Product Description
The theory of soliton equations and integrable systems has developed rapidly during the last 30 years with numerous applications in mechanics and physics. For a long time, books in this field have not been written but the flood of papers was overwhelming: many hundreds, maybe thousands of them. All this output followed one single work by Gardner, Green, Kruskal, and Mizura on the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV), which had seemed to be merely an unassuming equation of mathematical physics describing waves in shallow water.

Besides its obvious practical use, this theory is attractive also because it satisfies the aesthetic need in a beautiful formula which is so inherent to mathematics.

The second edition is up-to-date and differs from the first one considerably. One third of the book is completely new and the rest is refreshed and edited. ... Read more

Product Description
A modern self-contained introduction to key topics in advanced general relativity. The opening chapter reviews the subject, with strong emphasis on the geometric structures underlying the theory. The next chapter discusses 2-component spinor theory, its usefulness for describing zero-mass fields, its practical application via Newman-Penrose formalism, together with examples and applications. The subsequent chapter is an account of the asymptotic theory far from a strong gravitational source, describing the mathematical theory by which measurements of the far-field and gravitational radiation emanating from a source can be used to describe the source itself. The final chapter describes the natural characteristic initial value problem, first in general terms, and then with particular emphasis for relativity, concluding with its relation to Arnold's singularity theory. Exercises are included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book for advanced GR
Although it seems to be a general relativity book, this is actually an excellent book for learning advanced mathematics. The sections on differential geometry and spinor analysis rival any of the dedicated textbooks on these subjects. This is also the only book to give a clear and concise introduction to tetrads and the Newman-Penrose formalism of general relativity.

This book is a must for any serious physicist.

5-0 out of 5 stars treasure trove of knowledge
It seems to me that there are far too many in number, and far too few in quality, books on on general relativity.

John Stewart, rather than waste time on the hordes of cute little cartoon models apt for a tourist ratherthan physicist, gets straight to the heart of the matter and presentsamazingly powerful results (on differential geometry/ Spinors/Asymptopia/Initial Value Problem). He doesn't skip any steps in his proofsand doesn't try to appeal to science fiction intuition.

As someone whohasn't encountered spinors before reading this book, I'm grateful for thehelpful appendi on the matter. Unfortuneately however I've found indifferent books the notation for spinors can vary wildly. The result isthat I must refigure out all the basic properties to understand thenotation. My complaint is that Stewart doesn't seem* (perhaps it's myignorance) to use the most common notation, but on the other hand, he alsoprovides the most easily used and referenced appendix.

In summary, ifreading most of that relativity tripe make you a tourist, Stewart makes youa citizen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars could be a standard work
With the sound implicit understanding that the reader is very well in tensor calculus the author shows the comprehensive basics of continua mechanics (kinematics, balance relations of mechanics and thermodynamics, objectivity and principle of dual variables) and material behaviour (elasticity, viscoelasticity, plasticity, viscoplasticity including introduction, experimental observation and continuum thermodynamics). The extension for higher kinematics such as micropolar, micromorphic, nonlocal or higher order gradient theories is not given. But the reader must not expect these topics because of space reasons. Topics like dual variables and the thermodynamical background of material behaviour assign this book. The balancing act between a correct representation for mathematicians and a practical one for engineers is done more than successfully. The matters are shown detailed, accurately, entirely and good readable. No question, this book is a very outstanding depiction of this field. ... Read more

Product Description
A perception exists that physics is a sophisticated disciplineaccessible only to the brightest students. To dispel this notion, the authors created aprogram that makes college-level physics attainable to average high school students.Additionally, its distinctive concept-building approach allows high performing studentto flourish. Regardless of experience, all physics teachers can confidently preparestudents for success with this product. The unique program design also makes it idealfor the home-schooled student.

This program has proven, throughfield-testing, that upon successful completion, students are rewarded with genuineconceptual understanding, a real sense of accomplishment, and the tangible benefit ofcollege credit.

What makes this program unique?

As opposed to chapter-by-chapter formats of traditionaltextbooks, it integrates concepts and employs constant review, allowing students tostrengthen understanding over time. The 100-lesson format develops concepts in aprogressive, spiraling manner. Concepts are introduced at a fundamental level developingfurther in later lessons, encouraging incremental learning.

Problem sets that accompany each lesson represent an important feature that promotesconfidence and understanding. Each set includes topics from current and previouslessons, making each set comprehensive. As the course progresses, the problems increasein complexity and depth, enabling students to master and connect concepts.

All tests are comprehensive and include multiple choice and freeresponse sections. The tests continuously increase in difficulty, building to AP-levelrigor. The scoring rubrics and alternate forms of each test allow teachers and studentsto diagnose weaknesses and focus learning.

