2-0 out of 5 stars BLACK & DECKER GUIDE IS NO USE FOR THE UK
I was so disapointed as I didn't recognise any of the diagrams as theis book looks like its written for the USA/Canadian market NOT for the UK so it has not been of any use to me. I assumed as I was ordering from the UK, that it would be suitable. I would like to return it, if I knew how

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - buy it!
This book is great - it offers color photos with detailed instructions. I used this book to remodel my entire kitchen - some plumbing work was involved - and everything I needed was in here. It even has a good section about PEX water system - new and advanced system. It has DVD, but of course no time to view DVD while your kitchen is apart. Highly recomend!

The book is great. It came in excellent condition and in a very timely matter. Very happy with the order.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing book
Because of the great reviews I decided to purchase this book and was very glad I did. This book gave me the confidence to tackle projects that I normally would have paid someone to do.

I was always very nervous about sweating copper pipe together, but I followed the excellent step by step instructions and was amazed at how easy it was.The included DVD is also excellent as well showing very informative video of various projects.

I highly recommend this book for the beginner on up.

The instructions and pictures were just right for small projects.

While, larger projects had good pictures; sometimes, the instructions were less plentiful.

Overall, a excellent introduction to household plumbing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I have many of the Stanley complete books, and they are excellent. They provide a wealth of pictures and info for big and small projects. They provide a step-by-step guide for how to fix, remodel, or improve everything around the house. I highly recommend the electrical one too!

4-0 out of 5 stars good
Good for homeowners needing to do basic plumbing and repairs and a good reference book to have in general. You're not going to be a professional plumber after reading it but that isn't the point. I was able to do quite a few repairs after referencing the book just once. I am an electrician and being around the trade definately makes it easier to pick up but this book will help any average Joe stop a few leaks and make some basic fixes(even if it's temp until you can have a pro show up) The clear photos help. Let's face it..plumbing isn't something you notice until it's not working(much like electricity) But I would recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick reference for DIYer
I bought this book after reading various internet sites that answered DIY plumbing questions. The book is convinient, easy to follow for a person who is not in the trade. It is limited to standard applications such as kitchen and bathroom areasbut then how many times are you concerned about an ouside BBQ sink?

5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference book for plumbing codes
This book has all the required code information I was looking for.It has very clear illustrations that show what the codes state.I am very sastisfied with the book.I am glade I purchased it."A must" for anyone that is not a plumber and wants to do there own work.A+++++ rated by me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I've used the previous edition extensively and this latest edition contains more info on items I install including on-demand water heaters.Clear and easy to find info you want. Can't praise it enough!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for basics
This guide answered most of my basic questions I had about replacing a sewer pipe. Although it did not indicate support material type (softfill, sand, etc...) or prefered methods for hydrotesting. It is worth the money and will sometimes show you things you might be forgetting. Any unanswered questions I had I covered with the city inspection department.

3-0 out of 5 stars Code Check, Plumbing - 3rd Edition
A handy reference for all phases of residential plumbing.Welll presented for homeowner use. Reference to code paragraphs is extensive but useless without a copy of the code.Requires contacting the local plumbing inspector's office to determing whether your area goes by the International Residential Code or the Uniform Plumbing Code.Restrictions in this book are given for both codes.

If you have an older edition be wary as numerious details of the codes changed from the second edition to this third edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for all your plumbing woes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Laying Pipe
When I'm at the bar knocking back a few drinks, I love to talk politics with people. Even with complete strangers. I get immense enjoyment telling everyone how my political viewpoints are right and that everyone with different political viewpoints than mine are wrong.

After a while people grew tired of my act and nobody would take me seriously anymore. Then this "Joe the Plumber" fool comes on the scene and steals all my thunder.I found a great deal of pride in being the voice of the every-man, then this dude from Ohio comes out of nowhere and suddenly he's on the TV every five seconds. He was even a topic of discussion during the Presidential Debates!

While watching the debates I couldn't help but think:

That should be ME up there!

If having knowledge of plumbing is what it's going to take to get my political musings out in the public, well then it's time for me to learn a little something about plumbing.

