Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume, the tenth in the series, comprises modern treatments for the families and genera of the eudicot orders Sapindales and Cucurbitales. The circumscription of the orders, families and genera conforms to the most recent systematic studies. The family treatments include descriptions of the families and the genera, genera classification keys, discussions of relationships and data on their morphology, reproductive biology, distribution, ecology and economic importance. Sapindales and Cucurbitales, as understood in this volume, comprise 16 families with 637 genera and roughly 9,240 species. Sapindales include large tropical and southern temperate tree families such as the Anacardiaceae, Sapindaceae (these in the modern circumscription, which includes Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae), Meliaceae and Rutaceae, which have long been considered to be closely related. Cucurbitales represent a relatively new ordinal concept; apart from some small woody groups, the order contains two large families, Cucurbitaceae and Begoniaceae, which are predominantly, and likely basically, herbaceous.A detailed treatment of the tropical and southern temperate woody family Myrtaceae (itself comprising 142 genera and 6,700 species) is an addendum to the treatment of the Myrtales in Vol. IX of this series. ... Product Description
This long awaited third edition of Phytochemical Methodsis, as its predecessors, a key tool for undergraduates, researchworkers in plant biochemistry, plant taxonomists and any researchersin related areas where the analysis of organic plant components is keyto their investigations.
Phytochemistry is a rapidly expanding area with new techniques beingdeveloped and existing ones perfected and made easier to incorporateas standard methods in the laboratory. This latest edition includesdescriptions of the most up-to-date methods such as HPLC and theincreasingly sophisticated NMR and related spectral techniques. Othermethods described are the use of NMR to locate substances within theplant cell and the chiral separation of essential oils.
After an introductory chapter on methods of plant analysis, individualchapters describe methods of identifying the different type of plantmolecules: phenolic compounds, terpenoids, organic acids, lipids andrelated compounds, nitrogen compounds, sugar and derivatives andmacromolecules. Different methods are discussed and recommended, andguidance provided for the analysis of compounds of specialphysiological relevance such as endogenous growth regulators, substances of pharmacological interest and screening methods for thedetection of substances for taxonomic purposes. It also includes animportant bibliographic guide to specialized texts.
This comprehensive book constitutes a unique and indispensablepractical guide for any phytochemistry or related laboratory, andprovides hands-on description of experimental techniques so thatstudents and researchers can become familiar with these invaluablemethods. ... Read more

Product Description
The Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants represents the first comprehensive taxonomic treatment of succulents in thirty years. It covers over 9000 taxa of all succulents except Cactaceae.
The volume on dicotyledonous families embraces succulents from 47 families and 161 genera, a further 8 families are shortly mentioned. Thus, a total of over 2000 species and 500 infraspecific taxa are covered. The families Didiereaceae, Fouquieriaceae and Nolanaceae are treated in their entirety - Portulacaceae with nearly all species. Euphorbia, with some 700 species, is the largest genus described. Other frequently cultivated genera covered in this volume include: Othonna and Senecio (Asteraceae), Jatropha and Monadenium (Euphorbiaceae), Pelargonium (Geraniaceae), Adenia (Passifloraceae), Peperomia (Piperaceae), as well as Cissus and Cyphostemma (Vitaceae). The focus is on caudiciform succulents grown in cultivation. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This encyclopaedia contains a comprehensive treatment of the taxonomy of the families and genera of ferns and seed plants. The present volume, the fifth in this series, deals with three major groups of dicotyledons, the Capparales, Malvales, and Non-betalain Caryophyllales. The taxonomy of these groups, which comprise 40 families and 752 genera, is based on the results of the most recent research. This is especially true of the families Cruciferae and Malvaceae, to which more than two thirds of the genera treated in this volume belong. The integration of morphological information and the results of molecular studies have led to a revised classification and have opened the way to an understanding of character evolution in these strongly diversified groups. ... This book examines the literature on red clover since about1985. In each of the 17 chapters, an effort was made to summarize theearlier literature and to integrate the recent findings into thisbackground. The timing is appropriate with the present interest insustainable agriculture, in which red clover was so prominent in thepast. This is the first book to be published which deals solely withthis important forage species.
