This book is out dated and is clearly not for "pet" parrots. Instead get...

Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot - by Mattie Sue Athan
The Complete Bird Owner's Handbook - by Gary A. Gallerstien, D.V.M.
Companion Parrot Handbook - by Sally Blanchard
Guide to Companion Bird Behavior - by Mattie Sue Athan

In my opinion these books are the best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Old, INCORRECT information
This book was the the first book that I purchased when I began researching getting my first bird.As my knowledge grew I learned that most, if not all of the information in this "new" book was VERY out of date. When this book was written we were still catching birds in the rainforest, feeding them only seed and water, and not understanding their basic emotional, dietary and medical needs. There are many wonderful books out there that help you choose, and raise the right parrot species for your lifestyle - this is not one of them.Check the copywrite date.Anything written before 1992 (when we stopped importing and started really hand raising and learning what our feathered companions need) is probably out of date and is only good for the pictures.

Please, for the sake of your future companion, get a book written recently, with up to date information, or find a breeder to ask what to read.Do your research first, but make sure that it good research.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still not the worst. Inexpensive.
This book showed a lot of promise when I bought it, but after the firstfew pages it was appearant that this was a book written for Europeancollectors, not American breeders or pet owners. Diet recommendations arepossibly harmful, as are some of the training tips. I was hoping for muchmore from this nicely presented book, but got one collectors opinion andsome poor photos. If nothing else is available, this is a start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a Complete Manual for Beginners
When we rescued an escaped Parakeet from certain death (she'd spent several nights in sub-zero temps) we knew that we could not keep her.We have 7 cats!My husband's parents agreed to keep her, but knew only about caring for cockatiels.Since they are in their 80's, we wanted to make certain that they knew the ins and outs of parakeet care. This book, while short, is packed full of all the information you may need to know about parakeet care - from the basics of feeding and cage care, to breeding and creating your own flock. It is obvious that the author is quite smitten by parakeets, and tends to refer to them at times almost as if they are people.Yes, each and every animal has their own personality and endearing charms, and birds are certainly in this category. What we found most interesting was her insight into the flock mentality, and how important it is to either BE the bird's flock, or have more than one bird.To leave a parakeet alone for many hours during the day, with contact from no one, is to condemn the bird to misery.Once reading this, we ran out and bought our rescued bird a mate.Since introducing them to each other, they are inseparable. Our parents read the book thoroughly, and changed or adapted the cage, the feeding and the socializing of their birds accordingly.Since they don't care to allow the birds to fly through the house, finger taming isn't going well! The book recommends that all parakeets be allowed to fly and to explore their environments. The book gives exact instructions for "bird-proofing" the home so that the naturally curious birds do not fall into things, eat things, or generally hurt themselves. The author has thought of everything. We highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of having parakeets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parakeets (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
I had thought that I knew a lot about the care and feeding of parakeets, this book showed me much more.

2-0 out of 5 stars informative but not complete
Some of the information is great, but it still left me with questions. So the title "A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" is misleading.
It does have good information on diet and health and exercise.
But it seems like an overview. But I was looking for more than an overview. The title should be "Parakeets, an overview for the new owner" More details please!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parakeets A Complete Pet Owner's Manual
I LOVE this BOOK! It is quite informative.I do wish to obtain additional books on parakeets.

I wish these books had been around when I was growing up!i LOVE these animals.Their so cretive and unique in their own little ways thought they really are n ot small at all!
Thanak you.

3-0 out of 5 stars An educational manual
Authored by Annette Wolter, this manual on parakeets was published in 1999.There are 87 pages.Eight chapters are contained.Numerous color photos and black-and-white drawings are provided. Also, an index is included. The anecdotes the author supplies are informative.Examples of topics covered are tips on purchasing, bathing, care, toys, diet, health, breeding, cages, taming, teaching the parakeet how to talk, intelligence, and behavior.I find the chapter focusing on behavior to be instructive and fascinating. In addition, two tables are displayed; one deals with dangers to the parakeet, while the other deals with health problems. The color photos of the parakeets are pleasing. As for the black-and-white drawings, they are impressive and educational.I recommend this manual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Ideas!
This book is written by vegetarians who have no idea what a "healthy" diet is. I, myself, am a vegetarian, and wouldn't consider any of the recipes in this book to be healthy for a parrot OR a human to eat on a regular basis. Occasionally, in moderation, or as a special training treat, some of these items are okay.

