Product Description
Unseen presents the best of all unpublished photographs taken
and selected by the members of the BPPA.
Images that were overlooked by picture editors because of lack
of space, technical problems, a political decision, or editorial taste.
The images in Unseen communicate a diverse blend of tender,
terrifying, moving, funny, and controversial stories about
people and places around the world, and crucial moments in
contemporary history.
This book presents pictures in many ways as striking and
memorable as their published counterparts, but incredibly,
discovered here for the first time. ... Read more

Product Description
Photography began almost 150 years ago with the nearly simultaneous invention of two types of photographic processes, the daguerreotype and the Talbotype or calotype. On January 7, 1839, Louis Daguerre announced his discovery of a way to reproduce images on coated copper plate. Shortly thereafter, on January 31, William Talbot explained how shadows of objects could be chemically recorded on salted paper sensitized with silver nitrate. With the advent of photography, the people, architecture, and natural beauty of Chester County, Pennsylvania, made worthy subject matter for many professional and amateur photographers. Photographers in Chester County, many of whom were also skilled artisans and craftsmen, were fortunate in that they lived near Philadelphia, a center of photographic activity. The first photographers in the county were itinerant tradesmen who traveled from place to place, taking photographs, portraits mainly, for a fee. Later, as photography developed and became more widely known, many photographers opened their own studios. "Reflected Light: A Century of Photography in Chester County" offers an overview of the development of the photographic medium and traces the progress of photography by examining the work of ten Chester County photographers. In the text by Pamela Powell and in striking photographs of the county and its people, the story of photography in its earliest years is deftly told. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice reference book
I checked this book out at the library along with many other books. Since I'm taking photos for my e-commerce site I needed to have more advanced methods. This book is one that I keep coming back to as a reference as I worked and learned. As always when I find an especially useful book I buy it used from Amazon. Maybe someone who knows photography really well would not find this book useful, but I only needed tips on shooting items for the web. Not portraits or scenery or any other type of photography that I find taking up most of the "real" photography books.

With no formal training in photography I have quickly learned to make decent pictures that inspire people to buy my items. I needed to photograph hundreds of items quickly and with high quality. This book is the best I've found so far among the large numbers of books on photography. I have learned to take good photos from the very start with proper lighting. But along with that I've discovered that doing basic photo touch-ups are essential, even if done in a batch process. I have to process up to 500 or more photos after doing a shoot on a new batch of items, about 5 shots per item. Almost any other type of photography would pay much more attention on a per image basis than this, but I don't have time for that. It's hard enough getting all of these shots onto the web and cataloged. If I only make a few dollars I am not going to spend more than a few minutes on that item.

This book has some specific techniques that I found invaluable. I have made my own light tent and lighting system and I used the tip on having all the main lights overhead, using reflected light from the sides to give a more natural look.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very superficial
I have a good grounding in photography and was hoping for more detailed instruction on product photography. I learned practically nothing. There is a lot of very elementary filler material on general photography, digital cameras and editing software and Internet. The photos are not that great either. May be somewhat useful for someone who has no knowledge at all of these topics

2-0 out of 5 stars Professionals only.
This is not what i expected. I needed a beginners guide. The book tells little about cameras. It's mostly how to do professional shoots...meaning expensive specialized equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Source For All The Answers
As a regular e-bayer, I'm always looking for a competitive marketing edge. This book clearly points a way to gain that edge by differentiating my offerings from a large majority of my competitors. I've often thought that most photographs used in e-bay marketing are mediocre, at best, my own included. When I see a good e-bay photographic presentation, I recognize the selling power that it represents, but I have rarely accomplished it myself. Sinclair and Livingston have produced a terrific book. If you read it and apply the material, almost anyone (including me) can produce "above average" photographs for their e-bay marketing. The book is a quick-read, but provides an excellent reference souce for later application of the material it contains. I've read a couple other e-bay books by Joe Sinclair and one thing I like about all these books is that they have a nice clean easy-to-read layout. Each chapter in this book has substantial stand-alone value. A chapter that may be a trinket to you might be a treasure to me, and vice versa. In total, however, the book will have great value to any serious e-bay marketer. If "a picture is worth a thousand words", then several very good pictures make a powerful e-bay sales presentaion, indeed. My conclusion ... a great book, complete, perfect for practical application. ... Read more