The program alsoincludes a set of ten descriptive physics questions after every fifth lesson, whichpromotes thought and expose misconceptions, while requiring consideration of conceptsfrom a qualitative and conceptual perspective. The Teacher Resource CD contains detailedkeys for problem sets, quizzes and tests. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Method for Teaching Physics
I had the privilege of having Mark McVicker as both my AP Chemistry and AP Physics teacher.I was in his AP Physics class three years before this book was published, but I still experienced the 100 lesson system upon which this book is structured.I cannot stress enough how well designed this system is.At that point in my education, I had not had any serious physics class.Yet, by the end of the year, I was able to achieve a 4 out of 5 on the AP test (giving me 9 credits at my current college).

Believe me when I say that this book is a fantastic introduction to physics for high school students that is easy to understand, very interesting, and well paced.I have never regretted taking Mr. McVicker's class and, if you're a physics teacher, you will never regret buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pre-Calculus Physics book ever
Advanced Placement Physics B results for my students using this book were outstanding. I had never taught physics before (I am a math teacher), and the first year that I used this book, the students scored mainly 4's and 5's with a couple of 3's. I knew nothing about physics, staying one lesson ahead of the students all year. The book would be great for my situation obviously (a novice teacher), or for homeschooling, or for a student who wanted to try to learn physics independently (not as good as having a teacher, of course),or for a class that has a really good experienced teacher. The book emphasizes the basic concepts that are learned in a non-Calculus college physics course. It prepares the student for the next level, a Calculus-based physics course. The unique set up of the problem sets allows for maximum understanding and retention of important physics concepts. The problem sets allow average but hardworking students the opportunity to become very good problem solving students. The book begins at a very doable level, and it progresses gradually to a very advanced problem solving level. A teacher resource CD is available that has answers to all problem sets, tests, and answers to tests. This book would be a great aid to the beginning teacher as well as to the experienced teacher. My administration thought that I must have been a great teacher based on my students' results on the AP test. All that I did was go through this book in the manner which the authors recommended. More books like this one would allow American students to compete in college math and science courses with students from Asia and Eastern Europe. ... Read more

Product Description

This updated and revised fourth edition covers all topics in mechanics from elementary Newtonian mechanics, canonical and rigid body mechanics to relativistic mechanics and nonlinear dynamics.

In particular, symmetries and invariance principles, geometrical structures and continuum mechanics play an important role. Scheck?s Mechanics enables the reader to develop understanding of the general principles from which equations of motions may be derived, to appreciate the importance of symmetries as a basis for quantum mechanics and to get practice in using theoretical tools and concepts that are essential for all branches of physics.

The book contains numerous problems with complete solutions, and some practical examples. This will be appreciated in particular by students using the text to accompany lectures on mechanics. The book ends with some historical remarks on important pioneers in mechanics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very complete book
Although I agree that one might be scared by the presence of sophisticated chapters like the one devoted to differential geometry, I find that this book is the best for an undergraduate level. It begins with Newtonian mechanics (some knowledge on linear algebra and calculus assumed) and covers all the fundamental points of modern mechanics in a rigorous and straightforward way, including a chapter in special relativity and another on dynamical systems and chaos. As it emphasizes the relevant role of symmetries, it naturally leads to quantum mechanics and can be used by advanced undergrad or graduate students interested in the geometrical foundations of mechanics.
Even though it is certainly not the easiest book available, if you have to buy just one, buy this!

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not as a first contact with Mechanics
I would agree on the rather high quality of the present
book, as pointed out in the other review.

However, the books seems not appropriate for a first contact
with Newtonian mechanics.

While the book makes every effort to introduce the reader to
modern concepts used in Mechanics, notably its setting in a
differential geometric context and an introduction to nonlinear
dynamical systems, the very basis of vector mechanics receives
only attention from one chapter.

This is clearly inadequate and a thourough understanding of
elementary vector mechanics and a good round of problem solving
is certainly essential before addressing even the simplest
Lagrangian mechanics.

The reason I want to point this out, is that the book is used
at an early level in German universities.

That is scary. I can well imagine people attempting to walk
through tangent spaces, but not able to integrate a simple
dynamics problem in R^2.

Please be careful!

4-0 out of 5 stars i disagree

i dont have it in front of me for a more detailed review, but the text is popular with german students and only after it became more widespread was it translated into english and redistributed. it's a fine introductory text (and better than kittel in my opinion, which reads more like a recipe-book).

1-0 out of 5 stars Seems very incomplete
We used this text in an introductory solid state course.Overall, it seems that the text is far too brief and doesn't thoroughly explain the material enough for an introductory course. There are very few examples/applications.The problems in the chapter require research outside of what is in the text.It leaves out a lot of important details.I would really suggest looking elsewhere for a good solid state introduction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited audience
I used this book in a course which was supposed to be an introduction to solid state. Know some basic ideas in crystal structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, advanced and partial differential equations andFourier anlysis and then you'll begin to be ready to understand this text. Kittel's Solid State text is slightly more helpful (but only slightly). Thebook is completely devoid of examples, yet there are sections at the end ofeach chapter involving current applications and experiments in condensedmatter physics and materials science. Exercises require a leap ofunderstanding from the contents of the chapter before them.Someexperience with a computer language may also be necessary. I wouldn'trecommend this book for most undergrads. ... Read more