Loads of dairy products (which do more harm than good to all of us) and loads of saturated (and unsaturated) fat, sugar, oils, etc. Yuck!

This book is also full of outright misinformation. For example, the author states that birds have a "palate nearly as sophistocated as that of a human." Humans have an average of 10,000 taste buds. Parrots have, on average, 400-500. I wouldn't call that similar at all!

Much of this book's pages are filled with anecdotes and stories which would be better suited to one of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books rather than a recipe book for birds. The authors have no formal (or informal) education in behavior, nutrition (human, parrot, or otherwise), veterinary care, or animal husbandry; this book is based entirely on their opinions and personal experiences.

While the recipes are flexible and you can easily substitute a healthier ingredient for a less healthy one, this book is not appropriate for people who are new to bird keeping and who have no knowledge of nutrition in general (and species-specific nutrition, in particular - remember, unlike cats and dogs, which are comprised of multiple breeds within their species, parrots and birds are actually different species of animals.) Different species have different vitamin, mineral, carbohydrate, protein, and fat requirements, and the recipes in this book aren't appropriate for many species without adding, subtracting, or substituting ingredients.

1-0 out of 5 stars IS NOT SUITABLE FOR PARROTS AFTER ALL
Gourmet Bird Food Recipes: IS NOT SUITABLE FOR PARROTS AFTER ALL

Quotation out of the book:
'No one knows exactly what a well balanced diet for a bird is, but experts are coming closer to understand....'

My appraisal is:
.... that gratiné, the use of butter and salt like in penne in cream sauce, the reccomended Italian dressing, or garlic butter is miles away from a healthy diet for parrots. And I never provide a sort of these suggested menues to my fosterlings. I even must say, that these recipes are unhealthy - possibly even noxious. Oh dear!

Not recommended at all!

If your intention is to cook for your bird 'Healthy Bird Cookbook' by Robin Deutsch is a good reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cookbook for Bird Lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for Beginners
I recommend this product to anyone who wants to get started with birdwatching. It's a "cheat sheet" that show only the most common birds and how to identify them. Once you have these memorized, you can move on to books. It's a very manageable place to start without overwhelming the beginner with too much information. It's also a convenient size to carry with you on the trail (unlike heavy books.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed!!!!!
For the price of this I thought this would give some backround on some of the birds in my area...but didn't find any....the pics are somewhat ok.Would not recommend this. Was very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the backyard bird-watcher.
This wonderful little resource contains pictures of over 100 birds commonly found in the Midwest of the United States, including field birds, water birds, and all others. Included are pictures of males, females, and adolescents, when they have different coloring. The book itself takes the form of twelve cards; all laminated together, that fold up like a map. As such, it is easy to open and reference, quick to fold up, and protected so that it can be left out.

This is one of the best purchases I have made in a while. I keep the thing under my kitchen window, and at the appearance of a bird, I can identify it quicker than lightning. This has come in quite handy, allowing me to identify birds quickly. If you ever put out food for wild birds, then this item is for you. ... Read more

Despite thatit features only budgerigars, it shows the basic steps in keeping these lovely and beautiful birds and these steps can be applied to other kinds of birds, like canaries. Although the book ismeant for 9-12 years old, I feel that it is also good for adults new to thehobby. Overall, I rate this book 5 stars. I am even considering buyingothers books in this series.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY -- WORTHLESS TRASH !!!
What a waste of money!!!This book was written for idiots who believe that birds can talk like humans. There's very little writing, and it is poor. This isn't even a children's book.It is written more for an adult who has been in a terrible accident and has severe brain damage. The photos are mundane.Thisbook has no redeeming qualities, and I threw it right into the trash room.It wasn't even worth donating to a library; I'm sure they would have done the same thing with it.Any positive reviews about this book were probably paid for by the author.Unbelievable.This takes the cake as one of the worst books I have ever purchased.Learn from my mistake!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Birds in My Life
Fabulous book with beautiful stories and photos.

