Weak.
As another reviewer said, this book gives no insight into the specifics of developing effective performing arts resumes, i.e. the specific challenges, how this type of resume differs from others, etc. Some OK examples, but I expected a much more focused and thorough resource.

Excellent Resource
I'm not sure if Lakewood is reviewing the correct book. It's not generalizing as the Lakewood reviewer says. Maybe in the how to write a resume section, but let's face it, all resumes require the same basic foundations. Whether you're an accountant or a Broadway star. It's samples and examples specifically target Performing Arts fields. I found this book to be an asset to my Musical Theatre career. It's packed full of sample resumes for actors, musicians, instructors and more. It has tips for writing resumes (i.e. what to avoid, how to present it, etc.) and cover letters. About 75% or so of the book is sample resumes and cover letters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to write up a performing arts resume.

Instruction Not Focused on Performance Arts
I found this book confusing and the title deceiving...the first part is very basic "resumes 101" type content (e.g. difference between a chronological and functional resume, action verbs to use, etc.). The book also uses examples like "Regional Sales Manager" and "corporate litigation" within the content as examples. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to use examples utlizing actors, acting,vocal performance, i.e. performance art examples? There is NOTHING in this content about how performance arts resumes are different from traditional resumes or how to develop performance art resumes. This standard content ends at page 37 and then from page 37 to 119 there are performance arts sample resumes and cover letters. It's like they took a resume writing brochure, added a bunch of performance art resumes to the end and published it - which in fact is exactly what they did. ... Read more

Conversations in the middle of the night.....
I enjoyed this book. It was written in a conversational style that made me imagine I was chatting with Art in his studio during commercial breaks. If you are familiar with Art's voice, his on-air personality & the general aura presented on his radio show, this book flows in a familiar way. You know which words or phrases would be vocally highlighted, where a chuckle or a sigh would be heard. You hear the frustration sometimes. The one thing you don't usually hear on the air is a tone of pride because that is not Art's way. On the written page he has rightfully admitted being proud of certain facets of his life & also admitted to quirks & weaknesses. I was surprised that someone who so zealously guards his privacy would be so forthcoming in many areas. C2C listeners are familiar with Art's wife, Ramona, & their feline "Directors of the Board"; a satisfying amount of information about his spouse/friend/lover & adored pets is shared. Last weekend a caller asked where he could find this book & Art told him it was out of print & probably unavailable. I sent an email to Art & told him it was available here on Amazon; on tonight's show a caller gave the same information on the air. It'll be interesting to see how many copies are soon purchased here on Amazon. If Art Bell is someone you would like to know a lot more about then this book will fill in a lot of the background. I wish there was more about Coast To Coast but I guess I can't have it all. I call this a satisfying read & I hope he will someday provide us with an updated version.

Interesting read if you're an Art Bell fan.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I have only discovered Art Bell within the last year or so, unfortunately (wish I had started listening earlier). But I felt compelled to learn more about this fascinating guy.
I have to echo what others have said in that the book isn't edited well, although an editor *claims* in the intro to have worked on this with Bell. If so, I'd have to say she didn't do a very good job of it. The book is written in sort of category-like chapters...sort of an outline of his life and its events. It doesn't flow well. I found it was better just to pick up and start reading anywhere. Things backtrack, repeat themselves, so in reading this way you sort of got the full gist. It seems like Bell just sat down at a computer and started writing, sort of chronologically but not always. I wonder if the editor (supposedly one of his fans) was perhaps intimidated or awed and didn't want to change much? I really don't have any other explanation.
On the other hand, although the writing style wasn't polished,I found this to be rather a good thing at times as it was more conversational and you certainly did feel like you were talking to the man. Art seems to be mostly a simple guy, not into glitz and glamour, so it seemed more "real" and closer to the truth.
Warning...if you are not an Art Bell fan, I'm sure you will be disappointed. Although there is information about talk radio, the bulk of the book is stuff about his life.Which is basically what I wanted to read about anyway.
I would like to see an updated version, since things have changed drastically with Coast To Coast, etc., since this has come out.

Not a great book but...
Art Bell was not a good writer when this book was written.This book reflects this.Lately, having read some of Art Bell's columns in the After Dark Newsletter, his writing has greatly improved.This is the first hurdle you have to jump if you are to enjoy this book.

Another hurdle, you have to be a fan of Art Bell. In this book he discusses some of his personal history, but doesn't go into a lot of detail.He also does not give any tips to people interested in talk radio.

