Product Description
Provides an analysis of the impact of agricultural policy and pesticide policy on the quantity and manner of pesticide use and the resulting environmental impacts. It is based on a series of studies written by the major experts in the field for the OECD's Joint Working Party of the Commitee on Agriculture and the Environmental Policy Committee, including country case studies from Australia, France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. On the basis of best practice, in-depth policy analysis, and likely future trends, a series of suggestions for policy improvements are provided. While the need to continue and improve the regulation of pesticides is recognized, these suggestions include also the reduction of financial incentives that lead to increased pesticide use, the improvement of information gathering, the consideration of new developments in application equipment, information technology, and bioengineering, the strengthening of regulation and approval processes through more differentiated procedures, and the application of market-based approaches (ecolabeling or the certification of pesticide consultants) where possible. ... Description:
The following paper describes a new, easier to use approach to the calculation of relative risk levels of alternative pesticides. An insect, a plant disease, and a weed were selected for describing the application procedure of a new ranking method that is based on the intrinsic properties of pesticides rather than on the processes that occur both on land and in water after they are applied to soil. The approach is based on the Toxicity-Human health-Persistency (THP) Hazard Rating System, and a consumption factor is added to the method in order to calculate the environmental risk of pesticides. The available substitute pesticides are ranked in terms of their relative risk levels from lowest to highest in order of magnitude difference. Such a ranking method may be used as a practical quantitative tool to generate significant findings aiding in the selection of the most environmentally friendly substitute against a certain pest, especially in developing countries that still face the misuse and/or unconscious use of pesticides. ... Description:
Remote sensing technology offers an opportunity to significantly increase the amount of site-specific information about field characteristics such as pest populations. Coupled with variable rate application technologies, this added information has the potential to provide environmental benefits through reduced pesticide applications. However, producers face a complicated adoption decision because output prices and crop yields are uncertain. A model is developed to examine the potential value of remote sensing information to pesticide applications in an option-value framework under uncertainty. Simulations suggest that remote sensing information could decrease pesticide use, but uncertainty and irreversibility are likely to limit technological adoption by farmers. Potential cost-share subsidies are discussed. ... Read more

Description:
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured in the atmosphere over the period January 2000-May 2001 at six locations as part of New Jersey Atmospheric Deposition Network (NJADN). Gas phase, particle phase and precipitation concentrations of 22 OCP species, including chlordanes, DDTs, HCHs, endosulfan I and II, aldrin and diedrin, were measured. OCPs are found predominantly in the gas phase in all seasons, representing over 95% of the total air concentrations. Most of the pesticides measured display highest concentrations at urban sites (Camden and New Brunswick), although in many cases the differences in geometric mean concentrations are not statistically significant. The relationship of gas-phase partial pressure with temperature was examined using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation; significant temperature dependencies were found for all OCPs, except aldrin. Atmospheric depositional fluxes (gas absorption into water+dry particle deposition+wet deposition) to the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary of selected OCPs were estimated at NJADN sites. Atmospheric concentrations of dieldrin, aldrin and the HCHs are similar to those measured by the Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network (IADN) in the Great Lake Region. In contrast, concentrations of DDTs, chlordanes and heptachlor are higher in the Mid-Atlantic compared to the Great Lakes, suggesting that the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary receives higher fluxes of these chemicals than the Great Lakes. ... Product Description
This book integrates research findings from several fields which focus on the interaction of pesticides with entomophagous arthropods. Emphasis is on those characteristics that make natural enemies unique in their responses to chemical toxins. It surveys the history of research in the field and discusses susceptibility assessment, lethal, sublethal and ecological effects of pesticides and selectivity, resistance and resistance management. The author's approach is to promote conservation of natural enemies through proper use of physiologically selective pesticides. ... Read more
