Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here.

Chapters: Pneumonia, Intrauterine Hypoxia, Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Persistent Fetal Circulation, Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn, Wilson-Mikity Syndrome. Excerpt:Infant respiratory distress syndrome Infant respiratory distress syndrome ( IRDS ), also called neonatal respiratory distress syndrome or respiratory distress syndrome of newborn , previously called hyaline membrane disease , is a syndrome caused in premature infants by developmental insufficiency of surfactant production and structural immaturity in the lungs . It can also result from a genetic problem with the production of surfactant associated proteins. RDS affects about 1 % of newborn infants and is the leading cause of death in preterm infants. The incidence decreases with advancing gestational age , from about 50 % in babies born at 26 28 weeks, to about 25 % at 30 31 weeks. The syndrome is more frequent in infants of diabetic mothers and in the second born of premature twins. IRDS is distinct from pulmonary hypoplasia , another leading cause of neonatal death that involves respiratory distress. Clinical course Respiratory distress syndrome begins shortly after birth and is manifest by tachypnea , tachycardia , chest wall retractions (recession), expiratory grunting, flaring of the nostrils and cyanosis during breathing efforts. As the disease progresses, the baby may develop ventilatory failure (rising carbon dioxide concentrations in the blood), and prolonged cessations of breathing ("apnea "). Whether treated or not, the clinical course for the acute disease lasts about 2 to 3 days. During the first, the patient worsens and requires more support. During the second the baby may be remarkably stable on adequate support and resolution is noted during the third day, heralded by a prompt diuresis. Despite ... ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! An antimicrobial is a substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoans, as well as destroying viruses. Antimicrobial drugs either kill microbes (microbicidal) or prevent the growth of microbes (microbistatic). Disinfectants are antimicrobial substances used on non-living objects. The history of antimicrobials begins with the observations of Pasteur and Joubert, who discovered that one type of bacteria could prevent the growth of another. They did not know at that time that the reason one bacterium failed to grow was that the other bacterium was producing an antibiotic. Technically, antibiotics are only those substances that are produced by one microorganism that kill, or prevent the growth, of another microorganism. Of course, in today's common usage, the term antibiotic is used to refer to almost any drug that cures a bacterial infection. Antimicrobials include not just antibiotics, but synthetically formed compounds as well. ... Read more

Product Description
Infectious acquired in the Intensive Care Unit are of daily concern for the intensivist. Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a nosocomial, usually bacterial pneumonia that seems both frequent and often deadly in the critically ill patient. Despite the contagious progress in understanding the pathogenesis and risk factors for VAP, prevention remains a thankless task. Bacteria may gain entrance into the lungs by several mechanisms. Since aspiration of oropharyngeal contents is considered the most common route of entry for VAP, measures reducing the burden of bacterial colonization of the aerodigestive tract may ultimately reduce the incidence of VAP. ...