With the election just a couple of days away I knew that my plumbing lesson had to be quick and thorough.I can hold my own when it comes to discussions about politics, so I needed to make sure I knew my stuff when it came to plumbing, too. That's why I knew "Plumbing Do-It-Yourself For Dummies" was the perfect book for me.

In just a few hours I learned all about how to stop toilet tanks from sweating, how to repair and upgrade all kinds of faucets, even how to fill my very own plumbing toolbox with all of the appropriate tools and safety equipment.

The easy-to-follow, detailed instructions of "Plumbing Do-It-Yourself For Dummies" made learning plumbing techniques a snap.

With the plumbing lesson out of the way all I need to do now is get myself in front of one those Presidential candidates (and a television camera) and hope he asks me what I think about healthcare reform. Then the people of America can finally hear my voice, and hopefully they'll be ignorant and naive enough to vote for who I tell them to vote for. After all, I represent the every-man and they should listen to every word I have to say, not these stupid Presidential candidates.

God Bless America!

P.S. Call "chatchi the Plumber" for all of your plumbing and political needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the "home repair challenged" like me...
If you've hung around my blog very much, you're well aware of the fact that me and home repair projects don't normally mix.I don't know what it is, but you put hardware in my hands, and I become a bumbling idiot.Plumbing Do-It-Yourself For Dummies by Donald R. Prestly is the *perfect* approach to plumbing fix-it jobs for someone like me.It's short, concise, has plenty of pictures, and explains just enough to make me think that it's possible to pull off the unlikely/impossible...a plumbing repair that doesn't stretch into a multi-hour marathon of frustration and humiliation.

Part 5 - The Part of Tens: Ten Tips for Plumbing Success; Ten Tips for Dealing with Problematic Pipes; Ten Safety Considerations
Index

The first part of the book starts out with the general layout of a household plumbing system, and why things like drain, waste, and vent systems are necessary. He also goes into what tools are essential when it comes to plumbing repairs. That's probably the first really helpful thing for me, as my tool collection is..."lacking", and going to a store doesn't necessarily tellyou why you'd need something like a spud wrench. The following sections get into the details of specific repair jobs, complete with photos (not generalized line drawings), a list of tools you'll need, materials you'll have to use, and how long it *should* take.Knowing me, I'd double that last figure, and then double it again. And if I beat that time, I'd be feeling real "manly".:)I really wish I'd have had this book when we replaced our toilet. My wife and I would have resumed talking to each other much sooner...

The Part of Tens section is also useful for those little gems that you don't think of when you start a project...like trying to start and finish your project during store hours so you don't end up stuck overnight with no toilet or water pressure in the house. Also there's the advice to buy the *right* tools for the job at hand, and add to the collection as you do new projects.I won't tell you what I've ended up using pipe wrenches for when certain other tools are not available to me.

I'm sure all the home repair experts are probably thinking I'm a major wuss when it comes to fixing stuff. They'd be right. But with a book like this, I'm inspired to at least give the repair a try before springing for the cost of a professional.Although the whole propane blow-torch thing?I don't think so... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I'm not a professional plumber but a do it yourselfer. It's my opinion that the gentlemen that wrote this book is a professional book writer rather than someone that is knowlegable on the subject or ever plumbed a house. I purchased the book to understand the problems associated with galvonic corrision (a problem associated with dissimilar metals being ajoined). The book never addressed the consequences that can occur when copper/brass and galvanized/iron pipe are connected. There are solutions to this problem but he never addresses it. Do yourself a favor and do an internet search concerning galvonic corrosion before installing a new hot water heater and you'll get the information that was omitted from this book. It'll save you a ton of money later on and alot of heartache.

His profile states that he is also a master electrician and publishes books on that subject. Hope those books are better than this one.

Customer Reviews (10)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it's intended for. Good foundation of knowledge.
I read some of the reviews below and was surprised. I liked this book a lot.

This book contains everything you will need for most common, and some not-so-common problems you will encounter while plumbing.

A review below talks about that there is nothing about Septic and leach lines. Probably because first off you have to get a $5,000 soil test, and get a system designed by an engineer based on your perc test. You will not be doing that in a weekend, unless you do it illegally. Not to mention you better have a back-hoe, or do an above ground engineered system. Leave that to someone who does it every day, or look up the codes. That has many local niche codes too, depending on the state/county.

