1-0 out of 5 stars Polish or English?
What's good about this course? Over 3 and 1 half hours of recorded material.
What's bad? At least half of the recording is in English. There is no way to effectively eliminate this: i.e., no way to repeat the Polish without listening to the English. This a chronic problem with Teach Yourself language courses. In the "complete" courses, one must listen to someone reading, in English, something that is printed in the text. Do they think we can't read? Why not give recordings entirely in the "target language"? Teach Yourself should improve their format. I found this product too irritating to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!!
Great if you have Polish-American kids. I have one and sent one to Poland to my cousin. We love this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good graphics helpful for kids to learn
I learned about this book from readers of my websiite. Several people bought this book and also the mini version through my links to Amazon... although I did not have even this book in my recommended book list!

I thought that there must be something about this book so I ordered it also. I was very pleased when I received it since my daughter loves it!
The dictionary has a good amount of Polish-English vocabulary divided into thematic sections. It has also a graphic which is pleasing to the eye, especially for the children since they neeed nice graphic to understand the text! This book has a larger selection of words than the mini-book version, so it would teach children a richer vocabulary. But the mini-book can be easier to start. So, I recommend the whole series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, just not for ages 9 -12
We have this book in both of our native languages (Polish and Arabic). So, we decided to use the two versions together. Dad sits on one side, and I sit on the other side. Our daughter would point out to a picture and he says the Polish word, then I say the Arabic word. With time, this book helped our daughter associate the picture to the word in both languages; associate each language to each parent and later she would read it with either one of us and fill in the words in the language of the missing parent. It was awesome! ... Read more

Product Description
Polish is the state language of the Polish Republic. It is a member of the western sub-group of the Slavonic languages, a family which includes Bulgarian, Russian, Ukranian and other languages. As well as nearly 40 million speakers in Poland itself, Polish is spoken by an estimated 10 million Poles abroad. This book is intended to help you progress quickly from the basics to understanding, speaking and writing Polish. Twenty thematic units increase in complexity, as they move from dealing with everyday situations to talking about the past and making plans. The emphasis is on communication throughout, with important language structures introduced through dialogues in each unit. These build up to give you a command of the essential phrases necessary for a trip to Poland. Exercises are included so that you can practice the language as it is introduced, and tips throughout should help with the grammar. Aspects of life in Poland are also detailed to give a context to the language. ... Read more

Product Description
Since July 2004 the author has been writing about Polish language, literature, and folklore for the Boston-based biweekly Bialy Orzel/White Eagle. Inspired by the calendar, by items in the Polish press, by his experience learning and teaching the Polish language, by new acquisitions for his home library, by questions from readers and by serendipity, he has explored, among other things, the origins of words and expressions, the grammatical peculiarities of the language and the reflections of everyday (and not so everyday) life in Polish proverbs and folksongs and in the works of great Polish writers.
The present edited collection of seventy of his columns deals with topics ranging from why there is no country called Italia on Polish maps to why a word to the wise is not always sufficient; from names for the devil to what Polish turkeys have to do with India; from the language of flowers to the signs of the zodiac; from urban folksongs to why Polish is so difficult. You don't have to be Polish--or even know Polish--to enjoy the essays collected here. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm still looking for a good phrasebook...
Two big complaints:
(1) The author invented his own method of phonetic annotation. The non-standard phonetics are not well-done, and create undue complexity when sussing out the pronunciations.I find myself referring back to the somewhat-helpful pronunciation guide often - even for words I know how to pronounce, because the phonetic notation has me second-guessing myself. Also, the vowel pronunciation cues are unhelpful for some American regional dialects (e.g. if "pen" and "pin" sound the same).Using IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) would have been a better choice, because those sounds are well-established standards.

(2) The book is visually cluttered and disorganized. The text is crushed between huge top & bottom margins. The phrases, translations and phonetics often break into the next column or page. It lacks guide headings to ease navigation, and the two-column newspaper layout adds to the textual chaos.

