Amazon.com Review
Thomas Lyon's splendid anthology offers a powerful synthesis of American ideas on nature, along with a first-rate set of essays of his own on the history of United States naturalism. These essays are alone worth the price of the book; so is Lyon's detailed chronology of events in the natural history of the continent. The anthology proper begins with an excerpt from William Wood's New England's Prospect (1634), a properly awed account of "the kingly lion and the strong-armed bear," moves on to great but little-known naturalist-explorers like William Bartram, John James Audubon, and Thomas Nuttall, and ends with modern giants like Aldo Leopold and Edward Abbey. Lyon's enterprise and unfailing good taste has yielded not only a model of literary selection and commentary, but a book that celebrates the best of the North American continent and what there is to protect. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Incomperable Book....
One .."need not know how to name all the oaks or the moths, or be able to recognize a synclinal fault, or tell time by the stars, in order to possess Nature. [S]he may have his mind solely on growing larkspurs, or [s]he may love a boat and a sail and a blue-eyed day at sea. [S]he may have a bent for making paths or banding birds, or [s]he may only be an inveterate and curious walker..."from the preface of THIS INCOMPERABLE LAND.

I've been reading Thoreau this morning, and decided to find the hard cover edition of this book, so I'm off to the Z-shops, but before I go, I wanted to write a review because I see no one else has, and I don't want to be the only one who knows about this wonderful book.

I'm a naturalist by avocation, and I like reading the writings of other naturalists--people more accomplished than me or people like me who simply love all things natural. If you're a member of either group, you will love this collection of essays.

The book contains stories by the finest America naturalists including: John James Audubon, Liberty Hyde Bailey, John Burroughs, Rachel Carson, Annie Dillard, and Henry David Thoreau. Essays range in time from the 1600s in New England. "Of the Beasts That Live on the Land" (William Wood), to the 1700s in North Carolina "Travels in North and South Carolina..." (William Bartram), to the ramblings of Audubon in the 1800s in "The Great Pine Swamp."Henry David Thoreau's "Walking" is reproduced from THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY, June 1962, and John Muir's "The Water-Ouzel" from THE MOUNTAINS OF CALIFORNIA in 1894 is included.

Every part of the U.S. and every period since the settlement of the first English colony is covered in almost 500 pages. This is a wonderful book of American nature writing by some of America's finest writers. ... Read more

Product Description
Current environmental catastrophes and concerns have been accompanied by an explosion of information about the environment. The concerned citizen, whether a business professional, student, homemaker, government employee, educator, or union member, needs access to this information, but may feel overwhelmed by the bewildering array of material available. This annotated bibliography guides readers through the vast amount of information about the environment currently available. It answers questions about usefulness, subject matter and approach of environmental literature. More than 800 entries on books and popular magazine articles found in most public libraries list standard bibliographic information and its scope, organisation and bias. Notations mention whether tables, figures, graphs, glossaries, reference lists or summaries are particularly noteworthy. The overall scientific level of the work is also addressed. Focus is on timely and informative books and articles that are readily available and understandable to the general public.Subjects covered include overpopulation, air pollution, acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, the greenhouse effect, water pollution, toxic waste, energy and resource depletion, pesticides, food additives and other chemicals, land mismanagement, noise pollution, visual pollution, pollution of outer space and health problems in the environment, as well as practical suggestions for improving the environment. ... Product Description
The latest edition of the Geological Time Table provides students of earth history and professional geologists/paleontologists with a succinct survey of chronostratigraphic names encountered in literature. The chart is colourful and attractive, and packed with practical, up-to-date information.

Among its many valuable features, the user will find: international correlation of chronostratigraphic units worldwide (both local and regional units are correlated to standard international units according to the most recent and up to date information); major orogenic events tied to the chronostratigraphic scale and updated; major biotic evolutionary events (including hominid events) and major oceanographic/paleogeographic events.

Six paleocirculation maps make the chart more useful for teaching purposes. No specific stratigraphic school of thought prevails. Rather than following a dogmatic approach, the chart lists both the general and local/regional stratigraphic terms, as well as those names that are generally considered obsolete or terminologically incorrect but which, nevertheless, still occur frequently in the literature.

For those familiar with earlier versions of the chart, new features of this fourth edition include:
• Expansion of the geomagnetic data
• Addition of palaeoceanographic reconstructions
• Addition of major biological events
• Addition of major oceanographical events
• Incorporation of regional classification of China.

