Product Description
• Provide a more enjoyable and motivating experience for young learners.
• Gain the skills necessary to apply a tactical approach to any sport.
• Use modified game play to create a developmentally appropriate environment for learning.

Sport Foundations for Elementary Physical Education: A Tactical Games Approach is the first book to provide a comprehensive, applied, and field-tested plan for using tactical games teaching in elementary school.

If you’re a teacher or coach working with children in second through fifth grade, you’ll find this approach increases students’ motivation, enhances their tactical awareness, and leads to improved skill development.

Written by the authors of the highly popular Teaching Sport Concepts and Skills: A Tactical Games Approach, this book teaches the tactical games approach by game category: invasion games, net/wall games, striking/fielding games, and target games.

This approach to teaching tactics, skills, and off-the-ball movements using modified or conditioned games allows greater flexibility for the teacher. What’s more, it increases the transfer of tactics and skills across games for students and allows students to experience the excitement of play before practicing specific skills.

For each game category, the book presents three progressive levels of units containing up to 30 detailed lesson plans. Each of the 91 lessons is designed to allow teachers flexibility in planning and progression and includes

• a tactical problem,
• lesson focus,
• objective,
• games,
• practice tasks, and
• sets of problem-solving questions and answers for ongoing assessment.

In addition to clearly explaining the concepts of tactical teaching, the authors provide a wealth of practical material for teaching and assessment. In particular, the chapter on assessment provides sample tools for authentic assessment in the psychomotor, cognitive, behavioral and social, and affective learning domains. Another chapter details how to build a curriculum using the games approach.

Sport Foundations for Elementary Physical Education: A Tactical Games Approach will enable you to teach elementary-level games and sports more effectively. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A dynamic guide for the physical education professional
This book covers all the bases that teachers need for implementing a health-related physical education curriculum to promote lifelong fitness. It is for use with a K-12 physical education curriculum.

In the simplest terms, it's a teacher's guide that's based on current science and is very up-to-date.

One thing I especially like about the guide is that it gives the teacher cautions about certain exercises. For example, there are resistance training cautions.

A PE teacher certainly does not want to be responsible for allowing a student to injure himself. So you learn how to develop a fitness program that is safe while, at the same time, providing powerful benefits.

The authors say, ". . . You should . . . seek additional training specific to working with children and adolescents in developing muscular strength and endurance in a safe and effective manner."

Here is a look at the contents . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Hirt
I haven't used this product; I do, however, know one of the authors (Mary Hirt). Dr. Hirt was one my college professors at CSU Northridge (one of exactly three professors who have deeply influenced me as a student and professional). She's a brilliant instructor who really puts her heart into teaching and I would expect nothing less of her published work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome product!
This book is great!I used some ideas in my PE classes right away to shake things up and the students really enjoyed the class.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Physical Education Masterpiece
I have collected over 60 books in my career as a physical educator and Maximum Physical Education is easily in my top 2 of all time. (John Hichwa's "Right Fielders are People Too" would be the other)

This book has given me a plethora of ideas and resources that I immediately implemented in my 8th grade physical education class.

Don't be alarmed if you are not a middle school physical education teacher. Most, if not all the acitivities, can be easily done and enjoyed by the 3-6 elementary students.I would also highly recommend this book to any recreation or summer program in need of fresh and exciting activity ideas.

The activities are well written, concise, easy to implement, and most of all, involve an huge amount of active FUN.

Beyond the acitivities, you will find strategies that will allow your students to get the most out of their physical education class.

I have recently been selected to be the Athletic Director for a private school and I was told that I would be responsible for overseeing all students who participate in our athleitcs as well as to come up with a physical education curriculum for those who do not participate in the sports.I also was told I would interact with the elementary physical education teacher to help with developing a curriculum too.I bought this book for that, and I was really amazed on how well this book is.It breaks it down into three levels:Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 4th grade, and 5th to 6th grade, and has lesson plans for 36 weeks. It breaks the plans down to the objective, instructional activities, fitness devleopment, lesson focus, etc.It will make my job a lot easier. Now, I need to find a book just like this for the middle school program. This book also has tear out pages, if you wish to put it into a binder.Very good book!

Product Description

While performance-based assessment has long been a staple of education, no book covers the relevant topics for middle and high school physical education as thoroughly as this new edition of Performance-Based Assessment for Middle and High School Physical Education. This updated edition reflects the current NASPE standards and includes new ancillary materials, more examples for educators, and a new chapter about assessing fitness.

This text will help you

• develop assessments and implement them into your curriculum, making the assessment process a natural part of instruction;

• provide feedback to students so they know what they have accomplished and what they still need to do; and

• use a variety of tools—including open-response questions, game play and modified game play, and progressive assessments—to measure student learning

The authors break down this complex subject into easily digestible pieces and show you how to develop assessments that will help you and your students work together to enhance the instructional process in physical education. The authors, who have over three decades of experience teaching and assessing in public schools, describe the various types of performance-based assessments and show how to implement the assessments, using numerous models as examples to be adapted to your own situations.

Not only will you learn how to develop and use assessments to help students, but you will also receive unit plans for team, individual, and dual sports that you can modify for use in your own classes. You’ll learn how to create rubrics, use portfolios in the assessment process, and integrate assessments into fitness education and physical education. You’ll also explore the challenges with traditional grading practices and find out how to overcome those challenges.

The authors provide a wealth of tools for assessing students according to local, state, and NASPE standards while helping students reach their goals. The text is supported by a Web site that includes a test package, a presentation package with PowerPoint slides, an instructor guide, and a CD-ROM that includes additional forms and assessments.

Performance-Based Assessment for Middle and High School Physical Education, Second Edition, will help you develop authentic assessments and get the most out of the assessment experience. And in doing so, it will help your students experience success.

4-0 out of 5 stars P.E. Lesson plans for High school
I think this book is a great resource for the high school P.E. teacher. I gave it four stars because because it is a great resource! I didn't give 5 starts because these work really only if you have all the needed materials. It would be even better if it gave alternative ways to teach the different sports or more sport/activities that are more accommodating to smaller schools or non-public institutions with less money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Forced to take the class
Well, I was forced to take the class I used this book for so I really don't think I am in a good position to give a reliable review about the book. I read the book because I had too. Although I can say, that I was able to take and adapt a few pointers here and there and according to a few of the guys that took the class with me, and those that are in the 'pedagogy' field this book is really helpful and really good. I hope that helps. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of PE, Exercise Science, and Sport
Good overview for anyone considering a career in a sports related field. Most photos are black & white which is good since it helps keep cost down. However, a lot of them are old. Since this is the 16th edition published in 2009, I would have expected the the photos would have been updated to more recent ones. While there are some more recent photos, many of them seem to be from the 70's and 80's which makes the book feel outdated. Overall, the information is good and current though.

It does tend to be rather liberal. It puts the primary responsibility for physical fitness not on the individual (or parents in the case of children) but on government agencies and programs, schools, and organized fitness/sports programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used Text
I can not find any evidence of this being a used book. The quality is like new and I received it before another book that I paid to have expedited. I guess I wasted my money on expedited shipping.