Personally, I loved it.

So, if you're willing to handle substandard writing, lack of depth, and aren't interested in getting into the profession of talk radio, then you will like this book.If you fail to meet these criteria, don't buy this book.If you are interested in conspiracy, UFO's, and weather, by all means buy some of Art's other books, this one does not go into any of that though.This book targets a very small market of people; before you buy, make sure you're in it.

This is Art Bell's first book, and it is his autobiography. Art is theformer host of the worldwide radio programs Coast to Coast AM andDreamland. If I weren't in the radio broadcasting business myself, I wouldprobably say that this is a fascinating story. But, it turned out to bequite what I expected from a fellow broadcaster. Nonetheless, it isinteresting to get to know the man behind the voice that I was soaccustomed to hearing night after night. Virtuosity and Artistry
Anya Peterson Royce was a professional ballerina before becoming an anthropologist. This book is a personal record: thoughts on ballet expand out to experiences with other dance forms, ranging from Kabuki to the dances of the Tewa Pueblos of New Mexico. Then she moves on to classical music and to traditional small-scale cultures' healing rituals; in such cultures, healing is a performance art, since the main thing the curer can really accomplish is psychological support and help posed in dramatic forms.
Where this book stands out is in contrasting virtuosity--sheer technical skill--with true artistry. Royce has given a great deal of thought and attention to the question of what differentiates a great performance from a merely good one (or, worse, a merely slick one). A good dance performance can be perfect in timing, flow, steps, poses, and so on; a music performance can be perfect in timing, pitch, attack, dynamics and so on. A great one is never perfect--not in that way. A great artist adds countless tiny, almost imperceptible variations to bring out the emotional force of the piece. A musician will come in a tiny fraction of a second early on an attack note, and make up for it by coming in a tiny bit late on a later note ("rubato and agogic"). Similar tiny variations will appear in force of attack, tone quality, pitch levels changes, dynamic contours, and all other variables. These changes are not just random; they are all carefully calculated, or more often intuited, to drive the emotion and intensity of the piece. This is what differentiates a merely pleasant performance from a performance that sounds, superficially, the same, but leaves the audience collapsed in their chairs, drenched in sweat and tears. The great artist can then go on and build original creations on the understanding of emotions that emerges from such performance success.
This use of micro-variations seems to be worldwide. The Chinese have about 100 different named ways of playing a single note on the qin (Chinese elite stringed instrument). Blues guitarists have a complex vocabulary for such variations. Effective use of them in the service of really intense emotion is what differentiates Robert Johnson from an ordinary bluesman. Royce plays cello and uses it as one example; I remember once hearing Mischa Schneider coach a friend of mine who is a concert cellist. My friend was playing about as well as I thought possible, but Schneider played the same piece with just a little sharper attack, more rubato-agogic, and so on, and the difference was astounding. Royce's description of working with the great cellist Janos Starker brings out all the things I heard, in much more detail and from much deeper knowledge.
I am glad somebody has finally come out and said this in the anthropological literature. I have seen many pathetic and dismal attempts to define what makes art great (e.g. Robert Jourdain in his otherwise excellent book MUSIC, THE BRAIN, AND ECSTASY; see my Amazon.com review). Now, Royce has provided a good account of one vital key: the performance side of art. Now someone else has to tell us how humanity got from "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" to Beethoven's symphonies.
Some things this book is not: It is not a sustained, brilliant tour-de-force; it is more a set of personal essays. It is not an introduction to anthropology of performance art; Royce assumes the reader already knows that literature. She also assumes great knowledge of elite European dance and music. The book is, alas, also not well edited. Comma faults, missed quote marks, repetition (often word for word), and other problems are distractingly common.
On the other hand, she gets a full extra star for not using, anywhere, such phrases as "inscribed on the body" or "problematizing gender" or "the modernist program," even though she is treating in detail the actual phenomena in question. Such phrases once were valuable, because they referred to exciting new topics. They have long ago become vapid cliches, and should be dropped once and for all from the English language. Also, Royce is far too knowledgeable to think there is a thing, "the body," that has some kind of separate reality that makes it (note that neuter gender) a special topic for study! ... Read more

The Women Are Lacking!!
The title is intriguing and even more intriguing is that there are some ladies that are rarely written about. Those ladies include Eleanor Parker, Alexis Smith, Andrea King, Nancy Coleman, Priscilla Lane, Glenda Farrell and Joan Leslie. But this is an expensive book that lacks good pictures of the ladies and almost nothing new about the ones that have previously been written about. The Warners ladies missing include Patricia Neal, Ruth Roman, Janis Paige, Faye Emerson, Dorothy Malone, Virginia Mayo and a whole lot more.