The Geological Time Table is a must for students of earth history, practising geologists, archaeologists, climatologists, and should find a place in all geological institutions, universities, museums, schools, and oil exploration companies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible Resource for Christmas Music Buffs!
Goldmine's Neely has once again produced a gem of a book, this time focusing on the oft-neglected niche of Christmas music. Well documented, with lots of color glossy pages of rare album covers, this is a must-have for those of you addicted to holiday vinyl.
The book's only shortcomings: (1) It has now been almost seven years since its publication, it would be nice if Goldmine would issue an updated version of the book every few years to update its content; and (2) the book contains few international titles, of which there are hundreds if not thousands, particularly from the Western European countries (where most of our modern-day Christmas celebration traditions originated!). It would be nice to see more of them incorporated into a future edition.
Well organized and written by someone who obviously is passionate about the genre, I highly recommend this publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Bible Of Christmas Music
Even during the off season I find myself thumbing through this book, it'sa great source of information on collecting rare, hard to find holidayrecords.Plenty of singles and albums are listed that are worth hundredsof dollars if they're in mint condition and have a picture sleeve cover. It is also fun to look up the names of favorite artists & groups to seewhat, if any, holiday tunes they may have recorded. So next time you'recleaning out your attic, basement or in back of your closet, if you comeacross an old box or bin of 45s and/or albums-poke through, you never knowif some hidden treasure is in there, and not just Christmas music either! Tim Neely has a few Goldmine Collectors guides out there and all are tops. Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Guide For Collecting Christmas Music
If you are into collecting Christmas Music of every variety whethertraditional, pop, rock, etc.than this is the book for you! It lists everyartist who ever recorded Christmas songs and hymns, and it also gives alisting of the worth of the original vinyl record(according to thecondition of it,of course). A fun book to browse through even if you justwant to see what's out there & perhaps to make some additions to yourcollection. ... Read more

Product Description
This book describes the methodology for predicting the genetic merit of animals in the context of genetic improvement in an animal breeding programme. Information on an animal and its relatives, on either the characteristic to be improved or from other traits, can be used to predict the animals genetic merit, taking account of the relationships between measurements and the economic values of traits. The methodology is developed from first principles, without unnecessary detail or complexity, and all the required statistical and mathematical concepts are fully described in the book. The text discusses the methods for combining different sources of information and illustrates their use with examples of breeding programmes in cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. A series of questions with detailed answers is included in the book, to help reinforce the ideas and provide some practical experience in the prediction of genetic merit. The text is aimed at final year undergraduate and first year postgraduate students of quantitative genetics and animal breeding. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars prices are not accurate
I don't like the prices in this book, they are not accurate at all compared to what the records sell for in stores or what they sell for on ebay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good overview
What this book lacks as a reference it makes up for in structure. By stylistically grouping the vinyl entries and providing a well written preamble for each section, Chuck Miller does a great service for the vinyl collector who may not be an expert in every musical genre. If you need a good general vinyl primer or are new to vinyl collecting, this is it. If you need a reference book, get Tim Neely's volumes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FIRST RATE AND FAR-RANGING MUSIC INFORMATION GUIDE!
This is a terrific book that not only fits the needs of anyone seriously interested in music, but will also hold the interest of the more casual music fan.It is filled with fascinating
trivia and a knowledge of the music industry that gives an added depth to the various genres of music explored. It will updoubtedly send the reader re-examining their record collections in search of hidden *finds*.For *anyone* buying or
selling records ... or even just learning more about American music ...this book is a *must*!

Chuck Miller's encyclopedic knowledge of music shines through in this record guide! It would make a perfect gift for the music lover (or even the trivia buff!) in your life.

I recommend it most highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fix For Music Junkies
Warman's American Records is not only a great reference book but is also a terrific source of entertainment.Being much more than a price guide, it delves into the history of many of the recordings and offers quite a bit of amusing trivia.I am not a collector in the true sense of the word (although I do own a couple of pieces of valuable vinyl) but I am a music junkie and this book delivers a great fix! I'm looking forward to Volume 2!

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely informative, a great record collecting guide
This book is a tremendous guide for people who want to start their own record collection, but aren't sure where to begin or which genre to collect.Over 50 different musical genres, artists and labels are profiled, each with photos of classic and rare LP covers, 45 labels, 78 RPM records, and 7" picture sleeves. The book even explains some rising collectible genres, such as Northern Soul music, Space Age Pop, and jukebox-only collectibles. It also contains ancillary information on record and music websites, magazines, museums and books, in order to help collectors increase their knowledge of their favorite music. If you are a record collector, or are thinking of becoming one, this book is essential reading!I enjoyed it immensely!! ...