I ready the "By Pros, for Pros" series as a "help" book for new, or learning plumbers and homeowners who want to do a professional job. You also mock that a professional would need it, if you get a good one, he probably DOES need it. Many plumbers are very experienced in SOME, BUT NOT ALL areas of plumbing. I helped a friend in the country and am TERRIBLE WITH WELLS, because I never work with them or on them (I live in the city).

If you think this book is not good, check out the foundation book.

This book has many good in depth articles, and would assist even someone with low to moderate skills in many plumbing tasks.

I recommend it for homeowners, plumbers apprentices, and as reference for most plumbers.

Even you old know-it-all guys could learn something, try and keep yourself up to date or your skills will become outdated. Codes and standard practice change.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong if you are a beginner
Plumbing by Rex Cauldwell reads like a good book for a beginner to learn about plumbing.

Here is the Table of Contents : 1 Overview, What the book covers in 7 pages; 2 Wells and Pumps in 41 pages; 3 Utility Water in 24 pages; 4 Working with In-House Pipe in 33 pages; 5 Hot Water in 35 pages; 6 Drain and Vent Rough In in 28 pages; 7 Pressure Pipe Rough In in 17 pages; 8 Finish Plumbing in 29 pages; 9 Appendix in 5 parts on Tools , on Alternate Connection Systems, on Charts and Tables, on Codes and on the Disabilities Act Guidelines in 29 pages . There is an Index .

Yes, a great emphasis on wells and pumps, followed by hot water , in house pipe and finish plumbing. These 4 items were his passions .

It is the rare page that does not produce color photos and drawings with plenty of tables when necessary.

It is a MODERN book ( 2006 ) and covers plastic, CPVC, PEX.

The language is easy to read ; here is a paragraph taken from the chapter on In-House Pipe : " Years ago, when my uncle taught me the trade, galvanized and copper were the only pipes he put in people's houses. Sometime later, along came CPVC, or plastic pipe. After that came polybutylene, or PB. Now we have PEX. "

Go for it !

4-0 out of 5 stars best book for my needs
When our water heater died I tried to diagnose what was wrong and spent six hours almost pulling my hair out.I went to a local bookstore looking for some guidance and this is the book I brought home. All the other books told me how to do things but not what to do if something was wrong or how to fix someone's botched work.Rex's book stood out for me.It doesn't cover everything (some pros have mentioned the shortcomings) but as a homeowner it covered everything I need to know.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ought to be called basic plumbing for the homeowner
I thought this book was for pro's. Instead it reads like a book for a beginner. It was all basic I thought and the author talks to you like you are not a pro.

1-0 out of 5 stars Plumbing very general
This book gives a brief overview of plumbing, it won't solve many of your problems as it doesn't go into anything in too much depth. Good if you need a general knowledge but there are better guides online from the manufacturer's for less or free. It does talk about some codes but that varies so much across the country as to be useless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Order
This is the second time I ordered this book. The first (from another supplier) was never received since my local PO gave the book to someone else! This time the book arrived promptly and in better condition than described.Very good seller.
The book itself is quite dated (cost less than $2.00) and since it deals with timeless basics, it has been very helpful.Due to the infancy of PVC plumbing when this book was first published, the author's dislike for it is evident in what he DOESN'T say.(Must have been a Union Plumber in his earlier years!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not another do it yourself book.
Basic Plumbing with illustrations is not just another how to book.
The Author, Howard C. Massey is a Master plumber,in so being he is amply
qualified to explain in great detail how a plumbing system in buildings work.

This is the text book of choice for the college apprenticeship plumbing course
at Lane Community College in Eugene,Oregon.
You may not be a plumber after reading this book, but you will know why things are done the way
the author describes them to be done. This book explains the correct way to do a job and in most
cases meets local and national building codes. Always check with local authorities and codes before
starting a plumbing project.