I suggest that everyone should have one copy.It reminding us that human being shoul live in a harmony life with our in-cohabitants.

Let live and be lived.

Thankyou Supreme Master Ching Hai for sharing the touching stories.

1-0 out of 5 stars Man, I really wish this WAS a joke...
When my sister first handed me this book, I thought it was another parody book, and after reading one poem, I was convinced it was.
However, as my sister explained, and I continued reading, I realized the sad truth that this book is just a collection of poorly (very strong emphasis on "poorly") photographed and often photoshopped pictures of this "Master's" birds. My sister got it for me naturally for the humor in it.
Its pretty clear that most, if not all, of the 96 5* reviews are by the same person.

As for the author, the book would be so terrible if she wasn't so full ofherself. Her idea is clear, she wants to bring enlightenment through belief in god, and closeness to animals. However, she presents herself as being so enlightened and perfect, that she actually alludes to herself as being unto god. Now, I'm very not religious, but I'm pretty sure you're never supposed to do that.
Furthermore, even though she's the only credited writer, never is she referred to from the first person. She is only "The Master."

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid
More like a photo album created by an airhead who seems to be suck on herself. master of What?

1-0 out of 5 stars Master of blithering nonsense...
Amateurish snapshots of family pets, with even worse computer alterations.

Text is two or three sentences per page of airhead burblings in bad English.

False 5-star ratings repeatedly submitted to deceive and raise rating average.

Ordered it used for very cheap. Glad I didn't pay full price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite good
I have three popular field guides and a new photographic one. The National Geographic is the one I always take into the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I really like this book, it's simple to use, has beautifully colored pictures, and lots of information on the birds listed.Since I have gotten the book I have identifed birds in my area that I have been seeing for years but never knew what they were. It' also an easy book to take along and we have done so on some of trips out of the area and identified many types of birds. We will continue to take it along on all major outing and vacations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nat Geo Birds
Good book, great color but needs more detailed information in it. Seller sent book in a timly fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best field guides
I have the Audubon Society field guide that has photos of all the birds in it, which is also a great book. I didn't think I needed another one with just drawings of the birds, but on an outing with some friends who had the Nat Geo guide, I found it useful. So I bought this one, and now it's the one I always keep with me. The drawings and identification tips are really helpful, as are the extra pages such as the collection of ducks in flight for comparison, and the quick find front cover guide. My favorite field guide so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars best in class
We have used the National Geographic guides with great success.Although I prefer photgraphs, or thought I did, the drawings are done so well that they are actually easier to use than most photographs. If you are looking to ID birds (as opposed to learning about their behavior - for which the Stokes books are unparalleled) this is the book to get.The "songs" seem very accurate phoenetically, as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best dove book I found on Amazon
This is the most comprehensive dove book I found here on Amazon. Contains good information about many subjects including illnesses and treatments unlike the other books. If you have doves then I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book For Raising Doves/Pigeons
I bought this book, and it's sister book Pigeons, the day after I was given an orphan day-old pigeon chick to raise way back in 1997. Normaly I deal with domestic birds (bantams, budgies, ect.) so when my Pidgie came to me, I knew the basics, but I also knew I didn't know enough about pigeons to raise him on my own. These 2 books were all I needed, they provide all the info needed to raise happy healthy pigeond and doves from chick to adult. I am so glad these 2 German classics had been translated and reprinted into English, I don't know what I would have done without them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doves
This book is great.I looked for the information in this book all over the place for months. This book has absolutely everything you need or would want to know about being a dove owner. This book should be in every dove owner's book collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Domesticated Ringneck Doves
There is not enough information given on the domesticated Ringneck Dove. The book emphasizes too much on avaries and wild dove behavior and husbandry. It actually states that keeping a Dove in a cage is not a good idea when the Ringneck is a very good cage bird--but they do have specific husbandry requirements that need to be addressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on doves I have found
As a dove owner,I have found this book to be a very clear treatment of dove species, behavior, and health needs. The pictures are interesting and the information provided is far superior to other books on doves that I have read.My only complaint is that more information could be provided on nutrition, but since most dove are such easy keepers (mostly eating seed, millet spray, whole wheat bread, vegetables, and grit) the information on this need not be extensive.I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering adding a dove to their household. ... Product Description

