5-0 out of 5 stars very insightful
"First the Seed" is a wonderfully documented account of the history of agriculture since the "discovery" of America. I found this book when I was doing research on threats to genetic diversity in Mexico under NAFTA and the book gave me an insightful lens to understand the problems that are occuring from the mechenization of agriculture and the patenting of genetic material.

Anyone who is studying food production systems must have this book in their library. ... Read more

Product Description
A thorough synthesis of current knowledge about the ways canopies grow, develop, and function. Only recently have advances in simulation modeling in plants begun to emphasize the structural and functional properties of plant canopies in addition to those of the individual constituent leaves. The book considers these properties in terms of the processes--such as transpiration and photosynthesis--by which the canopy and its aerial environment interact. Topics discussed include the meaning of canopy structure, interception of solar radiation, exchange processes, nitrogen nutrition, leaf demography, leaf movement, tillering and branching, and modeling canopy processes from a wide range of plant communities and geographical locations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Most Complete
I have been using this book as one of my main reference sources ever since it came out. I highly recommend it. Although I wish for a new updated edition. I hope there is one in the making!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Reference
The RHS Index is a must for any hort library.Taxonomy has changed so much in recent years that Hortus Third has long been obsolete.I found this book to be indispensible in my research, aiding me in confidentlynaming thousands of plants.A real bonus is that RHS has alphabeticallyinterspersed common names throughout the latin entries. No more flippingto the back for a separate index!Worth twice the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to any serious gardener
What a great book!I have long sought a book that would provide a handy reference to the extraordinary range of plants out there to help me pick out what will go where in our exurban garden. This book does it.Nothaving photographs is actually a plus of this volume, as it does not giveyou an idealized picture of what your gangly specimens will actually looklike; the textual descriptions are more realistic, I think. ... This book, based on a meeting held jointly with the British Ecological Society and the Association of Applied Biologists, describes the relationship between plants, their communities and the pathogens and pests with which they interact, and contains contributions from the specialists in the fields of plant pathology and ecology. Pests and pathogens play an important role in shaping the plant community, yet man seeks to control these factors for agricultural purposes. An understanding of the complex system which comprises these factors is therefore important. This book is intended for postgraduate students and researchers in agriculture, forestry, plant pathology, entomology, ecology, botany and zoology. ... Read more

Molecular biology techniques have considerably improved our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the control of flower initiation, development, function, and senescence. These processes are extremely important for managing the yield of agricultural crops. The essays in this volume discuss the molecular and genetic control of flower morphogenesis in particular species as well as the role and regulation of gene expression in the development of the male and female gametes in plant reproduction. They also review the considerable variation in the longevity and pattern of senescence of flowers. The book will be of particular interest to those botanists researching floral physiology. ...