5-0 out of 5 stars quality reference material
Basic Plumbing with Illustrations is a handy reference book for designers, engineers, and draftsmen. There are a lot of illustrated examples showing best practices when laying out residential and light commercial plumbing that minimize extra fittings, are UPC compliant, and work for stacked and flat systems.
Also handy are rough-in dimensions for common fixtures, drain, waste and vent sizing charts, and cold and hot water supply sizing info. that includes a neat explanation of solar hot water heating methods.
this reference goes hand in hand with another Massey authored Publication entitled "Planning, Drain, Waste, and Vent Systems".

Everything you ever wanted to know and more about what, where, when and how to use the proper fastener for your project, be it car, plane, boat or cart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carroll Smith's Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook
A very in-depth dissertation on bolt design, types and applications along with all the hardware and plumbing needed in a race car.Carroll was the master race engineer with decades of experience and knowledge in the sport.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful resource
This a must have resource for people who are not professionals yet would like to figure out how and why race cars are kept together the way the are (or why they are not). While similar books are often written in an - to be kind - ill defined language, this one is in plain English. In fact the author even endeavors to render the subject somewhat entertaining while literally dealing with nuts and bolts.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is very very good
This book is VERY good, it's informative, comprehensive, fun to read and goes a long way to improving your understanding of the "whys" rather than just the "hows". It's an excelent resource for someone looking to build their own race car. Anyone looking to attach something to something else or move a fluid from one place to another will get something out of this book. As an added bonus in the years since it was first written most of the fasteners that the author found hard to find have become available easily online.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book -- especially venting
I needed this book to help figure out a complex venting issue and it served the purpose well. Allowed me to avoid hiring a plumber at considerable expense. Would recommmend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information for the practical
Lots of comprehensive, practical information for a serious DIY'er!Most of the more advanced plumbing books are textbooks and code guides aimed at people trying to pass tests, not at people trying to actually build something. This is the book that explained the logic of when to use sweep vs. normal bends, and shows several detailed diagrams of how to arrange specific fittings to drain and vent fixtures in different ways, depending on layout.
It could use an update, as it doesn't even mention PEX water supply piping and talks a lot about cast iron DWV.Fortunately, PEX isn't rocket science and a good waste system is the same configuration, no matter what material you choose.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Plumbing book I've ever bought
Definitive, this is the best book I've bought. It explain best about service piping, vents, how to, materials, etc. I trully hghly recommend this great value book. Thanks very much Peter Hemp.

5-0 out of 5 stars a "must have" for either the do-it-yourselfer or aspiring professional
When I set out to build my own home I purchased several books on plumbing from the local Books-A-Million and local home improvement centers. But this one, which was recommended by a friend, tops them all. This book, along with a copy of your local code, is about all you need to do the rough-in plumbing on new residential construction.I frequently carried it with me to the building site to refer to when necessary. There is an obvious bias toward copper in the book. But the reader needs to remember that the book was written at a time when copper prices were more reasonable than they are today.According to my local plumbing supplier, there's hardly a professional plumber remaining in our city that still does copper. They've all been converted over to CPVC.Maybe copper will become popular again when prices come back down. But the book is still a valuable resource regardless of whether you do copper or CPVC, for either the do-it-yourselfer or the aspiring professional plumber. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not enough substance
I need to see more technical and/or practical details if a book was to serve as a guide when designing, installing or improving marine water and plumbing systems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic book, not helpful
Just covers a basic explaination of marine plumbing. Was expecting more details and explaination of system variations, troubleshooting/problem solving, etc. I wouldn't waste your $.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOTHING NEW OR INSITEFUL
I am restoring an older boat and wanted to gain more knowledge about water and waste systems. You can waste a lot of money on a boat and this book is a good example. Small,100 page (most of them half blank) paperback that contains nothing that you can't find easily online. Holding tanks - "The biggest issue for boaters is selecting the right sized tank". Duh. He does not offer any guide as to the size of tank for a certain no. of people etc. I am so upset that I wasted my money on this book hoping that it would be a real guide to plumbing and water systems. It isn't.