Product Description
In the tradition of great Magnum books, this publication brings together the work of the finest photographers of our time. Whether covering the latest news or working on commissions or their own personal stories, Magnum photographers have also found time to document a sport that unites us all - football. This uplifting book brings together an array of images by outstanding photographers working across the globe: Henri Cartier-Bresson in Italy, James Nachtwey in Brazil, Steve McCurry in Burma, Martin Parr in Japan, Abbas in Iran, Luc Delahaye in France, and many more. The pictures, taken over fifty years, show that whether played with a tin can on the back streets of Glasgow or with bare feet on a dusty field in Tanzania, football is a game that cuts across all geographic and social divides. Magnum photographers have captured the sport and its fans with affection and humour. Magnum Football is not a book about super-rich professionals. Instead, it uses football to illuminate the human condition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Homage To the Beautiful Game!
An absolutely beautiful collection of about 200 black and white and color photographs celebrating the global sport known as football. Since its founding by a collective of photojournalists in the '40s Magnum has been one of the world's premier photo agencies, so it's not surprising that their archives have yielded such an array of compelling photos of the beautiful game. Few of the photos are of the high level world or professional ranks, rather they are of regular players and fans in the grimy cities, dusty villages, and muddy pitches of the world. Some are action shots, some are posed, some are impressionistic-but all are a tribute to the simplest of sports. Sure to delight devotees of either football or photography, it's an attractive and inexpensive collection that deserves wide readership. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good what there is of it
I agree with stiffcrust. An ambitious book which doesn't quite live up to its potential. A large number of very surprising omissions, and mosttext on US lighthouses is copied from F. Ross Holland's books.Hailed as astudy of more than 125 of the most significant lighthouses in the world, this book leaves me a little baffled, as the selection process seems quiterandom and sketchy. The photographs are worth the price of admissionalone, but strong as they are, there are oddities...the current photo ofthe Eddystone is covered in text (not the only picture to get thistreatment either), only casual mention of the aethetically deplorable, yetsupremely functional helideck on this lighthouse and other British lights. That contraption was the biggest innovation to come down the pipe for rocklights since Whinstanley built the first Eddystone in the 17th Century.Itseems also that the background photo is the same as the feature color photoon a few of the lights. Basically this is a coffee table book consideringthe pictures, but the text is certainly pushing the envelope for the casuallighthouse fan.Personally, there are many lighthouses I would rather seein a book of this scope. At least a second volume should still hold plentyof interest, but it will need a livelier text, a better selection process, and it might be nice if the lighthouse on the cover was discussed withinthe text (unlike this book). And yet for all that I like thebook and Ido recoemmend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for anyone bitten by the lighthouse bug
This is the English version of "Phares du Monde" published in France by Edilarge SA, and has been eagerly anticipated. There are some amazing photos which you are not likely to see anywhere else.

It's awonderful addition to my collection, but I have 2 complaints about thetext. One is the emphasis on technical detail versus historic background. There is much content related to candlepower, electrical generators, radiobeacons, and such. Personally, I am interested in why and how thelighthouse got built in the first place. So the text is somewhat dry andlantern/equipment oriented, with negligible anecdotal content.

Secondly, the choice of lighthouses seems puzzling to me. There are some famouslighthouses, e.g. in Portugal, Hawaii, the Red Sea, Sri Lanka, India, whichI would have expected to find in here. Australia gets 1 lighthouse,Germany, Croatia and USA get 5 each. Go figure, based on the respectivecoastlines. A fascinating book, but surprising too. I'd like to get this inhardcover format. ...
