Product Description
This textbook provides a thorough introduction to Newtonian Mechanics and is intended for university students in physics, astronomy and engineering. It is based on a course for which Dr. Knudsen earned an award for the best teaching at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. More than 100 problems with solutions and 92 worked examples help the student to grasp the essential aspects of the subject, and to develop proficiency in using the powerful methods of Newtonian mechanics. Moreover, the fundamental problem of motion and the concept of inertial frames is faced from the very beginning, and runs through the entire development of classical mechanics. This new and fresh approach is presented in its third edition, which has been revised and enlarged. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Based On An Award-Winning Course In Mechanics
This is the best book on introductory Newtonian mechanics that I've read. The examples aren't shown just for "plug-and-chug" purposes as in many others; the authors use them to further develop an idea.As such, each example is important, and there are several. Each exercise is also useful in a way that many undergraduate mechanics exercises aren't.The authors also in their prose express a passion for the subject--always appreciated, and sometimes humorous. [My favorite example is on page 359 of the paperback version.Near the top of the page, following a discussion of Newton's law of universal gravitation: "The greatest achievement in the history of man was completed."]

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding. The best book on Newtonian mechanics available.
I own dozens of books on the subject and this is by far my favorite. It is clearly written with a fine selection of problems. An excellent supplement to this book is THE VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLES OF MECHANICS byLanczos.I highly recommend these two books for a firm understanding ofclassical mechanics. ... This book is intended as a handbook for professionals andresearchers in the areas of Physical Oceanography, Ocean and CoastalEngineering and as a text for graduate students in these fields.

It presents a comprehensive study on surface ocean waves induced bywind, including basic mathematical principles, physical description ofthe observed phenomena, practical forecasting techniques of variouswave parameters and applications in ocean and coastal engineering, allfrom the probabilistic and spectral points of view.

The book commences with a description of mechanisms of surface wavegeneration by wind and its modern modeling techniques. The stochasticand probabilistic terminology is introduced and the basic statisticaland spectral properties of ocean waves are developed and discussed indetail.

The bulk of material deals with the prediction techniques for waves indeep and coastal waters for simple and complex ocean basins andcomplex bathymetry. The various prediction methods, currently used inoceanography and ocean engineering, are described and the examples ofpractical calculations illustrate the basic text.

An appendix provides a description of the modern methods of wavemeasurement, including the remote sensing techniques. Also the wavesimulation methods and random data analysis techniques arediscussed. In the book a lot of discoveries of the Russian and EastEuropean scientists, largely unknown in the Western literature due tothe language barrier, are referred to. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Barron's AP Physics A Review Book
This is the worst AP review book on the planet, if you want to fail your final exam or get a 1 on the AP exam, get this book. It has numerous mistakes, it is the absolute worst review book FOR PHYSICS. I don't know how Barron's does on other AP exams, but for Physics, it sucks. NO help at all, I wish I had not written on the practice test or I would return it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book is full of mistakes!!!
I am a teacher of AP Physics B.I had my entire class purchase this for review preparation.Unfortunately, the book is riddled with mistakes--multiple-choice questions that have no correct answer, solutions done wrong, calculation mistakes, even questions that have two correct answers. This continually undermines the confidence of my students.I am having to check through every problem and example in the book.I don't know if the author or the publisher, or both, forgot to do any proofreading of the text, or if they were just plain lazy and sloppy with their work.Oh, did I mention the haphazard use of significant figures? ...like the question that gives data to one significant figure, but the answer is given to four significant figures.Go figure!I have used Barrons study guides for other courses in the past, and have been satisfied, but this has been a horrible experience. If someone knows of a truly good study guide for this material, please post it here.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for a general review
This book is good for the AP test, but if you are like most of us who use it as a study guide to supplement our textbooks, this book may not do the job. It is not detailed enough for class purposes.

Also, I don't know why they put problems you can't possibly do without a calculator for some multiple choice questions. They label those problems as possibly harder than real AP questions, but what's the point when there won't be any like it on there? I guess it's only good for midterm/final practice for you course.

Overall it's pretty good for a quick review before the AP or your midterm/final. I saw problems very similar to the ones in this book on mine. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
This book is horribly counterproductive. The review section isn't worth the paper it's written on, as it doesn't reflect at all the Physics C material. It appears that they just cut-and-pasted the review for thePhysics GRE (given to advanced undergraduates), which is absurd. Avoid thisbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tests- thoroughly prepared me for the exam
helped me in my course and the test. Some of the questions were a little harder than the actual but got me prepared.

