5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory for ALL clinically oriented manual therapist!
As an educator and former instructor of an advanced clinical (medical/orthopedic) massage program, I'm constantly asked by massage therapists for an all-in-one reference to help them comprehend my approach/philosophy to outcome-based bodywork. Although I've pulled and integrated information from several resources; from Travell to Rolf, and types of bodywork; from Reiki to Rossiter, I've found one resource to be indispensable as a solid foundation on which to build: Massage for Orthopedic Conditions by Thomas Hendrickson.

For manual therapists who seek to achieve effective goal-oriented sessions for their client/patients, it's comprehensive in its scope of essential functional anatomy, implications for treatment, joint-specific history gathering (including sample questions), kinesiology, sources of dysfunction and injury, and much more. Hendrickson's text also covers a range of information from the general theory of vibrational medicine to targeted muscle energy and friction techniques.

I tell manual therapists, if they are serious about clinical massage and achieving powerful, effective, consistent results, this text is a must-have. This resource keeps on giving; as the reader will uncover layers of details and depth at every reading. My two copies of the first edition have been reduced to tatters from overuse syndrome!

This new edition comes with various improvements that his legion of enthusiasts will appreciate. I, for one, am a great fan of the new color illustrations. Also, I enjoyed the updated rationales for treatment, as well as the flow between assessment and application of techniques...a topic often missed in other resources.

Hurray, for Thomas Hendrickson's new edition! May it inspire, guide and educate future clinical therapists to facilitate and attain healing in their patients for many years to come!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
Can't add anything else to all the other top star reviews here. This is just the manual I was looking for. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any clinical massage practice!
If you are looking for an advanced technique to help your clients get out of pain fast, then you must have this book! Dr. Hendrickson has taken his years of clinical practice and developed a method that any massage or manual therapist can learn. This book is rich with tools for assessment and treatment for many common and not so common soft-tissue injuries and dysfunctions. It is well laid out and easy to use. It also includes a great section on the theory and science of massage and manual therapy. It is packed with valuable information and I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars required reading for any advanced massage therapist
This book has everything that you wanted to know about the body, its structure, function and dysfunction and methods for treating many common injuries. All the informationis backed up with up to date research and reflects the most current understanding in the manual medicine fields. Any therapist who wants to move beyond the basics should get there hand on this book, it will change your work for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Resource!
This book has so much in it that can help a practitioner to relieve the aches and pains of his clients, and even sometimes keep them out of surgery.Any given page has so much information in it.You have clients that need to relax and you have those clients who need to get out of pain.Be a practitioner who can do both!
Massage and Manual Therapy for Orthopedic Conditions is the best reference I have ever seen which has "recipes" for gentle and effective work for clients with conditions such as frozen shoulder, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, etc. It's best if you can take a course from Mr. Hendrickson, but I have friends who have used just the book, and noticed their work become better and better.
I struggled in my early practitioner years, looking for this information. Now that I have it, my work has become so much more effective (and FUN!).It's comfortable and relaxing for the client and ergonomically safe for the therapist.Different from other modalities, but can be integrated into any kind of session to make it more effective.
This book is a must for any serious bodywork practitioner. ... Read more

Book five in the Cattle Valley Series

Doctors Sam Browning and Isaac Singer opened the Cattle Valley Medical Clinic when they were both fresh out of medical school. It was the best thing they ever did, other than loving each other for more than twenty-five years. They’ve enjoyed a thriving practice and an even better sex life, but lately routine has started to set in.

With the growth of the town, the doctors decide it’s time for the clinic to hire a physical therapist. They thought hiring Matt Jeffries over the phone and offering him the use of their garage apartment was the smart thing to do. That is until Matt shows up, suitcases in hand. Three months after returning from the war in Iraq, Matt has bigger problems than his attraction to two gorgeous older men. Night sweats and flashbacks are keeping him locked in his own shell.

Can two doctors offer the physical therapist a little therapy of their own? ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Environments covers the major issues involved in providing lawful, team-oriented, and effective occupational and physical therapy services for students with disabilities in public schools. For those involved with students with disabilities, this book helps them make sound decisions about services that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children.

Since the 1975 enactment of Public Law 94--142, which mandated that occupational and physical therapy be provided “as may be required by a handicapped child to benefit from special education,” this required link between therapy and education has continued to lead to confusion and controversy about which students should receive therapy in school and what types of services should be provided. The purpose of Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Environments is to clarify the major issues surrounding occupational and physical therapy in public schools, and to provide a framework for delivery of team- and family-oriented services that meet individual needs of students with disabilities.

For those unsure of current regulations regarding handicapped students, or those who need clarification on the law, the book begins with a review of legislation and regulations. This begins to guide and shape schools’provision of therapy services. The following chapters assist occupational and physical therapists and important members of the educational teams of disabled students to make sound decisions about which students need school-based therapy services:

  • Laws that Shape Therapy Services in Educational Environments: summarizes the major statutory law, federal regulations, and case law interpretation in which school-based practice is grounded.
  • Pediatric Therapy in the 1990s: reviews contemporary theories of motor development, motor control, and motor learning that have had major impact on therapy for school-age children with disabilities.
  • Related Services Decision-Making: describes a strong team approach to determining a student’s need for occupational and physical therapy services, which takes into account the unique characteristics of both the student and the educational team.
  • Assessment and Intervention in School-Based Practice: describes an approach to assessment and intervention in schools that clearly illustrates a relationship between therapy and educational programs that result in meaningful outcomes for students.
  • Challenges of Interagency Collaboration: reports on a qualitative study that points out that schools are not the only settings in which many students with disabilities receive services, so coordination between various agencies is essential to avoid gaps, overlaps, and cross purposes.

Those who can benefit from Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Environments include occupational and physical therapists who work in public schools, school administrators, teachers, and even parents of disabled children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!
There are too many errors, both in the practice questions at the end of chapters and in the text itself to be able to trust any of it.Many of the wrong information is very basic and shows a lack of proofreading.Get one of the American Physical Therapy Association endorsed books like the O'Sullivan or Giles. This book should be taken off the market. How can the publisher stand behind a book full of false information?!

4-0 out of 5 stars good back, poor cd
The material in the text is very comprehensive, and covers all facets of the curriculum requirements. The downside is the
accompanying CD that has (2) practice exams. It contains multiple errata, mainly typos and incorrect answers to approximately 10-15 questions. Again, great text, can be an excellent reference; poor CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars Skip this book
I purchased this book instead of the O'sullivan's and Giles' review books.I found this book lacked the necessary information that needed to be applied on the boards.I was given the O'sullivan's and Giles' after a couple of months using the dutton and ended up being blown away w/ how much more in depth and will organized both of these books were compared to the dutton. The O'sullivan is very detailed oriented and has an excessive amount of info along w/ more difficult exam questions. The Giles' has a good balance of both.In the end, move on from this review book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Exam questions are lacking
The academic section of the book has useful information, but the exam questions are weak and not reflective of the more applied questions used on the current national exam. The book was too expensive given the exam questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
In my opinion, this Dutton book is better than the O'sullivan's and Giles' review books. This book is a detailed and easy to read review with a lot of clinically relevant information. I am not a big fan of the questions after each chapter, although they are helpful. However, the CD is fairly decent with question styles geared towards the NPTE exam. Definitely a smart investment for this book and CD. Highly recommended. ... Read more