I'm sure the book is a valuable study guide, but it is ill-suited for quick reference.I use phrasebooks for reminders and to keep me focused (I tend to creolize similar languages, if I stop paying attention or start speaking too quickly). For me, phrasebooks are a crutch in on-the-go situations, but this book gives me little to lean on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent dictionary of slang for translators of any level of conversation.
I thought this was an excellent dictionary, useful for translating modern Polish colloquialisms and the language of the street. A great and useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words you'll hear in a Polish movie but not in a classroom.
There is no way to really get to know a culture without knowledge of its idioms and colloquialisms. This book fills a void in colloquial Polish material available for English speakers and is better than many similar slang dictionaries that can be found for the more widely spoken languages. It has phonetics to help with pronunciation, an English index to make the dictionary bi-directional, sample sentences in Polish and English, and two levels of warning for vulgar expressions. Usually only the masculine form of the noun or adjective is given but this is not a detraction except for beginning Polish learners (even so a beginner would be comfortable with this dictionary). The origins of some of the expressions are not obvious for those unfamiliar with Polish culture and some explanation would have been helpful. Also at times too many seldom used English synonyms are provided for a given Polish expression. This might confuse a Polish reader trying to learn English slang. Nonetheless the dictionary is very worthwhile. The book is about 400 pages with over 5,000 entries. Widawski provides us with a true lexical treasure of street talk which had not been systematized this way before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Young Polish Adults (and others)
Learn all the phrases your parents will never teach you!Great for people who want to learn all the "off the street" phrases in Poland. Do not look for words such as "potato," "grandma," or "grandpa."This dictionary contains exactly what the title says- slang."You'll laugh until you stop."

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a Book of Polish Phrases to be shared with Grandchildren
We were expecting "common Polish phrases" which we learned inour Polish homes and parochial school environments; instead upon perusingthe book, we came across "four letter" word combinations not tobe shared with the family......Was just looking for the Polish words for"grandfather, father, mother, potatoes"....etc.......Was verydisappointed...... ... Product Description
This book is the most complete phonology of contemporary Polish ever published. It is topic-oriented and presents the fundamental characteristics and problems associated with each topic, among them syllable structure, vowel-zero alternations, palatalizations, and other vowel and consonant changes. Professor Gussmann re-examines assumptions about phonological contrasts and alternations, and raises and addresses central questions in morphophonology. He takes morphophonology to be systematically separate from phonology. Palatalizations, he shows, are crucial to Polish, as both phonological and morphophonological phenomena: their detailed description leads him to a systematic presentation of vocalic alternations.

The book develops a Government Phonology account of Polish, but is primarily a description of the language with the model subordinated to the organization of data. All the many examples used to illustrate the presentation are transcribed in standard IPA, and translated. This important book will interest all scholars and advanced students of Polish and Slavic phonology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for short trips in Warsaw
This product was so much fun to use and learn from!! I would definitely buy another from them. I was able to say basic things after using this CDROM. If my trip involved going it alone to smaller Polish towns I would have been very lonely but could have survived. Luckily my trip was only 4 days total in Warsaw and didn't have much need for Polish. But I earned MAJOR brownie points with cashiers, wait staff and seminar attendees for the fundamental Polish that learned from this one introductory CDROM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Polish
You won't become a fluent speaker of Polish by using this CD ROM, but you will receive a terrific introduction to the language. The format is easy to follow, you can skip around as you see fit, and it's actually fun to use. I bought this several months before my trip to Poland, and I definitely had a much easier time knowing what I learned from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice software
I just received the CD-ROM and made a general tour. Indeed that's nice software with nice features. I just expected to have a little more lessons, as there are 9 sets of words to learn, each corresponds to a lesson. And there is also a memory game with all words learned.

For sure you won't be able to understand more than a few words and basic phrases but that's a very good starting point.
One think is you got to listen Polish in order to learn the pronunciation. At least for a complete beginner as me, you've got use a CD, just a book won't help a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun w/ Polish
This is a very fun product, thats also very effective. This product features two actual native polish speakers one male one female. You learn by seeing pictures of the word your learning accompanied by how you'd say it in polish. The course is divided into different sub-categories of study, "Food, Numbers, Body Parts, Phrases, Etc.." and within each of these areas of study you begin buy learning the word by associating it to its picture. Once you learned the words you can play easy & hard games designed to test your memory. There's also afeature that allows you to hook up a mic and test your pronunciation, which i guess is then compared against the correct pronunciation. I haven't tried using this feature yet. Overall this is a good BEGINNERS product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Polish through Play & Games - excellent Software!
My daughter really loves this CD and she is only 6 years old! She intuitively knows how to switch to another topic (since every topic and every option has its own unique symbol). I agree with other customers that this is probably the best one CD that EuroTalks offers for people who wants to learn Polish.
This CD has a great selection of topics: food, colors, first words, body, countries and more... it teaches a good pronunciations and also how to write the words.
Her favorite is "Body" since it offers a Zombi game - after guessingproperly all the body parts - the terrified Zombi is awaken.
I really recommend it to all - adults and kids! ... Read more