2-0 out of 5 stars A fair review of the class.
The book provides a thorough description and explanation of all the topics covered on the AP exam. However, it could use a few more additional practice tests and problems to achieve a better sense of the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not adequate for AP review

Product Description
Statistical Mechanics is the study of systems where the number of interacting particles becomes infinite. In the last fifty years tremendous advances have been made which have required the invention of entirely new fields of mathematics such as quantum groups and affine Lie algebras. They have engendered remarkable discoveries concerning non-linear differential equations and algebraic geometry, and have produced profound insights in both condensed matter physics and quantum field theory. Unfortunately, none of these advances are taught in graduate courses in statistical mechanics.

This book is an attempt to correct this problem. It begins with theorems on the existence (and lack) of order for crystals and magnets and with the theory of critical phenomena, and continues by presenting the methods and results of fifty years of analytic and computer computations of phase transitions. It concludes with an extensive presentation of four of the most important of exactly solved problems: the Ising, 8 vertex, hard hexagon and chiral Potts models. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good but not excellent
The second edition of this book is revised and enriched with new and hot materials. The concepts of "coherent control" and "attosecond pulses" are added as they become more and more significant.

The first 3 chapters of the books do not seem very useful. Although the authors tried their best, especially the discussion of "mode-locking" is not as clearly stated as Demtroder's "Laser Spectroscopy". More vivid, illustrative and tangible examples would be very useful.

The rest of the book can be considered good and in my opinion this books does not deserve more than 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars This short book is an excellent overview
I use femtosecond lasers in my graduate work, and I found this book an excellent source of review material in preparing for my oral examinations. It is not very detailed or mathematical, but has excellentphenomenonological discussions of a variety of laser properties andtechniques. It is also handy because it is fairly recent. I foundparticularly useful the sections on amplification, semiconductor lasers, and ultrashort diagnostics.

This book is not a comprehensive guide tobuilding and using an ultrashort pulse laser system because it lacks somuch detail. However, the equations are explained very well, and thereferences seem fairly comprehensive.

The book is also completelymissing a discussion of fiber laser and ultrashort pulse propogation infibers. The section on nonlinear ultrashort optics is also far too brief. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for grads and postdocs
This book sports introductions, concepts, theorems, proofs, and summaries of key mathematical areas needed for graduate level and postdoctoral mathematical physics. Those focusing on theoretical physics will especially appreciate the book; it puts all the concepts and most of the theorems you need in one handy reference. Overall, it's another, must-have expert reference from the CRC Press.

Like all mathematical physics books, it emphasizes applications and concepts at the expense of pure mathematical rigor. This means that some concepts will be explained in plain, rather than mathematical, terms and that some more advanced theorems will be asserted--with supporting logic--rather than showing full proofs or mentioning aspects applicable to areas outside of currently known physics. Most physics people will consider these omissions an advantage. If you seek a deeper, less applied, more pure mathematical approach for certain areas, the book provides numerous launching points to other texts, in the references section.

Since the book contains chapter after chapter of concise, clear, prose and equations--but no problem sets--this is a reference rather than a textbook. For physics people who quickly want to learn the math concepts needed to read a research paper, understand a theory, or conceptually approach a problem, this is one of the best references I've seen--and I've seen a lot of them.

Please note, as well, that the reference does not attempt to cover the writing of computer algorithmns to automate the methods discussed. This is another topic in itself, and is better left to other texts, such as the "Numerical methods in..." series.

Overall, I rate this reference book a conceptually clear and concise overview of advanced mathematical physics. I highly recommend it for graduate students and postdocs practicing in theoretical physics today. The book covers, lucidly and in one volume, what would otherwise require you to mine from 10+ texts in different disciplines. From those with limited time but a taste for conceptual precision, this text will save you days, weeks, years. :) ... Read more

Product Description

Starting from basic principles, the book systematically covers both Heisenberg and Schrödinger realizations of quantum mechanics (in this order). The material traditionally presented in quantum textbooks is illustrated with applications which are (or will become) cornerstones of future technologies. The emphasis in the matrix formulation focus the attention on the spin, the most important quantum observable, and paves the way to chapters on quantum information (including crytography, teleportation and computation), on recent tests of quantum physics and on decoherence. Additions and changes found in the second edition include; a more friendly presentation to Hilbert spaces; more practical applications e.g. scanning tunneling microscope (potential barrier); quantum dots (single-particle states in semiconductors); lasers and masers (induced emission); real experiments that have recently provided a qualitative change in the foundations of quantum physics; and an outline of the density matrix formalism as applied to a simple model of decoherence.