Birds are so common in everyday life that most people take them for granted, viewing them as nothing more than colorful diversions. Bird Signs shows a different and deeper side of our avian friends. The book presents birds as gateways to self-knowledge. According to author G. G. Carbone, birds are symbols that can help us reflect on events, make nurturing decisions, and focus on spiritual growth. Particular birds exemplify characteristics that seekers can find, or search for, in themselves— examples include the flamingo’s balance and the chickadee’s playfulness. Divided into sections of Bird Traits, Bird Wisdom, Broken Wing, Bird Vision, and Bird Lore, the book contains a wealth of cultural and historical facts, along with guided meditations that incorporate chakras, yoga poses, and visualization. The colorful divination deck contains 52 cards that can be used individually or as daily or weekly card spreads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Oracle
As a professional, Intuitive reader I'm always on the lookout for new decks that will allow me to connect with my clients. Some people who've never been for a reading can be nervous and fearful. When I saw a deck filled with beautiful birds I thought this might be the perfect deck for those individuals to be introduced to psychic readings. I used this oracle recently to read for a group of Health Care professionals, most of them nurses. The results were amazing.I was doing mostly higher-self and Angel readings with the deck, and of the 10 readings I did everyone not only loved the reading, they loved the cards!I love the artwork on these cards.I admit I haven't read the book, however I can tell you that this is a powerful system and you won't be disappointed if you purchase the deck.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bird Signs Cards and Book
Thought these cards were nice but very simple. The book gives you a lot of information about birds but I found as far as guidance and a personal tarot reading it wasn't the best. The pictures are very nice though.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for mother's day
I gave this as a gift for my mother and we bought a copy for ourselves. We use the Animal Medicine Cards each morning and find these a nice adjunct to the Animal Cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Representation of our Feathered Friends!
I highly recommend this book and card set. G.G. Carbone did an excellent job of describing each one of these different birds. The representation of them was phenomenal. I am very metaphysical, and I feel these were fabulous. I also thought they gave good insight about each bird species from a Wild standpoint too( Out in Nature). I was very pleased with this Set of cards. I have worked with animals very closely all of my life, and I share my life with a Macaw parrot.( Her Card hit right on with the Parrot.) She described what each bird pretty much has shown me in my lifetime. I am so happy that I have these in my collection. Thanks G.G. I will cherish this Deck forever.

The artwork is also Esquisite. Well worth the purchase for the artwork also. I especially love the Peacock. Great CARDS!

I give these cards a great recommendation. I Love them!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an excellent pick for any new age collection or card reader.

Unfortunately, I can not give the item a review based on its quality because it still hasn't arrived more than a month after my order.I understand that I have an APO address, but nothing I have ever ordered (and I do a lot of on-line shopping) has ever taken this long.Hopefully others who buy from this seller won't have the same issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buena informacion.
A mi parecer contiene informacion muy util para novatos como yo. Sobre todo es que no hay casi informacion sobre los Forpus en la red. Hay una seccion sobre otras especies que no es muy logica a mi parecer en este libro, pero en linea general me ha gustado.

