Product Description
As educational institutions designed for a broad public of all ages, planetariums can make an important contribution to the study and appreciation of the Universe around us, particularly in urban society where we are increasingly cut off from a clear view of the night sky. To help generate interest and support for planetariums as centres for culture and education, the United Nations, as part of its International Space Year activities, is publishing this guidebook on the Planetarium: A Challenge for Educators. In this publication, the experience of people in the establishment and development of existing planetariums has been assembled in order to encourage and guide the establishment of planetariums for those who do not yet have access to these important cultural and educational facilities. Covers: 1) The Concept of a Planetarium - Development, Teaching Astronomy, Philosophy and Direction, Methods, Innovative Education Program. 2) Outline of the History of Planetaria - +25 Years, Openings-A Statistical Analysis 3) Facilities of a Modern Planetarium 4) Centre of Culture and Education 5) Observation of Satellites 6) International Planetarium Society ... Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: A planetarium is a theatre built primarily for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky, or for training in celestial navigation. A dominant feature of most planetariums is the large dome-shaped projection screen onto which scenes of stars, planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move realistically to simulate the complex 'motions of the heavens'. The celestial scenes can be created using a wide variety of technologies, for example precision-engineered 'star balls' that combine optical and electro-mechanical technology, slide projector, video and fulldome projector systems, and lasers. Whatever technologies are used, the objective is normally to link them together to provide an accurate relative motion of the sky. Typical systems can be set to display the sky at any point in time, past or present, and often to show the night sky as it would appear from any point of latitude on Earth. Planetariums have become well-nigh ubiquitous, with some privately owned. A rough estimate is that in th...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: Expensive Planetarium is the star display written by Peter Samson for Spacewar!, one of the first interactive computer games. Conceived and written by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students including Stephen Russell who programmed it, the Spacewar! game first ran in early 1962 on the PDP-1 donated to the school by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). The planetarium replaced the game's random dots of light in 1962 or 1963. Excerpt from the Expensive Planetarium star chartsSamson encoded the night sky between 22 1/2 degrees north and 22 1/2 degrees south based on American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac data. The planetarium displays all of the stars above fifth magnitude over Cambridge, Massachusetts in their relative brightness. The stars can be fixed or can move from right to left. Written in the PDP-1 assembler , the display got its name from the price of a PDP-1 at the time, about $120,000 in 1962 USD. Its predecessor Expensive Typewriter written by Stephen Piner and improved by Peter Deutsch was the editor which allowed the MIT users to operate the TX-0 and PDP-1 directly. Expensive Typewriter descended from Colossal Typewriter by John McCarthy and Roland Silver. Also during this period, Robert A. Wagner wrote the Expensive Desk Calculator, and David Gross created the Expensive Tape Recorder with help from Alan Kotok. Nearly original Spacewar! can be played on the only functioning PDP-1, restored at the Computer History Museum in 2004-2006. Excerpt: The Nationaal Luchtvaart-Themapark Aviodrome (short also Aviodrome) is a large aerospace museum in The Netherlands located on Lelystad Airport since 2003. Replica of the old Schiphol terminal building from 1928.In 1955 several organisations, such as the airline KLM and aircraft manufacturer Fokker, initiated a foundation called "Stichting voor het Nationaal Luchtvaartmuseum" with the single goal of creating a national aviation museum. The first installment of this aviation museum opened its doors in 1960 on Schiphol airport under the name Aeroplanorama and had only seven aircraft on display. It closed its doors in 1967 and a new museum called Aviodome was opened in 1971 on Schiphol. The main building was a large aluminium geodesic dome designed by Buckminster Fuller, the largest in the world at the time, which housed most of the aircraft on display. Hence the 'dome' in the name Aviodome. Over time, the location became too small for the growing aircraft collection and in 2003 the museum was moved to a new location on Lelystad Airport. The building at Schiphol was demolished and the name was changed to Aviodrome. On the current location, it has three buildings: the main building where most of the aircraft on display are located and where there's a restaurant and a cinema, a replica of the old Schiphol terminal building from 1928 and a hangar for aircraft storage with limited access for visitors. Added to the aviation theme were several artifacts from several Dutch space programs, suc...http://booksllc.net/?id=3501695 ... Read more

Excerpt: Red Issue is a fanzine aimed at Manchester United supporters. The fanzine has been published monthly during the domestic football season since February 1989. The content of the the fanzine is satirical - featuring jokes at the expense of Manchester United's own players in addition to their rival clubs. The fanzine was launched at the end of the 1980s. At the time of the launch, Alex Ferguson had failed to deliver any silverware as team manager and the club were still in a run that would eventually last 26 years without winning England's top division league title. Other United fanzines, Red News (the first United fanzine) and United We Stand, both launched during the same era, and all three remain in circulation. The fanzine contains several regular contributions, starting with the editorial comments inside the front cover reflecting on recent United performances and news. Other regular features are: The rest of the fanzine contains articles about past team exploits, contributions from readers and often comic strips which poke fun at United's rivals such as Manchester City ("Bertie Magoo - The Bitter Blue") and Liverpool ("Sticky Fingers") Proclaiming to be the "Voice of the fans", Red Issue has tried to influence fan campaigns throughout its history - with notable contributions in the defeat of an attempted takeover of the club by Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB and attempts to block the Glazer takeover.
