5-0 out of 5 stars Plumbing: Design and Installation
I ordered this used book for a friend and was pleased with the condition.
It was in perfect condition. Very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A plumbing teacher'sreview
I use this book often in the shop/classroom.I think it is an excellent teaching aid when used in conjunction with the associated workbook. My only problem is converting some of the Minn. code into Massachusetts code where I teach. Several of the chapters deal specifically with plumbing traps, materials and plumbing fixtures, which I like. The workbook does a great job of using many different testing methods including True/False, multiple choice, essay questions, math and isometric sketching. In future editions I would love to see more info on the history of the trade, drawings/drafting and heating appliances. All in all, this is the best teaching book out there and I have looked through them all!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good, solid book on plumbing
I first read and used this book in the US Navy Seabee training unit I was an instructor at in 1996. Being based on the Minnesota plumbing code, which is by far the most stringent in the country, it was a very good reference from which to learn and to teach. The company I work for now issues that same book to all new plumbers and I even keep a copy in the truck as a reference in the field. The companion workbook is a great tool also. If you're looking for a layman's breakdown of the MN code, this is it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I had hoped for.
I was looking for a reference book that had both IPC and UPC requirements with cross-references.This book has neither the Codes or cross references. It appears to be a text book to be used in conjuction with separate Code manuals. It is a failure at that, as well. There are endless pages that just rehash what is in the Codes without adding clarification or depth to what is already presented in the Code books.

An active plumber or plumbing student/apprentice would be much better served by just buying the Code books and working through them on their own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful purchase
We are building a new house and I am puting in the plumbing system. I do not want to redo the work when it is inspected, therefore obtaining this book was a necessity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
Easy to use, very practical stuff. Gets right to the heart of the matter. I am a professional and use the Code Check books often.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
Excellent knowledge base for the DIY and pro. This series of books will show you everything you need to know to do it right the first time and pass those crucial inspections.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
When it was difficult to get to the library to view the Uniform Plumbing Code, I used this at home to study for an exam. I was rudely surprised when I got to the libary, compared the references to the code, and found that this guide was riddled with errors. It serves a purpose as it alerts the user to possible code issues, but you must check all references. The codes are expensive but not as expensive as counting on this guide might be.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a plumbing instructor thinks.
Code check has helped me immensely. I teach residential plumbing for a 150+ employee 1500+ homes a year Northern California company and have found that the info in C.C. is formatted in such a way that my apprentice plumbers can easily find info they need. They seldom need clarification. All codes cited are referenced with the UPC and IRC section numbers for easy look up.(IRC not used here in NorCal but nice for those who need it) Diagrams are simple and clear. C.C. is laminated and tough. Built for in the field use.I love this book. Holding back the fifth star due to spanish version unavailability. ... Read more

Product Description
You can keep your "country plumbing" working day after day, year after year.Gerry Hartigan who has been installing and servicing septic tanks for twenty-five years, says "I'm still amazed to find out how little people actually know about their home sewage disposal systems. As Bismarck said, 'The less people know about politics and making sausages, the better they sleep at night.'Perhaps this is also true of septic tanks."
However, with increasing numbers of people moving to rural areas, it's more important than ever to understand more about what is generally referred to as "country plumbing." ... Read more

Customer Reviews (4)

5-0 out of 5 stars Bathroom reading at its most instructive
We are currently living with a septic system, and I thought it was about time I learned something about them. This book is perfect for my needs:it is short, very informative, and even hilarious at times. My only prior knowledge of septic systems was acquired during childhood: our house in a rural village sat in the lowest point of our neighborhood (a swamp, actually) and everyone else's septic system used to drain down into our basement in the spring.I can't begin to tell you how happy we were when the village finally built a municipal sewage system.

This book explains very clearly how to deal with emergencies, which is probably the first thing we country plumbing folks need to know.

(I also discovered we're using a sink plunger on the toilet, and should go out and buy one with the circular thingy in the middle.)

There are very clear instructions and diagrams on (1) how to build your own septic system; (2) how to find your septic tank if you moved into a house where the subject hadn't been raised; (3) how to maintain your septic system; (4) what to do if something goes wrong (this part of the book gets down and dirty:never, ever open something called a 'cleanout plug' quickly.)

"Country Plumbing" also explains how to build a good privy. Here is my favorite bit of advice on this subject:

"If the privy is to have a lot of traffic, attach a large plastic funnel to the wall, with a short plastic pipe running into the main hole. This will help tall soldiers with short rifles to score better, and improve the area around the seat considerably."