Each lady is given one picture (in some cases not even a good picture) with the exception of Ann Sheridan, who rates three photos. The stories of their careers rarely flesh out their lives away from the camera. There is very little about them after their film careers ended. I never got a feel for what each lady was really like other than "she worked with (so and so) and liked (so and so) and her favorite movie was (so and so)", etc.

The filmography for each lady includes a little bit of TV work. It would seem that if the author is going to name TV credits, then why not all the work the lady has done, not just a scattering of titles. It's interesting that Andrea King is included when she only was at the WB studio for 18 months and others who worked for the Warner Brothers for many years are left out.

This book is lacking in so many areas--a major disappointment. There is no in-depth story of any of these fifteen WB ladies. I guess it's better than nothing, but not nearly as good as it could have been.

A mixed bag, alas
It's hard to take too seriously a book of this title that includes Nancy Coleman but not the actress whose early '30s work for Warners (Three on a Match, Strange Love of Molly Louvain, etc.) is among that studio's best, Ann Dvorak. Clearly an effort by the author to remind us of the existence of these talented, spirited stars at a time when cultural memory threatens to forget them, The Women of Warner Brothers covers the 1930s and '40s and includes such well-known stars as Olivia de Havilland and Ann Sheridan, along with lesser lights such as Glenda Farrell and Andrea King.

The writing is workmanlike, if sometimes too casual in the manner of movie zines (starting a sentence with "Oh yeah" may not endear the author to all of his readers). There's nothing particularly new here, but the book is useful as a one-stop source for longer profiles of its subjects and their films than can be found elsewhere (excluding stars like Bette Davis whose careers have been written up in exhaustive detail). And the lack of Dvorak is at least partially compensated for by the inclusion of such vanishing worthies as Joan Leslie, Andrea King, Eleanor Parker, and Alexis Smith. Fans of these actresses will find this a diverting read.

Entertaining Look at Classic Leading Ladies
Daniel Bubbeo has written an entertaining and informative look at the classic actresses who made Warner Brothers. Bubbeo has an easy prose that invties the reader to learn about this wonderful time in cinema history. This is an invaluable book for anyone interested in classic films as well as the history of the Warner Bros. Studio.

Well- written and well-researched book on classic actresses
The book is well-written and well-researched. It presents entertaining chapters on 15 leading WB actresses from the 30s and 40s. I learned about stars I was previously not familiar with like Nancy Coleman. The book presents interesting information not previously published about many of these stars. I would have liked to see the chapters on each actress be somewhat longer. Some of the more interesting aspects of the actresses' lives could have been more fully developed, especially their private lives as opposed to their film careers. Instead, "snippets" are presented in some cases. I would have liked to see more about the lives of the stars in their later years. This is a truly remarkable series of books for anyone interested in the final "whatever happened to" for celebrities.Lentz does a great job at noting the deaths of just about everyone you could think of thatwere involved in films, television, etc. during the course of each year. A Great Listing of Miss Moorehead's considerable credits
Lynn Kear's "Agnes Moorehead: A Bio-Bibliography" is a superb reference book.Written in a time before the internet she was able through exhaustive research to compile an incredible listing of Miss Moorehead's considerable credits on stage, screen, radio and television.She also includes synopses of most of these performances along with contemporary reviews.The Biography section is limited (as was expected with this type of book in the series) but includes many interesting nuggets which at that time was not known to many Moorehead fans.Credit Kear for discovering, too, what Agnes' true birth year was--up to that time most people took Agnes at her word that she born in 1906, but Miss Kear came up with the truth. As a fellow writer and biographer of Agnes Moorehead (I Love the Illusion: The Life and Career of Agnes Moorehead) I found this book to be a godsend.

Good, but could have been better
Kear has done fairly well over all, but several of her reference sections are incomplete.Also, she seems to go out of her way to print reviews of Miss Moorehead's films/TV appearances that are negative and in some casesdownright insulting.My overall impression is that Kear, as she did herresearch, began (for whatever reason) to dislike Miss Moorehead.In spiteof these glaring and obvious flaws, there is some good information here, Ijust wish it had been put together by someone with a little more repect andadmiration for her esteemed subject. ...