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth it
I purchased this book hoping to have a good reference volume for the water systems on my sailboat. This book is not it. Its kind of like an outline for what such a book would look like if an author took the time to actually write it. There is a paucity of useful diagrams, most pages in the book don't even fill the entire page. Over half of the pages don't have any written or printed material on more that half a page. This is enough material in this book to complete a small pamphlet and that's about it. I won't be purchasing any other John C. Payne books any time soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and thoroughly 'user friendly' instructional compendium
Every owner of a sailing ship or yacht needs to understand the sanitation and water systems that are an integral part of their craft. John C. The result is the comprehensive and thoroughly 'user friendly' instructional compendium "Understanding Boat Plumbing And Water Systems" as an concise, compact, and fully illustrated shipboard reference. Also very highly recommended for personal, professional, academic, and library Nautical Reference collections and supplemental reading lists is John C. 2-0 out of 5 stars lack details
i was hoping to get little more information on some of the specific topics that I didnot find in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book...Excellent seller
The book is quite useful, practical, and easy to use/understand.More than anything I would like to point out the seller [...] as being one of the few sellers that care about the product and the buyer.I have purchased many books from amazon (trying to save $), and only to have the book arrive in a bubble envelope with damaged/squished corners and scratches on the face.I thought this was the trade-off for the lower price.Humblelight took care in wrapping the book (to prevent moisture damage) and used a simple, but very effective cardboard book-wrap for protection.AND... The inside of the book had a little piece of paper stating "If theres a problem...we can resolve your concern to a satisfyiing outcome."Because the book arrived on time, at the lowest price available, and in the best possible condition, there was NO NEED to contact the seller. The only drawback was the package was not trackable, but I would trade this anytime for the quality of service/condition of product that was received.I will look to this website first for my next book purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for non-plumbers
I recently hauled this book out of my bookcase to replace some faucets in the bathroom sink.Granted, the Moen kit was exemplary in its instructions and simplicity, but you still might find yourself without the necessary tools or tips to get the job done, much less done in time for dinner.

The book really saved me some time and effort. On its advice, I picked up a basin wrench, and this alone saved the job.I would never have gotten the old hardware off, much less gotten the new hardware on, without it.It also outlined the need for flexible feed hoses, wrapping the new faucet feeds before installing (which I forgot to do, but the book did its part and told me about it), and outlining the basics step by step.

Coupled with a most excellent purely-pictorial instruction manual in the Moen kit, I was able to remove the old leaky faucets, install the new ones, and not have to hire a plumber.

The book could be even bigger and include a little more depth, but this is a highly-recommended resource and every non-contractor or non-handy individual should own it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plumbing 1 2 3

1-0 out of 5 stars Instead get Black & Decker's "The Complete Guide to Home Plumbing"
This book merits a 1, maybe a 2, certainly not a 3 out of 10.I acquired two guides for do-it-yourself plumbing of my new home construction. Not one time did I reference the Home Depot "Plumbing 1-2-3."Luckily, I also had a copy of Black & Decker's "The Complete Guide to Home Plumbing" and referrenced it like a TV Preacher leans on his Bible.

Unfortunately, Home Depot has a ready outlet - it's equally disorderly stores - to hock this poorly organized, code deficient reference book. For all but a few of the simplest jobs, this book is useless.

If I were a betting man, I'd wager that Home Depot rather tried to immitate better books on Home Plumbing, but, as with all hacks, instead they butchered a forgery into print. If you're stuck with a copy of this book, as I am, use it for Home Heating 1-2-3 this winter.

Tough luck Home Depot, not only are your stores outfitted with an army of poorly motivated workers, it appears you also stockade a cadre of lousy writers.

This book was excellent. Written by a knowledgeable physician in a relaxed informative style, her explanations are clear and understandable. Ladies, if you have a dropped uterus (you'd be surprised how many women do) read this book first! You probably don't need a hysterectomy. You also want to read this book if you suffer from a dropped bladder, your vagina is loose, or you want to know what treatments are available to, among other things, improve your sex life.Eminently readable, informative and wise, this book should be issued as a textbook for sex education classes, so thoroughly does it cover the subject of the female anatomy.Dr. Romanzi, I Kegel as I write this. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly fascinating read...
I picked this book up because I needed to learn about fasteners and fluid plumbing for a Ghia I'm fixing. I'd expected this to be a necessary but boring slog of a read.

If you're looking for a book on this subject, this is the one.