This book is bathroom reading at its most instructive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid guide to septic management, and a top pick
Not all houses were built with the idea of plumbing in mind. "Country Plumbing: Living with a Septic System" is a guide for those in those houses designed before modern plumbing and the reality of having to live with the solution many turn to - a septic system. An updated edition, this guide elaborates on what people need to know to legally, responsibly, and sanitarily deal with their own waste. "Country Plumbing" is a solid guide to septic management, and a top pick.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but dated
This book is informative as far as it goes and might be most useful for someone with an older system. But it was written in the early 1980s.A lot has changed since then.In particular, the book doesn't cover any ofthe newer systems that are used more and more nowadays in some parts of thecountry -- sand mounds, aeration systems, lagoons, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you own a septic system, you need this book
Where else does one find out about the care and feeding--literally--of a septic system? This book is humorously written by an author who clearly knows his, um, feces.Having just bought a house with a septic system, Iam finally relieved to find a book that sheds light on the dark necessityof living in the country. This could become a conversation piece in ourneighborhood. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars informative for a newcomer
the book was more clear and direct then what my teacher was trying to explain to me. It helped me through class. I would reccommend this if you are just starting out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors and misinformation!
I bought this book only because it was suggested reading for the master license exam in SC.I was amazed to find all the bad technical information.Within 30 pages I found a dozen or so errors, and that was just an example.I e-mailed the publisher with specific examples, and have yet to hear a response.
If you are trying to learn plumbing this is not the book for you, and if you have a couple of years of experience under your belt this book is below your level of experience. In other words, do not waste your money on this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably good for classroom use
I bought this book to teach myself plumbing skills, not for use in a classroom, but just for DIY information to maintain my home and rental property. I find that hiring plumbers is very expensive. It has a good overview of the plumbing field and introduces many topics such as connecting a home to the public sewer and water supply, a good discussion of fittings, and information on installing fixtures.

I believe the book could have been much longer (compare this book's 600 pages to Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - about 1200 pages)which would have allowed for more in depth coverage. I found myself wanting more detail in most of the 30 rather short chapters.

The book probably works OK in a classroom with an instructor nearby to fill in the gaps and show actual examples of the pipe, fittings, fixtures, etc. In some cases terms are used before being defined and terms are used inconsistently which makes it hard for the self learner. Some of the explanations seem confusing.

The book also probably works OK for an apprentice plumber who is working in the field. However it is probably not the best book for the self learner due to its lack of complete detail of the topics covered.

The book is professionally presented with many color pictures, diagrams, etc. There are some typos but most are minor and do not affect the book's readability. Questions at the end of each chapter are good for assessing your understanding.

I feel this book and many trips to Home Depot will help save me money on future plumbing jobs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Code book comic book
This came highly recommended.
The cartoons are professionally done, but I found them distracting. When you need code information, you need facts not comic illustrations.
It should be noted that this is only a reference guide to help someone find code numbers in a real NEC book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Code Check Complete - Two Thumbs Up

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Book
This is a great reference that doesn't take up much space and is well worth the price.Covers carpentry, mechanical, electrical and plumbing which as a remodeling carpenter I have to reference fairly frequently.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
Nice format but, don't assume they will release new sections as the code is updated. This version is already outdated as it's based on the 2005 electrical code.It also has may typos and mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book
WOW! This book is spot on with understanding the plumbing business; ironically enough this book would help any future business owner in any form of business not just plumbing. The author, M. Scott Gregg, doesn't so much teach but inform. I didn't know what to expect when I purchased 'Profitable Plumbing' but I can tell you it far surpassed any expectation that I had.

The author couldn't be any closer to the truth when he stated the following:

"You must chase your mistakes before your mistakes chase you"
"Never, never, never lower the price for your job without taking something away from it!"

But the greatest recommendation in this book is when Gregg suggests reading the Book of Proverbs for your guidance with your business and life.

This book did more than the title suggested; it also opened my eyes to purpose of life...and that is helping others with a smile.

Great book!

I bought the Dewalt plumbing licensing exam guide and immediatley noticed problems. The text is taught wrong for one, giving the wrong formulas for volume of a cylinder. Second, the first practice test I took for the math section had 5 problems that I answered correct, however, the answers in the book stated they were wrong. So basically, you have to proofread the book as your trying to learn. You do not know if what you are learning is actually right. I do not want to keep studying from this book when the first 25 pages are so screwed up. I contacted someone and they were aware of the problems but did nothing to solve them. In fact, they faxed me a sheet they said were the corrections, but the sheet only solved 2 out of the 5 errors in the first section.I don't even want to know how much stuff is incorrect in the remaining 95% of the book. Codes are a fact of life for do-it-yourselfers, but getting good information on codes can be a nightmare. Anyone who has ever opened a code book (or even a code interpretation book) looking for the answer to a building, wiring or plumbing question has found the same thing: a lot of arcane, technical words and cross-referencing, pages of meaningless charts, but no information that make sense. Codes for Homeowners combines decades of experience by author and IRC-certified home inspector Bruce Barker with Creative Publishing’s famous studio photography, and the result is the first truly clear and easy to use codes reference book for homeowners and tradesmen alike. Current with 2009 International Residential Code (IRC).
