Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A powiat is the second-level unit of local government and administration in Poland, equivalent to a county, district or prefecture (LAU-1, formerly NUTS-4) in other countries. The term powiat is most often translated into English as "county", although other terms are also sometimes used. It is arguably preferred to leave such national labels for levels of government untranslated to avoid the false suggestion of resemblance to e.g. the UK structure of government (Bankauskaite et al. 2007). A powiat is part of a larger unit or province called a voivodeship (Polish województwo). In turn a powiat is usually subdivided into gminas (sometimes called municipalities or communes). However the more important towns and cities function as separate counties in their own right, with no subdivision into gminas. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Polish government-in-exile, formally known as the Government of the Republic of Poland in Exile (Polish: ), was the government in exile of Poland formed in the aftermath of the Invasion of Poland of September 1939, and the subsequent occupation of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, which brought to an end the Second Polish Republic founded in 1918. Though largely unrecognized and without effective power after the end of World War II, it remained in existence until the end of Communist rule in Poland in 1990, in opposition to the People's Republic of Poland, a Soviet satellite state, when it formally passed on its responsibilities to the new government. Product Description
Two decades after the fall of Communist rule, the events of 1989 still fascinate historians, social and political scientists. Many point out that 1989 has become a symbolic date for Europe. On the occasion of the accession of the new member states to the European Union, which had known Communist dictatorship, many politicians stressed that 1989 marked the beginning of the process which completed on 1st May 2004. This book analyses the transfer of power away from Communist governments in two countries of the former Soviet bloc. The core of this work is focused on the dissolution of Communist rule in Poland and Czechoslovakia in 1989 and on the background of these events. This project draws on recently released materials in Warsaw and Prague archives which allow us to focus attention on the negotiation process in Poland and the rapid dissolution of Communist regime in Czechoslovakia. The book draws on historical material but also on theoretical literature on transition from the field of political science. The author hopes that this work will be useful not only for the experts in the field, students and researchers but also anyone interested in the recent history of Europe. ... Read more

From the supplier: The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe has given rise to the need for an overhaul of the local government systems in the former Eastern Bloc nations since their old centralized systems effectively made local level decisions impossible. The Government Finance Officers Assn (GFOA) participated in a program designed to help these nations rebuild their local government structures. The experiences of the GFOA training team in Poland were presented.

Product Description

Rebellious Satellite: Poland 1956 offers a social history of the mass movements that prompted political change and altered Polish-Soviet relations in 1956 but avoided a Soviet armed response. Pawel Machcewicz focuses on the people's expression of grievances, and even riots—as opposed to "top-level" activities such as internal Communist Party struggles. He carefully depicts the protests that took place in Poznan in June 1956 and across Poland the following October and November.

The manuscript is based largely on new archival materials (mainly Party and security apparatus documents) that were originally prepared to provide detailed information to the Party leadership about what was happening on the ground. The book includes a selection of photographs from Poznan in June 1956 taken secretly by the police.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very highly recommended addition to academic library 20th Century European History collections
In 1956 most of eastern Europe in general, and Poland in particular, was firmly under the control of the Soviet Union and had been from the last year of the World War II as the Russian army pushed back the German occupation troops from Polish territory. But that year also saw a mass political movement as Polish citizens sought to change Polish-Soviet relations while averting a Soviet military-backed Communist Party suppression. Drawing upon newly available archival documents of the Polish communist party leadership (including photographs from Pozan in June 1956 taken by the police), "Rebellious Satellite: Poland 1956" by Pawel Machecwicz (Institute of Political Studies, Warsaw, Poland) provides an informed and informative history of the political opposition movements that took place in Pozan in June of 1956 and continued elsewhere in Poland through October and November. A superbly researched and deftly written detailed account, "Rebellious Satellite: Poland 1956" is a very highly recommended addition to academic library 20th Century European History collections. ... Product Description
One can think of countries that traversed the twentieth century free from war, revolution, or social upheaval. Such countries, however, are far outnumbered by those that struggled, often constantly, with severe internal conflicts, fought in bloody wars, or were attacked by their neighbors and deprived of their sovereignty. Poland is one of the more startling examples of a country subjected to a steady stream of trials and tribulations from Hitler's Nazi Germany through decades of Soviet repression. The Spring Will Be Ours, by one of Poland's leading historians, is the first book written after the collapse of state socialism in 1989 to tell this dramatic story based on research in newly declassified records. The Spring Will Be Ours focuses on the turbulent half century from the outbreak of World War II in 1939, which started the chain of events that would lead to the communist takeover of Poland, to 1989, when futile attempts to reform the communist system gave way to its total transformation. Paczkowski shows how the communists captured and consolidated power, describes their use of terror and propaganda, and illuminates the changes that took place within the governing elite. He also documents the political opposition to the regime--both inside Poland and abroad--that resulted in upheavals in 1956, 1968, 1970, 1976, and 1980. His narrative makes evident the pressures that the elite felt from above, from Moscow, and from below, from the population and from within the party. The history of Poland and the Poles is of special interest because on numerous occasions in the twentieth century this relatively small country influenced developments on a global scale. First published in Poland in 1995, The Spring Will Be Ours has been translated into several other languages. For this edition, translated by Jane Cave, Paczkowski has added an introductory chapter on Poland's twenty years of independence prior to 1939 and an extensive postscript exploring the changes that have taken place since the fall of communism in 1989. A bibliography of English-language works, prepared by Padraic Kenney, makes this book an indispensable starting point for anyone seeking to understand the remarkable course of events that brought an independent Poland into the twenty-first century. ...