Very good information for nobels like me. What i did not understand, is why the litle information about other parrots. But in general a good book

Product Description

Behavior problems are the top reasons bird owners cite for giving up their pets. Birds are unique pets in that they are neither fully domesticated (like a dog or a cat) nor entirely hands-off (like a lizard or fish). Caring for them properly is therefore a greater challenge and behavior problems are common. No other bird or parrot training book is as straightforward and solutions oriented as this book. Problems and solutions are discussed holistically so that all contributing factors can be understood and better results achieved. This book emphasizes a positive, loving relationship between bird and owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your parrot is not as crazy as you think...
... and Nikki Moustaki can prove it! As I was reading, I kept telling myself "it's like she's been living with my Blue and Gold macaw for the past six months!" I have had my parrot for almost ten years now, and I learned a lot. I am usually not an avid reader, but I must confess I went through this book in just a few hours!! It is obvious that the author knows what she is talking about, yet she avoids that "condescending attitude"that nobody needs when they struggle with a pet bird. Instead, she goes out of her way to explain the bare facts. And she does so in such a practical way that the reader can actually relate to what she is explaining, and put it to work! Grrreat book for anyone faced with an apparently "outta control bird"! An even better book for anybody thinking of buying a parrot. Parrots are long-lived creatures and people should know what they are getting themselves into...! Shame on pet stores who fail to educate their customers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
A friend of mine has a parrot and was having alot of behavorial issues, as biting and loud squaking.I purchased this book for my friend and she applied the suggestions, it offered.Since then she has a much happier, better behaved pet.. I highly recomment this book, it is easy reading, and even I found it quite interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars No more biting & screaming
I have read many bird books, and this is the best.My green wing macaw is twenty years old.I wish I had this book many years before.I was giving mixed messages to my bird, and did not have a clue what he wanted, and did not understand hormone change affected behavior. He was receiving too much light and not enough sleep. My vet told me that unusual snow accumulations can cause hormore changes just like the sun and bright daylight. I hope that the author expands information to outside people influences and not just the bird owner; i.e., birds are scared if a person with alcohol on their breath comes near them.At family holidays, I choose one older child to guard the bird from other children teasing the bird and sticking things into his cage.Sometimes behavior problems come from the environment that the owner is not aware of those issues. An example would be one family person went around sharing their fear by saying "don't get close to him, he thinks your finger is a french fry and will bite it off."

5-0 out of 5 stars Like an avian mind meld ... aka Mr Spock
This books gives you a way of relating to issues with birds... biting, screaming, feather plucking and many more. You'll gain a perspective from a pet birds point of view ... and be able to translate what it cannot say in human words to make it's life (and yours) much happier.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Without a doubt one of the BEST books I've read on birds! Informative and fun to read. Helps to understand the way birds think. Truly sound advice on how to remedy behavioral problems and/or heading them off before they start. Great for all around advice including dietary needs, cage placement as it relates to behavior, when to consult an avian veterinarian (including how to find an avian veterinarian), flock behavior, etc. A must read for all bird owners~!! A BIG two thumbs up~!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Trivia stockpile
This is a fun little volume that is truly a trivia-lovers dream. The book is a good medium size and slim 160 pgs including the index. The whole book is organized in what I would call a scrap-book style with lots of photos, illustrations and meant to look like something more than just a purchased book (paperclips and the like worked into the page design. This overall feel is very fun and nice to look at. The information is presented in short paragraph and list form as per the overall design, and covers the broad spectrum from natural history tidbits to popular culture so long as a bird is involved. Overall you're sure to find something that you didn't know and would make a great gift for any bird lover although it might go over better with a younger audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars by Gail Blazek
I found the book to be fasinating and very informative.I find myself referring to "Amazing Birds" when I see a bird I do not recognize or when I am adding another bird feeder or bird house to my property.Did you know that bird houses should face a certain direction? The placement of the colorful pictures throughout this book is unique.Keep the book nearby as you will refer to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and beautiful
This is an informative and beautiful book, full of fascinating facts about birds and so visually appealing that it is appropriate for a coffee table. Clearly, the goal is to be accessible without sacrificing good science. I find myself going back to it every time I see a bird doing something interesting in my yard.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for All Ages!
I have always been a big fan of Barron's books (publishers of the popular Eyewitness series) and Amazing Birds does not disappoint! The colorful, clear photographs and drawings are a big part of the book's appeal and the fun, interesting factoids have you learning something new on every page. Dr. Lederer has come up with a truly unique format for sharing his interest and fascination with the avian world with everyone, child to adult. This book is the perfect gift for any bird or nature lover, even those who may already have a library of birding books.
