Chapters: Drama Schools in China, Performing Arts Education in Hong Kong, Peking Opera School, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Central Academy of Drama, Shanghai Theater Academy. Excerpt: The Peking Opera Schools were boarding schools located throughout Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, specialising in teaching Peking opera. The most well known of these schools are those that were based in Hong Kong during the 1950s and 60s, as many of the attending students subsequently embarked on successful careers in the Hong Kong film industry. In learning Peking opera, attending students developed skills in martial arts, acrobatics and tumbling, music and dance and performed these skills for audiences. The schools produced a generation of stunt performers, action choreographers, actors and film directors including some of the most famous stars of Hong Kong action cinema. Public interest in Peking Opera waned in the late 1960s and several of the schools were closed. Historically, pupils had been handpicked at a young age by a teacher (or sifu) and trained for a period of seven to ten years, on contract from their parents. As the teacher provided food and accommodation for the pupils during this period, they accrued a debt to the teacher that was later repaid through performance earnings. After 1911, training took place in more formally organised schools. Typically, students at these schools rose at five o'clock in the morning for exercises. The daytime would be spent learning the skills of acting and combat, and the senior students would perform in outside theatres in the evenings. If they made any mistakes during such performances, it was not uncommon for the entire group to be beaten with bamboo canes. Schools with less harsh training meth... Excerpt: School for Creative and Performing Arts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Bill Dickinson (left) and Dr. Donald Waldrip at a Cincinnati Boy Choir performance on Fountain Square, c. 1974. Dickinson led the school from its founding in 1973 until 1991.The School for Creative and Performing Arts arose, in part, as a response to the recurring desegregation battles in the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In a 1965 civil rights suit, the city had prevailed when a federal judge had found that the schools were not intentionally segregated, but rather that "the racial composition of each school is simply a result of the racial composition of the neighborhoods which they serve." By 1971, Cincinnati's neighborhoods and schools had grown more segregated and the Supreme Court of the United States had upheld forced busing as a remedy for school segregation in other cities. Desiring to avoid such drastic remedies for Cincinnati, then newly appointed Superintendent Dr. Donald Waldrip pushed forward a program of alternative schools (or what would later be called magnet schools), "designed to calm the desires of parents for academic choice and to stem the demands of federal judges for court-ordered desegregation." The theory behind alternative schools was open enrollment: students could attend any alternative school they chose at no additional cost, so long as an even racial balance at the new school was maintained. "Students were admitted to these programs on a one-for-one basis (one white for one black) so far as possible." The School for Creative and Performing Arts was to become the first alternative school in what would become "one of the largest and most vigorous" magnet programs in the country. In 1965, Robert McSpadde... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25456621 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Kid-Friendly, Teacher-Friendly
I'm a high school theatre teacher with only limited experience working with middle school kids. I adore this book. It is not the "teacher's edition" of a student text. It is an all-in-one resource providing inspiration and expert guidance for teachers.

This book is comprehensive: chapters on games and warm-ups, movement activities, basics of acting skills, improv techniques, playwrighting, glossary of performing arts vocabulary, use of music and sound in live performance, site-specific projects (!), world theatre, and advice regarding the rehearsal process. Lovely illustrations and an intelligent, clean layout.

I suppose the thing I treasure most about this book is I can that peruse it slowly over a vacation to expose myself to general aesthetic and pedagogical approaches OR I can turn to a little two page spread on a specific topic and bang together a quick lesson plan.

With more and more middle school teachers are being called on to wear multiple hats, books like this are invaluable.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Delhi, Bharatiya Natya Sangh (BNS) with assistance from UNESCO, independently established the 'Asian Theatre Institute' (ATI) in January 20, 1958, and in July 1958, ATI was taken over by the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA), Indias National Academy of Music, dance and drama of Government of India.
