal, a diagram showing how to tie a cymbal strap, and ways to create a sizzle cymbal. There is even a section on how to repair broken bars on mallet instruments! It becomes very obvious that Bonfoey has extensive experience in all manner of percussion repair and performance. This is a repair book for someone on a budget. There is even an explanation on how to make a gong or tam-tam beater and how to create some exotic percussion instruments like the psaltery or lion's roar.I can't recommend this book enough. ... Product Description
Percussion is an attempt—in the author's words—to make sense of "senseless beating," to grasp how rhythm makes sense in music and society. Both a scholar and a former professional drummer, John Mowitt forges a striking encounter between cultural studies and new musicology that seeks to lay out the "percussive field" through which beating—specifically the backbeat that defines early rock-and-roll—comes to matter for raced, urban subjects.

For Mowitt, percussion is both an experience of embodiment—making contact in and on the skin—and a provocation for critical theory itself. In delimiting the percussive field, he plays drumming off against the musicological account of the beat, the sociological account of shock and the psychoanalytical account of fantasy. In the process he touches on such topics as the separation of slaves and drums in the era of the slave trade, the migration of rural blacks to urban centers of the North, the practice and politics of "rough music," the links between interpellation and possession, the general strike, beating fantasies, and the concept of the "skin ego."

Percussion makes a fresh and provocative contribution to cultural studies, new musicology, the history of the body and critical race theory. It will be of interest to students of cultural studies and critical theory as well as readers with a serious interest in the history of music, rock-and-roll and drumming. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, insightful
This is a really important and unique book in the field of music and its connection to society. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars original and necessary approach
Mowitt explores the heretofore unmentionables within the discourse of music analysis and musicological dimensions. His primary orientation is that the percussive world and any discussion of it has been through social filters,"imported" concepts from academia that not always shares such dimensions of illumination. By introducing such diverse concepts as Althusseur's "interpellation"(cross-referencial disciplines rather than one seminal kernel) and Adorno's theory of the demise of content within an administered world Mowitt finds a wholly unique approach here making sense out of senseless beating. So the "percussive field" is like a special preserve and then treated very much like a pure language to itself. The relative cloistered universe of musical academia has seen little use for such social and political dimensions; whereas Mowitt confronts these cognitive material aspects directly.

He begins with the idea that music in particular percussion music(beating, striking, banging) can be and is/implies a coherent language that is rooted in a "socialness" and has a unique discourse of representation. Percussion music recall has been a special preserve for innovation as the early 1930s works of composer Edgar Varese later John Cage. In fact one can usually determine if a composer, a creator understands timbre strictly from the sensitivity to percussive timbre. It seems to be the last dimension within any musical oeuvre that develops.
Interestingly Mowitt refers to our primordial forms of the aesthetic of tribes beating on their/Our bodies. And there is a wealth of timbre from the body, filled with or unfilled with cavities, resonating "boxes". He is quite well-read and draws many fascinating pathways not only into World music but Popular culture, Chuck Berry. And examines how the "beat, the backbeat as in "Get Off My Cloud" by the Rolling Stones. He seems to imply that the beat has all the necessary language and subversion we often miss.We need to get away from the market tyranny of contemplating music, of placing music into a pre-determined set and serial means of styles and genres. Mowitt, implies that understanding is lost with market formulas. ... Read more

Product Description
This fascinating book presents the history of percussion instruments from the Old Stone Age to the present day. Jeremy Montagu, a performer, historian, and curator of musical instruments, discusses common and uncommon percussion instruments from all parts of the world, tracing their development and use through the ages and across cultures. After exploring the origins and antiquity of percussion instruments, Montagu investigates their appearance in the Middle Ages, in particular the nakers, tabors, cymbals, and triangles that are immediately ancestral to those we use today. He then describes instruments of the Renaissance and Early Baroque, High Baroque (from which we can trace surviving instruments and specific music), Classical, Romantic, and Modern Periods. Montagu follows the development of orchestral and band percussion from the late eighteenth century, moving from the introduction of the "Turkish music" to the modern pop bands, military, marching, and concert bands, and concert and studio orchestras. The book concludes with a wide-ranging survey of world percussion, covering instruments commonly played in schools, colleges, and orchestras. It incorporates appendices on playing techniques, technical matters, and the sociology of drummers, and is abundantly illustrated with rare images. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great basics guide.-
Well, I bought this book about half a year ago:is avery comprensible guide about how to program drum machines (or drum software), from the basics, sounding like a real drum pattern. My original book was stolen (with my laptop). Now I have my second new copy. This book is " a must "that all compumusic man must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars great info
Teaches the process behind drum programing not patterns. Was exactly what I was looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must have
It great reading! good info for the beginner and even for the experienced.
It really is a joy to read and has lots of detail to. Get one if you have the chance.
If you aer not a drummer but you like to program drum patterns in your hardware or software drummachine then this gives you everything you need. Patterns in the book are by the way more rock/pop orientated then dance. But with the basics learned you will know enough to program your own weird drumloops.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Missing Piece Of The DAW Puzzle
Although there are many books available on the various Digital Audio Workstations, most of them just cover the software and assume you'll know things like drum programming. Fortunately this book provides that missing information. I have no musical aptitude and have never gotten anything out of a book on music until I read this one. I had to figure out how to apply its instructions to a specific drum machine, ReDrum in Propellerhead Reason, but other than that it was really easy to understand and I was immensely pleased with the results. I feel like I'm finally making some progress in mastering Propellerhead Reason! Drum programming is easy given some good instructions and you'll find that in this book.

The book itself is fairly short, only 54 pages of actual text with a lot of space taken up by drum tabulatures. It is oversized like a lot of music books. It resembles a song book. But it is cheap enough and thoroughly explains a topic that you won't find covered in most digital music manuals or books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the basics!
My first workstation was the Yamaha SY85, which I regret selling to this day. The drum kits and pre-programmed drum patterns were really nice. Most of the patterns, though very good, would still suggest "canned." So, to learn to build my own patterns, I bought "Drum Programming: a complete guide to program and think like a drummer."

I give this short book a high rating because it did the job. Of course, I went on to develop much more intricate patterns, but this was were I started. The lesson I still hear clearly in my mind is this: The living, breathing drummer has only two hands! The author gives an ample explanation of the different elements of the drum kit. To really keep "the live action" in mind as I'm developing a pattern, I keep an old picture of a Pearl drum kit (an old Export 825 with extras) at my workstation; this helps. All in all, though, if you want your pieces to have a little personality or sound less mechanical, you will need to learn to program patterns; and this, again, is a fair place to start.

Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for accordions, bagpipes, harmonicas, and other non-electronic musical instruments excluding percussion, string and fretted, brass wind, and woodwind musical instruments across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for accordions, bagpipes, harmonicas, and other non-electronic musical instruments excluding percussion, string and fretted, brass wind, and woodwind musical instruments. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more