From reviews of the first edition:

"Daniel Bes clearly understands that accuracy, clarity and brevity … has therefore made a careful selection of the topics to make an accessible concise book on quantum mechanics for a modern introductory undergraduate course... The claims that this is a modern textbook are well justified by the inclusion of … the flow of the main ideas is not unbalanced by laborious detail." Contemporary Physics

"It is concise but covers an extraordinary range of topics, from those typically found in traditional quantum mechanics textbooks … All this is illustrated with examples that cover a wide range … provides a large amount of information per page and the selection, extension and balance of topics is adequate for an introductory course." 5-0 out of 5 stars The best quantum introduction
I've used the text as an introduction to quantum mechanics in electronic engineering and the results were great. The book is certainly concise, mathematical preliminaries are short and useful, and the approach is simple but the scope is important. It is very axiomatic and from a few principles I could solve the problems of the Schaum Edition devoted to Quantum Mechanics without reading the theoretical part. I've read several books introducing quantum mechanics, and I consider this was the best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money
They call this book "concise" and they aren't kidding. An example is the section on addition of angular momentum: its one page. An amazing 4 and a half pages is devoted to the harmonic oscillator! The bottom line of this book is that its far too "concise". It seems like it was thrown together in a single weekend. If you already know quantum mechanics and are looking for mastery or deeper understanding, or just a review, there isn't enough here to get that. On the other hand, if you're learning QM for the first time, this book is completely worthless. In the end its unfortunate because I think the author has a talent for explanation, he should have taken the time to write a solid book that wasn't concise but useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, concise and orginal!
The book is simple great, it covers both formulation of quantum mechanics, Heisenberg's and Schrödinger's, some problems, as the harmonic oscilator are cover in both points of view. The modern applications such as teletransportation, quantum cryptography and new interpretations of quantum mechanics (different from Copenhague's one) are introduced in a clever and concise way. The book is great for an introductory course but also as reference. Dr. Bès makes use of his amazing trajectory and intelligence in this book and develops a unique textbook. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is based on many years of teaching statistical and thermal physics. It assumes no previous knowledge of thermodynamics, kinetic theory, or probability--the only prerequisites are an elementary knowledge of classical and modern physics, and of multivariable calculus.

The first half of the book introduces the subject inductively but rigorously, proceeding from the concrete and specific to the abstract and general. In clear physical language the book explains the key concepts, such as temperature, heat, entropy, free energy, chemical potential, and distributions, both classical and quantum.

The second half of the book applies these concepts to a wide variety of phenomena, including perfect gases, heat engines, and transport processes. Each chapter contains fully worked examples and real-world problems drawn from physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, electronics, and mechanical engineering. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to the subject I've seen
I wish I had this textbook when I was an undergraduate, some thirty years ago.

Professor Sturge seamlessly combines results of both classical and statistical thermodynamics in a clear and enjoyable introduction to the subject. The greatest delight comes in the second half of this book, when those seemingly messy and arbitrary topics that used to be taught in introductory thermodynamics courses (heat engines, phase transitions) are presented as logical results and applications of the general theory.

Many of the problems presented at the end of each chapter are worth the effort because they often bring new insights.

I recommend this textbook to anyone who wants to understand rather than just pass their first course in thermodynamics,

This book is terrible. We used it for my introductory statistical mechanics class, and no one I talked to in that class liked the book.Things are not explained clearly, equations are often not derived, but either left as exercises, or just stated. Many important results aren't stated clearly, are only implicitly stated, or are hidden in the text.Examples are often not done clearly, and pretty much just state the question and then the answer without showing you how it was arrived at.The index is also worthless, and does not actually list things found in the book. This is one of the worst physics books I've ever used.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
I was fortunate enough to be one of Prof. Sturge's Physics 43 students in 1999.My classmates and I found this to be a wonderful book written by a first-rate teacher. We firmly believe that we found all of the errors and typos ;)

The problem sets nicely complement the text and cover a wide-range of topics.I still have my copy (a soft-binding before AK Peters published it), it is that good.Buy it and consider your money very well spent. ... Read more
